Public Relations in Strategic Management and
Strategic Management of Public Relations: theory and evidence from the IABC Excellence project
JAMES E. GRUNIG AND LARISSAA. GRUNIG
University of Maryland, USA
ABSTRACT This article establishes the case for public relations as a critical component of an
organization s strategic management processes and of the subsequent strategic management of public
relations in an effective organization. The article begins with an elaboration of a theory of the value of
strategic management in public relations. Qualitative and quantitative results of the

Thus, we added what we called the excellence question: how must public relations be practiced and
the communication function organized for it to contribute the most to organizational effectiveness?
The theoretical answers that we developed to these two research questions as well as our empirical
con rmation of the theory show the importance of an organization viewing public relations as a critical
component of its strategic management processes and of the subsequent strategic management of
public relations. The results of our research further con rm the importance of strategic public relations
in effective organizations: involvement of public relations in strategic management consistently was
the best predictor of excellent public relations.

leads directly to two of the characteristics of excellent departments: public relations is involved in
organizational strategic management, and public relations is managed strategically. The second section
of the article presents our theory of public relations and strategic management. Finally, the third
section presents results from our research that con rm the importance of strategic public relations in
making organizations more effective.

Shipler s The Working Poor
In The United States, two in five children receive food stamps reported the Census Bureau. Poverty
affects people uniquely. Mothers naturally do everything in their control to shelter their young from
hardships in life. Two moms, from the book The Working Poor written by David K Shipler chose
diverse approaches to deal with the economic struggles that burdened their family. The women are
similar; they are poor in life, yet unique in how they dealt with being indigent. Kara worked, accepted
welfare, but considered acts of charity as pity. Ann chose part time jobs to maintain closeness to her

A Nation for Change
No one person wakes in the morning and decides to tackle years of institutional rule without thinking
certain doom, discomfort, or in some cases, death. Citizens living during the times within the United
States (1775 1784) and Vietnam (1955 1975) decided to fight as one voice, for a cause they believed
and shared together. This unified voice, the will of the people, started as a single voice. Soon there
were many voices with the same cry, to push out policies, ideals, and laws that were not their own.
Peaceful talks, debates, or discussions did not work, soon there was no other means but the violence to
break the will to continue.
The revolutionary wars were the violent means to which tactics used, was used as a form of warfare
[that is] uniquely adapted to undermine the efforts of new and poor countries to maintain the freedom
that they have finally achieved . President Kennedy spoke those words in 1962, the height of the
Vietnam War, and reaffirms the will of the people to that of the American people during its
Revolutionary War; the will for independence prevailed during trying times of offensive and defensive
phases of war.

Courts Essay
The jurisdiction of the federal courts is defined in Article III, Section 2, of the Constitution, as
extending in law and equity to all cases arising under the Constitution and federal legislation; to
controversies to which the U.S. shall be a party, including those arising from treaties with other
governments; to admiralty and maritime cases; to controversies between states; to controversies
between a state, or its citizens, and foreign governments or their subjects; and to controversies
between the citizens of one state and citizens of another state. The federal courts were also originally

Other federal courts, established by Congress under powers held to be implied in other articles of the
Constitution, are called legislative courts. These are the Claims Court, the Court of International
Trade, the Tax Court, and the territorial courts established in the federally administered territories of
the U.S. The special jurisdictions of these courts are defined by the U.S. Congress. Except in the case
of the territorial courts, which are courts of general jurisdiction, the special jurisdictions of these
courts are suggested by their titles.
State Courts
Each state has an independent system of courts operating under the constitution and laws of the state.
Broadly speaking, the state courts are based on the English judicial system as it existed in colonial
times, but as modified by statutory enactment s; the character and names of the courts differ from state
to state. The state courts as a whole have general jurisdiction, except in cases in which exclusive
jurisdiction has been vested in the federal courts. In cases involving the federal Constitution or federal
laws or treaties, the state courts are governed by the decisions of the Supreme Court and their
decisions are subject to review

Emperor And Nationalist Ideology Essay
The Emperor and Nationalist Ideology in Meiji Era Japan
The Meiji Era in Japan is known as a time of rapid industrialization and Westernization where many
institutions of society were realigned in one form or another to be consistent with their Western
counterparts. Ironically, at the same time, it was a period of growing nationalistic feelings that began
to develop in Japanese society. However, besides being a reactionary or nostalgic feeling experienced
by the population, this nationalist ideology was also actively promoted by the Meiji leadership.
Central to this ideology was the emperor who was effectively and successfully used as a tool for
legitimizing the Meiji government.

Comparing Angela s Ashes And Huckleberry Finn
The importance of community and the charity of strangers is very prominent in Angela s Ashes and
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The way that strangers treat them compared to how their own
families act is a large difference. Strangers tend to be more charitable and kind, but their families don t
seem to care as much about them. The way their families treat them in both stories is negative. In
Angela s Ashes Malachy and Angela are distant parents. Malachy drinks and doesn t bring money
home. In Frank s teenage years his father leaves for London one day and never comes back. When
Frank s little siblings die his mother closes herself off and refuses to eat or drink or even get out of
bed. Even Frank s grandparents, aunts and uncles treat him and his siblings poorly. They are viewed as
outsiders on his mother s side for being from the north and on his father s side for being from the
south. Frank and his siblings are seen as outsiders in even their own families because of who they are.

Globalizatons and Cherokees
Globalization has caused extreme change on the Cherokee ways of life, institutions, customs and
traditions. The Cherokee people are incorporating more and more of their past traditions in to their
institutions way of life in a means of trying to preserve them in this every changing world. Once a
culture of people that held high their beliefs and way of life was nearly an extinct culture after the
European, and colonization forced these people out of their land. It is important to see look at the
affects that globalization has on the Cherokee people because looking at this we can see how
globalization affects human dignity both in a positive manner and in a negative manner.
The education institutions that are on the boundary give the Cherokee children the right to self
fulfillment; it does this by providing them with the right education to go to college or so on if they
wish. The school has incorporated ideas from all over to make sure that their children have the best
possible education that they can get to survive and thrive in the modern world today. Our culture has
played a huge impact on how they view technology. Our culture is constantly obsessing over the
newest and greatest technology, because of this there are tons of jobs in this field. The Cherokee
schools teach children as early as elementary school how to work with different technology to give
them a head start in the culture that surrounds them so that they can keep at a solid pace with us.

