As most of our students now are digital natives who prefer YouTube to Hugo, Facebook to Fitzgerald , and Twitter to Twain, it’s difficult to have them attend to texts longer than status updates. The speakers will discuss ways of inviting students to become lifelong learners by making reading relevant.
The speakers discussed the groundwork for a reading curriculum revision project in an English Department of a Japanese university by presenting the results of their investigation of current teaching practices, along with an exploration of all aspects of their students' reading: both in the L1 and L2, online and off, mobile and static, for pleasure and required, current and projected. The project began with a thorough needs analysis (Brown, 1995; Richards and Rogers, 2001) that involved focus groups, classroom observation, and the administration of online surveys to students, reading teachers, and upper division content course instructors. Particular attention was focused on how reading instruction could be made relevant to digital natives and how the practice of reading could be made into a habit and carried beyond the temporal and physical confines of school life.

This PPT accompanied a presentation given by Joseph Dias and Gregory Strong at the JALT PAN-SIG Conference in Matsumoto Japan on May 21, 2011 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
As most of our students now are digital natives who prefer YouTube to Hugo, Facebook to Fitzgerald , and Twitter to Twain, it’s difficult to have them attend to texts longer than status updates. The speakers will discuss ways of inviting students to become lifelong learners by making reading relevant.
The speakers discussed the groundwork for a reading curriculum revision project in an English Department of a Japanese university by presenting the results of their investigation of current teaching practices, along with an exploration of all aspects of their students' reading: both in the L1 and L2, online and off, mobile and static, for pleasure and required, current and projected. The project began with a thorough needs analysis (Brown, 1995; Richards and Rogers, 2001) that involved focus groups, classroom observation, and the administration of online surveys to students, reading teachers, and upper division content course instructors. Particular attention was focused on how reading instruction could be made relevant to digital natives and how the practice of reading could be made into a habit and carried beyond the temporal and physical confines of school life.

In biology, transcription is the first step in the process of gene expression, in which the information stored in DNA is copied into a complementary RNA molecule. The process of transcription occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and in the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells.
The transcription process starts when the enzyme RNA polymerase recognizes a specific DNA sequence, called a promoter, which indicates the starting point of transcription. RNA polymerase then unwinds the double helix of the DNA molecule and uses one strand as a template to synthesize a complementary RNA molecule.
During transcription, RNA polymerase adds nucleotides, the building blocks of RNA, to the 3' end of the RNA molecule, following the base-pairing rules of A-U and C-G. The newly synthesized RNA molecule is called a primary transcript, which may undergo further processing, including splicing and capping, to form a mature RNA molecule.
In eukaryotes, the mature RNA molecule is usually transported out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm, where it can be translated into a protein. In prokaryotes, the RNA molecule can be translated immediately into a protein without leaving the cytoplasm.
Transcription is a complex process that is regulated by various factors, including DNA-binding proteins and small regulatory RNA molecules, to ensure that the correct genes are expressed at the appropriate times and in the appropriate cells.

- 1. Diego Diani What is the purpose of translation and transcription? Genes are the instructions for proteins or messages that the cell needs to take in order to carry it out. In transcription, the gene is converted into a mRNA messenger which is posted to the ribosomes. The ribosomes then translate the message into polypeptide. What is translation? Translation is the second half of protein synthesis. This process is called translation because you’re taking a sequence from RNA and you turning it into a sequence of amino acids. (It’s basically the process of going from nucleic acids sequence to protein sequence). How does it work? The process of translation is primarily done by ribosomes, which requires the mRNA, which is the guide for ribosomes, as well as other helper molecules such as tRNA and others. Steps of translation: Initiation- When you bring together the two halves of a ribosome, the large and the small sub-unit. You bring together mRNA and tRNA with that small sub-unit. (AUG= start condon) Elongation- Is the addition of new amino acids into the protein. Termination- Is where you end the process. (UAA,UAG,UGA= stop codons) What is transcription? Is the first step of the process known as protein synthesis Transcription is how you copy a DNA gene into a form of mRNA so the ribosome can build and guide protein synthesis without damaging the nucleus in the cell
- 2. Diego Diani How does it work? The process of transcription begins with the concept known as codons, where DNA is written in bases as A, C, and G’s. But since amino acids are written in a different form and you can’t write a single base to represent each, you write them in a group of 3 bases. Promoter- Is the indicator who allows the genes to know where the process begins Steps: First step is when the DNA helix is opened Then the RNA polymerase builds RNA to connect start the base paring role Ex. A G T C C A A T C G UCAGGUUAGC To conclude the steps the cells goes through some editing Intros get edited out because it is not used during the process therefore it’s removed, except for Exons which are used.
