Data as a Profit Driver – Emerging Techniques to Monetize Data as a Strategic...DATAVERSITY
The Digital Economy is changing the way organizations do business across the globe, and is set to transform the economy on an unprecedented scale. Business optimization, and entirely new business models are emerging as data-driven technology provides unprecedented opportunity for innovation and change. In many organizations, data not only supports business profitability, but data itself has become the critical business asset.
What does it mean to leverage data as a business asset? And how can today’s data-centric technologies support the data-driven revolution? Join our expert panelists as they discuss the latest innovations in the data landscape.
DataEd Slides: Data Strategy – Plans Are Useless but Planning Is InvaluableDATAVERSITY
Too often we hear the question – can you help me with a data strategy? Unfortunately, for most, this is the wrong request because it focuses on its least valuable aspect. The more useful request is – can you help me apply data strategically in support of strategy? Yes, at early maturity phases, the process is more important than the product! Trying to write a good (much less perfect) data strategy on the first attempt is generally not productive – particularly giving the widespread acceptance of Mike Tyson’s truism: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” By refocusing lesson learning on crawl, walk, run approaches to using data strategically, data is able to keep up with agile, evolving strategies. This approach will contribute more to three primary organizational data goals than other efforts. Learn how improving:
• Your organization’s data
• The way your people use data
• The way your people use data to achieve your organizational strategy
contributes more than predetermined plans. Data are your sole non-depletable, non-degradable, durable strategic assets, and they are pervasively shared across every organizational area. Addressing existing challenges pervasively includes overcoming necessary but insufficient prerequisites and developing a disciplined, repeatable means of improving business objectives. This process (based on the theory of constraints) is where the strategic data work really occurs, as organizations identify prioritized areas where better assets, literacy, and support (data strategy components) can help an organization better achieve specific strategic objectives. Then the process becomes lather, rinse, and repeat. Several complementary concepts are covered including:
• A cohesive argument for why Data Strategy is necessary for effective Data Governance
• An overview of prerequisites for effective strategic use of Data Strategy, as well as common pitfalls
• A repeatable process for identifying and removing data constraints
• The importance of balancing business operation and innovation

Good data is like good water: best served fresh, and ideally well-filtered. Data Management strategies can produce tremendous procedural improvements and increased profit margins across the board, but only if the data being managed is of high quality. Determining how Data Quality should be engineered provides a useful framework for utilizing Data Quality management effectively in support of business strategy. This, in turn, allows for speedy identification of business problems, delineation between structural and practice-oriented defects in Data Management, and proactive prevention of future issues. Organizations must realize what it means to utilize Data Quality engineering in support of business strategy. This webinar will illustrate how organizations with chronic business challenges can often trace the root of the problem to poor Data Quality. Showing how Data Quality should be engineered provides a useful framework in which to develop an effective approach. This in turn allows organizations to more quickly identify business problems as well as data problems caused by structural issues versus practice-oriented defects and prevent these from reoccurring.
Learning objectives:
-Help you understand foundational Data Quality concepts for improving Data Quality at your organization
-Demonstrate how chronic business challenges for organizations are often rooted in poor Data Quality
-Share case studies illustrating the hallmarks and benefits of Data Quality success

Here is a list of things that you should look for in your final paper:
1. You have a single, main point (thesis statement), and all sentences in your paper directly relate to and support your thesis statement.
2. Your main point is an original, clearly defined claim and is consistent with current research on the subject selected.
3. Your word choice and language level show that you have a formal, academic, university-level audience in mind.
4. You support your initial claim with the university-level evidence you have gathered during your research.
5. If personal experience is used, you remember to convey that information without resorting to conversational first-person voice,
6. Your reader can easily determine which words are quotes, which words are summaries or paraphrases, and which words are your own ideas.
7. You present the strongest arguments against your claim; you avoid the "straw man" fallacy and argue as hard for the other side as you argue for your own.
8. You evaluate each possible objection and reply appropriately; not all objections can be refuted but all must be addressed.
9. Your title page is double spaced, as is the rest of the paper. You have a header with a running head and page number; headers are one half inch from the top of each page, and all margins are one inch. The words "Running Head:" should appear in the header on your title page, left aligned, and be followed by your running head in capital letters.
10. Your title is in standard text, not bolded or in italics, and should be centered on the page. Dates are not part of the cover for APA papers at Argosy University.

Unit 3: Synthesis Project
You will be creating an AP Exam Synthesis Question. The Synthesis Question gives you several sources and asks you to combine (synthesize) them with your own thoughts to create a cohesive essay. This is the same goal as a research paper. Your question (prompt) and sources should be formatted, labeled, and presented as on the AP Lang Exam. This will be modeled after the ones in the sample packets you were given.
Source Requirements:
· 8 sources
· No sources older than 10 years
· At least two sources published within the last two years (2020, 2021, 2022)
· Provide 1-2 sources that are images (political cartoons, graphs, charts, etc.)
· Sources should demonstrate a range of positions and approaches to the topic. Your goal is to figure out what 2-3 of the main “sides” are in the debate around the issue and represent those sides fairly.
Research Resources:
· Use this
link to access academic databases through CPS and Lane.
Example topics:
· Security vs Privacy: Personal Rights
· Standardized Education Movement
· Parenting Styles of the 21st Century
· Why Movements Matter: Voices of the People
· Technology’s Impact on American Families
Project Requirements:
Include, neatly formatted in one document
· Prompt page with directions, introduction, and assignment
· 6 sources
·
MLA citation of each source
· 3 potential thesis statements for this essay
a. One that is open
b. One that is closed
c. One that is a counter argument thesis.
· Choose one thesis statement, and create an outline of a response to ensure that others can synthesize these sources.
The most effective Synthesis Prompts give the test-takers a wide variety of sources to consider. These sources are of various types, lengths, and opinions. This diversity allows each test-taker to choose their own individual approach to the assignment while providing them with the tools to adequately synthesize into their paper.
You are going to choose EIGHT sources specific to your assigned topic. This will ensure that your group will be providing sources that show the complexity of the issue.
Therefore, when choosing your sources, keep several guidelines in mind:
1. Choose sources that cover a variety of viewpoints on your assigned topic, making sure to keep the sides evenly represented.
2. Choose sources from a wide variety of locations and formats. Use the list below as guidance; it is certainly not all-inclusive. Requirements are in CAPITAL letters. Beyond those required types, you may choose the rest of your sources at your discretion.

When you reply to others in the class, your replies should contain original thought and/or a follow up question.
Classical Argument
Persuasion and ArgumentPersuasion is the process of drawing conclusions and getting others to accept them and act upon them.Argumentation is the process of drawing conclusions after looking at both sides of an issue and getting others to accept one side based upon logic and careful exploration of facts.
Rhetoric and AudienceRhetoric is the “art of speaking or writing effectively”It is a set of skills used in college and in the business world Effective communication is an important skill in the work forceEffective communication gets our point across without embarrassment for ourselves or others. Effective communication understands what the audience does and does not know about the topic.
Aristotle’s Appeals: Ethos, Logos, and PathosAristotle was a student of Plato. Later, he was a teacher for Alexander the Great. He identified three appeals that can be used to persuade others. Ethos=ethics. Logos=logic. Pathos=emotion
Ethos=Ethics, CredibilityAs a writer, you will establish your credibility through careful research. Articles from experts in the field of study will help you build your ethos in the paper. An advertisement using ethos would be a McDonald’s commercial stating the number of years in business (hence they know how to make a decent hamburger). A car dealership might also state how long they have been at the same location. Or, the dealership might make sure you know“ 2013 Time Dealer of the year award nominee for being among the nation’s most successful auto dealers who also demonstrate a long-standing commitment to community service” (Fuson Automotive).
Logos=LogicWhen using logos in an argument, we provide facts, statistics, evidence, and reason. An automobile commercial stating the vehicle gets x mpg is proving a logos appeal. When gas prices climb, auto makers want to highlight how many miles per gallon the car can travel. Therefore, a car advertised as getting 40 mpg would appeal to a consumer who travels a distance of 40 miles to and from work. If the reader finds the evidence given “logical” it will appeal to the reader.
Pathos=EmotionA pathos appeal will tap into human emotions. Some commercials are deliberately funny and are geared to draw us to the restaurant or product being advertised. From about mid-January until February 14, TV ads focus on how we should tell our “significant” other “I love you.” Commercials such as the “Sandals Resort” plays to adults who want a romantic get-away. We are frequently told ...