The League of Nations Was a Great Source for Peace in the...
The League Of Nations Was A Great Force For Peace In The 1920 s In this essay, I am going to look
at the successes and failures of the League of Nations (LofN) in its struggle for peace throughout the
1920 s. The LofN was the brain child of American president Woodrow Wilson. The four other main
powers (Britain, France, Japan and Italy) joined along with approximately 60 other countries from
around the world. The U.S.A then abandoned its child as to social and economic unrest led to a more
isolationist foreign policy. Yet the other four main countries continued to support the LofN and formed
the council, consisting to the most powerful countries . The LofN was set up to enforce peace in
Europe and the world. It created various ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also helped Germany pay their reparations. This, in the long term, would have prevented war. Yet as
the American stock market crashed, it could no longer lend nearly as much, grounding the whole plan
to a halt. This sent many other countries such as Japan into a deep depression. The League failed when
attempting at worldwide disarmament. This barely even got started as the Big 4 only reduced their
armed forces by a miniscule amount before worrying about self defence. Britain s excuse was it had to
protect other weaker nations. Only the Germans ended up disarming. This did not go down well, as
these few selfish nations had put their own interests ahead of world peace, which was supposed to be
their mission and purpose. The League lost respect for this, but this is their only large failure in the
department of agreements and treaties. Finally, the League worked for a better world. The LofN had
itself a wider task than simply waiting for disputes to arise and hoping to solve them. Through its
commissions and committees, the LofN aimed to fight poverty, disease and injustice all over the
globe. The ILO (International Labour Organization) was successful in banning poisonous white lead
from paint, which prevented many deaths, and also limited the hours that small children were allowed
to work. They introduced a 48 hour week, and an 8 hour day. Yet only a few members used this as

Hot Nigga Meaning
About a week ago! my cousins screamed in unison with enthusiasm. I peeked over my current book,
The Secret, and stared at them, partly puzzled, partly annoyed. What s that about? I enquired after
hearing the phrase for the fourth time that day. After finding amusement in my lack of awareness of
the phrase and its origin, my cousins took pity on me and explained. They played the hip hop song Hot
Nigga, then proceeded to show me the weird dance move that accompanied it, called the Shmoney
Dance, where they bent one leg at a time, in sync with lowered arms and their fists clenched. But
why? I had asked. My cousins then told me of the popularity of the phrase, and its overall coolness.
They played the song for me and as I paid attention to the lyrics, I noted its constant mention of
violence and I wondered if they did as well. While I initially found the lyrics of the song Hot Nigga
disturbing, very quickly I realized that although my cousins proclaimed their love for this cool song
and repeated the phrase About a week ago with reckless abandonment, they seemed to lack awareness
of the rest of the lyrics. This became evident when I asked them to sing it, and the only coherent
words they could repeat were those of the phrase About a week ago. Little do they know that Bobby
Shmurda, whose real name is Ackquille Pollard, in an interview claimed that the song Hot Nigga was
based on his life story. He later retracted this statement when referencing the phrase

An Occurrence At Owl s Creek Analysis
According to Henry James, the ability to successfully compose a fictional story is in knowing the
difference between imagination and reality. This ability as conveyed by James is a gift given to us by
nature for simply being human. Our life experiences equip us with the ability to effortlessly discern
the unseen (our imaginations) from the seen (reality).
Using James perspective, one can easily understand why two different stories can have the same
realistic feel and or convey the same hidden meaning. The story Desiree s baby by Kate Chopin and
the story An occurrence at Owl s creek by Ambrose Bierce is a perfect example of this. Because as
suggested by James, human s way of life and the environment where they live can influence ... Show

The reader s brain quickly responds to the author s depictions of smells and textures and movements
and perceives them as if they were the real thing. But this is only possible if the reader had encounter
or had knowledge of the things being describe by the author. For example if an author wrote Dave
took one of the lemons Cathy left in the bowl. He grabbed one of the kitchen knives, cut through the
bright yellow skin, revealing the luminous fruit inside. He tilted his head back, mouth wide open,
holds the peeled lemon up; squeeze it, allowing a few drops of the juice onto his tongue. The
immediate reaction of anyone who s ever tasted a lemon before will be to pucker their lip as if tasting
the real lemon. Also the reader will also quickly visualize the character Dave, taking the lemon from
the bowl, grabbing the knife and the other things he did till the lemon juice reached his mouth. A
person who s never had lemon before however might be able to visualize all the things described
except for the taste of the lemon when it reached the character s mouth. So as James said the condition

Persuasive Essay On Winning The Lottery
Is winning a fortune really worth the possibility of losing everything? There are many different forms
of the lottery with prizes ranging from a couple of dollars to millions of dollars. Most people though
are more interested in the big prize worth millions, believing that if they were to win they would be set
for life. While winning the lottery can improve someone s life it can just as equally ruin their life.
After winning the lottery they need to be smart with their money. Within the first five years of winning
the lottery around 70% of the winners will file for bankruptcy, according to the National Endowment
for Financial Education. When people strike it rich they believe that they have all the money in the
world and begin to spend or give away money without a second thought They feel the need to have the
newest and best of everything to match their newfound social class. Kevin Myeroff, a certified
financial planner and CEO of NCA Financial in Mayfield Heights, says that winners spend too much
on depreciating assets such as cars, vacations and gifts. When winners begin to gain popularity it
attracts the attention of people who want to leech off the benefits of the winner. Once they begin to
give away money to family and friends it is hard for them to stop. Sandra Hayes, one of the twelve
winners of the Missouri lottery in 2006 worth a total of $224 million began to feel the emotional toll
of winning the lottery. After splitting the $224 million among a dozen of her

Creation Of The Sistine Chapel s Accomplishments
In 1508, Pope Julius II wanted a geometric ornament and the placement of twelve Disciples in
spandrels (spaces between two arches) around the decoration to cover up the original blue ceiling
covered in stars. The task was asked to thirty three year old sculptor, Michelangelo, who although at
the time did not want to paint the ceiling, proposed the idea of old testament stories along the ceiling.
The first stories showcased are The Creation of the Heavens and Earth, The Creation of Adam and
Eve, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and the story of Noah and the Great Flood. When the
painting was first begun, the painting, The Deluge, showed multiple figures that were small in size

1979, a chemical compound, AB 57, was tested on the East Wall. AB 57 is a calcium dissolving

Following that it would dry for twenty four hours, and this application process would be repeated
again. Another chemical called B 72 was also used to seal the walls lunettes (Ancestors of Christ), but
this process was quickly thrown out. As a way to ensure that the restoration would remain the way it
is, an intricate climate control system was designed to protect the frescos from air pollution, heat, and

The Good Life Montaigne Analysis
The good life is one of stability and the failure to be affected by forces and circumstances beyond the
control of the individual. This has been clearly stated beginning with Socrates, stating how each life
should be lived with self purpose: no outside influences. The artificial goods represent that of wealth,
status, and political power, whereas what an individual should cherish is their own personal beliefs
and convictions. All items that society has taught a person to hold and respect create more damage and
disruption than they benefit as they can easily be taken from oneself. A fortune can be lost, the
President will run out of terms, but the moral holding of each person is something that cannot be lost
or stripped by a force outside ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, stating that a human has desire not only to attain a flourishing life, but also to appreciate what
surrounds them daily. He believes that every person has the craving for knowledge, but that each can
only learn a limited amount about Nature and how it operates. Montaigne later says, In her [Nature]
promises and threats there is great uncertainty, variability and obscurity, (Montaigne 1243).
Knowledge is so limited to each individual because Nature is constantly changing; changing what it
has to offer at any given time. It is not right or fair to live a life in which no material items are
cherished or respected. It is necessary to acknowledge that objects such as wealth, power, and social
status allow for a more comfortable life. However, like Boethius, Montaigne also accepts that these
material possessions are only temporary and will not be with the one forever. That is why they need to
be recognized while such Fortunes exist, but one should not allow oneself to become attached or
dependent upon such items. He contradicts Plato s platform stating, I hate being told to have our
minds above the clouds while our bodies are at the dinner table, (Montaigne 1257 1258). Plato, like
Socrates, believes in only focusing on what cannot be taken from an individual. Montaigne is
beginning to break free of the mold previously set by other philosophers and does not accept their way
of thinking. Although he does believe that societies goods should not take over one s life it is crucial
to accept them to live the good life. Montaigne believes that all things in life were placed by Nature
gives all that is needed. Therefore, to ignore temporary material possessions is nothing more than to
break Nature s laws. (Montaigne

