Levi Strauss
Levi Strauss at Home and Abroad As one attempts to assess the business ethics of Levi Strauss and
Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of conduct
that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with the parameters
of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work conditions is an ethical
behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social responsibility). Obviously, it s
very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad companies boosting profits from
lower labor costs via exploiting foreign workers in sweatshops . I am going to take a much broader
approach here in my assessment, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now able
to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will be repaid
when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two protagonists in
this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in hand, and a reasonable
person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has allowed and promoted unchecked
outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate giants and their respective behaviors here.
Do these two corporations have a responsibility to monitor the conduct of the companies they do
business with in particular, their contractors and suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view
of corporate social responsibility, I believe that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this
outsourcing is legal, and despite the mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these
two companies of all of the blame I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. Levi
Strauss overall has conducted itself with far greater corporate social responsibility than Nike has, in
my judgment. Strauss for many years withdrew from China due to their notoriety as a non democratic
country with abusive labor conditions.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas
The purpose of this essay is to analyze one of the more popular and well known poems written by
Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. The poem relates to the
shortness of life and the inevitability of death that should not be easily accepted, which was a common
theme for Dylan Thomas. This is ironic given the poet s early death from a drunken binge in New
York City while he was visiting the United States as part of a tour in which he recited his poems to
adoring fans.
Thomas powerful message is contained in the form of a villanelle. The villanelle is a highly structured
poem which makes use of a great deal of repetition in its standard nineteen lines. The first five stanzas
are tercets while the sixth and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Loss of one s faculties can make life seem unbearable but Thomas wants his father to focus on life s
positive aspects and not dwell on the negativity.
In the sixth and final stanza, Thomas speaks to his father directly, having finished his four examples of
men who fight death ( And you, my father, there on that sad height ). Thomas implores his father on
the precipice of death to speak ill or good, as long as it is done with passion ( Curse, bless me know
with your fierce tears, I pray ). The poet realizes passion may stave off death. He also hopes his father
might identify with the four types of men cited in the poem as Thomas apparently viewed his father as
an intelligent and decent, but very ill, free spirit.
Of course, Thomas message isn t meant only for his father. It is normal to have regrets late in life. It is
not uncommon for people to give up hope and look upon death as a welcome prospect. Yet Thomas
realizes that life is better than death, which is the ultimate destroyer of hope in this life. The poet also
reminds us to seize the day and make the most of whatever time we have.
The issue Thomas addresses in his poem can be a very difficult one which all of us may face at some
point. Choosing life over death can be especially difficult for the terminally ill. Their plight can have a
dramatic effect on family members and other loved ones who

Story Of An Hour Setting Essay
Uses of Setting in The Story of an Hour
Setting plays an extremely important role in all stories as a device to help create the situation
characters are in, but sometimes the setting itself tells a story. Within Kate Chopin s The Story of an
Hour the setting is used to not only reveal the feelings Louise Mallard has about her marriage, but also
Victorian era marriages as a whole. The Story of an Hour is a short story about a woman who was told
her husband was dead. People are expecting a reaction of grief from her, due to the fact that those
around her believe she is a perfect Victorian housewife. However, she can t help but feel the weight of
the world lifted off of her shoulders as her obligations to her marriage are finally coming to an end.
Through Kate Chopin s use of limited setting with Mrs. Mallard s room, the staircase, and the window
of this house, an idea of Victorian Era marriages is displayed.

Mallard feels, but also attempts to reveal wives view of marriage during the time period. The staircase
is where Victorian era norms were affecting Louise s reactions and displayed self. In the beginning of
this short story, after she hears about her husband s supposed death, Chopin writes, She wept at once,
with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister s arms (1). While Mrs. Mallard is on the staircase she
always keeps her true feelings to herself and shows a fake version which adheres to the norms that not
only her sister but also her husband s friend are expecting of her. This is shown later in the story when
it is revealed to the reader that she actually was not happy with her marriage and was excited to hear
of her husband s death. Chopin uses the staircase to represent a place where other s opinions affect
how women at the time acted, alluding to the societal norms of the Victorian

Long-Term Consequences Of Children In The Culture Of...
In today s society, children are immersed in the culture of competition. This can be seen in all aspects
of children lifestyles: games, sports, classroom settings, etc. Competition can be healthy in
moderation, but too often children are only taught to win. However, the long term consequences of
such a competitive culture are seldom thought of by parents. Placing too much emphasis on winning
can destroy a child s view on hard work and team play, as well as destroy self esteem and confidence
later on in life. In our society, competition is not beneficial for kids and must be discouraged, or we
risk raising a generation grown on false hope.
Hard work and team play are often aspects of a child s life that are diminished with the overemphasis

