Telecom Italia is one of the largest energy consumers in Italy due to its extensive telecommunications network. The company consumed over 2,000 GWh of electricity in 2008, equivalent to the annual output of a nuclear power plant. While energy efficiency efforts over the past decade led to a 20% reduction in consumption, rising energy costs increased operating expenses. Further actions are needed to reduce the energy burden on both networks and customers. Standardization will be key to promoting energy-efficient technologies and achieving coordination across different sectors and regions.

- Nella slide precedente sono state evidenziate diverse azioni volte ad ottenere una rapida disponibilità di apparati a minor consumo. In questa slide abbiamo riportato i primi risultati concreti delle azioni descritte n precedenza. In particolare, la chart riporta i dati di consumo unitario per apparati VDSL2 FTTB rilevati nelle ultime due RFQ di TI. Certamente una parte del merito di tale risultato è legato alle diverse azioni intraprese da due anni a qusta parte. Ma ovviamente, ci sono ancora ulteriori margini di ottimizzazione. Il messaggio principale di questa slide è l’evidenziare la notevole riduzione dei consumi degli apparati VDSL2 nel giro di due anni, ottenuta anche a seguito alle azioni in precedenza descritte Non tutti gli apparati sono uguali Se c’è il giusto committment, una forte riduzione è fattibile
- I consumi collegati al BB, a casa del cliente, potrebbero esplodere. Un’analisi dell’UE stima che, al 2015, questi consumi potrebbero rappresentare > del 10% dei consumi totali nell’abitazione. Oltre agli ovvi impatti su costi e sostenibilità, si rischia di associare alle telecomunicazioni una cattiva immagine, dannosa allo sviluppo delle offerte. Le azioni incorso (CoC, Energy Star, ecc) mirano a dimezzarlo. È anche necessario informare i clienti in modo che possano scegliere in modo consapevole, premiando le offerte maggiormente efficienti. I due grafici a torta riportano la distribuzione attuale dei consumi unitari (ripartizione tra user side e network side) e quella prospettica di lungo periodo. In particolare, ad oggi gli utenti a larga banda con tariffa flat (e dunque PC e modem assumibili sempre accesi) rappresentano una minoranza del totale (circa un 10% delle linee totali). Nel lungo periodo, invece, si assume che praticamente tutti abbiano la connessione a larga banda always on: questo comporterà sia un incremento del consumo medio per utente (area della torta) sia un aumento della quota parte associata allo user side. In conclusione, il messaggio che si intende trasmettere è un warning sulla sempre crescente attenzione che occorrerà prestare verso i consumi lato utente
