Single sideband modulation transmits only one sideband while vestigial sideband modulation transmits one full sideband and a portion of the other. Wideband FM has a greater modulation index and bandwidth than narrowband FM. CDMA has a variable capacity depending on the number of codes used but requires tight power control to avoid the near-far problem where a nearby transmitter can overwhelm a distant one. AM varies the amplitude of the carrier wave while FM varies the frequency, with FM having greater bandwidth requirements but being less susceptible to noise.
