Borderlands the Pre-Sequel
Game world
• The game world is the environment in which the player experiences the game, I have chosen to use the game
borderlands the prequel which is an action role playing first person shooter based on an alien desert planet full of
bandits and thieves following a kind of space cowboy theme the world represents an almost apocalyptic feel with
alien technology with a cartoon style.
• The Terrain within the world gives of a post apocalyptic look however being based on several planets with
advanced technology weapons and minerals, the game is mainly on the ground however there are several parts of
the game set in space or on ships and other planets.
• The architecture in borderlands is very steam punk but sci-fi with large metal structures for buildings, and various
battle ships and scrap yards. However it also includes lots of natural architecture through the planets and the large
rock faces, being set on other planets they have messed around a lot with the art in the terrain making it all big and
colorful.
• Borderlands also includes various interactive objects including several vehicles accessible only in certain areas,
there are several menus that allow you to fast travel and shops for buying and selling items. However a big part of
the borderlands world include the looting side of the game enemies drop various items and there are chests
through the maps that you can open using keys or puzzles, the items include a minerals named moonstone used to
buy certain items in shops, shields and grenades that range depending on level and enemy you kill and then a
whole load of weapons that go buy a class ranking depending on its power.
• The level of the items is depended by the names color, there are a total of 8 levels the order being:
• Level 1 = white = Common.
• Level 2 = Green = Uncommon.
• Level 3 = Blue = Rare.
• Level 4 = Purple = Epic.
• Level 5 = Orange = Legendary.
• Level 6 = Magenta = E-tech.
• Level 7 = Pink = Seraph.
• Level 8 = Cyan = Pearlescent.
Perspective
• The perspective of a video game is the visual content of the game the and the way it looks
and plays including various styles from 2D side strollers to 3D FPS games.
• I have chosen Borderlands 3 which is a game that uses 3D graphics allowing you to look all
around you and move your camera in a 3 dimensional axis, the games characters and terrain
are usually 3d models which can be used in animations and cut scenes within the game, the
game also uses a first person perspective so everything you see within the game is from the
eyes of your playable character, however the 3rd game is the first of the 3 to incorporate a 3rd
person view as they include an online multiplayer with built in character animations already,
this allows you to view the game from the back of your character and gives you a look at the
cool comic style character design.
• the game has a open world mechanic including various non story quests however the main
premise of the game follows a story using various cut scenes to tell this story, with a 3D but
comic like style for the videos with none of the cut scenes being interactive.
• Context sensitivity
Avatar
• The avatar within the game is the visual representative you control on the screen whether it being
the character, vehicle or object. Within the borderlands game you can play a choice of four
character builds you choose from at the very start of the game, these character evolve throughout
the game leveling up progressing through the choice of three skill trees for each character
depending on how you spend the points you obtain, through the game you may also unlock various
skill colors for thee characters and the rarer heads that change the look of the character from the
shoulders up.
• the choices being Athena the gladiator being the first character you meet in a previous game being
a non playable NPC and the narrator of the games main story, she acts as a tank type using a shied
as her special ability.
• The next playable role is Wilhelm who's first appearance being in the 2nd game only having a slightly
difference appearance, he acts as a support role using two deployable drones one acting as a gun
and the other heals him and others when upgraded.
• The 3rd role being Nisha the law bringer also first appears in the 2nd game as a NPC and sheriff at
one of the games towns, having a cold hearted and bloodthirsty personality she acts as a more all
out attack role using a special weapon boost and auto aim as her special move.
• The 4th and final playable role within the game is clap trap the flag trap arguably the games favorite
role, who's first appearance being as early as the first look at the game in the original being a guide
bot that merely opens doors, yet through out the series you’ve seen his evolution and finally
playable role in the new game, his role acts as an overall level character with his special being one
of many depending on how the character analyses the situation.
Narrative
• The borderlands games have always made the story of the games the main point
using various cut scenes and a original art style to portray this, however the 3rd
game has included a lot more then the others with the narrative.
• Firstly the game follows a fixed narrative however you have the choice of 4
playable characters adding a secondary narrative where you will receive different
rewards depending on who you are and then a whole load of different audio clips
and narratives. The game also includes a long list of optional side quests where
you can win rewards and XP as the game uses a free world mechanic.
• The main focus of the story is you play a vault hunter hired by Handsome jack a
precious enemy on the older games, and you are asked find and open the vault
with lots of problems along the way which realistically sets of the story for the
other games in the end hence the name “Pre-Sequel”.
Player goals and rewards
• The borderlands Pre-sequel game follows a main story which consists of
several quests that you must complete in order to progress, each quest
you a required to do a number of tasks usually being either to kill a
certain enemy or number of enemies or survive so long, also to collect
an object or to go to a location to take part in tasks such as small puzzles
or turn switches, also lots of the story quests build up to a final boss
fight where you receive drops from the character a chest a the end and
then a choice of on of 2 or 3 rewards you receive from the quest giver.
• The reward system in the borderlands games always plays a big role as
there is a whole load of guns ,shields, apparel and other rewards, they
are all obtainable from killing enemy's, chests and completing quests
constantly keeping you busy, however the game also has various
achievements you can get from the story and various objectives.
Rules of a game and difficulty settings
• All games follow a set of rules within the game limiting you from going places or being able to just
roam about and do whatever you like, however some games less then others the game I chose
allows you to roam around as you like doing quests as you please unless you are in the middle of a
boss fight where they will have no exit until completion.
• However they still have included so many rules and limits that stop you firstly the map does have
limits places which you can not pass or you may die or may just be unaccusable due to height or
barriers, the game also includes a leveling up process so you can not use overpowered weapons
from the get go and must level up to use or even obtain.
• The game also includes several points which you can only get to by taking part in the story such as
unlocking parts of the map or even changing parts of the map.
• Most games where the story is the focus of the experience tend to have settings at the start of the
game where you may change the difficulty of the game which changes the level of skill the game
requires and also the rarity of the drops and XP. The borderlands game includes this having the
levels being the normal mode you get at the start true vault hunter mode and ultimate vault hunter
mode which you unlock once completed the game in this you get better loot harder enemies and
further ability to level up your character or a new one.
Inventory
• Your inventory in many role playing games is key and a big part in the experience
of the game being the collection of the in game items you can collect throughout
the process, the borderlands pre-sequel includes a wide range of in game items
which you collect and sell through the game, all obtainable through enemies,
shops, quests and chests in the world each weapons level and power is ranged
depending on the level and the class which is measured through the colors of
the items name. the items will be better the further you get in the game as well
as the higher level you get or what you kill, it can also change depending on the
difficulty you choose to play.
Winning
• When it comes to the borderlands games the ”winning”
system is quite large as the game does follow a general story
with multiple stages and levels it also includes lots of side
quests and a ranking up system which can also be rewarding
itself.
• When it comes to the story quests and side missions you tend
to receive them from NPC’s, and they generally consist of
killing enemy's, bosses and a few puzzle missions or collecting
items, but once you have completed the steps you are asked
you report back to the person who gave you the quest and
receive xp and a piece of equipment. But the game also
includes a rather large skill tree which you improve as you play
and level up with each of the four characters having 3
separate trees each.
