Township Limited
(MET City), a wholly
owned subsidiary of
Reliance Industries
Limited (RIL) is devel-
oping a world class
Greenfield Smart City
near Gurugram,”
Mukesh Ambani’s firm
said in a statement.
“Nihon Kohden, one
of the 4 Japanese com-
panies and manufac-
turer of medical devic-
es, recently did a
ground-breaking cere-
mony on their plot at
MET City,” it said.
“This facility of Nihon
Kohden will be their
largest manufacturing
facility in India, and it
will further enhance
the position of MET
City as a leading loca-
tion for setting up com-
panies in Haryana and
North India.”
MET City houses
four leading Japanese
companies in its inte-
grated industrial town-
ship. Panasonic, Denso
and T-Suzuki are the

He recalled that he
could raise money to

Seven held for killing ragpicker while performing car stunts

Gurugram: A day after
a ragpicker was killed
and two workers of a
liquor store suffered
serious injuries after a
car allegedly rammed
into them while per-
forming stunts outside
a liquor store in Gur-
gaon’s Udyog Vihar
Phase 4, the police on
Monday arrested seven
people in the case.
According to the po-
lice, on Sunday around
3 am, they received in-
formation that a man
had been killed while
some were injured out-
side a liquor store in
the Udyog Vihar area,
following which sever-
al teams rushed to the
spot.
The deceased, a rag-
picker, was yet to be
identified, while two
liquor store workers –
Annu Kumar Gupta
and Sushil Kumar –
were admitted to a hos-
pital for treatment.
In the police com-
plaint, Gupta had said
that around 1.50 am, he
and some workers do-
ing inventory work in-
side the store heard a
commotion and saw
that some men in four
cars were hurling abus-
es and fighting among
themselves.
“…other workers
from the store came
outside. We stood near
the store’s gate and an
unknown ragpicker
who usually picks up
scrap and empty bot-
tles near the store was
standing near us. Two
cars were performing
dangerous stunts,
while the two other car
drivers were fighting.
They drove their cars
at a high speed towards
the road outside,” Gup-
ta said in the com-
plaint. “Some minutes
later, an Ertiga car
drove towards us from
far at a high speed and
the driver pulled the
handbrake just near
the gate of the liquor
store and rammed the
car into me, a colleague
and the ragpicker, de-
liberately with the in-
tention of killing us,”
he added.
Police said the rag-
picker was rushed to a
hospital, where he was
declared brought dead.
An FIR was registered
against the accused un-
der sections 302 (mur-
der), 307 (attempt to
murder), 323 (voluntar-
ily causing hurt), 147
(rioting), 149 (unlawful
assembly) and 120-B
(criminal conspiracy)
of the Indian Penal
Code.
The police identified
the arrested accused as
Saurabh Sharma, Ra-
hul, Ravi Singh, Vikas,
Mohit, Mukul Soni and
Luv.

It said the possibility
of tampering with the

“The prosecution has
to bring home the charg-
es levelled against them
beyond reasonable
doubt, which prosecu-
tion failed to do in the
instant case, resultantly
,
the court is left with no
alternative but to acquit
the accused, though in-
volved in a very heinous
crime,” it said.
It may be true that if
the accused go unpun-
ished or are acquitted, a
kind of agony and frus-
tration may be caused to
society in general and to
the family of the victim
in particular, however
the law does not permit
courts to punish the ac-
cused on the basis of
moral conviction or on
suspicion alone, the
bench said.