Michelle Obama Food Fail Essay
Michelle Obama s Food Fail Michelle Obama is pushing her way for a healthier nation, taking down
any obstacles she might encounter. The big question is; Is her plan going to backfire? This anti obesity
campaign has caused many student across the country to just stop eating school lunches. First Lady
Michelle has cut and restricted so many things in the food requirements making it next to impossible
for the schools to keep up. The requirements have been so strict that schools have to buy cheaper food
to compensate for the nutritional value. She has been leading this for several years now and has
planned on implementing even more restrictions in the future. Obesity in children is a growing
problem across America and that is a well known fact. This is because of how easy we have access to
unhealthy, greasy, fatty foods. Not always is it the children s fault that this is the food they eat, often
times the parents are either too busy or to lazy to actually cook. Again that just goes along with saying
how easy and fast it is to get ahold of this food. Yes, obesity is a problem that needs to be fixed and I
believe she has all the right intentions, she just seems to be going about it in all the wrong ways. More

wrote that he had kept a mould for making maccaroni in Naples and had sent it to his mentor in Paris.
However, it s most likely that the macaroni machine didn t reach France until after Jefferson had left.
In the words of Jefferson, this is how much he loved his macaronni machine: The best maccaroni in
Italy is made with a particular sort of flour called Semola, in Naples: but in almost every shop a
different sort of flour is commonly used; for, provided the flour be of a good quality, and not ground
extremely fine, it will always do very well. A paste is made with flour, water and less yeast than is
used for making bread. This paste is then put, by little at a time, viz. about 5. or 6. lb. each time into a
round iron box ABC, the under part of which is perforated with holes, through which the paste, when
pressed by the screw DEF, comes out, and forms the Maccaroni g.g.g. which, when sufficiently long,

A Study On Old Maria Luisa Nava
Brianna Nava

AP English Literature
April 3, 2015
Flee It was 18 years ago on October 28, 1996 at Dallas Presbyterian Hospital, Texas, where 22 year
old Maria Luisa Nava was as she was as she was almost 40 weeks pregnant and about to give birth to
her soon to be daughter. Maria Luisa is a small and reserved young woman. She is fairly the typical
Mexican woman that is apart of the thousands of illegal immigrants who are crossing the border
frequently to give birth to their babies in the United States of America. Maria Luisa had bigger things
in mind for her baby girl rather than living in a city where poverty is a major subject of matter.
Numerous days prior to her being at Dallas Presbyterian Hospital, Maria Luisa was in her hometown,
Jaripo, Michoacán. It was a Sunday afternoon and Maria Luisa had just turned off the stove, where she
had just finished cooking the popular Mexican soup, menudo (as it is apart of the Mexican tradition to
cook and eat on Sundays). Her little brothers, Hector and Noe, had just turned on the 5 o clock news.
As Maria Luisa was pouring soup into 4 bowls for her mother, little brothers, and for herself, she
overheard that there is a rising problem occurring in the United States where pregnant mothers
(mainly) from Mexico and Canada, cross the border hoping to give birth in the United States, so their
newborn will be born an American citizen. Seconds later, Maria Luisa took this risky opportunity into
consideration, she then

The Role Of Dna Analyst On The Rights Of The Defendant
The goals of science are to make sure that the goods and services they provide are of value to the
community, enhance knowledge, discredit false information or beliefs, and most importantly to keep a
record through documentation so that others can benefit from the knowledge obtained as well (1).
The role of the DNA analyst is also, in part, to protect the rights of the defendant. The DNA analyst
contributes to the trial process in that their job is to analyze evidence, according to set guidelines and
procedures can sway jurors or a judge. The results from the analyst s analysis can be entered into the
court in compliance with the defendant s right to view the evidence, a process called discovery. When
they testify, they are in compliance with the defendant s right to confront their accusers. The right to a
fair trial conducted in a competent manner, right to be present at trial, right to an impartial jury, and
right to be heard in one s own defense is a part of the defendant s right to due process.
Discovery is as defined in Butler 2012 is the legal process whereby information and materials relating
to the prosecution of a defendant in an upcoming trial are shared between the prosecution team, for
instance, law enforcement, crime laboratory, prosecuting attorney, and the defense counsel (1). The
guidelines of discovery are outlined by the laws of the federal and state governments. The prosecution
must share every element of their case against the defendant with the

Stages of Group Development
The Forming Storming Norming Performing is a model of group development, first proposed by
Bruce Tuckman in 1965, who maintained that these phases are all necessary and inevitable in order for
the team to grow, to face up to challenges, to tackle problems, to find solutions, to plan work, and to
deliver results. Forming In the first stages of team building, the forming of the team takes place. The
individual s behavior is driven by a desire to be accepted by the others, and avoid controversy or
conflict. Serious issues and feelings are avoided, and people focus on being busy with routines, such
as team organization, who does what, when to meet, etc. But individuals are also gathering
information and impressions about each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Group members establish implicit or explicit rules about how they will achieve their goal. They
address the types of communication that will or will not help with the task. Indicators include:
Questioning performance, Reviewing/clarify objective, Changing/confirming roles, Opening risky
issues, Assertiveness, Listening, Testing new ground, Identifying strengths and weaknesses.
Performing Some teams will reach the performing stage. These high performing teams are able to
function as a unit as they find ways to get the job done smoothly and effectively without inappropriate
conflict or the need for external supervision. Team members have become interdependent. By this
time they are motivated and knowledgeable. The team members are now competent, autonomous and
able to handle the decision making process without supervision. Dissent is expected and allowed as
long as it is channeled through means acceptable to the team. Supervisors of the team during this
phase are almost always participative. The team will make most of the necessary decisions. Even the
most high performing teams will revert to earlier stages in certain circumstances. Many long standing
teams will go through these cycles many times as they react to changing circumstances. For example,
a change in leadership may cause the team to revert to storming as the new people challenge the

Models For Diffusion Of Innovations Among Potential Adopters
Models for diffusion of innovations among potential adopters have been recently used to study the life
cycle of new products and to forecast first purchase sales. Those models are useful for managers as
decision aids to create and perform strategies to maintain the profitability of new products across their
life cycle. Bass (1969) pioneered this area of research with a model for diffusions of new products
under peer pressure via word of mouth. This model distinguished two parameters: innovation and
imitation. Later, Chatterjee and Eliashberg (1990) provided a microeconomic version of Bass s model
that included interactions among potential adopters and the formation of beliefs.
In Chatterjee and Eliashberg s model, potential adopters were risk averse and used the price and their
perceptions about the innovation s performance as inputs for utility functions. Thus, with Bayesian
methods, potential adopters updated parameters with information from past adopters. Our model also
focuses on informational influence on adoption of new products. However, we modified Chatterjee
and Eliashberg s model of beliefs formation and individual choice by taking into account the
possibility that influences take place only among consumers who are connected in a social network.
The objective of this article is twofold. First, we seek to determine how global parameters of the social
network, such as average path length and clustering, affect diffusion processes. Second, we attempt to
identify early

Affluent children are usually considered to be at low risk. However, in recent news 16 year old, Ethan

