This document summarizes a study utilizing Landsat data to detect ephemeral water sources in support of management of equids (wild horses and burros) in the Sinbad Herd Management Area in Utah. The study tested the feasibility of using high resolution Landsat 8 and Sentinel-1 data to map seasonal surface water at small scales. A random forest classifier achieved higher accuracy when applied to a 15m pan-sharpened Landsat model compared to the original 30m resolution. The high resolution water maps produced can help inform habitat selection models and management of equids in semi-arid environments.