People argue that in order for our children to learn to succeed in life, we must train them from an early
age. Matt Richtel s New York Times article mentions this. Many scholars agree that competition is
necessary, ingrained and essential (Richtel, 2012). To some degree, this is true. We do need to train
children to excel in all that they are capable of doing. However, if we were to allow for competition to
be a part of the everyday lives of children, we must allow for it to occur only for self improvement. If
we allow for competition, we must make it okay for them to lose. A platform for trial and error is
necessary training. Sadly, not everyone has that mindset, and winning is the goal. We can t change
everyone s mind about it, so we must work to discourage childhood competition altogether. In
Competition Can Be a Positive Experience for Kids, Mark Cinelli analyzes the dynamics of
competition, and states the type of competition that we need to see in Competition is a big part of our
children s lives, and it s here to stay for a long time . . . We need to praise every effort by character,
self esteem, a competitive spirit and a sense of fair play. I think we d all agree that if our children
displayed all of the above attributes throughout their lives, we would be extremely proud parents.

Michael Porter s Generic Strategies
Strategic Marketing:
Undoubtedly, strategic marketing supports Continuous improvement and product evolution and it is
one of the most important functions in a company, if not exactly the most important, strategic

Private Property In John Locke s Social Contract
In his social contract, Locke also specified the purpose of a legitimate government and clarified how a
legitimate government can exercise authority. Aside from providing security and addressing
inconveniences found in the state of nature, Locke argued that the purpose of government is to protect
people s private property. Property is a profound component of Locke s social contract as it is tangible
and gives people more autonomy over their lives. According to
Locke, property becomes private once man adds his labor to public property. As the man improved the
public property in some manner, he can officially lay his claim to it. Owning property allows people to
improve their living conditions and can empower strong economic actors. Locke

Designing A Contractor Management System For A Site Expansion
Design Deficiencies
The following report answers questions on design deficiencies. It will describe three design disasters
and examine the causes of the disaster and the impact they had on future designs. It will then discuss a
design and layout case study and the setting up of a contractor management system for a site
expansion.
Tacoma Bridge Collapse
Brief Description of the Disaster The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (aka Galloping Gertie ) was opened to
traffic on July 1, 1940 and was built to link Tacoma to the Gig Harbour. The Tacoma Bridge was built
with a light design which made it very sensitive to high winds. It lacked the ability to resist the winds
but rather swayed and vibrated with the wind direction (Britton, n.d.). Due the harmonic phenomena,
the swaying of the bridge worsened (Britton, n.d.). Four months after the opening of the bridge on
November 7, 1940, there was a 70 kilimeter per hour wind storm around the bridge area. The wind
caused the bridge to sway and vibrate turbulently from side to side, until it eventually tore the bridge
apart (Britton, n.d.).
Cause of the Disaster The cause of the incident was as result of the structure of the bridge which could
not resist the wind. Rather than resist the wind directional flow, it let the wind pass through it (Britton,
n.d.). As a result, the combined force of the winds and the internal stress in the bridge structure was far
too great for what the bridge could withstand, leading to its self destruction (Britton,

Informative Essay On Kites Research Paper
Introduction
Kites for centuries have been an interesting object of flight fascinating people all over the world. The
standard diamond kite can be made at home simply with 2 wooden dowels, plastic sheeting, strong
tape, twine and a kite string or fishing line. Considering kites are simple and easy to make, at home
you can also design it whatever way you like. It s become an unpopular activity for as you can see
technology has advanced, but today I ll be presenting to you the history and aerodynamics on kites
before the advancement of technology and a more scientific approach.
History and Pioneers

But, who s to tell the tale of exactly when and where. All we know now is everything scientists have
studied; the aerodynamics of kites, and different ways to create the kite and maintain flight. As there
are many designs of the kite Lawrence Hargrave was one creator to make the first box kite. Lawrence
was born in 1850 in Greenwich England. In 1872 he came to Australia in search of gold but the ship
was wrecked on side the Queensland coast. 1883 he retired and devoted the remainder of his life to
research working into problems connected with human flight.