Mehrauli man’s
body found

body of a man was
found near Sanjay Van
cremation ground in
southwest Delhi’s Kis-
hangarh area on Tues-
day, police said.
The deceased was

He is survived by his

Charge sheet filed in 40 out of 83 UAPA
cases within 90 days: Delhi Police to HC
Delhi Police has in-
formed the high court
here that out of 83 cases
registered by it under
the Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act
(UAPA) since 2005,
charge sheets were filed
in 40 cases within 90
days, while an exten-
sion was sought in 20
cases.
The data was submit-
ted on the direction of
the Delhi High Court
which was hearing a
plea by a UAPA accused
challenging a trial
court order extending
the 90-day deadline
granted to the Delhi Po-
lice in the case against
him.
The police said
though a total of 98 cas-
es were lodged under
the anti-terror law, 15 of
them were transferred
to the National Investi-
gation Agency (NIA).
Justices Mukta Gup-
ta and Anish Dayal had
in October asked the
police to place on re-
cord the number of
cases under the UAPA
where it filed the charge
sheet within the stipu-
lated 90 days period.
The high court had
also asked the police to
disclose the details of
instances where a

after seeking an exten-

the upcoming civic
body elections is prov-
ing to be a difficult task
for the BJP's Delhi
unit, which has been
inundated by recom-
mendations and bioda-
tas of over 15,000 prob-
ables, party leaders
said on Tuesday.
Teams of observers
collected feedback
about probables from
local BJP leaders dur-
ing a two-day process.
Each team, compris-
ing two central and
Delhi unit members,
visited each of the 14
districts on Monday
and Tuesday to collect
the names of proba-
bles with good reputa-
tions and high winna-
bility factor, the lead-
ers said.
Present and former
MLAs of Delhi's 70 As-
sembly constituencies,
presidents and general
secretaries of 270 man-
dals (roughly as per
ward boundaries) and
250 wards recommend-
ed the names of three
probables each, said a
senior leader of the
BJP's Delhi unit associ-
ated with the shortlist-
ing process.
Party leaders and
workers aspiring to
contest the elections
are also submitting
their biodatas in large
numbers at the BJP's
Delhi unit office and to
senior functionaries.
We have so far re-
ceived over 15,000 appli-
cations through these
channels and the num-
ber will rise further,
said the senior leader.
The nomination pro-
cess for the polls,
which started on Mon-
day, will conclude on
November 14.
We are trying to pro-
cess as many applica-
tions as possible but it
is proving to be a tough
task due to the short
time available to file
the nominations, said
another senior Delhi

Sukesh Chandrashekhar has written a fresh letter to
LG VK Saxena seeking a CBI probe against Arvind
Kejriwal and others, his lawyer said on Tuesday.
Chandrashekhar alleged that after his last complaint
to the LG was reported in the media, he had received
“severe threat” from the jail administration on behalf
of AAP leader Satyendar Jain and then DG Prisons
Sandeep Goel. “After my last complaint application
was released on media, from last two days there has
been severe threat that I have been receiving from the
jail administration on behalf of Satyendar Jain and DG
prisons Sandeep Goel that I will be taught a serious
lesson...” he said in the letter written on November 4.

BLACK MONEY KEEPS
TUMBLING OUT AND
CASH STILL RULES
emonetisation hap-
pened six years ago
but not a year has
passed without a re-
view of its conse-
quences on the quantum of liq-
uid cash in the market which it
was supposed to bring down to
curb the circulation of black
money and promote digital
economy
. In the last six years the
digital economy has indeed
made much progress with con-
sumers and traders finding it
more convenient. Stringent up-
per limits for cash transactions
and bank withdrawals have had
notable impact.
On the flip side, however, it
did not bring down the currency
in circulation to the desired
level. A Reserve Bank of India
report said that almost 99 per-
cent of the Rs 3 to 4 lakh crore
black money that was invalidat-
ed returned to the system. Fresh
seizures of black money, which
run into thousands of crores,
prove that the exercise was fu-
tile. The dream of a cashless
economy also lies shattered as
currency with the public has in-
creased to Rs 30.88 lakh crore.