America Should Not Be Allowed Since World War I
As Peter Schmidt of the chronicle says, legacies originated after World War I to support the immigrant
students, particularly Jews. When it became harder to control Jewish enrollment, in 1920 s most
respected universities such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton considered legacy status. Since then it has
raised the concerns for lower class families who did not attend good universities and their children
wanted to attend but ended up not getting admission. In 2003, Senator Edward Kennedy sought
legislation to compel colleges to make public their data on legacy admissions. It didn t pass due to
higher education s powerful lobbying. Legacy admission should not be allowed since it promotes

It shows how ivy colleges prefer legacy admissions. Although it is not illegal, but recently two legal
theories are offered under which legacy preferences could be challenged at both public and private
institutions under the Fourteenth Amendment s Equal Protection Clause (Ladeswki 578). The civil act
of 1866 prevents the states from giving titles of nobility. Minorities since most of elite university s
alumni belong to upper class families. Americans are concerned about such type of practices as it
creates doubt about institution s commitment to meritocracy and equal opportunity (Mullen 47). On
the contrary, three out of four Americans oppose ancestry based discrimination so they can create
equal opportunities for lower class families to get into elite colleges. According to Mullen research
shows that a candidate has a 30% chance of admission, an applicant with the exact same academic
record and extracurricular activities, but also a parent who attended the school as an undergraduate
would have 75% chance. This shows that due to legacy admission, there s less academic competition.
Moreover, many colleges claim that legacy status is just use as a tie breaker in a very close admission
call. However, according to the book affirmative action for the rich informs that the weight of legacy
preference is noteworthy, adding 160 points to candidate s record. Samuel G. Freedman states that

The Legacy Of John Adams
John Adams was many things in his long and illustrious career. He was a lawyer, diplomat, farmer,
Vice President and President. He is most well known for being the second president. He did some
good things and some bad things. Although the four years of John Adams presidency were quiet and
somewhat forgotten, his successes in foreign policy and his control no doubt outweighed his failures
in the Sedition Act and with his cabinet, in part to his background and characteristics. John Adam s
greatest presidential accomplishment or success was his dealings with France in 1798. This incident is
better known as the infamous Quasi War . The Quasi War was a dispute between the United States and
France mainly fought over sea with each countries navies. It started with the United States refusing to
continue to repay the money that was owed to from a loan from France to help them in war. The
United States refused to pay because the money owed to the previous government, as similar to the

Since France had a new government, the United States felt no need to pay off old debt to the French

Essay Comparing A Clockwork Orange And American Psycho
Point #1
In both novels American Psycho and A Clockwork Orange, society creates monsters by manipulating
and taking away free will from the protagonists Patrick Bateman and Alex. This may be in different
ways but essentially both are separated away from what seems to be the norm and are mentally
segregated from human connection.
One way in which this can be seen in American Psycho is by isolating Patrick Bateman, a high class,
wealthy Manhattan businessman, from the ordinary. There are several repeated miscommunications
such as when Bateman is constantly telling his friends that he works in murders and executions but
this is interpreted as mergers and acquisitions . Ironically combining together Bateman s monotonous
day job with his vicious night job. They are all so wrapped up in themselves that they don t hear him
or don t believe what he s saying.
In fact, what could really be going on in his head, Patrick Bateman might be trying to communicate
across how he feels and this may be his way of doing so. However, everybody around him doesn t
seem to understand what is really going on. Not one character from American Psycho can see beneath

The Advantiveness Of Liberal Arts Education
The liberal arts refers to a wide variety of academic subjects such as english, math, philosophy, and
social and physical sciences included in all college curriculums. The usefulness of a liberal arts
education has been widely debated recently on its viability and effectiveness in preparing students for
accessible occupations and societal settings. Many feel a liberal arts education is a perfect way to hone
someone s skills in communication, critical thinking, and writing. Supporters of a liberal arts
education find it more important to learn how to think rather than focus on a narrower education that
trains for a specific skill or position. While others disagree with the general merits the liberal arts
provide; rendering them inconsequential and inefficient as there is no specialized skill being learned.
While it is true that the liberal arts does not teach one specific specialized skill, it cannot be denied
that it does teach incalculable skills such as effective communication, analytical and critical thinking,
and problem solving that is instrumental to being a well rounded, successful individual regardless of a
person s chosen career path.
A liberal arts education is multifaceted, as a result, it serves two main purposes: it gives students a
wide range of options and opportunities to take courses from varying subject areas and it provides the
core skills that many employers find valuable. I feel it allows students to acquire the fundamental,
intellectual tools that

ten times longer than other bulbs. Make sure you turn off lights when leaving a room. To cut energy
on heating, residents can close curtains, lower thermostats, and seal out drafts. Some ways to conserve
in the kitchen is to use adequate size pots and pans and turn down the flame if it is visible. Try not to
preheat and use microwaves when feasible. If you have older appliances, replace them with newer,
energy efficient appliances. Hang dry clothes when the weather permits. Other areas that you can
improve energy consumption in are by lowering air conditioner temperatures. If you plant trees
outside your home, it will create shade, making the temperature in your house cooler. I would end this

Analysis Of The Poem I Am Struck By The Irony Between...
At one hundred years young, my grandmother passed away. As the matriarch of our family, we felt
both saddened and relieved to see her go. She was an independent, educated, hardworking woman
who cherished her family and friends. Stories she shared about her youth and her numerous life
experiences supported me and guided me. Much of my personal identity formed in connection to her.
My grandmother s landscape, traditions, and identity lives on through me and my family. We, as
people, construct identities to both give life meaning and to make meaning of life.
Momaday makes meaning of his life and culture through the unique textual structure of The Way to
Rainy Mountain. While reading, I almost felt as if I was reading poetry versus a novel. The inclusion
of mythology makes the reading have a poetic tone. Within this beautifully constructed piece of
literature, I am struck by the irony between Momaday s connection to his grandmother and the Kiowa
treatment of women.
In the introduction to Momaday s piece of literature, he reveals a deep connection and reverence for
his grandmother, Aho. Momaday values her life and her memories because they give his life meaning
and help him construct his personal identity. He clearly expounded how, the immense landscape of the
continental interior [of Rainy Mountain] lay like a memory in her blood...[Momaday] wanted to see in
reality what she had seen more perfectly in the mind s eye (Momaday, 1969, p. 7). At this point, he is

Dr Strangelove Essay
Stanley Kubrick s sexual parody, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the
Bomb, illustrates an unfathomed nuclear catastrophe. Released in the midst of the Cold War, this 1964
film satirizes the heightened tensions between America and Russia. Many sexual insinuations are
implemented to ridicule the serious issue of a global nuclear holocaust, in an effort to countervail the
terror that plagued America at that time. Organizing principles, such as Kubrick s blunt political
attitudes about the absurdity of war and the satirical genre, are echoed by the film style of his anti war
black comedy, Dr. Strangelove. The black comedy follows the story of a paranoid U.S. Air Force
Commander, General Ripper, who irrationally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the beginning, the viewer is informed that the bombers have two hours before they attack, and
the almost continuous temporal relation between plot time and real time evokes suspense. For
instance, in the War Room , the large map of Russia that displays the progress of the planes towards
their targets coincides with actual screen time, creating increased anticipation and consternation.
The majority of the film s sound is derived exclusively from diegetic speech and sound effects that
bolster its overall realism. However, the first instance of nondiegetic sound occurs in the opening
credits when a male narrator provides rudimentary background information on the Doomsday Device .
This voice over narration stimulates the suspense of the narrative while providing the spectator with
unrestricted information by revealing more insight than the characters know at this point. The ensuing
credits sequence incorporates the song Try a Little Tenderness which communicates the idea that men
should be tender with their women. The romantic song is cunningly integrated with the image of two
B 52 bombers connecting, as one refuels the other. The sequence is suggestive of romance and the
physical act of love. Following Dr. Strangelove s infamous speech at the conclusion of the film, a
montage of nuclear bombs detonating is shown with Vera Lynn s

