There are four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Solids have a definite shape and volume, with crystals having repeated particle patterns and noncrystals lacking order. Liquids have a definite volume but no shape, flowing to fill containers. Gases have no definite shape or volume, with particles separated and moving freely. Plasma is the highest energy state, a gas of charged particles found in stars and lightning.