Belagavi ignited a controver-
sy when he asserted that the
word Hindu has a Persian
origin with a very “dirty”
meaning which will make
Hindus “ashamed”. Jarkiho-
li is a leader of the Scheduled
Tribe Valmiki Nayak com-
munity. Countering BJP’s
claim on Hindutva, Jarkiholi
stated that because of its Per-
sian origin there was no link
between the word Hindu and
India. “How did ‘Hindu’ be-
come yours,” he asked the
BJP. He insisted that a Wiki-
pedia search would confirm
his statement.
That may not be correct as
the Wiki page describes the
word Hindu as being derived
from the river Indus or Sind-
hu which has originated
from Sanskrit and the Indo
Aryan. According to Gavin
Flood who is regarded as an
authority on Hinduism, the
term Hindu “first occurs as a
Persian geographical term
for the people who lived be-
yond the river Indus”.
Jarkiholi alone can ex-
plain his intention for raking
up this controversy when
Karnataka is preparing for
Assembly elections and his
party is on a weak footing.
The immediate fallout could
be on Hindu votes consolidat-
ing behind the BJP at a time
when the powerful Lingayat
community is upset about
the arrest of their chief pon-
tiff in a sexual harassment
case. Lingayats have so far
been the biggest supporters
of the BJP. To control the
damage Randeep Singh Sur-
jewala of the Congress, who
is in-charge of Karnataka,
condemned the remark and
said, “Hinduism is a way
of life…”

Triggering a controversy
(again), Ananta Rai, who has

Pramanik and said the crea-
tion of a new Union Territo-
ry is only a matter of time.
Rai who leads a faction of
the Greater Cooch Behar had
an hour-long meeting with
Pramanik in Bhetaguri town
of Cooch Behar district. “I
believe it (new Union Terri-
tory) will happen soon. I can-
not comment on the time and
date. But you can be rest as-
sured that the new union ter-
ritory of Cooch Behar is only
a matter of time,” Rai told
reporters after the meeting.
Asked about Rai’s com-
ments regarding union terri-
tory, Pramanik, the MP of
Cooch Behar constituency,
said, “I will comment on it
when the time comes.” Rai’s
organisation Greater Cooch
Beharhasbeendemandingan

Cooch Behar and several oth-
er districts in the northern
part of West Bengal.
His remark drew a sharp
retort from the ruling Trina-
mool Congress which said it
would never allow the divi-
sion of West Bengal. “They

be no division of West Ben-
gal,” TMC leader and North
Bengal Development Minis-
ter Udayan Guha said.
THE GEOGRAPHY
North Bengal, with its eight
districts including pictur-
esque Darjeeling, is both eco-
nomically important for West
Bengal as it houses the mon-
ey-minting tea, timber and
tourism industries. The re-
gion is also strategically im-
portant for the country for its
Siliguri corridor, commonly
known as ‘chicken neck’, as it
connects the North Eastern
states with the rest of India.
The region, which shares a
border with Nepal, Bhutan
and Bangladesh, has wit-
nessed several violent state-
hood movements since the
early eighties by various eth-
nic groups such as Gorkhas,
Rajbanshis, Koch and
Kamatapuri communities.
The BJP’s Alipurduar MP
John Barla and MLAs of Mat-
igara-Naxalbari and Dab-
gram-Phulbari seats, Anan-
damay Barman and Shikha
Chatterjee respectively, have
demanded that a Union terri-
tory be carved out of North
Bengal districts. BJP MLA
from Kurseong Bishnu Pras-
ad Sharma last year had writ-
ten to BJP national president
J P Nadda demanding separa-
tion of Darjeeling Hills from
West Bengal.
FOR SOME TIME
This demand for carving out
a Union Territory compris-
ing North Bengal districts
out of Bengal, made by two
BJP MPs from the region in
July 2021 had sparked off a
sharp reaction with the rul-
ing TMC with party Supremo
Mamata Banerjee stating she
would not allow any part of
Bengal to lose its freedom
and be dependant on the na-
tional capital.
Barla had told news agency
PTI in a telephonic conversa-
tion, “I made the demand that
there have been movements
here for a separate Kamtapu-
ri, a greater Cooch Behar and
for Gorkhaland. My belief is
that North Bengal should be
detached and made into a
separate union territory
.”
The MP who has earlier led
an agitation for an autono-
mous tribal area in the last
decade, said small states per-
form better. North Bengal is
neglected, it also faces secu-
rity issues. Our economy is
affected, tea gardens are be-
ing shut down. We will be bet-
ter off as a Union territory
.
Barla, said that he along
with others from the region
would be meeting both Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and
the Union Home Minister
Amit Shah on this issue as
well as would raise it in Par-
liament. BJP has four MPs
from the region and at least
one of them Jayanta Roy
from Jalpaiguri said that
though Barlas comments
were made in his personal
capacity, he supported them.
DIFFERENCE OF OPINION?
However, Dilip Ghosh had
said his party does not have
any such agenda. “None of
our officials has said any
such thing,” he had said,
claiming that attempts were
being made by the TMC to
malign the BJP by raking up
various issues. “I want to
make it clear that the BJP
has no such agenda to divide
Bengal or create a different
state,” Ghosh had said.
The Trinamool Congress
had come out strongly de-
spite BJP’s denials. CM
Mamata Banerjee had said,
“They should be ashamed af-
ter their humiliating loss in
the elections but, instead,
they are trying to divide Ben-
gal. In whose interest are
they trying to split Bengal?”

