Balancing the Books – the Economics of Digital Curation Training & EducationDigCurV
Jisc has funded several projects focused on training for digital curation. There is high demand for training from organizations taking on responsibility for digital assets, but current supply does not meet this demand. Economic theory suggests organizations are reluctant to fund general training that employees could use elsewhere. However, studies show younger and more educated employees participate more in training due to feelings of reciprocity with their employers. To better address the supply and demand imbalance for digital curation training, more research is needed on the origin of demand and effective course design at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels focused on productivity gains. Fostering trust and reciprocity between organizations and employees could also encourage greater uptake of available training opportunities.
This document summarizes the results of a survey of 204 recently graduated health sciences librarians regarding their masters of library science (MLS) education and preparation for careers in health sciences libraries. Key findings include:
- 68% of respondents felt somewhat prepared for their duties by their MLS coursework.
- The most important and available courses were online resources in health sciences and introductions to health sciences libraries.
- Internships and work experience were identified in comments as important parts of preparation more than formal coursework.
- Continued analysis of the data is planned to compare responses from hospital and academic librarians and evaluate individual MLS programs.

This report summarizes the findings of a needs assessment conducted by the IT Resource Sharing Group regarding operational and reporting needs for student data at the University of Washington. The assessment found that while Schools share many common information needs, they also have unique needs. It also found a lack of awareness about existing central systems and a proliferation of "shadow systems" developed by individual units. The report concludes there is high frustration over access to and analysis of student data. It recommends acknowledging decentralized systems and creating processes to support secure and productive development across the university.

Learning Analytics: New thinking supporting educational researchAndrew Deacon
Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts to understand and optimize learning. There are three approaches to analyzing educational data: psychometrics, educational data mining, and learning analytics. Learning analytics is being used to ask new questions by analyzing data from MOOCs and social media at both the micro and macro levels. While analytics can inform educational research, concerns remain about how it may change definitions of knowledge and reduce context.

Transitions and Extensions – What Schools Have Learned from Sakai Migrations Gary Wilhelm
This document discusses lessons learned from migrating courses from Blackboard to Sakai at multiple schools at the University of North Carolina. It includes 3 case studies:
1) The School of Public Health migrated fully online courses by replicating Blackboard functionality and organization in Sakai. They encountered minor issues with the editor and linking documents.
2) The School of Government migrated their MPA program to ensure consistency across courses. They developed tools to import content from Blackboard and provided faculty training and support.
3) The School of Medicine aims to extend Sakai use beyond the classroom for projects, websites, calendars and data repurposing. They use it for committees, research groups and hosting open/restricted files.
