Tectonic plates move due to three main forces: 1) Mantle convection causes hot rock to rise and cooler rock to sink, carrying tectonic plates along similar to a conveyor belt. 2) Ridge push occurs as dense rock moves down slopes created by heated rock at mid-ocean ridges, pushing plates away. 3) Slab pull takes place at subduction zones, where the leading edge of a dense plate pulls the rest of the plate with it under a less dense plate.
