Hansen's disease, also known as leprosy, is a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, nerves, eyes, and mucous membranes. It is transmitted through droplets from the nose and mouth during close, repeated contact with untreated cases. Symptoms vary depending on the classification of the disease, which ranges from tuberculoid leprosy with few lesions to lepromatous leprosy with many skin nodules and widespread nerve damage. Diagnosis involves examination of skin and nerve lesions as well as identification of acid-fast bacilli in smears of lesions.
