Kalinga in the 261 BCE.
 In the 1st century BCE, Mahameghavana
established the Mahameghavahana dynasty
in Kalinga.
 The Kalinga War (261 BCE) was fought in
ancient India between the Maurya Empire
under Ashoka and the state of Kalinga.

(1) Odissi Dance
• Odissi is a major ancient Indian
classical dance that originated in the
Hindu temples of Orisha.
• Odissi, in its history, performed
predominantly by women &
expressed religious stories, spiritual
ideas of Vaishnavism (Vishnu
as Jagannath).
Odissi performances for ideas of
other traditions such as those
related to Hindu gods Shiva, Surya,
as well as Hindu goddesses.

• Soil types range from fertile alluvial
deltaic soils in coastal plains, mixed red
and black soil in central table-land, red
and yellow soil with low fertility in
Northern Plateau to red, black and brown
forest soils in Eastern ghat region.

the state to a lesser extent.

26. Konark Sun Temple
• Konark Sun Temple, 13th century CE
Sun temple at Konark
• 24 wheels decorated with symbolic
designs, led by a team of six horses.
• 35 km northeast from Puri on the
coastline of Odisha, India.
• Attributed to king Narasimhadeva I of
the Eastern Ganga Dynasty about
1250 CE.
• Kalinga type of architectural style.
• Geometrical patterns, carved wheels
used to serve as sun dials.
• Due to its dark color, it was called
Black Pagoda, ancient sailors used it
as a navigational landmark.

27. Jagannath Puri Temple
• The Shree Jagannath Temple, Hindu
temple dedicated to Jagannath, a form
of Vishnu, in Puri on eastern coast of
India.
• Main features:-
(a) No bird flies over the temple
because the temple looks like Sudarshan
Chakra
(b) No bird has ever built a nest
in the temple.
(c) There is no shadow of the
temple in any time of the day.
(d) The flag of the temple flies in
the opposite direction of the wind.

28. Lingaraj Temple
• Lingaraj Temple, built in 11th
century, is dedicated to Lord
Shiva.
• Considered as the
largest temple of the state.
• Built by king Jajati Keshari of
Soma Vansh.
The main tower of
this temple measures 180-feet in
height.
 It is built in red stone and is a
classic example of Kalinga style
of architecture.
 Has 50 other shrines and is
enclosed by a large compound
wall

Sea beach-Puri

• 21 wildlife sanctuaries in Orisha.
• Chilika wildlife sanctuary famous for
migratory birds.
• Bhitarkanika national park (145 km.sq) in
North-East Kendrapara district.
• The national animal of Orisha is Sambar
Indian Roller.
• Salt-water crocodile is the most famous
animal, found in Bhitarkanika wildlife
sanctuary.
