2. Existing Product
They have included
singer/songwriter Harry
Styles on the front of the
magazine. This will help
entice a wider audience
as I know many people
who are fans will buy this
issue for Harry styles
being on the front.
One thing I did notice in
this issue the main image
is taken in a location
when usually vogue have
more studio photoshoots
By putting the celebrities name in bold and in direct sight, this
helps even people who isnât familiar with the celebrity on the
front know who they are reading about. Potentially even if they
donât know the person they will read it to get to know the person
and build up not only the magazine, but the celebrities fanbase.
There is very limited
cover lines on the front
cover of this magazine.
To me this indicates that
the image is the main
focus. The fact that this
is main focus infers that
maybe the message
behind the magazine
front cover is in the
main image
3. The main coverline on this
front cover states
âANYTIME YOUâRE
PUTTING BARRIERS UP IN
YOUR LIFE, YOUâRE
LIMITING YOURSELFâ. This
refers to fashion, what this
coverline is saying is do
not let fashion define you.
In the main image
we can see Harry
Styles showcasing a
dress and blazer,
supporting gender
fluid fashion and
breaking
stereotypes.
This magazine cover has a
simple but effective
colour scheme that ties in
well with the front cover.
4. Existing Product This photo was taken in a studio, this is a
reacurring similarity I have seen when
researching for my magazine. So I will take
this on board and make sure I do a do a
studio photoshoot.
Another similarity
I have seen
amongst the
double page
spreads I have
seen is the fact
that normally on a
double page
spread one page
is dedicated
entirely to one
image.
In the image we can see a woman wearing a full black outfit,
including an eccentric hat and gloves. This image is very striking and
grabs the audiences attention. This suggests that you donât have to
wear a lot of colour to be bold and stand out.
The âsudden impactâ
text is enlarged and
in bold, this also
helps entice the
audience to read the
article as they want
to know what the
âsudden impactâ is
and why it is the main
focus on the page
This double page
spread has a very
simple but
effective colour
scheme, this
makes it both,
easy on the eye
and easy to read
5. Existing Product This contents page has
a very simple colour
scheme of black and
white. I think this is
very important for a
contents page as it is
essentially the place in
the magazine with all
the information of
whats in it and where it
is located, and it is
important that this
section is clear and you
are abele to understand
it in order to use the
information.
In the centre of the
page we can see a
man who is potentially
a celebrity. With this
being the main focus
this will potentially
entice people if they
are interested in the
person and wants to
find out why they are
in the magazine or it
will make people
wonder who it is and
they will read on.
Obviously the whole point of
the contents page is to inform
you what page everything is on
and the numbers are very clear
and bold on this contents page
which I think is a very important
feature.
6. Existing Product This magazine is a lot
different to the vogue
front covers as this has
a lot more going on
and is a lot more
âclutteredâ.
The image on the
front cover is taken
in a studio. I have
noticed from my
research that the
majority of
magazine front
cover images are
shot in a studio.
The direct
address of the
coverline âill get
you in shapeâ
makes the
audience feel
involved and
included with the
magazine.
7. Research Analysis
I have learnt from my research that not all magazines go for the same look for
example when doing my research I have realized that for example vogue goes
for a very minimal, simplistic look whereas the health and fitness magazine is
brighter and more cluttered. I have also learnt that just because the magazine is
brighter and bolder it doesnât necessarily mean that you will be attracted to it
more, i have learnt that more people are attracted to magazines such as vogue
because it is less overwhelming and it is easier to read.
From my research I have also learnt that the majority of front cover images are
taken in a studio or if they are taken in a location there isnât much going on in
the background as they want the main focus to be on the main image itself.
When researching double page spreads I seen realized that almost every double
page spread has one page entirely dedicated to an image or an advert. Pull
quotes are also a key feauture in double page spreads I have found out
From this I now know what I have to include in my magazine not only for it to
look professional but for it to entice a wide audience.
9. Audience research
From my survey I have found out that most of the respondents are between 16-20 which
makes my survey more reliable as my target audience is for people between 16-20 so this
will give me a real indication of what to include in my project.
This tells me that my audience is a young audience and when making my magazine I will
need to consider what I include to make sure that it appeals to my chosen target audience.
My magazine will appeal to this audience because when writing my proposal I decided that
my target audience would be 16-20 year olds therefore I can use these responses and
factor them in when making my magazine.
