author s points seem valid. However, I find the author, Joe Hagmann, has his tin foil hat on, and the
thought that the entertainment industry is conducting an elaborate scheme to brainwash children, is a
tad further than ridiculous.
To eliminate independence from the equation doesn t seem like a sound idea in my opinion. Yes, for
the most part parents are an excellent force of guidance that can steer a child in the correct direction,
but limited exposure to the media and the un Godly world we live in won t be as useful when they re
old enough to leave the nest. I don t believe that a parent s word will be enough to prepare oneself for
reality. For instance, you can describe to someone how to make a movie with an infinite amount of
detail, but it s trumped by the much simpler option of showing them a movie and learning by example.
Would a 9 year old, like Hagmann s be too young for complete autonomy and control in their life. Yes.
I, however, believe that the road to independence should be gradual, and that parents should have full

years old, in the year 1977, where he watched the film Star Wars 21 times. But the essay is not
actually about the Star Wars film. It is about the way Lethem used going to the movies to remove
himself, or hide from the realities of his life, such as his mother s illness and awkward pre teenage

Bar Mitzvah, at thirteen years old. Lethem also believed watching the movie twenty times would be
too mechanically round , and that adding the one more time would be more realistic. He also ends the
essay at paragraph twenty one the amount of times he went to see Star Wars.
Lethem s twenty one trips to the movie theater to see Star Wars was not entirely his
fascination with or liking of the movie. He used the Astor Plaza as a hiding place from the gradual
loss of his mother to natural illness, and already absent father. Watching the film so many times in the
summer of 1977 helped Lethem cope with his pre teenage struggles, and he describes it as when he

IAATO indicate that more than 100 different nationalities were represented by tourists who visited the
Antarctica during the 2015 16 season.

Another threat comes from smaller expeditions that are becoming increasingly common by individuals
and small parties. Antarctica requires careful planning and a series of fail safe rescue procedures if
anyone gets into difficulty. These smaller expeditions sometimes fail to do this adequately and resort
to humanitarian requests for aid from shipping or nearby national bases when they get into difficulty.
In recent years for example a small helicopter (totally unsuitable for the task) crashed into the sea off
the Antarctica Peninsula requiring rescue.
There have so far been no major pollution incidents or losses of life in Antarctica as a result of
tourism, though there was a very close call in November 2007 with the holing and subsequent sinking
by an iceberg of the M/V Explorer in the Brans field Strait. Fortunately for the passengers and crew of
the Explorer the collision occurred in calm conditions, so everyone was able to get off the ship safely

It is obvious in this self centred society that we have created in this world, that this current generation

want, and one of these things is that they can ease through life without having to put any effort in what
