18. 18. Beeldenvoor de toekomst
The archives of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision(Sound and Vision) in Hilversum, of EYE in Amsterdam, and of the National Archive in The Hague contain the visual history of the past 100 years. Films, documentaries, radiobroadcast, and television programmes comprise more than 700.000 hours worth of material. The costs for creating this oeuvre have run into the billions. The educational, cultural, and economical value of this material is unprecedented.

We cannot let these collections go to waste –

Spread over a period of seven years, the FES (Fund for the reinforcement of Economic Structure) is providing a budget of 154 million Euros for the digitization of the Netherlands’ audiovisual memory. With it, the imminent threat of decay and loss of vulnerable films and video- and audiotapes is being taken away.
48. 48. De Krook and the new institute
A physical, recognisable place for a digital future.
With ‘De krook’ in the design stage, this is a perfect moment for integrating such an institute
But: an archiving institute is a project for Flanders as a whole, with a much broader vision than one site.
49. 49. Now what?
Status on 16/12/2010
50. 50. VZW de Krook
Was responsible for concept and plan for ‘De Krook’
Complex project with many stakeholders
Financed by several parties
Strong need for conscencus building
Let’s apply the same idea for the institute:
Different composition of the non profit needed to reflect the challenge
The government detailed the mission
Deliver by summer 2011
Rely on broad range experts (and past + current projects) to provide input
51. 51. And what will it do?
Dreams, hopes and questions
52. 52. Scope & business model?
Long term archiving:
Video
Audio?
Photo’s?
Documents?
…
What about digitisation? (limited?)
Restoring?
Storing the original carrier?
PPS, commercial, fully subsidised?
What else should it do?
53. 53. Access
Create a ‘youtube’ for the flemish audiovisual archive?
Or choose a more targeted approach? Providing widget to other organisations and portals…
54. 54. Layar Movie
How open should/can the API’s be?
55. 55. Development of specialised channels?
56. 56. A public place
‘De Krook’ can give physical form to the institute, but does not have to be the only place
Physical experience: Beeld en Geluid Experience, or something different?