Different Kite Designs
There are different types of kites such as the standard diamond, box kite, sled, delta and winged box.
They re easy to make at home simply googling and watching YouTube tutorials for different ways to
make them. It s definitely a fun activity for the whole family to enjoy. For a simple diamond kite you
will need two wooden dowels both at each size of your choice ideally one 90cm and one 120cm. The
longer the dowel is the spine of the kite, the shorter dowel the crosspiece to form diamond shape. You
will also need plastic sheeting or recycled garbage bags, strong tape such as packing tape or electrical,
twine and kite string or fishing

The American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt
The famous American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, once said Remember, remember always, that
all of us, and you and I especially are descended from immigrants and revolutionists. Franklin D.
Roosevelt brings attention to the importance of one s immigration history that has shaped the Western
societies of the present. Being part of a first generation Canadian family, my family s immigration
history is still very recent. However, the decision to come to Canada was not one made in an instant,
several historic forces influenced my family s arrival to North America. To begin with, my
grandmother, being part of my primary family, left her ancestral home in Lahore, Pakistan to come to
India due to the Partition of India and Pakistan which had caused mass migration, religious conflict
and she ultimately ended up in Amritsar. The Sikh Massacre of 1984 caused my primary family to
move from Amritsar to Hoshiarpur, Punjab because of Sikh extremists, militaristic activity and the
targeting of innocent Sikh civilians. Caste also had a big impact on my family since my mother
married my father due to Caste, they were discriminated against frequently and finally moved to
Canada in 1995 for better opportunities. The historical forces that brought my family to Canada are
due to the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Anti Sikh riots of 1984 and to escape the Caste
System of India.
Initially, my grandmother s departure from her ancestral home was influenced by the Partition of

Dramatic Techniques In Arcadia
Arcadia is a play that Izzy and I felt very attached to so when the moment came to choose a scene, we
instantly knew which play we wanted to perform. Some plays are better understood when they are
read, but Arcadia is on the other end of that spectrum. Arcadia was the perfect play for us perform
because we had enough actors (three of us) and Arcadia s Act II, Scene 2 felt perfect for this final.
Izzy, Cole, and I have a funny dynamic as a group of friends so that translated perfectly into our scene
because the lens with which we interpreted the scene was comedic something we thought Stoppard
intended. Cole will play Jellaby, the sarcastic butler who is simply just trying to get through his day,
and he is perfect for the role. Izzy will play Lady Croom, the head of the house who always seems to
be courted by men at her house, and Izzy brings the perfect aggressiveness to convey overt power. I

Septimus and Lady Croom are sitting down when Jellaby brings in her infusion. I must pour tea for
her and hand it to her while we continue a serious conversation and then immediately rip up the letter
from Lord Byron. The next pivotal moment is the most important in the whole scene. Septimus
justifies his meeting with Mrs. Chater by telling Lady Croom that it was only because, in his madness,
he believed the Chater with her skirts over her head would give [him] the momentary illusion of the
happiness to which [he] dared not put a face (61). During this interaction, I jump up and corner Izzy
on one side of the stage whilst in my passionate speech and then when I am finished I retreat into
myself. Izzy then executes Lady Croom s art of seduction by dragging her finger along my shoulder
while she passes me to the door. This staging is somewhat complicated but it contributes greatly to the
greatness of our

Disputes For Sweatshops
Background information
Diane Angeles 10E
Introduction
Sweatshops are exceedingly contentious for numerous reasons interrelated to human rights, greed and
consumerism, feminism and environmental ethics. This segment of the proposal will briefly outline
four immensely combative disputes connected to sweatshops.
Human Rights Breaches
There are various ways to which the operation of sweat shops breach the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (UDHR) advocated by the United Nations (UN). Most sweatshop operators neglect the
health and safety of their workers and often use physical abuse as a source of empowerment to force
the workers to perform unreasonable amounts of labour for extremely long hours at rapid speeds. This
is a direct breach to the UDHR statement which states that everyone has the right to rest leisure,
including reasonable limitation of working hours and precious holidays with pay (Article 24). These
working conditions are appalling and breach various categories of human rights.
Fuelling Greed
Human misery is experience by sweatshop workers everyday as a result of the extreme greed
substantial companies portray towards sweatshops as a whole. Large companies involved in the
fashion industry are approaching sweatshops demanding cheaper prices to produce products that will
later on be sold for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is known by most that majority of employees in sweatshops are women, in fact a piling 85% of
sweatshops workers are females. Not just women but also children and teenagers are treated no more
than mere objects bound to comply with orders in attempt to avoid inhumane consequences such as
persistent physical abuse. Earning less than three dollars a day, mothers have no choice but to leave
their children in their hometowns to work in endlessly in hopes that their children will not have a
future like their own. Cheap female labour is unacceptable and should not be