Critical Thinking about Schizophrenia
A Beautiful Mind/A Brilliant Madness; Elyn Saks; Nathaniel Ayers
Turn this paper in for credit. Work on it in a group, collaboratively, but turn in your own paper (50 points).
Name: ______________________________________________________________________
You should have viewed two movies: A Beautiful Mind (2001) you must watch on your own (there’s a link in the Chapter 13 module and the formal paper module). A Brilliant Madness (2002) will be shown in class. Read “The True Story behind THE SOLOIST” before class. View the Elyn Saks TED talk in class.
1. What differences did you see between the life of John Nash shown in the commercial film A Beautiful Mind (2001) and the life shown in the documentary, A Brilliant Madness (2002)? List and describe at least three differences.
2. If you were the psychologist examining John Nash, what symptoms would you say he exhibited that would lead you to conclude he suffered from schizophrenia (refer to textbook)?
3. What treatments were utilized with John Nash (in the commercial film and in the documentary) and how effective do you think each were/why? What treatments might be used today (refer to textbook)?
4. Refer to your text for current explanations for the possible causes of schizophrenia. Include the biopsychosocial model (diathesis-stress explanation – page 639 in Okami). What do researchers think happens in the brains of schizophrenics? What scenes from the commercial film and/or documentary provides evidence to support the causes discussed in the textbook?
5. Analyze the mental health changes in John Nash, both in the development of the disorder and his subsequent recovery shown throughout the commercial film? Are the changes similar or dissimilar to the changes shown in the documentary? Is the portrayal of schizophrenia supported by what you have learned from the materials in your textbook?
6. From “The True Story Behind THE SOLOIST,” or the movie, what happened with Nathaniel Ayers? What outcome can you expect for his future?
7. View the TED talk about Elyn Saks in class: “A Tale of Mental Illness – from the Inside.” Explain the progress and outcome of her illness.
8. Does anyone (e.g. family, the state, doctors) have the right to force people with schizophrenia or any mental illness into mental institutions in order to give them treatment?

How to introduce a quotation
(quotation sandwich method)
For non-fiction texts, use author tags before introducing a quotation
Author tag = author’s last name + a writing verb.
Writing Verbs: Use these verbs to describe how an author says something
Example: Mantsios reports that “one if five men will surpass their father’s social class” (254).
“Class in America”
Mantsios: argues, asserts, reports, suggests, emphasizes, insists, claims
How to introduce a quotation
(quotation sandwich method)
For fiction texts, provide the context for the quotation. Tell the reader who the quote involves, where in the story this quote takes place, and what is happening in the quote.
Example: Half way into the field trip, Miss Moore notices that Sylvia is getting angry “you sound angry Sylvia” (Bambara 7).
Different ways to analyze a quotation (quotation sandwich method)
Explain what the quotation means and how it supports your main idea.
Example, Mantsios reports that “one if five men will surpass their father’s social class” (254). In other words, most Americans will die in the class they were born in. This proves that all Americans do not have equal chances to succeed.