Why Did The US Housing Market Collapse
Once the US housing market collapsed, it created a credit crisis and crunch in the wider financial
markets. Due to the complexity of CDOs many people had no idea how much they were really worth.
Many of the CDOS were worthless and it was almost impossible to find the value of them (7). This
led to a moral hazard problem whereby there was an overall caution of banks because many had no
idea if they were even bankrupt. Inevitably, the interbank lending system crumbled whereby some
banks stopped lending to each other and to corporations altogether or only lent with very high interest
rates. Many banks who relied on interbank lending for money were heavily affected by this including
Northern Rock. Inevitably, depositors of these banks become dubious of their banks financial situation
and were provoked into withdrawing their money. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Trinitarian Baptismal Formula
Baptism is introduced in the Gospels when John the Baptist begins his ministry as the forerunner of
Jesus Christ. John s baptism was a baptism of repentance for Jews; he preached a simple message to
the Jews that they were to repent of their sins in preparation for Kingdom of God and the coming of
the Messiah. In Matthew 3:13 17, Jesus comes down to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. After
being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and
he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the
heavens said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The Triune character and language raises a number of important questions. In what ways do the
baptized relate to the mystery of the Triune God? Does it mean that they somehow appropriate the
activities and energies of the Trinity? Do they bear the Triune name like a calling card or as a symbol
of allegiance? What does it mean to be baptized into one the name which is multiple? How does this
shape an understanding of the Christian life in the context of the church and the wider society? The
rite implicitly poses these questions and other like them.
Any claim we might make about naming God in baptism needs to be tested against the biblical and
historical witness to the meaning, purpose and form of the baptismal rite. We turn now to a review of
New Testament, early Christian, and subsequent historical perspectives.
Scripture is the indispensable source for our knowledge of faith, yet we do not read it in a
fundamentalist way. We realize that the authors of the New Testament books wrote at least two
decades after Jesus death and resurrection. These writings thus give us direct access to the faith of the
first Christian generations, and indirect access to the historical Jesus himself, but this recognition does
not diminish their significance. The New Testament documents are both human documents and God s
revelatory word to us. We come to discern the will of Christ through

instances of fluid and electrolyte irregularity s incorporate essential periphery vasculature forerunners.
The key structures included in a circumstance of hyponatremia incorporate vessels, channels,
interstitial fluid, and additionally the cells cytoplasm (Al Salman, Kemp, Randall, 2002 ).
Fluids within our bodies are fundamentally made out of water but also containing particles and diverse

Root Canal
Toothache and swelling are the two major complaints reported to the dentist. Also the carious pulpal
exposure, requiring endodontic intervention is one of the commonly encountered clinical situations.
Therefore, the key to success lies in alleviating these critical issues. Literature search reveals that up to
80% of patients with preoperative pain experience severe post operative pain as well.[1] Also studies
have confirmed that these patients have higher incidence of inter appointment flare up.[2 3] Over
instrumentation, extrusion of irrigant / medicament beyond apex, temporary or permanent restoration

The Rising Star Cave Essay
The Rising Star cave was pointed out to scientists by a group of spelunkers who squeezed through the
narrow opening and saw the multitude of bones around the underground chamber. The opening was so
narrow that few scientists could enter. Because of this, the cave was excavated by a team of six
women called the underground astronauts . They uncovered more than 1,500 fossils belonging to the
same species (Wilford 2015). The bones were distributed across nearly the entire chamber, including
side passages (Dirks et. al. 2015: 14). The remains make up at least 15 individuals of a wide span of
ages; almost every bone is represented more than once in the find. This allows researchers to study a
full population instead of studying individuals (Kepp 2015). Many of the hands, feet, wrists, and
ankles are nearly complete, though many of the longer bones are fragmented (Dirks et. al. 2015: 21). It
is the largest find of fossils in Africa to date. These fossils have been classified as part of a new
species of hominin, called Homo naledi because naledi means star in the Sotho language of the region
(Gibbons 2015). It also refers to the Dinaledi Chamber within the Rising Star cave (Berger et. al.
2015: 3). This makes Homo naledi the best known fossil species in the human genus (Bower 2016).
Homo naledi was originally believed to have evolved near the root of the Homo lineage, about 2.5 to
2.8 billion years ago. More recently, a group of scientists has estimated the date of the cave

Will Keith Kellogg s Life
Will Keith Kellogg come into the world on April 7,1860 in Battle Creek Michigan. John and Ann
Kellogg believed that hard work and being kind to people was the best way of life. When Willie was
old enough to walk, he helped his mother work in the garden and do the laundry. At the age of 7 Willie
started to work at his father s broom company in the afternoons and weekends. His parents thought
that with the money he earned Will should buy his own clothes. During the day he went to school.
Will was shy and did not have many friends. His teachers thought he was dumb but really he could not
see the blackboard because he needed glasses, which he later got when he was 13. His parents did not
care much about his grades as long as he was working hard and doing his best.
At the age of 13 Will was a tall skinny young man. He quit school and became a full time brooms
salesmen for his father s company. He enjoyed traveling by train and was fascinated by this new way
of traveling. In 1878, George King asked Will to come and work as a salesman for his broom company
in Dallas, Texas. Will was bored in Battle Creek and wanted adventure. So he took the job and moved
to Dallas, Texas. After a year, Will quit with Mr. King because he was a bad business owner and he
missed his girlfriend Ella Davis. That summer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The French Revolution And Neo Classical Era
Lumières
Show Title
The 18th century was a time for human knowledge to thrive, as well as the challenging of long held
dogmatic practices; this meant much change for both the commoner as well as the nobility. Lumières
is the title of our exhibition, which translates to Enlightenment in French, which we found to be most
appropriate for this era. This show title would instantly grab the audience s attention as it effectively
communicates the meaning behind the exhibit. The enlightenment was among many movements that
contributed to the progressiveness of the 1700 s during the French Revolution and Neo Classical era,
but none had nearly the impact that the Enlightenment era did for society in this time.
Exhibition Approach The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is not until the 1760 s that the stagnation of fashion and its evolutionary pace shifts from a
gradual change to rapid progression (Payne, Winakor Farell Beck, 1992).
Our goal is to study more specifically the Neoclassical era, because this period in France gave a newly
and creative sense of style in both the arts and architecture that was very similar to those in ancient
Rome and Greece (Craske, 1997). During this conflict it caused people to recognize social status and
freedom of dress. This revolt caused civilians mainly middle class to rebel for equality and freedom
among their society (Mezler, 1998). Furthermore, our group will analyze this decline of the pompous
nobility as France is experiencing the onset of a revolution. Following this shift is the ultimate demise
of formal aristocracy, the once cynosure of all eyes has met their fate at the guillotine. A guillotine,
meant to symbolize the Reign of Terror nearing the end of the eighteenth century would perhaps be a
fitting and symbolic final piece to the exhibition.
International Location In addition to Dallas, the exhibition will also be held in Versailles, France.
As stated in Blum s introduction for the book Illusion and Reality: Fashion in France 1700 1900
(Blum, 1986), Versailles was the epicenter for the majority of the 1700 s because of the large,
structured court Louis XIV had created here. Another reason to have the exhibit here would be