The first sedimentary rock unit that occurred during the Sevier Orogeny is the Kootenai Formation.
This formation consists of four members; each has a distinct characteristic. The first member of the

limestone unit that indicates the activity of folding. The third member is similar to the first member as
it is also a clastic unit; however, the upper clastic member has a finer grain size compared to the lower
member, which indicates a narrow channel deposition. The upper clastic unit marks the start of
Laramide orogeny, where the thick skin deformation began to occur. The fourth and the last member
of the Kootenai Formation is the Gastropods limestone. Gastropod limestone formed a border between
the Kootenai Formation and the Blackleaf Formation. This formation took place during the emergence
of the Western Interior Seaway. Blackleaf Formation consists of the Flood member and the Vaughn

lymphocytes can results into release of large numbers of cfDNA in the absence of apoptosis or

This signifies a possible immunomodulatory role for cfDNA. These days cfDNA remains to be hot

Donald, named as Ducky, a son of prominent senator Richard Goosebush and Maria Goosebush got
lost when he was nine years old. No one knows where he got lost, and it has been a mystery since
then. Baby Ducky belonged to a wealthy family with the superior position in society. His father was a
senator and had his chain of stores called Goosebush Store almost in every corner of the street in
America. And he was so popular that when he ran for senator, he won by 99% of the vote. It was
obvious for people to bring up questions about the disappearance of Ducky as he was from the famed

this might have been the reason that he feared that his odd child might ruin his business and reputation
when Ducky would have grown up. The Senator did not want his son to be introduced to the society.
He always used to say that the little Ducky had to go. Thus, the most comfortable manner for him
would be to kill Ducky. Killing Ducky might have been comfortable for him because he was well
aware of his power in society. He recognized that people would not query him or suspect him even if
he killed ducky because first of all ducky was his son and also he possessed immense wealth and the
ability to serve whatever he thinks. He was a senator, which might have made him some other benefit

Taking a Look at Cholera
Cholera is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. An infection from this
bacterium, if not treated soon, can cause serious illness or even death within hours of contracting the
infection¹. Vibrio cholerae infects the large intestine, causing extreme cases of diarrhea in which an
individual has the potential to die within hours of developing symptoms due to dehydration.
Symptoms of the disease include rapid heart rate, hypotension, and dry mucous membranes².
The cholera virus infects mainly humans, but rare cases were also found in other mammals, such as
dogs and bison. The bacterium that causes cholera is mainly found in places where a main source for

The House by The Railroad
Edward Hopper is a renowned American painter. In the poem the house by the Railroad, he tries to
portray a picture of a house erected beside the railroad. This poem seems to bear a lot more than what
its simple title indicates. He has used the railroad to emphasize the rift between the viewer s world and
the picture space. The more one tries to penetrate the depths of his paintings, the more difficult it
becomes. Hopper s artistic vision was in line with his view of the contemporary world and nature.
This piece of art symbolizes loss that is felt when present progress leaves behind an agrarian society
the central theme being the Alienation of modern life.
In this picture, Victorian style house stands alone in the field. A railroad track cuts through the
foreground. There is a bare sky behind the house with no secondary objects in the immediate
surroundings of the building. this enables us to keenly focus on the articulation of the building and its
relationship with its environment.
This picture can be broken down into two basics: the house and the train line. However, this is not
really what Hopper is trying to convey to us. Life in this country is made of pure isolation in nature.
The presentation of the train cutting across the land conveys how the train serves those in the country
different from those in the city.
In the use of light to depict the mood of the situation, Hopper uses intense light

Samsung s Accounting Probe And Its Impact On The...
In July of 2015, Toshiba Corporation announced that an independent party had discovered that there
were accounting irregularities. Accounting irregularities sounds like a nice way to say, they have
uncovered fraud. In addition, Chief Executive Hisao Tanaka s accounting irregularities forced him to
resign. At the time of the initial announcement, the overstatement was thought to be around $3.2
billion in charges ( Toshiba s Accounting Probe, 2015, para. 1). How can this happen? The why and
how can usually be summed up to greed and poor ethics in the leadership and culture inside of these
large organizations. However, to help us understand the scale of this scandal, it is important to look at

rather it creates an environment where people who have poor ethics can manipulate the system to
provide a more favorable outcome. On May 8, Toshiba announced it was expanding its investigation

the organization. On May 13th, Toshiba announces it is likely to take mark downs in operating profit

it might be far more widespread for instances of improper accounting. The company reports that it

A Change of Policing Policy
Estonia, a small country located along the Baltic sea, is young in comparison to the United States
because it fought for its independence just twenty five years ago. A trip twenty six years into the past
in Estonia would find every person under communist rule and in dire need of a change of civil rights
policy. This position was common among the Soviet Bloc countries up until it disbanded. People in
these post soviet countries desperately fought for better human rights. They are now being rewarded;
human rights in countries previously under soviet rule are improving greatly. Human rights apply to

