1st newsletter air pollution - Portugal
1. Introduction
Air pollution is the effect
caused by different elements
in the atmosphere: solids,
liquids, or gases, mainly from
human activity.
The most serious problems
of air pollution arise in cities
and areas with a high level
of industrialization, although
increasingly pervasive
throughout the planet, a
fact that deserves our con-
cern.

The geographic and weather conditions are also very important for the aggravation or decrease the effect
of air pollution.
The "Smog" is defined as a combination of smoke and fog in urban-industrial areas.
The Smog comes in situations of fog; its formation is favored by foci of pollution, which increases the num-
ber of condensation nuclei (various dust particles) in the saturated or nearly saturated atmosphere
The consequences of the Smog are:
- The thermal inversion, ie the temperature increases during the day and night conditions of great cooling.
- The Smog causes asthma, bronchitis, respiratory and cardiac problems in people directly.

The suitable spaces for the concentration
of atmospheric pollution are spaced loca-
tions along the coast and sheltered re-
gions (little suction cups), in these loca-
tions there is a higher concentration of
pollution, because the air does not move
and gases accumulate.
The unfavorable spaces for the concentra-
tion of atmospheric pollution are the
mountainous regions or coastlines where
the air is rising, in these locations there is a
lower concentration of pollution.
In developed countries there is a greater
concentration of air pollution due to the
high level of industrialization and way of
life.
Air pollution
Air pollution in urban-industrial areas,
is due to the fact that these regions
are those that have more sources of
pollution, such as exhaust from cars
(which emit large amounts of green-
house gases), the domestic heating
systems, and other industrial fumes ,
forest fires and spraying with pesti-
cides.
Other factors that also contribute to
air pollution are the climatic character-
istics of each region, the geographic
location and the prevailing winds.
2. Acid rain formed with the liberation
of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide
(from factories and automobiles) to
atmosphere. Those gases that were
released into the atmosphere are
carried into the clouds by the
winds.
The combination of these gases
with oxygen and water vapor con-
tained in the clouds, giving rise to
sulfuric acid and nitric acid, in other
words, they form acid rain.
With precipitation, acid rain origi-
nates soil acidification, which will
harm agriculture and species of
trees and plants that will be born.
Another consequence is the de-
-The promotion of alternative en-
ergy, clean;
- Elimination of the use of CFC;
- The use of "clean" technologies.
- The promotion of recycling;
- Re-use of certain products, for ex-
ample the use of glass bottles re-
placing the disposable plastic;
- A reduction in the use of certain
products more pollutants, such as
plastic.
Scientists have been calling for the
intervention of governments and
populations, due to worsening
problems with the atmosphere.
To combat these problems were
adopted measures to preserve na-
ture, such as:
-The reduction of carbon dioxide
emissions into the atmosphere;
- The use of filters in factory chim-
neys;

struction of vegetation and water
pollution, which is very detrimental
to the vegetation as well as to ani-
mals.
Effects of acid rain
is reflected by the surface, then
forming the heat is concentrated
One of the consequences of air pol-
lution is the Greenhouse Effect. The
sun radiation comprises ultraviolet,
infrared, and other passing through
the atmosphere, but not all reach
the surface because it absorbs, re-
flects and diffuses part of that radia-
tion (filter function).
The increased emission of carbon
dioxide is harmful because CO2
allows the passage of solar radia-
tion to earth but then acts as a bar-
rier, not leaving out the heat which