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Vegetables
(Best for small land holders)
The cultivation of vegetables out of their normal season under environment controlled conditions is
known as vegetable forcing. It falls under the category of Olericulture which is a branch of
Horticultural sciences. There are two major groups of vegetables, first one is summer vegetables and
second is winter vegetables which are grown in summer and winter respectively. The main component
of environment is temperature which is responsible for this classification. Second thing is frost
sensitiveness. All frost sensitive vegetables are classified in summer vegetables e.g. Cucumber,
Chillies, Cucurbits and Okra. These two components of environment are controlled with polythene
sheets by constructing tunnels with pipes of plastic or iron. Therefore vegetable forcing is also known
as Tunnel Farming .
In Pakistan mostly summer vegetables are cultivated in the tunnels like Tomato, Cucumber and
Chillies. But this technology can be extended to the cultivation of Melons, Water melons and other
horticultural products. In picture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its efficiency is about 80 90% which means that there is negligible water loss during cultivation which
ultimately reduces irrigation expenses. Secondly there is no water availability for weeds germination
because water is directly provided to root zone of all plants individually in very small drops, the soil
on the sides of plants will remain without water so the seeds of weeds cannot grow due to deficiency
of water. In this way labor cost reduces due to drip irrigation method. Thirdly the nutrient or fertilizer
application can be done easily and more efficiently by this method than the flooding method.
Fertilizers are mixed with irrigation water in the tank at controlling unit; it runs with water in the pipes
and reaches directly in root zone of plants equally. Here is a picture of drip irrigation

Why The Business Man Flew In Like A March Wind By William...
William did not like the ferries. He was doing well for himself in New York. He was making good
money. He was meeting important people. He was living like a king. He liked New York, just not the
ferry boats. Jack did not like New York at all. He said this town is a leech. It drains the blood from the
country. Whoever comes to it accepts a challenge to a duel. Jack is saying that it s a monster and a
fight for everything. People left the West to come to the city for wealth and opportunity. Jack went for
the art and William went for business, but I believe others may have left the west simply to see what
the big city is all about. The opponent is the city herself. She is tough and willing to fight anyone. It s
a continual battle to get anywhere or do anything. The battle is to decide whether you shall become a

The 1950 s Cartoon Version Of A Cinderella Story
Everyone has surely heard of some version of a Cinderella story. These stories may be somewhat
different, but overall, all of these stories tend to share certain themes. The themes are shared whether it
be the 1950 s cartoon version of Cinderella or one of the modern movies that shows a Cinderella story.
,A few of the main themes that are shared are love, good versus evil, and wealth. These themes are
present in all of the Cinderella stories and through these stories, the themes also show reality by
creating noticeable similarities in real life through the stories. The themes of love, good versus evil,
and wealth are exactly what they sound like. The theme, love, shows how one falls in love within the
story and that person being Cinderella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wealth is also a main theme in Cinderella stories; it shows how people do crazy things in order to
have money, nice things, and to be superficial. Most of the women at the ball are mainly there to
marry a Prince most likely so that they may become wealthy and have everything that they have ever
wanted in life. Sometimes this is similar in real life seeing as to how some women try to find rich men
and to marry them by love, but in actuality all they are after are the man s money. It shows also how
people do crazy things for wealth by how the step mother and step sisters react to sensing that
Cinderella would end up with the Prince. They tried to hurt her, physically, emotionally, and mentally.
They also lied and tried to trick people and it just goes to show how money changes people. In real
life, this theme compares to how wealth corrupts people; showing how with the more money people
receive, they usually become even more selfish, and continue to want more and more wealth. It shows
the superficial side of wealth as well seeing as to how within the Cinderella stories show how fake the
step sisters become when trying to manipulate the Prince. They are truly evil, yet make their selves
appear as nice just in order to receive what they want, which is wealth. This is also prevalent in today
s society, because everyday people can fake a smile, look fake, and completely change everything

Organizational Culture Of Home Depot
Bernard Marcus, the founders of Home Depot, developed a very informal and store oriented culture at
Home Depot.
An oganisation s culture can be perceived as its style, atmosphere and personality. For Home Depot, it
was all about entrepreneural high spiritdness which gave the members of the workforc the freedom to
decide what they preceived to be the best for the company.
The company s structure was said to be an inverted pyramid : the customers and store managers on the
top and the top management at the bottom. This showed how everyone s beleifs and opinions were
aligned towards customer satisfaction and extreme personal involvement with the customers and the
store.
Home depot had two set of beleifs : Firstly there are internal beliefs that include encouraging
innovation at all levels and allow managers to take decisions for their stores independently and
secondly there are external beliefs which focus on the fact that all actions should move ... Show more

All this also contributed to their informal culture.
The extra ordinary autonomy given to the store manager was one of the main reasons why employees
were so happy to associate with and believe in the company s culture.
One of the differentiating factors of Home Depot was that it incorporated within its members a major
aversion to any kind of beauracracy and hierarchy. It was a usual practice at the stores to ignore all
kind of paperwork that was sent to them by the headquarters. They undervalued such directives to the
extent that they would throw these papers in the waste basket or mark them with BS stamp and send it
back to the headquarters. They believed that all this was a waste of time of the managers and they had
more important things to address to at their stores, the most important of them being : satisfying the

Neorealism Movement In Cinema
Italian Neorealism, French New Wave Directors, and Dogme 95 filmmakers were three very important
movements in cinema. The first very movement was called neorealism which lasted from 1944 1952
and reacted to the dominant mode of Italian cinema which was based on a fascist regime but also dealt
with the socio economic conditions from post world war 2 in Italy. The second movement began
around 1958 and was called the French new wave directors and reacted against the industries lack of
quality and directors small participation in vision. In 1955 the third wave called Dogme 95 films
began and was a movement that was against the big budget Hollywood films and use of special
effects.
The origin of Italian Neorealism began after the fall of Mussolini s Fascist regime in 1943 and the end
of World War 2. Now being free from fascist censorship Italian directors were able to blend cinematic
realism with social and political problems facing Italy which would have never been allowed earlier.
The term neorealism was first used by film critic Antonio Pietrangeli towards Luchino Visconti s film
Ossessione. The French New Wave was started by five French film enthusiast: André Bazin, Jean Luc
Godard, Claude Chabrol, François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette who wrote and discuss cinema because
they lacked the money to create films themselves. They talked about how movies have become stale
due to the lack of innovation in the industry and decided to create their own original formats, such

Columbine Documentary Techniques
The Documentary Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore produced in 2002 focuses on American
gun culture and how impacting it is to not only America but also the world. Moore uses this
documentary as a ploy to persuade viewers of his viewpoint that gun laws should be outlawed in
America by using various techniques such as selection of detail, audio, visuals and facts and statistics.
. It was produced three years after the Columbine school shooting in 1999 and this adds to his
argument. Throughout the documentary different audio is used to appeal to the viewer s emotions in
order for them to be convinced of Moore s viewpoint. An example of this is the wonderful world
sequence which is a montage of horrifying pictures displayed with the positive and upbeat song What
a wonderful world being played in the background. This alone creates a deep irony in the audio and

this is the fact that the UN estimates 500,000 Iraqi children die from bombing and sanctions. This fact
itself is devastating and gets the viewer to think about how violent American culture is leading them to
side with Moore. In addition, it comes from a trusted source the UN adding to the viewer s trust of this
fact. To add, this gives the viewer the impression killing is a part of the us governments agenda thus
further detracting from the viewer s trust in them. The use of facts and statistics in this documentary

