The Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) is a Ministerial-level international climate change initiative that is focused on the development of improved cost-effective technologies for carbon capture and storage (CCS). As part of our commitment to raising awareness of CCS policies and technology, CSLF, with support from the Global CCS Institute, is running a series of webinars showcasing academics and researchers that are working on some of the most interesting CCS projects and developments from around the globe. This first webinar comes to you from Abu Dhabi – the site of the Mid-Year CSLF Meeting and home of the Al Reyadah Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) Project. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the world’s major oil exporters, with some of the highest levels of CO2 emissions per capita. These factors alone make this a very interesting region for the deployment of CCUS both as an option for reducing CO2 emissions, but also linking these operations for the purposes of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations. In the UAE, CCUS has attracted leading academic institutes and technology developers to work on developing advanced technologies for reducing CO2 emissions. On Wednesday, 26th April, we had the opportunity to join the Masdar Institute’s Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Mohammad Abu Zahra to learn about the current status and potential for CCUS in the UAE. Mohammad presented an overview of the current large scale CCUS demonstration project in the UAE, followed by a presentation and discussion of the ongoing research and development activities at the Masdar Institute. This webinar offered a rare opportunity to put your questions directly to this experienced researcher and learn more about the fascinating advances being made at the Masdar Institute.

Mission Innovation aims to reinvigorate and accelerate global clean energy innovation with the objective to make clean energy widely affordable. Through a series of Innovation Challenges, member countries have pledged to support actions aimed at accelerating research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) in technology areas where MI members believe increased international attention would make a significant impact in our shared fight against climate change. The Innovation Challenges cover the entire spectrum of RD&D; from early stage research needs assessments to technology demonstration projects. The Carbon Capture Innovation challenge aims to explore early stage research opportunities in the areas of Carbon Capture, Carbon Utilization, and Carbon Storage. The goal of the Carbon Capture Innovation Challenge is twofold: first, to identify and prioritize breakthrough technologies; and second, to recommend research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) pathways and collaboration mechanisms. During the webinar, Dr Tidjani Niass, Saudi Aramco, and Jordan Kislear, US Department of Energy, provided an overview of progress to date. They also highlighted detail opportunities for business and investor engagement, and discuss future plans for the Innovation Challenge.

The Asia CCUS Network has been successfully launched on 22-23 June 2021 with initially 13 countries (all ASEAN member countries, the United States, Australia, and Japan) and more than 100 international organisations, companies, financial and research institutions that share the vision of CCUS development throughout the Asian region. The Network members have expressed their intention to participate to share the vision of the Asia CCUS Network that aims to contribute to the decarbonisation of emissions in Asia through collaboration and cooperation on development and deployment of CCUS. The Asia CCUS Network provides opportunities for countries in the region to work and collaborate on the low emission technology partnership that will eventually help to build countries’ capability to lower the cost of CCUS technology and its deployment through the collaboration of research and innovation. At the 2nd Asia CCUS Network (ACN) Knowledge Sharing Conference, the Asia CCUS Network is very pleased to invite experts from the Department of Energy, United States of America (USDOE) to share their insights and experiences about CCUS development and policy to support the deployment of CCUS technology. The ACN will be an active forum to bridge the knowledge gap on CCUS technologies, policy development to support the development and deployment of CCUS in Asia. Thus, this conference hosted in collaboration with IEA will help to bring in update knowledge, opportunity for investment in CCUS in Asia.

To highlight the research and achievements of Australian researchers, the Global CCS Institute with ANLEC R&D will hold a series of webinars throughout 2016. Each webinar highlights a specific ANLEC R&D research project and the relevant report found on the Institute’s website. The fifth webinar of the series looked at the development of an aqueous ammonia-based post-combustion capture technology for Australian conditions. CSIRO has been developing aqueous ammonia (NH3)-based post-combustion CO2 capture (PCC) technology for its application under Australian conditions since 2008. Previous pilot-plant trials at Delta Electricity’s Munmorah Power Station demonstrated the technical feasibility of the process and confirmed some of the expected benefits. With further support from the Australian Government and ANLEC R&D, CSIRO has worked closely with universities in Australia and China to develop an advanced aqueous NH3-based CO2 capture technology. The advanced technology incorporates a number of innovative features which significantly improve its economic feasibility. This webinar presented the advancements made from a recently completed project funded by ANLEC R&D, and was presented by Dr Hai Yu and Dr Kangkang Li from CSIRO Energy.