People in these trying conditions can, as of recently, experience a humane time in prison systems and
even avoid it altogether in some cases, like the rights the United States boasts. United States citizens
generally also have the right to vote due to their democratic government, and many post soviet citizens
are now able to boast the same. Voting in these places is a hard fought right. Rachel Denber, Deputy
Director, Europe and Central Asia Division of the Human Rights Watch organization, writes about the
fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and about the expectations involved. Many people immediately
thought that without communism in the ex union the governments would immediately turn to
democracy. Those people were wrong because communism still ruled unfortunately (Denber 1). Any
entity opposing those in power was effectively countered, and in many cases imprisoned for trumped
up charges. Newer politicians developed to try to swing the system towards democracy, but initially
failed. Putin has surprisingly been in power for a over twenty five years with no political opposition,
but fortunately there are now countries within this category that have developed their own systems of
government to include democracy. Denber says that in Ukraine the Orange revolution of 2004 ousted
the government s manipulations and put Viktor Yushchenko into power through sequential democratic
elections. A similar revolution in Georgia, the Rose Revolution of 2003, led to a

It was the Worst of Times
The opening of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens has much to say about a person s mortal
journey; It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
Our kids were growing up, and life was about to change radically for the Clarks and our future at
Comfort Island.
The fabric of our carefree existence was starting to show wear when in October of 2002, Kira was
diagnosed with breast cancer. Doctors performed surgery and six months of treatment followed. It
turned out that an unscrupulous insurance agent misrepresented the product he had sold us. We filed
two formal complaints with the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner, but the complaints were
rejected, and it was obvious that we were simply unwitting victims in another example of political
corruption.
We were forced to spend critical funds we had saved. We got some relief from medical assistance
programs that pitch in for people in situations like ours, but it could have been much worse if Kira s
generous cousin George hadn t come to our financial rescue. The bad news was we thought we had
catastrophic medical insurance that would protect us against present and future calamities, and this
would obviously not be the case going forward.
It was the middle of June before Coty, his friend Josiah Hyatt, and I arrived at the river. Kira came a
few days later with her younger sister, Laura, and Laura s daughter, Alexandra. Tori talked us into
letting her stay with her friend, Brittany Baldwin, and Brittany s family

Impact Of Terrorism On The Middle East
HAMAS INTRODUCTION: Terrorism in the Middle East has brought the Israeli Palestinian conflict
to the attention of the world. These terrorist groups use murder, bombs, threats, and other violent acts
to get their way politically. Hamas, the organization that has replaced Fatah as the representative of the
Palestinians, is a leading sponsor of terrorism. Critics say the group is a terrorist organization that
wants nothing but to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth. Supporters say Hamas, which represents the
only organized Palestinian military force, is a coalition of freedom fighters and liberators defending
the Palestinian people.
HAMAS CREATION AND LEADERSHIP: This group was created in 1987 and continues to expand
its power today. Hamas formed in late 1987 at the beginning of the first Palestinian intifada. Hamas
was created by Sheik Ahmad Yasinat, along with Abdel Aziz al Rantissi, and Mohammad Taha in late
80 s at the beginning of the first Palestinian uprising ( Biersteker 2008). Hamas uses paramilitary force
and the violent part of Hamas, stage anti Israeli attacks including improvised explosive device attacks,
and rocket attacks against Israeli targets inside the country of Israel. Its roots are in the Palestinian
branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, and it is supported by a robust sociopolitical structure inside the

The United States And The World War II
The United States, also known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. The United States has
been an icon for freedom and integrity for generations before us and is bound to have written in
various texts around the world. The United States has done its best to do the right thing throughout the
world. It believes itself to be the one to fix the issues that are happening in the world around them as
an act of kindness and justice. In the first World War, when Britain was falling and the German troops
were right on the horizon, American President at the time, chose to involve us in a war that had
originally not been our own. At the time of 1917, President Woodrow Wilson admitted us into the
campaign as a show that we would take a stand against the German Empire. The country did the same
at the year of 1941 in World War II, only after Japan had initiated an attack on American soil. As seen
from these two occurrences, America only then would involve themselves in foreign affairs when it
was necessary to do so and where they were involved themselves. There is also the idea that America
shouldn t be involved in foreign affairs as a whole, due to its moral and economic effect upon the
country. In the idea of the involvement causing economic hassles to the country, those that think this
usually lean towards the liberal standpoint of the country. Those that are more patriotic tend to ignore
the economic issues that come from United States involvement in foreign affairs

