Electricity markets are experiencing a shift to a more decentralized structure. While peer-to-peer (P2P) markets are a promising strategy to grant consumers and small-scale producers a more active role in energy markets, in reality they face multiple complex barriers. As one of the first local P2P energy markets worldwide actually deployed, the Quartierstrom project explores the feasibility and impact of a P2P energy market in the real world in a pilot with 37 households.
September 2019 edition of the DecarbEurope primer on electric vehicles, reviewing some of the major issues to address in the coming years:

Heating without the hot air: Principles for smart heat electrificationLeonardo ENERGY
Heating in buildings is responsible for almost a third of total EU energy demand. And most of that heat is met by burning fossil fuels. In order to decarbonise heating, electrification is seen by many as a key strategy. The transformative challenge of the electrification of heating should not be underestimated. It will require strategic, ongoing policy and governance support. It requires a well-coordinated approach that cuts across several areas — buildings, individual and district heating systems, the power sector and existing heating fuel supply infrastructure. In this webinar, Dr. Jan Rosenow and Dr. Richard Lowes present pragmatic principles and policies for smart electrification of heating in Europe.

A new generation of instruments and tools to monitor buildings performanceLeonardo ENERGY
What is the added value of monitoring the flexibility, comfort, and well-being of a building? How can occupants be better informed about the performance of their building? And how to optimize a building's maintenance?
The slides were presented during a webinar and roundtable with a focus on a new generation of instruments and tools to monitor buildings' performance, and their link with the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) for buildings as introduced in the EU's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

Smart Neighborhoods speak EEBUS.
The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate how EEBUS enables an industrial approach for residential energy management by providing standardized device communication and energy management use cases. Hence, a lock-in into proprietary manufacturer specific communication can be avoided. This enables cost effective scalability, replication, and commissioning of energy management solutions at target markets.
EEBUS provides transparency and access to all energy relevant devices and thus transforms them into flexible resources for demand response. Single households become the core elements of Smart Neighborhoods and consequently of Smart Grids. The continuously evolving technology is open to further use cases and therefore facilitates the integration of other domains to the REnnovates technical platform – such as E-Mobility which is already managed through EEBUS or grid interaction.
A project manager’s journey through the various stages of delivering Edinburgh’s project to install a street lighting central management system and new energy efficient street lights across the city.
The project (or EESLP) consists of the design, supply and installation of approximately 49,557 energy efficient street lighting luminaires including disposal of redundant lanterns (except heritage/conservation lanterns which will be designed and supplied by the Employer, approximately 4,483 but installed by the Contractor); installation of approximately 63,765 nodes/telecells (approximately 54,040 on new luminaires and retrofit approximately 9,725 on existing luminaires, including 7-pin NEMA sockets), nodes supplied by the Employer; installation of new columns as required by design and replacement of damaged columns, approximately 1,600 and sundry items and small repairs to facilitate the installation.”

A policy perspective on Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS)Leonardo ENERGY
Improved management of technical building systems (TBS) can offer a cost-effective potential to reduce building energy consumption, improve the quality of life of occupants and facilitate the integration of renewable energy systems by providing flexibility to the connected energy grids.
Multiple policy initiatives related to BACS currently exist or are under development. This presentation will give an overview and some examples of European policy tools and/or local implementations. The most relevant policy tools that can help contribute accessing these savings potentials are the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD), the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), Ecodesign Directive (ED) and Energy Labelling Regulation (ELR).
Some examples of existing policy will be given and reference will be made to the recently completed Smart Readiness Indicator study and the ongoing Ecodesign BACS preparatory study.

The presentation provides an introduction to flexibility solutions, which can be used to increase efficiency in power systems. The solutions considered for the webinar are network level solutions. This introduction is followed by the presentation of FlexPlan and CoordiNet as examples of RD&I projects where flexibility solutions are being developed to change the power system landscape.

Improving energy efficiency in a municipal building: a case study in South Af...Luis Ram Rojas-Sol
This paper examines the energy efficiency impact of replacing fluorescent lamps with light emitting diode (LED),
and electric water heaters with solar thermal systems in two municipal buildings in Ekurhuleni, South Africa. A
retrofitting project with LEDs and solar water heaters offers the opportunity to increase energy efficiency and lower
electricity expenditure. For both scenarios, we present an analysis of the energy, cost and CO2 emissions savings,
as well as financial indicators to show whether the project is feasible. We also consider the energy efficiency impact
of installing motion sensors. Our analysis shows that switching from fluorescent to LEDs achieves 37.3% energy
savings and 41.6 tonnes CO2 equivalent emissions savings, and installing motion sensors results in 56.8% energy
savings and 73.8 tonnes CO2 equivalent emissions reduction. With motion sensors, the project has an NPV of
17,163 USD and a payback period of 2.4 years, compared to 29,682 USD and 2.8 years without. The solar water
heater project allows for 63.3% in energy and 9.2 tonnes CO2 equivalent emissions savings over the electric water
heaters. In addition, the effects of South African energy efficiency policies on the financial outlook of the project
were assessed. With policies, the NPV of the lighting project with LEDs and motion sensors increases to 36,263
USD and the payback period decreases to 1.4 years. For the solar water heater project, existing policies allow
receiving 56.4% of capital cost in incentives and rebates, which results in a payback period of 5.7 years.
Solwatt is a comprehensive programme designed by Solvay to implement an energy management system on large energy-intensive industrial sites.
The review phase follows two streams:
