The Role of Assessment in High
Performing Schools
1) Read the Characteristics
2) Write down 3 thoughts (each on a separate piece of paper) you
have about the role of assessment through the lens of High
Performing Schools, Crumple each paper into a ball.
3) When you hear Dr. Malone yell SNOWBALL FIGHT you may
begin to pummel your classmates with your snow balls and return
fire with those they throw at you until you hear CEASEFIRE.
4) Pick up all the snowballs near you until the floor is clean and
group in triads for discussion.
5) In your triad discuss each statement in your group and select 3
statements that resonate with your group to share with the whole
class.

A Clear and Shared Focus ~Everybody knows where they are
going and why. The focus is on achieving a shared vision, and all
understand their role in achieving the vision. The focus and vision
are developed from common beliefs and values, creating a
consistent direction for all involved. ~ 9 Characteristics of High Performing

Assignment: Interview a current school principal for the purpose of gaining their thoughts
and discussing the processes and priorities they use to create a School Improvement Plan
as required by state law. Prepare to present your findings on 9/17.
Possible Interview Questions:
Where did you start?
What questions did you ask?
Who did you consult?
Did you have any issues with teacher buy-in/ownership? What did you do?
What were your first priorities?
What types of data were your first priority?
Where did you look first and who did you first contact?
Who was/were your mentor(s) and what was the best advice he/she gave you?
How do you measure progress?
What indicators do you use to know if your CSIP plan is working?
What system did you put in place to monitor progress toward your goals?
How do you build on previous work?
Did you follow a template for your CSIP plan?
How are your building goals connected to the plan?May I have a copy?
How is the building vision and/or mission connected to the plan? May I have a copy?

Pyramid
• Read the definitions and types of data including
examples on Handout H5.2
• Construct a pyramid on the chart paper that represents
the relative time and attention currently given to each of
the 5 types of data in your school (Weekly, quarterly,
annually, never)
• Write the name of each of the 5 types of data in the most
appropriate layer with the widest part of the pyramid
representing where you spend the greatest amount of
time…the top the least.
• Read Handout H5.3 silently
SiP Process Puzzle
• Organize the 8 Stage title cards to display the SIP
process in a circle
• Overlay the 8 description cards on each appropriate
Stage.
• Examine Stage process planning calendar

  • 3. TSC Sharing Groups of 4 • What common understandings does your group have regarding the reading? • Can you cite examples from your current settings that match/expand the reading? • Any common concerns or follow-up questions does your group have about the reading?
  • 4. The Role of Assessment in High Performing Schools 1) Read the Characteristics 2) Write down 3 thoughts (each on a separate piece of paper) you have about the role of assessment through the lens of High Performing Schools, Crumple each paper into a ball. 3) When you hear Dr. Malone yell SNOWBALL FIGHT you may begin to pummel your classmates with your snow balls and return fire with those they throw at you until you hear CEASEFIRE. 4) Pick up all the snowballs near you until the floor is clean and group in triads for discussion. 5) In your triad discuss each statement in your group and select 3 statements that resonate with your group to share with the whole class.   • 5. Mission Vision Sharing 7 Triads (5-7 minutes each) • Mission Vision Continuums A Clear and Shared Focus ~Everybody knows where they are going and why. The focus is on achieving a shared vision, and all understand their role in achieving the vision. The focus and vision are developed from common beliefs and values, creating a consistent direction for all involved. ~ 9 Characteristics of High Performing Schools • Vision….Where are we going? • Mission…Why do we exist? • Mission Video • Use Figure 3.3 on p.48 to evaluate each mission • What do you notice about your school’s Mission and/or Vision statements?

CSIP Principal Interview Assignment: Interview a current school principal for the purpose of gaining their thoughts and discussing the processes and priorities they use to create a School Improvement Plan as required by state law. Prepare to present your findings on 9/17. Possible Interview Questions: Where did you start? What questions did you ask? Who did you consult? Did you have any issues with teacher buy-in/ownership? What did you do? What were your first priorities? What types of data were your first priority? Where did you look first and who did you first contact? Who was/were your mentor(s) and what was the best advice he/she gave you? How do you measure progress? What indicators do you use to know if your CSIP plan is working? What system did you put in place to monitor progress toward your goals? How do you build on previous work? Did you follow a template for your CSIP plan? How are your building goals connected to the plan?May I have a copy? How is the building vision and/or mission connected to the plan? May I have a copy?

Constructing a Data Pyramid • Read the definitions and types of data including examples on Handout H5.2 • Construct a pyramid on the chart paper that represents the relative time and attention currently given to each of the 5 types of data in your school (Weekly, quarterly, annually, never) • Write the name of each of the 5 types of data in the most appropriate layer with the widest part of the pyramid representing where you spend the greatest amount of time…the top the least. • Read Handout H5.3 silently