Nicotine Cell Proliferation And Invasion
Journal Assignment 2
Background
Purpose of the research
The purpose of this research is to show that nicotine induces cell proliferation and invasion as well as
epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), even though nicotine is not carcinogenic on its own.
These series of inductions of mechanisms lead to lung cancer as well as breast cancer and pancreatic
cancer.
Type of cells chosen for study
The lung cancer cells especially in non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are the primary target cells for
this study. In addition to the lung cancer cells, the human breast cancer cells and pancreatic cancer
cells are selected for the study in order to compare and confirm the similar activities of the gene
expression and mechanism that induce these cancers.
Background of the topic
Nicotine is the primary component of tobacco products, which causes addiction and can eventually
lead to lung cancer through series of metabolic activities. (http://www.carcinogenesis.com/article.asp?

than any other time of life. Childhood is a time of curiosity and realization. What you learn in your

I would not let this happen to me. (Dillard, P.26) She had realized how people s youthful appearance
deteriorate as they aged. It kind of scared her, because she didn t want it happening to her. Another
difference Dillard observed was religion. She disliked the Catholic schoolchildren, because she was
afraid of their beliefs. She expressed thoughts on how uptight the religion was compared to her own
when she said Whatever the pope said, I thought it was no prize, it didn t work, our Protestant lives
were much sunnier, without our half trying. (Dillard, P. 33). She also talked about changes in
Pittsburgh s appearance. City workers continually paved the streets, They poured asphalt over the
streetcar tracks, streetcar tracks their fathers had wormed between the old riverworn cobblestones,
cobblestones laid smack into the notorious nineteenth century mud. This message is important because
after childhood, you start to grow more aware of the world around you, which is a big change.
Children are often oblivious to changes, but as you get older, you notice how things change more up
close and personal. Throughout An American Childhood, Dillard expresses how significant history of
various subjects are. We children lived and breathed our history our Pittsburgh history, so crucial to
the country s story and so typical of it as well without knowing for believing any of it.

The Nature Of Human Nature In George Eliot s Silas Marner
In George Eliot s Silas Marner there is no character who exemplifies the realism of human nature
more than Godfrey Cass. The very fabric of Godfrey s characterization begs for analysis. Through
Godfrey s actions, or lack of them, and the resulting consequences of his decisions, Silas Marner
becomes a novel that draws a discussion of what good naturedness means in regards to action versus
passivity. Godfrey s passivity is the driving force of the novel and in true Eliot fashion, it is his
passivity that makes him neither a victim, nor a villain, but puts him somewhere in between. Put forth
as a fine, open faced, good natured young man, Godfrey immediately contrasts his brother Dunstan, a
spiteful jeering fellow, who seemed to enjoy his drink the more when other people went dry (Eliot 23).
This automatically pits one against the other simply put, as good versus bad. Dunstan mocks him for
his nature, saying, I m so easy and good natured. You ll take any trouble for me, essentially throwing
Godfrey s most highly praised virtue back in his face and further cementing their previous
categorization (Eliot 25). Godfrey is held in high esteem after this initial introduction. Furthermore,
the condition of Godfrey Cass is one of whom had felt the keen point of sorrow or remorse and whom
thanks to their native human kindness even riot could never drive into brutality (Eliot 29). According
to his condition, Godfrey has weathered the conditions that have caused him sorrow and remorse,
rather than having caused the conditions in the first place. This sets up Godfrey s rationalization
behind his passivity, and allows for the notion that simply possessing a good nature is a good enough
excuse to leave his decisions to chance. Consequently, after leaving such decisions to chance, the
hesitating Godfrey finds that his own downfall unequivocally rests on his own shoulders (Eliot 26).
Godfrey s hesitating and passive nature is more prevalent in none other than his denial of his infant
daughter, Eppie. With the introduction of his secret wife and child, Molly and Eppie respectively,
Godfrey s good naturedness takes its greatest hit. While Godfrey Cass was taking draughts of
forgetfulness from the

there are so many different forms of soccer and different styles of soccer has made it the game it is
today. According to Mark Stewart, (Stewart 15) International soccer took a long time to become a real
thing and now it is very popular. The first international soccer game would take place in the Olympic
games. The first modern Olympics were held in Athen, Greece, in 1896. Soccer had its first chance to
play in the Olympics in 1900 at Paris, France. Soccer was the first team sport allowed into the
Olympics. When International soccer was first played at the Olympics, England was the first team to
win the Olympics for soccer. They were able to beat the