To highlight the research and achievements of Australian researchers, the Global CCS Institute with ANLEC R&D will hold a series of webinars throughout 2016. Each webinar will highlight a specific ANLEC R&D research project and the relevant report found on the Institute’s website. This is the fourth webinar of the series, which focused on the development of standards and regulations for CO2 pipelines for future CCS projects. This webinar discussed best practice pipeline design for CO2 pipelines, with particular reference to risk assessment requirements. This presentation introduced a report that was prepared to inform the future development of CO2 pipelines in Australia, as part of integrated CO2 capture and storage infrastructure. This project was undertaken to provide guidance on best practice for the use of CO2 dispersion modelling within the context of the Australian pipeline design standard. The project deliverable was a comprehensive report that provides guidance on the current international best practice in modelling CO2 dispersion, and identifies appropriate, fit-for-purpose modelling tools that can be used at different stages in the pipeline design process. One of the main conclusions from this project was that sufficient information and modelling tools are available to allow a new CO2 pipeline to be designed in accordance with Australian Standard 2885. This webinar was presented by Phil Johnson from Sherpa Consulting.

Vladimir Vaysman from WorleyParsons gave a Global CCS Institute webinar on 12 March 2013 to present a generic methodology developed to provide independent verification of the impact on a coal–fired power station of installing and operating a post-combustion capture plant. Vladimir illustrated the methodology using Loy Yang A power station in Australia in five different scenarios that cover carbon capture, air cooling, coal drying and plant optimisation. The methodology offers a sound approach to provide performance data and protect technology vendor IP while also providing confidence to the wider CCS community to evaluate a project. Vladimir is a Project Manager with more than 31 years of engineering experience, including 14 years with WorleyParsons. He has undertaken an array of design and analysis studies and developed significant expertise across a range of technologies, from pulverised coal and circulating fluidised bed, to integrated gasification combined cycle and carbon capture. Vladimir has participated in projects in Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Moldova, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine.

Completing field tests that demonstrate that geologic storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) can be conducted safely and commercially is one step towards developing robust strategies for mitigating large point source CO2 emissions. The Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership Program (MRCSP) large volume CO2 injection test is providing data for improving capacity estimates and demonstrating storage capacity within a regionally significant resource. MRCSP is also evaluating CO2 storage potential in Ohio and other areas of the Midwest and the East Coast through regional mapping and exploratory site characterization. Lessons learned from pressure data analysis, modeling, monitoring technologies assessment, accounting, regional mapping and exploration enable technology advancements needed to help carbon capture and storage reach a commercial stage. This webinar presented an update of the progress made to date and key findings from the MRCSP large volume CO2 injection test and regional exploration work. Webinar: How to manage technical risk in CO2 capture technology development

Scaling up, integrating and optimising CO2 capture plants can be associated with high risks and costs. Currently, there is a lack of standard codes and procedures to be used, making the development of CCS projects challenging. In this webinar, DNV GL presented the recommended qualification procedure for scaling-up CO2 capture technologies, from the lab to commercial scale. The technical risks associated with new CO2 capture technologies can be managed through a systematic qualification process. This process focuses on the identification of the risks and indicates how they can be evaluated and reduced with adequate qualification methods, such as analyses and testing. Aker Solutions illustrated how this procedure has been applied for scaling up their proprietary CO2 capture technology. This webinar was presented by Anastasia Isaenko, Consultant, Carbon Capture and Storage from DNV GL and Oscar Graff, Chief Technology Officer, Department of Clean Carbon from Aker Solutions.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
