WHY: IDEOLOGY
“Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed, citizens can change
the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that
ever has.”
― Margaret Mead
What we’re about:
We are not about the poor – But about the energetic.
We’re not about the previously disadvantaged – We are about the empowered.
We’re not about helping people – We’re about serving those with amazing
potential.
We’re not about iterative progression – We’re about leapfrogging and
challenging norms.
We’re not about fixing the school system – But co-creating revolutions within it.
Our Message to Youth
We Believe in You
We See an Amazing and Empowering
Future for You
We’re Here for You
Our Philosophy
Break rules – Expect more
Think differently
Youth are the Now - Provide the tools and
let them explode.
Elements contributing towards scale:
1. Secondary Learners – Excess energy & time
2. Unemployed Youth – Want to learn & teach
3. Volunteers & IT Students – Mentor
4. Corporates & Business – Funding & Partnership
5. Celebrities – Awareness Pillar
6. Schools & Teachers – Encouraging ICTs
7. Underutilized PC Labs in Schools
Coding communities
in Secondary Schools
And where we leverage latent potential:
Since 2009: 7,000 Trained, 15 IT Training Centers, 5 provinces.

Why Coding in Schools?
Globally, over 400 Million
people tried coding using
the “Hour of Code”
Campaign.
RAISING AWARENESS:GAMIFIED LEARNING:
Minecraft example.
Coding is taught to kids using games
Widespread Coding in Schools
US & developed countries primary uptake of coding for kids was organized by
teachers, not independent traction.
Teachers struggle with basic subjects. How can they use tech and address
computer literacy for students, much less coding?
Online apps, resources and innovations promise to transform education – None of
them can guarantee impact.
Schools:
Tech in Schools:
In 2013 Angie Motshekga tells parliament that the “test of the NPD said 80% of
the schools were dysfunctional”.
In a 2015 report the WEF ranked SA last in the quality of mathematics and science
and at 139 out of 143 in the overall quality.
[ Looks Impossible ]
Note: It actually gets so much worse… Implementation is challenging due to even functional labs not
having connectivity, IT and CAT enrolled students are in decline and more juicy tidbits coming soon.
Coding Awareness campaigns run by Code for Change since 2014.

How students connect with careers?
CodeJIKA is a non-accredited, hands-on, after-school coding learning movement providing immediate, medium- and long-term
solutions to ICT Education in secondary schools as well as a pipeline for scarce ICT skills to industry.
This is accomplished through information and vision casting embedded in the program, opportunities listing on the platform and
identifying key skill and leaders through referrals, awards, challenges, competitions and hands-on engagements.
• Encourage learners to
take CAT & IT
• Teach them to code.
1. Skills
• Provide vision ideas and dreams about
where ICT and Coding skills can take a
career.
• Examples of careers and companies, what
they do and how they operate.
• Work with; Scholarship programs, Training
programs, universities and colleges to host a
basic, useful listing of relevant ICT related
career opportunities.
2. Vision
3. Linkages & Info
• Collaborate in applying for and referring
gifted learners into further development
studies and/or opportunities from other
players in civil society, academia or the
private sector.
4. Up-stream Partnerships
Sustainability – The long tail:
Sustainability is based on a trifecta of strong engagement elements which are
fundamental to the program structures.
Student-level
Curriculum & Policy Level:
Code for Change engages with National DBE; seeks to be a part of the consortium needed to
transform the ICT in education predicament and provides; hands-on feedback, statistics, input
and encouragement in the creation and improvement of curriculum and ICT Edu policy.
School-level District-level
The primary goal of the
program is an energetic eco-
system of student-run coding
clubs which compete, innovate,
inspire and teach others. This
encourages growth past
hands-on engagement.
Providing an improved
appreciation of ICT
careers and technology
applications has proven
both improved sign-up
and pass rates for CAT
learners.
Working with district
and school
management to
encourage schools to
apply and successfully
offer the CAT & IT
electives.