New Delhi (PTI): Senior-most Supreme Court judge
Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud is all set to become the
50th head of the Indian judiciary on Wednesday when
President Draupadi Murmu would administer the
oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhawan here. His
illustrious father Y V Chandrachud was the longest-
serving Chief Justice of India (CJI) and remained at the
helm from February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985. Justice
Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for two years till
November 10, 2024. SC judges retire at the age of 65.
KERALA HC ASKS GUV NOT TO TAKE ANY

Kochi (PTI): The Kerala High Court on Tuesday asked
Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who is Chancellor
of the universities in the state not to take any action
against the vice- chancellors who were given show-
cause notices by him until the court hears the matter.
Justice Devan Ramachandran gave three more days’
time to the chancellor to file his reply and posted the
matter for further hearing on November 17. Khan, as
Chancellor of universities, had issued show-cause
notices to VCs of 11 universities in the state.

Rajya Sabha member P Chidambaram
on Tuesday urged the people of Gujarat

New Delhi (Agencies):
The Union Ministry of
Home Affairs in its 2021-
22annualreporthassaid
that there was a need to
updatetheNationalPop-
ulation Register (NPR).
The report, published
on Monday (November
7), has underlined the
need to update the NPR
database across the
country, except Assam.
Through this, changes
in the demographic
data due to births,
deaths and migration in
the country will be
identified and record-
ing information of peo-
ple and their families
will also be possible,
said the report.
The report stated that
due to Covid-19 pan-
demic, the work of up-
dating the NPR and
other field activities
had come to a halt.
The home ministry
added that the people
will be able to update
the NPR data them-
selves. No documents or
biometrics will be col-
lected during the upda-
tion. The Central gov-
ernment has approved
a budget of Rs 3,941
crore for the same.
The report stated that
the NPR has been pre-
pared under various
provisions of the Citi-
zenship Rules, 2003
made under the Citizen-
ship Act, 1955.
The name, gender,
date of birth, place of
birth, place of resi-
dence, father’s and
mother’s name were up-
dated and Aadhaar
number, mobile number
and ration card num-
bers were collected. The
ministry said that the
register needs to be up-
dated to include the
changes due to births,
deaths and migration.
The NPR was pre-
pared in 2010 and was
updated in 2015. Several
politicalpartiesopposed
it and alleged that it was
a step towards making
the National Register of
Citizens (NRC).
According to the re-
port, from April 1, 2021
to December 31, 2021, a
toatl of 1,414 people
across the country were
provided certificates of
citizenship under the
Citizenship Act, 1955.

