10 NON FARMING
ACTIVITIES
 A dairy is a facility for the extraction and processing of
animal milk - mostly from goats or cows, but also from
buffalo, sheep, or camels - for human consumption.
 People feed their buffalos on various kinds of grass and the
jowar and bajra that grow during the rainy season.
 The milk is sold in the nearby large village.
 Traders have set up collection cum chilling centers from
where the milk is transported to far away towns and cities.
 More than 40% of Indian farming households are engaged in
milk production.
Small Scale Manufacturing
 In villages manufacturing takes place in a very small scale with simple
production methods.
 People are engaged in the production at their own home or in fields.
 Only less than 50 people are engaged in manufacturing.
 Sugarcane is the most common small scale manufacturing business in
village.
 Some of the people have machines to crush the sugarcanes.
 Earlier crushing sugarcane was done by the help of bullocks.
 They crush the sugarcane and produce jaggery and further sell it to
traders to make small profits.
Shop keeping
 The few shopkeepers buy various goods from wholesale markets in the
cities and sell them in the villages.
 Shopkeepers play a big role in villages. All day-to-day, non-agricultural
products, are provided in villages in shops.
 The small general stores in the village sells a wide range of items like rice,
wheat, sugar, tea, oil, biscuits, soap, toothpaste, batteries, candles,
notebooks, pen, pencil and even cloth.
Transport
 Communicating from village to town for purchasing and selling goods
have improved in villages.
 We can find rickshaws, tongas, jeep, tractors, bullock carts and bogey's for
transportation.
 They ferry people and goods from village to town and in return get paid
for it.
Blacksmiths
 They make agricultural implements for farmers , labor's etc.
 Some skilled blacksmiths also make machineries useful for villagers
 Some tools made are axes , saw, pick axe etc. .
 Some machineries are drillers , electric pulleys , tube wells etc.
 Blacksmith play an important role in modernizing the villages
Pottery
 They make pots and crafts according to needs
 They use clay found in the village
 Some skilled potters make beautiful show pieces of different cultures
 Some products found are flower vases , cooking pots , storage pots etc.
 They play an important role in building up and modernizing families in the village
Carpentry
 They make furniture's , doors etc. at cheap and affordable rates with
good quality materials
 They use wood from the village and also from outside villages
 There are many skilled carpenters who make modern furniture's and
other luxurious furniture's
 Some furniture's are sofas, chairs , tables , lamp stands etc.
 They to help in modernizing families in the village
Repairing vehicles
 There are many mechanics in the village .
 They repair from bicycles ,tongas, bulla carts to cars , machines ,trucks etc.
 They fix from simple damages to changing machineries in vehicles
 They repair at affordable rates
 They help in modernizing the village
Teachers
 They are the important people in the village who help in educating the
villagers
 They teach different things which can be useful for the villages
 They are graduates from famous Indian institutes
 They are the key to modernizing the village
 They also teach children who cannot pay fees due to poverty .
Tailoring
 This is one of the most important occupation in the village
 These tailors make dresses for both small and big
 They make both traditional dresses and new fashioned dresses at cheap
rates
 Both readymade and materials are available in their tailoring shops
 They transport many dresses to city and earn a good income
The village

10 non farming activities found in a modern Indian village

  • 2.  A dairy is a facility for the extraction and processing of animal milk - mostly from goats or cows, but also from buffalo, sheep, or camels - for human consumption.  People feed their buffalos on various kinds of grass and the jowar and bajra that grow during the rainy season.  The milk is sold in the nearby large village.  Traders have set up collection cum chilling centers from where the milk is transported to far away towns and cities.  More than 40% of Indian farming households are engaged in milk production.
  • 3. Small Scale Manufacturing  In villages manufacturing takes place in a very small scale with simple production methods.  People are engaged in the production at their own home or in fields.  Only less than 50 people are engaged in manufacturing.  Sugarcane is the most common small scale manufacturing business in village.  Some of the people have machines to crush the sugarcanes.  Earlier crushing sugarcane was done by the help of bullocks.  They crush the sugarcane and produce jaggery and further sell it to traders to make small profits.
  • 4. Shop keeping  The few shopkeepers buy various goods from wholesale markets in the cities and sell them in the villages.  Shopkeepers play a big role in villages. All day-to-day, non-agricultural products, are provided in villages in shops.  The small general stores in the village sells a wide range of items like rice, wheat, sugar, tea, oil, biscuits, soap, toothpaste, batteries, candles, notebooks, pen, pencil and even cloth.
  • 5. Transport  Communicating from village to town for purchasing and selling goods have improved in villages.  We can find rickshaws, tongas, jeep, tractors, bullock carts and bogey's for transportation.  They ferry people and goods from village to town and in return get paid for it.
  • 6. Blacksmiths  They make agricultural implements for farmers , labor's etc.  Some skilled blacksmiths also make machineries useful for villagers  Some tools made are axes , saw, pick axe etc. .  Some machineries are drillers , electric pulleys , tube wells etc.  Blacksmith play an important role in modernizing the villages

Pottery  They make pots and crafts according to needs  They use clay found in the village  Some skilled potters make beautiful show pieces of different cultures  Some products found are flower vases , cooking pots , storage pots etc.  They play an important role in building up and modernizing families in the village
  • 8. Carpentry  They make furniture's , doors etc. at cheap and affordable rates with good quality materials  They use wood from the village and also from outside villages  There are many skilled carpenters who make modern furniture's and other luxurious furniture's  Some furniture's are sofas, chairs , tables , lamp stands etc.  They to help in modernizing families in the village
  • 9. Repairing vehicles  There are many mechanics in the village .  They repair from bicycles ,tongas, bulla carts to cars , machines ,trucks etc.  They fix from simple damages to changing machineries in vehicles  They repair at affordable rates  They help in modernizing the village
  • 10. Teachers  They are the important people in the village who help in educating the villagers  They teach different things which can be useful for the villages  They are graduates from famous Indian institutes  They are the key to modernizing the village  They also teach children who cannot pay fees due to poverty .
  • 11. Tailoring  This is one of the most important occupation in the village  These tailors make dresses for both small and big  They make both traditional dresses and new fashioned dresses at cheap rates  Both readymade and materials are available in their tailoring shops  They transport many dresses to city and earn a good income