Citizens living during the times within the United States (1775 1784) and Vietnam (1955 1975) decided to fight as one voice, for a cause they believed and shared together. This unified voice, the will of the people, started as a single voice. Soon there were many voices with the same cry, to push out policies, ideals, and laws that were not their own. The League Of Nations Was A Great Force For Peace In The 1920 s In this essay, I am going to look at the successes and failures of the League of Nations (LofN) in its struggle for peace throughout the 1920 s. The LofN was the brain child of American president Woodrow Wilson. The four other main powers (Britain, France, Japan and Italy) joined along with approximately 60 other countries from around the world. The U.S.A then abandoned its child as to social and economic unrest led to a more isolationist foreign policy. Yet the other four main countries continued to support the LofN and formed the council, consisting to the most powerful countries . The LofN was set up to enforce peace in Europe and the world. Yet as the American stock market crashed, it could no longer lend nearly as much, grounding the whole plan to a halt. This sent many other countries such as Japan into a deep depression. The League failed when attempting at worldwide disarmament. This barely even got started as the Big 4 only reduced their armed forces by a miniscule amount before worrying about self defence. Britain s excuse was it had to protect other weaker nations. Only the Germans ended up disarming. This did not go down well, as these few selfish nations had put their own interests ahead of world peace, which was supposed to be their mission and purpose. The League lost respect for this, but this is their only large failure in the department of agreements and treaties. Finally, the League worked for a better world. The LofN had itself a wider task than simply waiting for disputes to arise and hoping to solve them. Through its commissions and committees, the LofN aimed to fight poverty, disease and injustice all over the globe. The ILO (International Labour Organization) was successful in banning poisonous white lead from paint, which prevented many deaths, and also limited the hours that small children were allowed to work. • 11. Hot Nigga Meaning About a week ago! my cousins screamed in unison with enthusiasm. I peeked over my current book, The Secret, and stared at them, partly puzzled, partly annoyed. What s that about? I enquired after hearing the phrase for the fourth time that day. After finding amusement in my lack of awareness of the phrase and its origin, my cousins took pity on me and explained. They played the hip hop song Hot Nigga, then proceeded to show me the weird dance move that accompanied it, called the Shmoney Dance, where they bent one leg at a time, in sync with lowered arms and their fists clenched. But why? I had asked. My cousins then told me of the popularity of the phrase, and its overall coolness. They played the song for me and as I paid attention to the lyrics, I noted its constant mention of violence and I wondered if they did as well. While I initially found the lyrics of the song Hot Nigga disturbing, very quickly I realized that although my cousins proclaimed their love for this cool song and repeated the phrase About a week ago with reckless abandonment, they seemed to lack awareness of the rest of the lyrics. This became evident when I asked them to sing it, and the only coherent words they could repeat were those of the phrase About a week ago. Little do they know that Bobby Shmurda, whose real name is Ackquille Pollard, in an interview claimed that the song Hot Nigga was based on his life story. He later retracted this statement when referencing the phrase ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. An Occurrence At Owl s Creek Analysis According to Henry James, the ability to successfully compose a fictional story is in knowing the difference between imagination and reality. This ability as conveyed by James is a gift given to us by nature for simply being human. Our life experiences equip us with the ability to effortlessly discern the unseen (our imaginations) from the seen (reality). Using James perspective, one can easily understand why two different stories can have the same realistic feel and or convey the same hidden meaning. The story Desiree s baby by Kate Chopin and the story An occurrence at Owl s creek by Ambrose Bierce is a perfect example of this. Because as suggested by James, human s way of life and the environment where they live can influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader s brain quickly responds to the author s depictions of smells and textures and movements and perceives them as if they were the real thing. But this is only possible if the reader had encounter or had knowledge of the things being describe by the author. For example if an author wrote Dave took one of the lemons Cathy left in the bowl. He grabbed one of the kitchen knives, cut through the bright yellow skin, revealing the luminous fruit inside. He tilted his head back, mouth wide open, holds the peeled lemon up; squeeze it, allowing a few drops of the juice onto his tongue. The immediate reaction of anyone who s ever tasted a lemon before will be to pucker their lip as if tasting the real lemon. Also the reader will also quickly visualize the character Dave, taking the lemon from the bowl, grabbing the knife and the other things he did till the lemon juice reached his mouth. A person who s never had lemon before however might be able to visualize all the things described except for the taste of the lemon when it reached the character s mouth. As stated in the journal article, not many studies have been done on the effects of a Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular health, other than a few dealing with a Mediterranean population, an older generation of subjects, and people with preexisting health conditions. • 14. Persuasive Essay On Winning The Lottery Is winning a fortune really worth the possibility of losing everything? There are many different forms of the lottery with prizes ranging from a couple of dollars to millions of dollars. Most people though are more interested in the big prize worth millions, believing that if they were to win they would be set for life. While winning the lottery can improve someone s life it can just as equally ruin their life. After winning the lottery they need to be smart with their money. Within the first five years of winning the lottery around 70% of the winners will file for bankruptcy, according to the National Endowment for Financial Education. When people strike it rich they believe that they have all the money in the world and begin to spend or give away money without a second thought They feel the need to have the newest and best of everything to match their newfound social class. Kevin Myeroff, a certified financial planner and CEO of NCA Financial in Mayfield Heights, says that winners spend too much on depreciating assets such as cars, vacations and gifts. When winners begin to gain popularity it attracts the attention of people who want to leech off the benefits of the winner. Once they begin to give away money to family and friends it is hard for them to stop. Sandra Hayes, one of the twelve winners of the Missouri lottery in 2006 worth a total of $224 million began to feel the emotional toll of winning the lottery. Creation Of The Sistine Chapel s Accomplishments In 1508, Pope Julius II wanted a geometric ornament and the placement of twelve Disciples in spandrels (spaces between two arches) around the decoration to cover up the original blue ceiling covered in stars. The task was asked to thirty three year old sculptor, Michelangelo, who although at the time did not want to paint the ceiling, proposed the idea of old testament stories along the ceiling. The first stories showcased are The Creation of the Heavens and Earth, The Creation of Adam and Eve, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and the story of Noah and the Great Flood. The longest restoration process to date was ran by a group of conservators including Gianluigi Colalucci, Maurizio Rossi, and Piergiogio Boretti. In 1979, a chemical compound, AB 57, was tested on the East Wall. AB 57 is a calcium dissolving solvent, a solution made up of ammonium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, desogen (anti fungal acid), and carboxyl methyl cellulose, which is then dissolved in water, developed by Professor Paulo and Laura Mora. It was made to remove insoluble salts and materials that had been incrusted into the paintings, and ended up being able to bring very bright colors into the painting. When the AB 57 was to be applied, it would have to sit for three minutes, and then taken off by washing it with water. Following that it would dry for twenty four hours, and this application process would be repeated again. • 16. The Good Life Montaigne Analysis The good life is one of stability and the failure to be affected by forces and circumstances beyond the control of the individual. This has been clearly stated beginning with Socrates, stating how each life should be lived with self purpose: no outside influences. The artificial goods represent that of wealth, status, and political power, whereas what an individual should cherish is their own personal beliefs and convictions. All items that society has taught a person to hold and respect create more damage and disruption than