10. Audience research
From this I can see that the majority of my responses said that the main image entices
them therefore I need to make sure the main image on my front cover is striking and the
main focus of the front cover. However a few people did say that the colour scheme and
coverlines were important too so I will also factor this in my work too. No one chose
masthead however I believe this is because when people buy a magazine they already
know what magazine they are going to buy so they are more interested in what is on the
front cover rather than the masthead. Even though no one chose masthead I still feel when
making my magazine I will still make sure that my masthead is bold and will still entice even
people who do not normally buy the magazine to gain a wider audience.
11. Audience research
The majority of people said they would read a magazine based on the gender fluid
fashion movement. From this I know that a lot of people will be interested in the
magazine I am going to be creating. This makes me more motivated to create a
magazine based on the gender fluid fashion movement because I know people will
read it and accept it more. Hopefully by creating this magazine I will show that
fashion doesnât have a gender and it will make everyone accept and apreciate it.
12. When planning I had a good idea of what I needed to included in my magazine I
knew if I wanted to do a gender fluid magazine I needed to break the
stereotypes on fashion and have males dressed in more feminine clothes and
vice versa. Before doing my survey I didnât even think of doing a picture with
both genders wearing exactly the same. I thought this would be a good idea so I
have decided to add this into my project. Also I think by people knowing what
to expect in a gender fluid fashion magazine it means that I need to provide this
and make sure its correct.
13. From this I have found out that no one really ever buys magazines anymore and I
think this is because nowadays people find everthing out online. Therefore when
creating my magazine I could potentially consider making an online issue aswell.
With people not really buying magazines anymore it motivates me more to create
a magazine that will change peoples opinions on magazines and create a
magazine people will actually want to buy.
14. From seeing that the majority of people would prefer to buy a physical copy this
means that I will do a magazine in psychical copy as it will reach to a wider
audience. However some people did say they would prefer to read a digital copy
so I could potentially consider doing this in the future to cater for everyone.
15. The majority of people said that they would spend between ÂŁ2-ÂŁ4 on a
magazine this means that I will price my magazine at about the ÂŁ3 as then I
know it is not overpriced and people will actauly buy it.
16. Out of my 15 responses to this question the most common answers were
about the image and the masthead. Therefore when creating my magazine I
will focus on making these aspects the main focus in order to entice people. I
will make sure that my masthead is very bold and in a font that is easily
readable so people can see it from far away. I will also make sure my image is
of a good high quality and is very simplistic with nothing much going on so that
you can easily see the model.
17. The majority of the responses to this question were once again about the model
and the main image now I know that this is a very important feature to entic
people in I will make sure I choose models that fit the aesthetic of the magazine
to achieve the best possible look. I will also make sure my models facial
expressions are bold so that it draws you into the cover.
18. When taking images for my magazine I need to plan outfits very thouroughly,
with doing a gender fluid fashion magazine people have an expectation of what
they expect to see the models wearing so i have to make sure I live up to this
expectation. The main message of my magazine is to normalize androgynous
fashion and broaden peoples thoughs on it. With the majority of people saying
fashion they see in magazines influences what they wear potentially this might
encourage people to try out androgynous fashion themselves
20. Interview 1
What brands would you consider to be androgynous?
Some brands that immediately stand out to me as being androgynous are brands such
as; collusion on asos, weekday,& other stories and boden. I would class these as
androgynous fashion brands as they are very gender fluid and include pieces such as;
baggy jeans,dungarees,flowy shirts etc.
What would you expect to read about in an article in a gender fluid fashion
magazine?
I would expect to read about potentially the history and how the term androgynous
and androgynous fashion came about. Potentially I would expect to also see
interviews with people who are androgynous and have potentially faced issues and
tips on how to overcome these problems
What are your thoughts on androgynous fashion?
My thoughts on androgynous fashion are all positive I believe that if you are happy
and comfortable in what you wear then it doesnât matter what anyone else thinks. I
also believe that we need to shine a light on andrognous fashion and normalise it.
Would you read a gender fluid fashion magazine?
I would 100% read a gender fluid fashion as like I said I think we need to make people
more aware of some of the problems that people face for just being themselves.
21. Interview 1
From doing this interview I have found out what people expect to see in a gender fluid
fashion magazine and therefore I know what I have to include. I also know what things to
think about when choosing what clothes I want my models to wear as now I know what
brands people consider to be androgynous so I can consider this when purchasing the
clothes. Also by the brands that the interviewee considered androgynous fashion are all
highstreet brands popular with younger people therefore that tells me that my target
audience will be primarily the younger generation. To make my product appeal to the
younger generation I will use young models and include in trend brands and fashion.