New Delhi (PTI): The CBI on Tuesday conducted searches
at seven locations in Jammu, Pathankot, Rewari and
Karnal in connection with the police sub-inspector
recruitment scam in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
The searches were conducted at the premises of arrested
mastermind Yatin Yadav and CRPF constable Surender
Singh among others, they said. The CBI had taken over
investigation into the case on August 3 on a reference
from the Jammu and Kashmir government.

strong growth in Goods
Services Tax (GST)
collections to claim that
demonetisation was a
success, or at least not
the disaster it was pur-
ported to be. Apparent-
ly, 23 quarters after de-
monetisation, last quar-
ter’s strong GST collec-
tions are evidence of
increasing formalisa-
tion of India’s economy
and hence, the fulfil-
ment of demonetisa-
tion’s stated goals. This
is as bizarre as former
US President Donald
Trump claiming in No-
vember 2018 that since
it was among the cold-
est months on record in
America, global warm-
ing and climate change
are a hoax.

tion was the elimination
of black money
. While
black money is a collo-
quial term with no pre-
cise definition, it is gen-
erally acknowledged as
untaxed money
. Such
unaccounted money is
typically used to buy
real estate, gold, luxury
goods, etc. and only a
very small fraction is
stored as cash. If there
is a reduction in overall
black money in the
economy, it should logi-
cally be reflected as
higher tax collections.

been put under re-
straint after a series of
search and seizure ac-
tions on 50 premises in

raids were done on a few
business groups en-
gaged in coal trading/
transportation, execu-
tion of civil contracts,
extraction of iron ore
and production of
sponge iron on Novem-
ber 4, 2022. Those
searched include two
politically exposed per-
sons and their associ-
ates. The searches were
carried out at more than
50 premises spread over
Ranchi, Godda, Bermo,
Dumka, Jamshedpur,
Chaibasa, Patna, Guru-
gram and Kolkata.
The operation has led
to the seizure of a large

tal evidence. A prelimi-
nary analysis of this

come of India’s life insur-
ance companies rose by
15.3% to `24,916.58
crore in October 2022,
data from the Life Insur-
ance Council showed. All
the 24 life insurers had a
collective new business
premium income of
`21,606.25 crore in the
same month a year ago
(October 2021). LIC -- the
only state-owned and the
largest life insurer in the
country -- recorded 18%
rise in its new business
premium at `15,920.13
crore during the month,

solidated loss to `593.9

2022. The company had

neously and getting entan-
gled with each other.
The Chief Economic Ad-
visor said that the world is
passing through a ‘polycri-
sis’, which is multiple cri-
ses of high inflation, tight-
ening of monetary policy,
high interest rates, slow-
down in China which af-
fected global supply chain,
and the Russia-Ukraine
war.
“The challenges that the
country is facing are un-
precedented since World
War II. But India is in a sta-
ble situation and the
growth momentum is good.
India will have a growth
rate of 6.5% to 7% in 2022-
23, which is considered to
be good despite a high infla-
tion rate of 7.4%,” he said.
Nageswaran said that
what India needs at the mo-
ment is to maintain macro-
economic stability, aug-
ment foreign exchange re-
serves and their judicious
use, and finance the trade
deficit due to high imports
of crude oil.
“Financing the trade
deficit is a challenge for the
country caused by high
crude imports. The flow of
FDI is steady while portfo-
lio investments have be-
come volatile as the USD is
becoming attractive due to
high interest rates in the
United States,” he added.
The CEA said that al-
though India has become
the fifth-largest economy
in the world, the country’s
per capita income needs to
increase.
New Delhi (PTI): The production of major chemicals rose 7.22%
to 32.56 lakh tonnes during the April-June period of this fiscal,
as against 30.37 lakh tonnes in the
year-ago period, barring pesticides
and insecticides, according to the
Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.
Production of all major chemicals
like Alkali chemicals, inorganic
chemicals, organic chemicals has
increased except pesticides, insecti-
cides, and dyes and pigments in the said period, the ministry said
in its monthly report.

