Instead of reducing the number of tests in a CI cycle to reduce test time, Tanay Nagjee will discuss how entire test suites can be broken down and parallelized, reducing the time to run them by 80% or more. By leveraging a cluster of computing horsepower (either on-premise physical machines or in the cloud), large test suites can execute in a fraction of the time it takes by smartly parallelizing their individual tests. Overall shift team effectiveness is critical, but especially shift handover activities. Shift teams are at the point of manufacture and hold the keys to plant and equipment safety, reliability, production and product quality, as well as operational discipline. Shift handovers take just 5% of operational time, but account for around 40% of plant incidents. So if you want your digital transformation (DX) initiatives to succeed, you need to think like an operator–to empathize and gain credibility with those on the shop floor–and to translate the DX agenda into their language. Only through this can a true changing of ways occur. This session will showcase a proven shift team effectiveness model comprising four key areas and sub-components–organizational capability, work environment, information and technology, and operating practices–and how they all need to work in tandem with each other. Shift handovers take just 5% of operational time, but account for around 40% of plant incidents. So if you want your digital transformation (DX) initiatives to succeed, you need to think like an operator–to empathize and gain credibility with those on the shop floor–and to translate the DX agenda into their language. Only through this can a true changing of ways occur. "Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

Laura Adkins-Hackett, Economist, LMIC, and Sukriti Trehan, Data Scientist, LMIC, presented their research exploring trends in the skills listed in OJPs to develop a deeper understanding of in-demand skills. Editor's Notes
- The Charity Action for Children started life as The Children’s Home in 1869, founded by the Revd Stephenson, a methodist minister.We have been through many iterations of Branding and name, becoming Action for Children in 2008. We have about 430 sites across the UK, with about 4000 FTE employees and a turnover of £180m.
- In 2006, overall systems availability for the year was below 95%. All computing was concentrated on the Highbury site in a converted kitchen, with a flaky power supply, no fall back capability, and a DR recovery time measured in months. Users were not very happy.
- We did not wake up and think ‘let’s move the datacentre’ – it was part of an overall programme of improvement and expansion of the use of Information Systems within Action for Children. A 3 year programme was defined, one stream of which was the IS Infrastructure programme, aimed at achieving these objectives. The overall ‘Change for Children’ programme introduced the new brand, a new organisation, and core business systems such as a new fundraising system and HR system.