Everyone knows what animal testing is, it doesn’t matter...
Everyone knows what animal testing is, it doesn t matter who you are. Some are for it, others are
against it. I happen to be one of the ones against it. Let me give you 4 reasons why animal testing is a
horrible idea. One, there are obviously ethical reasons, as well as religious reasons. Two, the idea of
animal testing when we can grow artificial skins is moronic. Three, tests made on animals can lead to
wrong or inconclusive results. Fourth, the scientist themselves.
The religious reasons are most obvious. Buddhist are very against cruelty to any race, species,
animals, people everything. Christians should also be against the cruelty to anything because of their
God creating everything, but they refuse to believe animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As said by Ellen DeGeneres in My Point... And I Do Have One If you want to test cosmetics, why do
it on some poor animal that hasn t done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted
of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit s eyes, they should
throw it in Charles Manson s eyes and ask him if it hurts.
Animals are not exactly like us. Sure they can find similarities, rabbits for eye products, apes for
reactions. But we will never find an animal exactly like us. As said by Agnes Ryan in For the Church
Door, Wars will never cease while men still kill other animals for food, for to turn any living creature
into a roast, a steak, a chop, or any other type of meat takes the same kind of violence, the same kind
of bloodshed, and the same kind of mental processes required to change a living man into a dead
soldier. And another quote from Michael Tobias in Rage and Reason, I remember one bobcat they had
in here now bobcats are an endangered species in this neck of the woods they d caught it somewhere
and they must have put that cat through a dozen rounds of burn experiments before they finally
determined that it was utterly useless to them. Like an empty beer can. And then you know what they
did to it? Claudius was late for a lunch date so rather than put the destroyed but still breathing animal
to sleep, he picked it up by its hind legs and simply smashed its head against a wall repeatedly until it

Sigmund Freud Is Responsible For The Creation Of...
Sigmund Freud is responsible for the creation of psychoanalysis, which at the time was a new science
based on mental causes rather than the typical physical model of human behavior. Freud was the first
to infer that mental disorders could be the result of individual history rather than physical impairment
and that childhood experiences influence an individual s behavior in the future. When considering
Freud s theory of personality, there are numerous correlations that can be observed with regard to my
own childhood experiences and the actions and emotions I experience today. Freud s view on mental
energy is that the body is the source of all mental energy, mental energy is conserved due to the fact
that we have a limited amount, it is the cause for all our behavior, and the goal of our behavior is to
reduce tension. One s mental energy is invested in impulses, which drive human behavior. Freud
proposed two basic impulses: sexual impulses and aggressive impulses. Cathexis refers to the
concentration of mental energy on one particular person, idea, or object; excessive cathexis on a single
object may lead to neurosis, which is a mild psychological disorder. An example of cathexis in my
own life is when I have a week filled with exams and big projects; during this time, my mental energy
is concentrated on getting a good grade on these projects and exams; concentrating my mental energy
on the idea of getting a good grade is almost as exhausting as completing the projects

Analysis Of The Book The Lottery
Austin Walker
Erickson
English 12
20 November 2014
Blind Tradition Every society in the modern world has some form of tradition that has been passed
down from generation to generation, and no matter what the custom is, people will continue to follow
it due to the human nature to resist change. Even if there is an urge for change, it will likely be
suppressed and seen as an act of rebellion as most people follow tradition simply because that s just
how it is , and never seem to question why. Suzanne Collin s novel The Hunger Games and Shirley
Jackson s short story The Lottery best illustrate this point by showing how a violent annual tradition
affects a society and its innocent people. The Hunger Games has such uncanny similarities to The
Lottery that it almost seems as if Collins used Jackson s story as a source of inspiration for her novel.
Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery are extremely similar thematically in the sense that
sheepishly following tradition can often be detrimental to society because it can lead to adverse
consequences such as death, ignorance, and a society with no desire to change. Although both works
are very much identical, the primary distinguishing characteristics are the setting and tone. The
Lottery takes place in a small village with about three hundred inhabitants, while The Hunger Games
involves a much larger post apocalyptic world consisting of thirteen districts known as Panem. In The
Lottery , the introduction presents itself

The topic for same sex marriage is a very emotional and spicey topic. Marriage is a beautiful
ceremony to celebrate the unity of two becoming one. However, when we put aside emotions from

do something that most of us rarely do. Allow me to persay you to consider the other accuracy of the
other side when it come to same sex marriage. That is can you for a few minutes go against what you
believe?
Medical benefits and taxes vary in the situation between male and female couples and same sex
couples. Income taxes will be increased to make up for marriage tax benefits of same sex couples.
Male and female couples get less taxes to be able to have they money to stabilize the family. Same sex
couples can t reproduce so they have more taxes due to the lack of not needing as much money and
and not being able to help increase the population. Medical insurance premiums will rise to offset
offset the high cost associated with same sex behavior. The male and female couples have less bills
and expenses. However, same sex couples deal with more medical issues. Such as, colon cancer,
fertility treatment and ect. Same sex couples have to give up many benefits male and female couples

