This document evaluates the use of reanalysis datasets for long-term solar resource assessment as an alternative to satellite datasets that only go back 15 years. It finds that while second-generation reanalysis datasets have improved resolution compared to first-generation, they still do not resolve clouds as well as needed. Bias correcting the datasets reduced errors but not enough to recommend them over established satellite methods. More development is needed before reanalysis datasets can reliably extend energy estimates beyond satellite coverage.
