Puritans were English Protestants in the 16th-17th centuries who felt the English Reformation did not go far enough. They emphasized piety, simplicity, and doing God's will. Many Puritans' beliefs were similar to Calvinism. During Queen Mary's reign, 280 Protestants were killed for their religious beliefs. This caused some Protestants to leave England. Later, under Queen Elizabeth, Protestants returned. By the end of her reign, some Puritans had become Separatists and set up their own churches. The Pilgrims were 100 Puritans who fled on the Mayflower to escape religious persecution and seek freedom in America, settling in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. Benjamin Franklin retained
