Editor's Notes

  • #3 Ladies and gentleman, today I am going to present in front of you my surveillance into the role of an airport terminal manager and if I am being given a chance, how I am going to learn and make a difference in the field of my operations. I will focus on the first 90 days of my service depicting how I will accelerate and grow in my career. To make it more viable, I have divided my anticipated work pattern in a time series i.e. a time frame of 30, 60 and 90 days. As the presentation will proceed you will come to know how my work activities mature from simple learning to complex decision making over a period of time.
  • #4 Before starting my career as an airport terminal manager, I would like to do some initial homework. I will read all the available data and past records of the organization for the airport terminal operations. This will enable me to understand the core functions and intricacies of the airport management. After performing the initial survey, I will join the organization with better confidence and understanding (Wang, 2006). Learning will involve various laws and regulations governing airport terminal operations, broad strategic plan of the top management, personnel manuals and minutes of board meetings of the last six months. I will also review the relevant financial data, budget and key business strategies and goals(NAMI, n.d).
  • #5 Apart from this, an insight into the organizational structure, staffing charts, past evaluation of employees and the organization’s contingencies and commitments will help me a lot in my future business actions (NAMI, n.d). My first 30 days will then be characterized by a wave of learning about the workplace in a deeper way. This will involve having a deeper insight of my current and prospective relationship with key stake holders by using a number of techniques like one-to-one meetings, roundtable conferences, video conferencing, conference calls and emails (Hitt, & Smith, 2004).
  • #6 First 30 days at work will for see a number of challenges for me. The most important of them is assimilation into the culture of the airport terminal. Learning a new culture and adopting it the way it is, takes considerable time and effort, however if done properly this pays a lot in the end. I will try to do this by having formal and informal meetings with my subordinates and peers. Having a good network of formal and informal communication will also help me fulfil a number of responsibilities like ensuring service and operational delivery within the terminal area etc. (Bolander, 2010). Moreover understanding culture and making personal relationship will help me motivate and lead Terminal Department Managers in an efficient manner. My interpersonal skills and motivational abilities will help me pass through this stage easily. Along with making an initial impression, I will also perform my key responsibilities of reporting and managing various tasks in the first 30 days.
  • #7 This diagrams will help clarify my activities in my first 30 days in a more precise manner.
  • #8 After having a clear insight of the operational activities, working relationships, culture and ethics of the organization, I will move to the accomplishment of the short term and long term organizational goals. My first focus will be on the achievement of highest security standards in the airport. This will entail maintaining various levels of security arrangements in the premises. I will ensure that the outside area of the airport is fully secured through proper barriers, security cameras and onsite patrolling by security personnel. I will also ensure that all security appliances are advanced and up-to-date and systems like CAPPS II and biometrics are properly functioning (Tyson, & Grabianowski, 2008). I will also constitute a secret team that will be patrolling on the airport terminal like normal passengers having an eye over all the passengers on the airport terminal. They will have an eye on any unattended luggage or on any unusual deviant behaviour or discussion as an additional security parameter (Adey, 2004). In order to understand the level of passenger flows, I will do a regular survey of the premises to get an insight of the passenger’s needs and requirements. With observations and forecasts as well as past records and data, I will ensure that there is an adequate place and accommodation for the passengers (Odoni, & Neufville, n.d).
  • #9 Managing health and security of passengers will be another challenging job. In this regard I will ensure that proper health and security related signs are properly placed at relevant areas. Proper communication with fire fighting facilities and their proper placement are two important issues in managing health and safety of passengers (National Research Council (US) et.al, 2010). Moreover I will also ensure that a team of psychologists and doctors are available at all times to combat with any critical health problems at airport terminal like stroke, fainting, heart attack, flying sickness etc. (OCR, n.d). So my second phase of work life i.e. period of 30-60 days would be largely characterized by monitoring and ensuring compliance with existing goals and standards of workplace.
  • #10 This is an overview of my second phase of operations.
  • #11 The third stage from day 61st to day 90th will be characterized by more arduous job responsibilities and functions. After having an insight into the current situation of security compliance, passenger flows and health and safety conditions, I will develop new plans and strategies keeping in view the loop holes in the work setting and any present and prospective business opportunities. To accomplish this task in a most positive manner, I will establish a virtual team having team members from various departments. Having a blend of employees and executives I will be able to learn the constraints and opportunities available to my decisions and projects. I will also conduct workshops and seminars for employee awareness and for communicating new goals and opportunities to them (Hitt, & Smith, 2004).
  • #12 In the last my ultimate focus will be achievement of desired results through team leading and motivation. I will ensure that I receive most desirable results through team sessions and meetings to ensure delivery of qualitative service. (Carr, & Nanni, 2009). Moreover team sessions will be focussed on delivering timely results through proper division of tasks and responsibilities on short term basis. (Dodd, Cavanagh, & Cavanagh, 2010).My ultimate focus will be the achievement of quality service and building profitable relationship with all stake holders. I will learn through my experience and my performance scale would improve considerably over a passage of time.
  • #13 In the last I would say, I have tried to communicate my motives and plans for my prospective business relationship with you. I have the capacity of working in a team environment and i have the potential to lead my team members towards the achievement of desired results. My ability to work in pressure and get the best out of my team members in hard times through my interpersonal skills are my additional abilities that would help me a lot during my work. Moreover, with the passage of time I will gain enough experience and expertise to perform my role as airport terminal manager in a profitable way for both of us.
