This document summarizes the four realms of racism and change: personal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural. It provides examples for each realm. The personal realm involves individual values, beliefs, and feelings that can express as prejudice, stereotyping, or superiority. Interpersonal racism involves acting on those fears and stereotypes through discrimination or violence. Institutional racism is built into policies, procedures, and practices that can intentionally or unintentionally discriminate. Cultural racism influences what is considered normal or valued in a society in terms of behavior, expression, and thought.