they benefit as they can easily be taken from oneself. A fortune can be lost, the President will run out of terms, but the moral holding of each person is something that cannot be lost or stripped by a force outside ... He believes that every person has the craving for knowledge, but that each can only learn a limited amount about Nature and how it operates. Montaigne later says, In her [Nature] promises and threats there is great uncertainty, variability and obscurity, (Montaigne 1243). Knowledge is so limited to each individual because Nature is constantly changing; changing what it has to offer at any given time. It is not right or fair to live a life in which no material items are cherished or respected. It is necessary to acknowledge that objects such as wealth, power, and social status allow for a more comfortable life. However, like Boethius, Montaigne also accepts that these material possessions are only temporary and will not be with the one forever. That is why they need to be recognized while such Fortunes exist, but one should not allow oneself to become attached or dependent upon such items. He contradicts Plato s platform stating, I hate being told to have our minds above the clouds while our bodies are at the dinner table, (Montaigne 1257 1258). Plato, like Socrates, believes in only focusing on what cannot be taken from an individual. Montaigne is beginning to break free of the mold previously set by other philosophers and does not accept their way of thinking. Although he does believe that societies goods should not take over one s life it is crucial to accept them to live the good life. Montaigne believes that all things in life were placed by Nature gives all that is needed. Therefore, to ignore temporary material possessions is nothing more than to break Nature s laws. Maria Luisa is a small and reserved young woman. She is fairly the typical Mexican woman that is apart of the thousands of illegal immigrants who are crossing the border frequently to give birth to their babies in the United States of America. • 24. Models For Diffusion Of Innovations Among Potential Adopters Models for diffusion of innovations among potential adopters have been recently used to study the life cycle of new products and to forecast first purchase sales. Those models are useful for managers as decision aids to create and perform strategies to maintain the profitability of new products across their life cycle. Bass (1969) pioneered this area of research with a model for diffusions of new products under peer pressure via word of mouth. This model distinguished two parameters: innovation and imitation. Later, Chatterjee and Eliashberg (1990) provided a microeconomic version of Bass s model that included interactions among potential adopters and the formation of beliefs. In Chatterjee and Eliashberg s model, potential adopters were risk averse and used the price and their perceptions about the innovation s performance as inputs for utility functions. Thus, with Bayesian methods, potential adopters updated parameters with information from past adopters. Our model also focuses on informational influence on adoption of new products. However, we modified Chatterjee and Eliashberg s model of beliefs formation and individual choice by taking into account the possibility that influences take place only among consumers who are connected in a social network. The objective of this article is twofold. First, we seek to determine how global parameters of the social network, such as average path length and clustering, affect diffusion processes. • 34. Analysis Of The Poem I Am Struck By The Irony Between... At one hundred years young, my grandmother passed away. As the matriarch of our family, we felt both saddened and relieved to see her go. She was an independent, educated, hardworking woman who cherished her family and friends. Stories she shared about her youth and her numerous life experiences supported me and guided me. Much of my personal identity formed in connection to her. My grandmother s landscape, traditions, and identity lives on through me and my family. We, as people, construct identities to both give life meaning and to make meaning of life. Momaday makes meaning of his life and culture through the unique textual structure of The Way to Rainy Mountain. While reading, I almost felt as if I was reading poetry versus a novel. The inclusion of mythology makes the reading have a poetic tone. Within this beautifully constructed piece of literature, I am struck by the irony between Momaday s connection to his grandmother and the Kiowa treatment of women. In the introduction to Momaday s piece of literature, he reveals a deep connection and reverence for his grandmother, Aho. Momaday values her life and her memories because they give his life meaning and help him construct his personal identity. He clearly expounded how, the immense landscape of the continental interior [of Rainy Mountain] lay like a memory in her blood...[Momaday] wanted to see in reality what she had seen more perfectly in the mind s eye (Momaday, 1969, p. 7). • 35. Dr Strangelove Essay Stanley Kubrick s sexual parody, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, illustrates an unfathomed nuclear catastrophe. Released in the midst of the Cold War, this 1964 film satirizes the heightened tensions between America and Russia. Many sexual insinuations are implemented to ridicule the serious issue of a global nuclear holocaust, in an effort to countervail the terror that plagued America at that time. Organizing principles, such as Kubrick s blunt political attitudes about the absurdity of war and the satirical genre, are echoed by the film style of his anti war black comedy, Dr. Strangelove. From the beginning, the viewer is informed that the bombers have two hours before they attack, and the almost continuous temporal relation between plot time and real time evokes suspense. For instance, in the War Room , the large map of Russia that displays the progress of the planes towards their targets coincides with actual screen time, creating increased anticipation and consternation. The majority of the film s sound is derived exclusively from diegetic speech and sound effects that bolster its overall realism. However, the first instance of nondiegetic sound occurs in the opening credits when a male narrator provides rudimentary background information on the Doomsday Device . This voice over narration stimulates the suspense of the narrative while providing the spectator with unrestricted information by revealing more insight than the characters know at this point. The ensuing credits sequence incorporates the song Try a Little Tenderness which communicates the idea that men should be tender with their women. The romantic song is cunningly integrated with the image of two B 52 bombers connecting, as one refuels the other. The sequence is suggestive of romance and the physical act of love. Due to the complexity of CDOs many people had no idea how much they were really worth. Many of the CDOS were worthless and it was almost impossible to find the value of them (7). • 38. Trinitarian Baptismal Formula Baptism is introduced in the Gospels when John the Baptist begins his ministry as the forerunner of Jesus Christ. John s baptism was a baptism of repentance for Jews; he preached a simple message to the Jews that they were to repent of their sins in preparation for Kingdom of God and the coming of the Messiah. In Matthew 3:13 17, Jesus comes down to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Does it mean that they somehow appropriate the activities and energies of the Trinity? Do they bear the Triune name like a calling card or as a symbol of allegiance? What does it mean to be baptized into one the name which is multiple? How does this shape an understanding of the Christian life in the context of the church and the wider society? The rite implicitly poses these questions and other like them. Any claim we might make about naming God in baptism needs to be tested against the biblical and historical witness to the meaning, purpose and form of the baptismal rite. Scripture is the indispensable source for our knowledge of faith, yet we do not read it in a fundamentalist way. We realize that the authors of the New Testament books wrote at least two decades after Jesus death and resurrection. These writings thus give us direct access to the faith of the first Christian generations, and indirect access to the historical Jesus himself, but this recognition does not diminish their significance. The Rising Star Cave Essay The Rising Star cave was pointed out to scientists by a group of spelunkers who squeezed through the narrow opening and saw the multitude of bones around the underground chamber. The opening was so narrow that few scientists could enter. Because of this, the cave was excavated by a team of six women called the underground astronauts . They uncovered more than 1,500 fossils belonging to the same species (Wilford 2015). The bones were distributed across nearly the entire chamber, including side passages (Dirks et. al. 2015: 14). The remains make up at least 15 individuals of a wide span of ages; almost every bone is represented more than once in the find. This allows researchers to study a full population instead of studying individuals (Kepp 2015). Many of the hands, feet, wrists, and ankles are nearly complete, though many of the longer bones are fragmented (Dirks et. al. 2015: 21). It is the largest find of fossils in Africa to date.