ment Regulation) MMDR
Act in 2021, private agencies

COAL STOCK AT
THERMAL POWER
PLANTS AT 25.6 MT
New Delhi (PTI): The closing
stock of coal at domestic
thermal power
plants as
on October
31 was
25.6 million
tonnes (MT), the govt said on
Tuesday. The supply of coal to
the power sector is regularly
being supervised by the coal
ministry in close coordination
with the ministries of power
and railways. The domestic
coal supply to the power
sector is 12% more than
the same period of last year,
which is the highest ever.

Washington (PTI): As-
serting that India and the
United States share a
strong bilateral relation-
ship, US Treasury Secre-
tary Janet Yellen has said
there is a great potential
for the trade to grow be-
tween the two countries
that will benefit their work-
ing people.
She also said the US and
India have a strong belief
in democratic values and a
commitment to upholding
the rules-based interna-
tional order, especially at
“this time of geopolitical
risks”.
“We have a very strong

ing costs, a new
report showed
on Tuesday

About 63%
of healthcare
and pharmaceutical indus-
try professionals in North
America expected a disrup-
tion to digitalisation initia-
tives in their business
units due to inflation. The
same opinion was ex-
pressed by 55% of industry
professionals in Europe.
Full-fledged indigenously
designed and developed
fifth generation (5G) equip-
ment that includes core
and radio network compo-
nents could be
commercially
available by
March next
year, a top offi-
cial said.
“The pro-
cesses will take an extra
three to four months. So, I
potentially feel that by
March next year, it (C-DoT)
will be in a position to actu-
ally commercialise both
radio and core equipment,”
K Rajaraman, secretary,
DoT told ET.
New Delhi (PTI): State-
owned oil marketing com-
panies IOC, BPCL and
HPCL posted a second con-
secutive quarterly loss to-
talling `2,748.66 crore in
July-September as a one-
time LPG payout by the
government could not
mask the losses from petrol
and diesel prices freeze.
According to stock ex-
change filings by the three
fuel retailers, the losses
were due to erosion in the
marketing margin on pet-
rol, diesel and domestic
LPG.
Indian Oil Corporation
(IOC) on October 29 report-
ed a net loss of `272.35
crore for the July-Septem-
ber quarter, which came on
the back of `1,995.3 crore
loss in the previous three
months.
On November 3, HPCL
reported a loss of `2,172.14
crore in the second quarter
of the current fiscal, on the
back of its highest-ever
quarterly loss of `10,196.94
crore in April-June.
BPCL on Monday posted
a loss of `304.17 crore in
July-September, according
to a company’s stock ex-
change filing. In the first
quarter, it posted a loss of
`6,263.05 crore.

when you
used to study
in school,
did you ever
thought that
one day you would reach
such heights?
JP Nadda: No, I had never
thought along these lines
and I don’t usually think
much about myself. What-
ever responsibilities I
would be given or the envi-
ronment I would be in, I
would shape myself ac-
cordingly. So, I had not
thought of this, but cir-
cumstances became such
that I entered the political
field, where I had the
chance to carry out several
responsibilities and I make
the effort to ensure that I
give my best always.
z I heard somewhere
that your mother asked
you not to join politics?
Yes. See every mother is ap-
prehensive and considers
politics to be akin to risk-
takingandtheyareworried
about the future of their
child. My mother was in-
clined towards education
and was extremely under-
standing so when I tried to
convince her, she agreed.
Myfatheralwayslistenedto
reasonafterwhichhewould
give go ahead on sound log-
ic. So, I did a lot of things
wherein, they completely
supported me. Like for ex-
ample, no father would give
their child permission to
swim across the Ganga, but
he permitted me and said
cross it if you can. So, I
crossed Ganga six times in
Patna. He used to look out
for me using binoculars
since Ganga’s swell is im-
menseandthebanksarefar
off.Wehadagroupof about
a dozen people where one
person would always carry
a tube with them so that in
case of need, it can be used.
If you do it properly
, then it
would take 45 minutes to
reach the other bank, but at
times, people get carried
over by the strong current
of the stream so at times, it
even takes over an hour to
reach the bank.
z So seated in Delhi,
don’t you miss Pat-
na and Shimla?
Definitely
, old mem-
ories are refreshed,
and when I get
time, I meet
oldfriendstoo.
And when I
visit Patna, I
sometimes visit my college
andschool.Mypoliticallife,
public life, or student life
began in Shimla. I learnt
student activism here. I
graspeditthere(Patna),but
it was here (Shimla) that I
activated it and came up as
an activist. I would want
you to visit this University
,
where about 4,000-5,000 peo-
ple live here like a family
.

