 POVERTY is a denial of choices and opportunities, a
violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic
capacity to participate effectively in society.
 It means not having enough to feed and clothe a family,
not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the
land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s
living, not having access to credit.
 Poverty line is the minimum level of income
deemed adequate.
 Poverty line is significantly higher in developed
countries than in developing countries.
 The common international poverty line has in
the past been roughly $1 a day. In 2008, the
World Bank came out with a revised figure of
$1.25.
 A situation in which a person or household
lacks the resources necessary to be able to
consume a certain minimum basket of goods.
The basket consists either of food, clothing,
housing and other essentials (moderate
poverty) or of food alone (extreme poverty).
 A study on poverty has brought Pakistan
face to face with a reality that it will find
hard to accept: Every third Pakistani is
caught in the ‘poor’ bracket which means
about 58.7 million out of a total population of
180 million subsist below the poverty line.
This includes:
 52% of Balochistan
 33% of Sindh
 32% of KPK
 19% of Punjab
 “ According Jean Guenon:
“He is poor who doesn't have enough; he is
poorer who cannot get enough".
 This Graph shows the declining period of
poverty in Pakistan.
 There are several reason Of Poverty in Pakistan
Such as:
 Over population
 Unemployment
 Education
 Government Policies
 Inflation
 Corruption
 Large Scale Import
 Political Instability
 Report Of UNDP(United Nation Development
Program): According to a UNDP report, 65.5 percent
population of Pakistan earns less than 2$ per day.
 SPDC (Social Policy Development Centre) Report:
According to the SPDC, 88 percent of Baluchistan’s
population, 51 percent of NWFP, 21 percent of Sindh
and 25 percent of Punjab’s population is prey to poverty
and deprivation
 Asian Development Bank Report: According to the ADB
report, poverty is spreading in Pakistan due to the
rising population, Pakistan’s internal situation,
agriculture backwardness, unequal income distribution,
defense expenditure, and increase in utility charges and
rise in unproductive activities.
 Many infants born into poverty have a low birth
weight, which is associated with many preventable
mental and physical disabilities.
 Diseases are more widely spread because poor people
cannot afford hygienic foods and pure drinking water
which is much expensive.
 Poor families experience much more stress than
middle-class families. Besides financial uncertainty,
these families are more likely to be exposed to series of
negative events and “bad luck,” including illness,
depression, family death etc.
 Homelessness, or extreme poverty, carries with it a
particularly strong set of risks for families, especially
children. They experience more health problems.
Government takes several steps to overcome
Poverty.
 Health Insurance
 People Work Program
 Employees old age benefit Institute(EOBI)
 Benazir Income Support Program
 Promote industrialization
 Equal distribution of resources
 Provision of job opportunities
 Establishment of justice and equality
 Prevalence of education
 Controlling of inflation and other economic indicators
 Developing investment friendly environment by reducing
taxes
 Establishing more technical institute in order to get
people well skilled.
Government is the one who is blamed for
poverty in the country because this is their
responsibility to eliminate this problem. It
can be reduced if more job opportunities are
create which would help them in earning
more and would help them to educate their
children.