AP PSYCHOLOGY
YOUR LOT IN LIFE PROJECT
As we progress through the lifespan, none of us is absolutely certain as to what course our life might take. This assignment is designed to simulate challenges you may face in your own future life and to better prepare you for overcoming potential obstacles. Additionally, it will allow us, as a group, to provide information that others in the community may access when searching for help on their topic.
In the assignment, Your Lot in Life, each of you will be randomly assigned a unique life experience that may occur during childhood. Your assignment is to gather information about your topic (or "lot" in life) from both scholarly and community sources as well as the internet. You will compile this information into a report that will be put together with reports from other students to create the guide. The goals of the assignment are:
1. To give you an opportunity to become familiar with research that has been conducted on your life issue.
2. To give you practical experience in locating likely sources of information and support from the community.
3. To give you practical experience in locating likely sources of information and support from the internet.
4. To get you to evaluate the choices available to individuals who share your life circumstance.
5. To get you to think about how your issue relates to the period of the lifespan in which it occurs.
The research for this lot:
Today you will receive your "lot" in life by random assignment.
1. You will be required to find 3 articles on your topic:
One general article – This source should describe the disorder/condition that has been assigned as your lot. This can come from a book chapter or an article that reviews the literature. These articles do not have methods sections in them. You must include a copy of the book chapter/article that you use.
Two empirically based articles from two different scholarly journals (i.e., data has been collected, they contain a “methods” section, and there is a list of references at the end). Most articles can be found in the online databases, Psycinfo and Ebscohost. If you use Ebscohost, you must select “peer reviewed” articles. Try MEL.
You must attach copies of the articles to your term paper when you turn it in. YOU MUST INCLUDE ARTICLES FROM THREE DIFFERENT JOURNALS (THE JOURNALS DON’T HAVE THE SAME NAME). IF YOU USE A BOOK CHAPTER AS YOUR GENERAL ARTICLE THE REMAINING TWO ARTICLES MUST COME FROM DIFFERENT JOURNALS.
2. Find two agencies in the community and three internet websites that can help you in meeting the challenges of your life issue. You must turn in some written material from EACH agency and a print-out from each internet website when you turn in your term paper. You may not have an agency count for both an internet source and an agency – it must be one or the other.
3. Consider how the lot impacts three areas of development. For example, how are cognitive, physical and social deve.

NIMH: Opinion or Fact
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) was formed in 1946 and is one of 27 institutes that form the National Institute of Health (NIH) (NIMH, 2019). The mission of the NIMH is “To transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.” (NIMH, 2019). There are many different mental illnesses discussed on the NIMH website to include Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The NIMH website about ADHD is effective at providing the public general information and meets the criteria of authority, objectivity, and currency.
The NIMH website about ADHD provides an overview of ADHD, discusses signs and symptoms, and risk factors. The NIMH continues with information about treatment and therapies. Information provided by the NIMH is intended for both children and adults. The NIMH concludes on the page with studies the public can join and more resources for the public such as booklets, brochures, research and clinical trials.
As described by Jim Kapoun authority can be identified by who or what institution/organization published the document and if the information in the document is cited correctly (Cornell, 2020). The information on the website is published by the NIMH which is the lead research institute related to mental health for the last 70 plus years (NIMH, 2019). On the page related to ADHD the NIMH references the program of Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) and provides a hyperlink to access the resources available with the agency (NIMH,2019). This link can be found under the support groups section in the treatment and therapies. On the website to the right of the area describing inattention the NIMH has a section on research. In this block there is a link to “PubMed: Journal Articles about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)” which will take you to a search of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) published by PubMed on ADHD (NIMH, 2019). Throughout the entire page the NIMH provides sources and hyperlinks to the sources as citations. Based on the reputation of the NIMH and the citations to the source material the website meets the criteria of authority.
According to Kapoun objectivity can be identified looking for areas where the author expresses his or her opinion (Cornell, 2020). Information provided on the NIMH page about ADHD does not express the opinion of the author. The author produces only factual information based on research. The NIMH makes it a point not to mention the names of medications when discussing treatments and only explains the medications fall in two categories stimulants and non-stimulants (NIMH, 2019). In this same area the NIMH provides hyperlinks to the NIMH Mental Health Medication and FDA website for information about medication. The extent at which the NIMH goes to not provide an opinion on the website meet.

3. Thinking about Plagiarism
The coffee giant Starbucks is suing a Bangkok-
based coffee stall for copying its logo for
approximately US$9,685
4. What about Plagiarism at PSU?
lagiarism includes the incorporation of ideas (whether paraphrased or
lifted verbatim) from outside sources, regardless of the author (i.e.,
professional scholar, website contributor, faculty member, fellow
students, etc.), without proper citation of that source for those ideas.
hether such incorporation of ideas is deliberate or not, it may well still
constitute plagiarism.
5. Why Is Oral Citation Important?
. To avoid plagiarism
. To give credit to the original author
. To enhance a speaker’s credibility
6. When Should We Use Oral Citation?
1. If the idea you are talking about is not your original thought
2. If you are quoting a source
3. If you are paraphrasing a source
4. If you are using information that is not widely known
7. What does an Oral Citation Look Like?
irect citation
uoting
. Must reference the original source
. The text produced is the exact length of the original text quoted
. Use the original author’s exact words