like Panditji’s tea shop and
Thakur Dhaba. So during
myrecentvisitafterseveral
years, I met them also.
Thakur Sahab has grown
old now, but I spoke to him

come to Dhaba to which he

z Elections are going to
be held in Himachal and
Amit Shah had said
that Gujarat is Modiji’s
‘Janma-bhoomi,’ but
Himachal has been his
‘Karma-bhoomi’. What’s
your take on this?
See, When Modiji became
General Secretary and the
first assignment that he
took was of North-India
and states like Haryana,
Punjab, Himachal JK
were under him and his
‘Centre’ was Chandigarh.
And Modiji has been ha-
bitual of working system-
atically since the begin-
ning so he started making
rounds, had set up the or-
ganisation and in a short
period, he gave voice to
BJP in this region and
made it a powerful party
.
z That means you must
have had regular inter-
action with Modiji at
that time?
Yes, I was the LoP then.
When I was the National
President of Yuva Morcha,
I used to stay in Delhi
and he used to work
as National General
Secretary
. He had an
immense interest in
youth and
used to guide
the activities
of Yuva Mor-
cha. So, it was
then that the contact grew
and I got to work with him.
But soon after I came back
here (Himachal) and con-
tested the polls and became
the LoP, it was then that he
came to Himachal as State
in- charge and so this is
how I got a chance to work
with him.
z Once a government
had also fallen and then
you formed govern-
ment...
Yes, under his leadership,
we formed government in
Punjab, Himachal Pradesh
and Haryana.
z Recently PM Modi
came to Bilaspur, you
were also there and a
huge crowd has assem-
bled for the rally. Does it
mean even today he has
huge popularity
amongst the masses?
Yes, apart from popularity,
there is a special bond and
people from Himachal con-
sider him their own, be-
cause he has toured so
much on the grassroots
level and established con-
nections with households.
People know him here like
their own and there would
be individuals saying
Modiji sat here and spoke
to people or that he ate food
at this house or that Modiji
chaired a ‘Baithak’ here
and so many people attend-
ed that meeting. When we
come to Shimla everyone
says that Modiji used to sit
in this coffee house and
used to gauge the political
atmosphere talking with
journalists here and inter-
acting with them. So, the
journos from that time
know him and Modiji too
knows them. And what
then happens is that people
hear from others and there
are several of his pictures
from Mall Road area and
the people who accompa-
nied him in those pics also
say that they spent time
with Modiji. Recently, I
chaired a meeting and a
party worker asked me if I
remembered the ‘Baithak’
that Modiji chaired and I
said I do remember.
z So the election is being
contested on PM Modi’s
face?
Modiji is the biggest per-
sonality in not just the
party but the entire nation,
and he has also established
himself across the world
and it is our good fortune
that he is a soldier of BJP.
So, if any elections are to
happen, it is obvious that
he too would be a part of it.
And even you know that
the amount of interest he
takes in administrating
and running the govern-
ment, he takes a similar
interest in the organisation
as well. He also makes all
effort to take the organisa-
tional work forward. And
hence, when elections
occur, he carried out
the work required
of him in the best
manner possi-
ble and as a
result, the
party gets
strength-
ened.
z There was a time when
he was addressed as
‘Pracharak Se PM’ and
now we have seen a dif-
ferent spiritual side of
him and now people say
that he has transformed
from ‘PM to Adhyatm-
Guru.’ This is a new
side of his that has come
fore, which has become
extremely popular. What
