From the beginning of 15th century, the transaction and global trade between the countries and continents have gradually formed and developed (The Political System, n.d.). Nevertheless, a new concept that happened in recent years is that those developments and the advent of the Internet through the achievements of science and technology are completely changing the face of the world in all aspects. Owing to the Internet, the world becomes globalized (Friedman, 2005). However, it cannot be denied that globalization in the Internet has both advantages and disadvantages. This essay will analyze the aspects of the globalized Internet in terms of economy. It will look at the positive and negative sides of the Internet applications based on the history of the Internet Web browsers, from the initiative of Netscape to the competition between Netscape and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer on the Internet business market. It is noted that many corporations are larger than nation states – more than half the 100 largest economies in the world are corporations.
Integration in the world economy contributes to environmental improvements by promoting growth, increasing incomes, improving property rights and the allowing the efficient use of resources.

Abstract:
Globalization is a multifaceted phenomenon. The paper identify some of the
Challenges it poses, as well as some of the opportunities it offers. Attention is focused on three major aspects of globalization namely economic, cultural, and political.
During 1990 to 2003, the volume of world trade has increased and the higher and middle-income countries managed to increase their share in world trade mainly due to the opening up of economies because of globalization. The middle-income countries had invited more Foreign Direct Investment during the period and the per capita GDP of the low-income countries was marginally increased. This resulted into the economic inequality, which widened between different income groups. In other words globalization has been confined to developed countries and developing countries were able to participate in the process.
However, globalization should not be accused for loosing share of the low-income countries. These countries suffered from internal problems like rapid rise in population, infrastructure bottlenecks, weak financial markets and so on.
Globalization and its benefits required a conducive environment to ensure higher returns and larger markets for foreign investors. To get a share of global capital, technology and output, developing countries had to upgrade their social and economic institutions through administrative, legislative and legal reforms.
Globalization merely provides opportunities to flourish. Globalization is not a tool to produce equality of outcome but it produces equality of opportunity for those with right mindset. Therefore developing countries require focusing on economic restructuring, developing market-supporting institutions and creating efficient regulatory mechanisms.
The low-income countries cannot survive at their own; they require international assistance and a support mechanism so as to facilitate their participation in the process of globalization. The challenge of the hour is to make globalization work towards global prosperity through disaggregate development. The critically necessity in this context are the collective and cooperative actions which should be realized by all countries of the world and particularly the developed ones.

On 15 August 2006, Elvira Arellano, along with her seven-year-old son, Saúl,
took refuge at Adalberto United Methodist Church in the Humboldt Park
neighbourhood of Chicago, Illinois. Arellano had been arrested by immigration
agents in December 2002 while at work as a cleaner of airplanes at Chicago’s
O’Hare International Airport for entering, working and residing in the
United States without state sanction. She is, in other words, according to US
authorities, an illegal alien.
Despite the arrest, Arellano was able to win on humanitarian grounds
three temporary stays of deportation, allowing her to remain in Chicago
through mid-2006 to provide care for her US citizen son. During that time,
she became a prominent spokesperson for Illinois’ unauthorised immigrant
population and the president of La Familia Latina Unida (the United Latino
Family), a Chicago-based organisation which works with families potentially
split by deportation.
But the stays of deportation ended. It was on the day that federal
authorities ordered Arellano to appear at a local office of the Department of
Homeland Security to be deported that she took up sanctuary at the church,
challenging federal government to enter the church’s grounds and arrest her.
Her son has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Arellano wants Saúl
to stay in the country of his birth – which effectively requires her to remain

Arellano’s case has attracted a great deal of attention. She has won the
support of many who see her as someone courageously standing up for the
human rights of migrants, and earned the wrath of many others who perceive
her as a law breaker for being in the United States without authorisation.1
Her defiance of US authorities has not yet led to her arrest – as least as
of October 2006. Indeed, US officials have not entered the church and,
according to one such official, have no intention of doing so. The Arellano

Digital protest, hashtag ethnography, and the racial politics
of social media in the United States
A B S T R A C T
As thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of
Ferguson, Missouri, to protest the fatal police
shooting of unarmed African American teenager
Michael Brown in the summer of 2014, news and
commentary on the shooting, the protests, and the
militarized response that followed circulated widely
through social media networks. Through a
theorization of hashtag usage, we discuss how and
why social media platforms have become powerful
sites for documenting and challenging episodes of
police brutality and the misrepresentation of
racialized bodies in mainstream media. We show
how engaging in “hashtag activism” can forge a
shared political temporality, and, additionally, we
examine how social media platforms can provide
strategic outlets for contesting and reimagining the
materiality of racialized bodies. Our analysis
combines approaches from linguistic anthropology
and social movements research to investigate the
semiotics of digital protest and to interrogate both
the possibilities and the pitfalls of engaging in

n Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 12:03 p.m., an unarmed black
teenager named Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police offi-
cer in Ferguson, Missouri, a small town on the outskirts of St.
Louis. Within the hour, a post appeared on the Twitter social
media platform stating, “I just saw someone die,” followed by
a photograph taken from behind the beams of a small wooden balcony
overlooking Canfield Drive, where Michael Brown’s lifeless body lay uncov-
ered, hands alongside his head, face down on the asphalt.1 Immediately
following the incident, community members assembled to demand an ex-
planation for why this unarmed 18-year-old had been seemingly executed
while reportedly holding his hands up in a gesture of surrender, plead-
ing “don’t shoot.” The impromptu gathering soon turned into a sustained
protest marked by daily demonstrations and violent confrontations with
highly armed local police—all of which were documented in detail across
social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Vine.
Occurring on the heels of other highly publicized killings of unarmed
black men—such as Eric Garner (who died as a result of an illegal choke-
hold by New York City police just weeks before the events in Ferguson), Os-
car Grant (whose death was emotionally portrayed in the award-winning
film Fruitvale Station released just one year prior), and 17-year-old Trayvon
Martin (whose 2012 killing sparked national outcry and spurred numer-
ous forms of activism)—the death of Michael Brown quickly captured
the imagination of thousands across and beyond the United States.2

Samuel Huntington was one of America’s greatest political scientists. In 1993,
he published a sensational essay in Foreign Affairs called “The Clash of
Civilizations?” The essay, which became a book, argued that the post-cold war
would be marked by civilizational conflict.
Human beings, Huntington wrote, are divided along cultural lines —
Western, Islamic, Hindu and so on. There is no universal civilization. Instead,
there are these cultural blocks, each within its own distinct set of values.
The Islamic civilization, he wrote, is the most troublesome. People in the
Arab world do not share the general suppositions of the Western world. Their
primary attachment is to their religion, not to their nation-state. Their culture
is inhospitable to certain liberal ideals, like pluralism, individualism and
democracy.
Huntington correctly foresaw that the Arab strongman regimes were fragile
and were threatened by the masses of unemployed young men. He thought
these regimes could fall, but he did not believe that the nations would
modernize in a Western direction. Amid the tumult of regime change, the
rebels would selectively borrow tools from the West, but their borrowing
would be refracted through their own beliefs. They would follow their own
trajectory and not become more Western.
The Muslim world has bloody borders, he continued. There are wars and
tensions where the Muslim world comes into conflict with other civilizations.
Even if decrepit regimes fell, he suggested, there would still be a fundamental
clash of civilizations between Islam and the West. The Western nations would
do well to keep their distance from Muslim affairs. The more the two
civilizations intermingle, the worse the tensions will be.
Huntington’s thesis set off a furious debate. But with the historic changes
sweeping through the Arab world, it’s illuminating to go back and read his
argument today.
In retrospect, I’d say that Huntington committed the Fundamental
Attribution Error. That is, he ascribed to traits qualities that are actually
determined by context.
He argued that people in Arab lands are intrinsically not nationalistic. He
argued that they do not hunger for pluralism and democracy in the way these
things are understood in the West. But it now appears as though they were

simply living in circumstances that did not allow that patriotism or those
spiritual hungers to come to the surface.
It now appears that people in these nations, like people in all nations, have
multiple authentic selves. In some circumstances, one set of identities
manifests itself, but when those circumstances change, other equally
authentic identities and desires get activated.

The social topic of race, ethnicity, and immigration is critical to discuss so that one can understand how these factors influence people in society. Race refers to the classification of individuals based on social or physical qualities. Ethnicity entails people’s categories based on their language, culture, ancestry, and history. In addition, immigration refers to moving and settling in a specific country temporarily or permanently. Many individuals consider race and ethnicity of residents in a particular area before migrating. In most cases, people move to places where they can find others who understand them. Currently, neighborhoods comprise of individuals who belong to the same race or ethnicity. That is why it is hard for whites to settle in areas where the majority of people living there are African Americans. Therefore, race and ethnicity are the two primary determinants of immigration in the United States of America (USA). Exploring the Tools for Meme Propagation
In this research report, I explore how we currently monitor cultural trends in our campaign efforts. I also want to begin mapping out the tools and capabilities that will be needed to fully operate as a “meme spreading” organization in the days ahead. We recently launched the One Party Planet pamphlet and have gathered a suite of social analytics that reveal much—both as indicators of spreading and as a demonstration of how much deeper and more nuanced our understandings will need to become as we adopt more sophisticated tools for cultural research moving forward.
The approach I take is to compare the spreading of One Party Planet with several memes that went viral as the United States experienced major racial conflict in the last two weeks. By doing so, we can begin to articulate what kinds of monitoring and analytic tools will be needed to fully implement our mission of taking radical ideas into the mainstream.

