PROFINET is widely accepted and well proven in plant engineering.
This is because a lot of PROFINET functions were defined in close collaboration with customers and are used now in many applications. But also in the mechanical engineering the modular and adaptable architecture of PROFINET together with its comprehensive function set allows innovative and cost-saving machine automation.
The advantages of PROFINET pay off in all phases of a machine’s cycle – from the planning of initial start-up and operation up through to service and maintenance. PROFINET offers automatic adaptable address assignment on account of the topology for standard machines, rapid initial start-up with easy tools and defined interfaces for addressing, interoperability of devices thanks to certification, excellent diagnosis of the devices and the network as well as high performance and precision.
PROFINET offers built-in TCP/IP communication, which is independent from special HW- or SW- modules in the devices or controllers. So communication between the overlaid production line control and the devices is easily possible; or an adaptation of the machine by a new parameterization or controlling by vision systems.
The proven PROFIsafe profile is another brick in the modular PROFINET setup which allows the machine builder & OEMs innovative solutions to raise flexibility and reduce Time-to-Market.
This document provides an overview of PROFINET, which applies Ethernet standards to industrial automation. It reviews PROFIBUS and how PROFINET evolved as the natural progression. It describes key PROFINET concepts like real-time communication capabilities and integration with existing fieldbus systems. Configuration and network monitoring considerations are also discussed.

Benefit Analysis (Qualitative)
System investment: Because the Ff system uses relatively less modules which can save
cabinets, control room space. So the investment is near with conventional DCS system .
Instruments and installation costs: Ff transmitters and valve positioners costs are 10% to
30% higher compared with conventional / HART transmitters , but since there are huge
saving in the Ff bus system installation materials ( cables, bridge, etc.) ,man-hours, the total
cost does not increase, even can decrease, especially in large projects.
Commissioning costs: As a result of the intelligent bus technology, it’s easy to
commission, shorten the commission duration greatly, reduce the labor costs of the
investment, and finally save more than 50% of the investment.
Maintenance costs: As a result of the AMS and embedded diagnostic function in Ff field
instrumentation, we can save 50 to 70% of maintenance time and costs.