do you think about this?
Well, he has been spiritual-
ly inclined since the very
beginning. Although, he
does not talk much about
his spiritual journey
, but a
little that we have come
across, we know how he left
homeandrightfromKedar-
nath to many other spiritu-
al centres that he visited
and came in contact with
several spiritual gurus and
masters.AndthensomeGu-
ruji told him that he should
not go towards ‘Sanyas’ but
should work for the society
and that would be your ‘Ta-
pasya.’ So after this, he
came back and became a
‘Pracharak,’ where he
worked and was handed the
political life and quickly
took the work forward. So,
spirituality is deeply in-
grained in him. Now, that
today he is working as
Prime Minister, what we
callasculturalnationalism,
he also tries to put this as-
pect before everyone in a
proper manner. Over some
time, what happened in our
country was that the defini-
tion of secularism was at-
tributed to
the gov-
ernment
not sav-
ing or
s a f e -
guarding
the nation’s
inherent cul-
ture.Butitisnot
so.Itisthegovern-
ment’s job to save
the culture and
to carry it for-
ward. So, to en-
hance the facili-
ties of spiritual
and religious cen-
tres since lakhs
of people visit
these places, Modiji has an
immense interest in this.
So, perhaps people may
have seen a ‘Dharma-Guru’
in him, but in reality
, he has
worked as a ‘Tapasvi’, even
though he is in politics.
z Amit Shah also came
and conducted rallies.
How was the response?
The response has been
great. It has been akin to an
electrifying effect.
z How do you rate
Jairam Thakur as a
Chief Minister?
Jairam Thakur ji is a si-
lent and down-to-earth
worker, and he is an incre-
mentor. He is also success-
ful in implementing ideas
and policies. There is no
two ways about it and eve-
ryone accepts that
Himachal Pradesh can not
work without the Centre’s
blessings. And there is
more than enough bless-
ings of Modiji, and to
bring that down on the
ground, in letter and spir-
it, Jairam Thakur has
played a huge role. Take
the vaccination drive for
example. Over 2,00 crore
doses were administered
across the nation, but first
in administering the first
and second doses as well
has been Himachal. So,
that was implemented by
Jairam Thakur. And I be-
lieve that there is a mas-
sive difference between
implementing this in say
Delhi or any state in the
plains and doing so in the
hills. Just imagine the re-
gions like Lahaul-Spiti,
Malana, Chota Bangal and
such places, where you
may feel like you are in a
different world and taking
the vaccine to the people in
these regions, and ensur-
ing that the optimum tem-
perature required for the
vaccines is also main-
tained, Jairam Thakur has
made Himachal ‘Numero-
Uno’ in this work. So, this
is his silent-worker’ image.
And the people of
Himachal praise a leader,
who works silently, does
not indulge in vengeance
politics and works for the
people.
z There is another
young and upcoming
leader in BJP- Anurag
Thakur...
Anurag Thakur is a young
and energetic leader. He
has been given an impor-
tant responsibility and he
is fulfilling that as IB
Minister and even in the
election too. And handling
the IB Ministry, is a full-
time work since news nev-
er stops, so he too has to
work round the clock along
with that he is the Sports
Minister too and that ac-
tivity also he is handling.
So, he has been given this
responsibility at a young
age and this has become
possible only because of
Modiji’s leadership.
z So Jairam Thakur
and Anurag Thakur,
which Thakur would be
given the reins?
See we are contesting the
election under Jairam
Thakur’s leadership and
the final call is taken by the
Parliamentary Board. But
yes, we are going ahead in
the state keeping Jairam
Thakur as the leader.
