Casual Game Design: Designing Play for the Gamer in All of UsGreg Trefry
I recently gave an hour long webinar on casual game design for the International Game Developers Association. The talk touched on some of the ground I cover in my book, "Casual Game Design." (http://bit.ly/aFDxd7) I also gave a very brief analysis of some of the design decisions that informed our iPhone Gigaputt. The slides provide a visual guide to the ideas illustrated in the talk (though they make much more sense with the audio). If I can get the audio from the IGDA I will post it here as well.
In the presentation I try to define casual games and define some defining characteristics of casual play. I also touch on the importance of developing a mental model to explain games before going into the process of being a game designer. After laying this initial groundwork I look at some specific games and the mechanics that comprise the gameplay.

Best Fiends Design and Monetization AuditTony Gowland
An audit on the design & monetisation methods used in the mobile free to play (f2p) game Best Fiends.
Seriously is a company formed from a bit of a mobile gaming dream team. A couple of months ago when Best Fiends, their first game, had just released I predicted that although it's very polished & fun to play, it would not break in to the top 100 grossing. So I thought I should probably go back and check to see if my fortune telling skills need work or not.
Was I right? Find out!

I can work to whatever level your game is ready for, from high level product scoping, to deep diving the numbers on a specific feature.

2. Game world
• The terrain is the kart course which consists of roads, grass,
bridges and skies which you occasionally fly though. The
architecture in this game has a wide variety with objects such
as walls, trees, gates and characters that stand on the side
watching the race. The objects in Mario kart also has a wide
variety. When you collect an item box which are placed
around the track, you get a random object which you either
use to make yourself faster or you place in the game world to
obstruct the other players

• In this game you can choose your character and then

non playable characters and your opponents. All
the characters appearing in the game are from the
Mario universe with a couple of characters from
other Nintendo games making special appearances.

the real world is that the controllers

• As said before, you can chose your own avatar
but you can also choose what Kart or bike you
play with you have choosing over the wheels,

combination of those three, you can be in the

of winning.
8. Game type
• Mario Kart is a multiplayer game which is a
more fun way to play as you're playing against
your friends and not just a CPU .

gives the player a choice in what they are
playing instead of just having 1 track
11. Player goals
• This game doesn't really have
objectives within the game. The only goal is to
get a high ranking.
12. Achievements and winning
• When winning a game you get a screen in
which the final rank of the players is
shown and you earn a trophy.
13. Difficulty setting

difficulty settings include things such as higher

inventory but has a box in which it includes an
item you have collected from the item boxes
scattered around the track.
15. Addiction
• With new games and consoles coming out annually, its not that
hard to get addicted to video games. In 2013, the addiction to video
games was recognized as a mental disorder with addiction centers
providing an addiction detox to video games. The majority of these
game addicts that come in to these treatment centers are
teenagers and young adults. The problem doesn’t help itself as now
mobile phones are creating new gaming apps and mass
gaming companies are making hand held consoles so people can
take their games on the go. some addicts take their gaming to the
extreme with negative and angry moods if they don’t sooth their
gaming needs. This problem needs a solution as the more time
people play video games, the less time they have to learn skills such
as socializing and staying fit which can ruin chances of relationships
and jobs which is not good for a modern day society.