This is the first in a series of interviews with philosophers on race that I am
conducting for The Stone. This week’s conversation is with Naomi Zack, a
professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon and the author of “The Ethics
and Mores of Race: Equality After the History of Philosophy.” — George Yancy
George Yancy: What motivates you to work as a philosopher in the
area of race?
Naomi Zack: I am mainly motivated by a great need to work and not to be
bored, and I have a critical bent. I think there is a lot of work to be done concerning
race in the United States, and a lot of ignorance and unfairness that still needs to
be uncovered and corrected. I received my doctorate in philosophy from Columbia
University in 1970 and then became absent from academia until 1990. When I
returned it had become possible to write about real issues and apply analytic skills
to social ills and other practical forms of injustice. My first book, “Race and Mixed
Race” (1991) was an analysis of the incoherence of U.S. black/white racial
categories in their failure to allow for mixed race. In “Philosophy of Science and
Race,” I examined the lack of a scientific foundation for biological notions of
human races, and in “The Ethics and Mores of Race,” I turned to the absence of

G.Y.: How can critical philosophy of race shed unique light on what has
happened, and is still happening, in Ferguson, Mo.?
N.Z.: Critical philosophy of race, like critical race theory in legal studies, seeks
to understand the disadvantages of nonwhite racial groups in society (blacks
especially) by understanding social customs, laws, and legal practices. What’s
happening in Ferguson is the result of several recent historical factors and deeply
entrenched racial attitudes, as well as a breakdown in participatory democracy.
G.Y.: Would you put this in more concrete terms?
N.Z.: Let’s work backwards on this. Middle-class and poor blacks in the
United States do less well than whites with the same income on many measures of

Abstract
This article examines the policy gaffes made by senior command-level personnel in the U.S. Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for Operation Fast and Furious. We examine how an
interdisciplinary approach to policy making and policy review may have averted the consequences
associated with this high profile news story.
Officer Down
On December 15, 2010, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shot and killed in Arizona, near the
Mexican border while attempting to arrest a gang of armed subjects who were robbing illegal
immigrants. Agent Terry was hit in the pelvis by a round fired from an AK-47 rifle and later died at the
hospital. Four of the five armed subjects were immediately taken into custody (Cosgriff, n.d.).
Agent Terry’s tragic death was covered extensively by television and print media. Anytime a law
enforcement officer is gunned down, it is likely to get considerable coverage at the local level, and on
slow news days, at the national level too. Given the prominence of the illegal immigration issue in this
country, it is not surprising that Agent Terry’s death would make the national news, and linger for
several days longer than most law enforcement shooting deaths. However, even this story faded from
the mainstream media’s attention… at least it did for a while.
Like most police officer shooting cases, the Terry shooting would have quickly faded and been
supplanted by the type of news stories that seem to captivate the interest of the American public.
Stories such as Casey Anthony trial, the Anthony Weiner scandal, and the untimely death of pop singer
Amy Winehouse seemed to dominate the news in 2011. However, early that year, on February 23,
2011, CBS News first reported a link between Agent Terry’s death and a “gun running” operation
conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). The Brian Terry story was back on
prime time news… and this time a scandal appeared to be brewing (Attkisson, 2011).
Congressional Investigation
As the story received more attention from the mainstream media outlets, some politicos in Washington
D.C. sensed the importance of this issue. Clearly something terrible had happened and not a lot of
information was being provided by ATF or Department of Justice officials. As more information slowly
became available to the public, it became evident that Agent Terry’s tragic death was only the tip of the
iceberg. Clearly, this case was taking a momentum beyond the unfortunate killing of a law enforcement
agent. It was now spilling over into the national political arena, and was becoming a possible wedge
issue for the upcoming presidential campaign in 2012. This incident was becoming a potential
embarrassment to the Obama administratio.

ABSTRACT
The historically contentious relationship between the black
community and the police is one of the most enduring and seem-
ingly intractable challenges facing law enforcement and public
officials in the United States. Given this troubled history, many
cities have established civilian oversight of police to address is-
sues of police misconduct, which are often colored by race. This
article uses Albert Hirschman’s theory of exit, voice, and loyalty
to explore the phenomenon of the willingness of blacks who
have filed complaints against the police in the city of Cleveland
to use the citizen complaint process again in the future, despite
their overwhelming dissatisfaction with the complaint process,
whereas whites and other minorities would not. This paper has
implications for enhancing public officials’ and police adminis-
trators’ understanding of the relevance of the citizen complaint
process for blacks and improving the oversight of police and
police–community relations.
W.E.B. Du Bois’s prophetic declaration that the major problem confronting
American society in the twentieth century would be “the problem of the color
line” still holds true at the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century.
And as ominous as Du Bois’s prognostic prediction about race relations
may have been, one can still sense an element of optimism in his words.
As Stivers notes, “Even where the visions are dark and the prophecies dire,
its [prophecy’s] impulse springs from some grain of hope about future pos-
sibilities that seems to make the speaking worthwhile” (2008, p. 225). As
evidenced by the election of the country’s first African-American president,
significant racial progress has been made in the United States since the time
of Du Bois (1868–1963), who passed away on the eve of the historic March
on Washington at which Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his celebrated “I
Have a Dream” speech. Yet, in spite of this incredible historic achievement

divisions and inequalities that characterized the United States in the twentieth
century are still present today.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