  • 3. WHAT IS CODEJIKA? A media campaign to bring coding into every secondary school. A. An online platform to learn coding online for FREE B. Eco-system of student-run coding clubs built in- school Launch: 25 April 2018 TBC* Pilot: 2017 Q4: 25 High Schools & 1,500 Students Beta version: www.codejika.com Campaign Drivers: • Ad & videos including celebrity ambassadors. • Events, awards and coding competitions. Code for Change is a NPO which has trained over 8000 youth in 15 in-house IT Training Centers in 5 provinces since 2009 and has been on the forefront of coding in SA schools since 2014. 3
  • 4. 2020 Big Hairy Scary Goals 500 Coding clubs Engage with 1,000 Schools 200 Volunteers 100 Coding Events 1,000 Youth per month complete a challenge 100,000 Sign ups on the Website 1,000,000 People Try Coding
  • 6. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ― Margaret Mead
  • 7. What we’re about: We are not about the poor – But about the energetic. We’re not about the previously disadvantaged – We are about the empowered. We’re not about helping people – We’re about serving those with amazing potential. We’re not about iterative progression – We’re about leapfrogging and challenging norms. We’re not about fixing the school system – But co-creating revolutions within it.
  • 8. Our Message to Youth We Believe in You We See an Amazing and Empowering Future for You We’re Here for You Our Philosophy Break rules – Expect more Think differently Youth are the Now - Provide the tools and let them explode.
  • 9. Elements contributing towards scale: 1. Secondary Learners – Excess energy & time 2. Unemployed Youth – Want to learn & teach 3. Volunteers & IT Students – Mentor 4. Corporates & Business – Funding & Partnership 5. Celebrities – Awareness Pillar 6. Schools & Teachers – Encouraging ICTs 7. Underutilized PC Labs in Schools Coding communities in Secondary Schools And where we leverage latent potential:
  • 10. Since 2009: 7,000 Trained, 15 IT Training Centers, 5 provinces.
  • 11. WHAT: CODING IN SCHOOLS
  • 12. NORMALLY LOOKS FOR THE COMPUTER TO FOLLOW. WHICH INVOLVES TYPING IN STEP-BY- STEP COMMANDS CODING, IS TELLING A COMPUTER WHAT YOU WANT IT TO DO, (LIKE PYTHON, C, C++, JAVASCRIPT, RUBY AND PHP, AMONG OTHERS) bloom.bg/1GzwRDU 1. 2. 3. COMPUTERS CAN UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT LANGUAGES TOO,.. https://youtu.be/cKhVupvyhKk https://dailytekk.com/what-is-coding-15-facts-for-beginners/ ALMOST ANYTHING USES CODE. POWERED BY ELECTRICITY like this: print 'Hello, world!' What is Coding?
  • 13. EVERY INDUSTRY & ESSENTIAL SKILL BEST TAUGHT YOUNG. A LANGUAGE, Re-skilling 90,000 Employees with IT Skills A Technology Company Using Raspberry Pi simply coded to monitor oven temperature, timing & batch management for ISO compliance. PRAVIN GORDHAN – NOV 2016 CNBC/JSE “WE NEED TO FUTURE-SAFE OUR WORKFORCE.” NEEDS CODE BANKING: AUTOMOTIVE: HAND-MADE RUSKS: 1. 2. 3. NATIONAL INCREASING COMPETITIVENESS Why Coding in Schools?
  • 14. Globally, over 400 Million people tried coding using the “Hour of Code” Campaign. RAISING AWARENESS:GAMIFIED LEARNING: Minecraft example. Coding is taught to kids using games
  • 15. Widespread Coding in Schools US & developed countries primary uptake of coding for kids was organized by teachers, not independent traction. Teachers struggle with basic subjects. How can they use tech and address computer literacy for students, much less coding? Online apps, resources and innovations promise to transform education – None of them can guarantee impact. Schools: Tech in Schools: In 2013 Angie Motshekga tells parliament that the “test of the NPD said 80% of the schools were dysfunctional”. In a 2015 report the WEF ranked SA last in the quality of mathematics and science and at 139 out of 143 in the overall quality. [ Looks Impossible ] Note: It actually gets so much worse… Implementation is challenging due to even functional labs not having connectivity, IT and CAT enrolled students are in decline and more juicy tidbits coming soon.