Partition Of Antarctica
Committee on the Partition of Antarctica (CPA)
Partition of Antarctica
Australia
Antarctica, the southernmost continent and site of the South Pole, is a virtually uninhabited, ice
covered land mass. Since first being sighted during a Russian voyage in 1820, Antarctica has remained
completely devoid of civilian settlements for over a century due to its unwelcoming and virtually
inhospitable climate. At the time of its discovery 98% of the continent was blanketed by dense
continental ice sheets. Little has changed as time has passed, and with temperatures recorded as low as
negative 130 degrees Fahrenheit, winds up to 200 miles an hour, and an average precipitation of only
6.5 inches annually, Antarctica remains the harshest continent on Earth ... Show more content on

The United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, and Norway recognize Australia s claim. Australia first
gained its claim as a part of the British Empire, and retained the claim when it gained independence
from the UK. Unfortunately, India and China have grown hungry for resources in the region,
especially in the Australian territory, the Australian government feels that the territory that it has
administered for over a century is being threatened. Following the disturbing drought Australia faced
between the years 2001 and 2012, Australia enjoyed nearly a decade of abundant precipitation. A
drought saw the end of the age of prosperity caused by this precipitation. The drought, lasting until the
late 2030 s, crippled the Australian economy, sharply cutting off population growth, and forced
Australia to become a major food importer, as many of its crops failed. Though precipitation levels
have returned to normal for now, but Australia fears another drought is inevitable, and looks to
strengthen its ability to continue to import food. Water rationing, enforced during the drought, is
extremely unpopular, and faces strong public opposition. The lack of water and the consequent food
shortages have sparked small pockets of hunger, but aid from the UK and US have managed to curb
any widespread starvation for now. The Australian claim on Antarctica is exactly what the nation
needs to continue its ability to import food without unbalancing its export and import levels. The
possible economic resources lying dormant in Antarctica would be of great benefit to Australia, since
the development and export of these resources would ease the economic burden posed by importing a
greater portion of its food. Besides the resources hidden within the land, the waters surrounding
Antarctica are especially appealing to Australia, since the large schools of fish that are available for
harvest would be under Australian

Marxist View On The Importance Of Being Ernest
Viewing the play of The Importance of Being Earnest from a feminist perspective portrays the men in
the Victorian Era to be misogynistic. A perpetuated stereotype in this play is that women should be
protected from the truth. Jack:[In a very patronizing manner] My dear fellow, the truth isn t quite the
sort of thing one tells to a nice, sweet, refined girl. What extraordinary ideas you have about the way
to behave to a woman (29)! The belief that women are fragile and unable to handle anything serious is
present. Furthermore, when Algernon discovers that Cecily is convinced that they had met before and
had had many romantic encounters, she is presented as mentally insane. This perpetuates the belief
that women depend on men and could not be satisfied without one in their life. In addition to this,
Gwendolen and Cecily are the ones being deceived by Jack and Algernon. This shows that women are
stereotypically submissive to men and can be taken advantage of. Through evaluating The Importance

While those of the Victorian upper class were usually the most refined and intelligent, Wilde portrays
them as ignorant and dense. One of the most well described ladies, Miss Prism, is shown to be the
least aware. The most cultivated of ladies, and the very picture of respectability (63). She is ultimately
the most absent minded and leaves baby Jack in a handbag in a cloak room of a major railway station.
Through Miss Prism, Wilde is able to propagandize the intelligence the aristocrats usually embody. In
addition to this, Wilde refutes the morality of the Victorian elite. The main two characters, Jack and
Algernon, are deceptive and are rarely seen to have any morals. Reviewing this play with a
sociological/Marxist perspective provides insight on how Wilde wants others to perceive the elite of

Human And Human Differences In Humans
In Humans as well as other species we can see some obvious differences between males and females.
Differences such as the development of a penis or vagina, muscle mass, body size, the distribution of
fat and the amount of distribution of body hair are all the differences that can be observed in Humans.
These differences are a result of a long chain of events that begin during the early phases of
embryology. It Involves Complex interaction between the environment and gene expression.
Chromosomes
Being male or female is determined in stages beginning at fertilization when the sex chromosomes
carried by the sperms meet the egg. Females have XX chromosomes and Males have XY
chromosomes. Having XX females and XY males provides a genetic framework for developmental
events that eventually give us Male or female appearance. The formation of reproductive structures we
see in Males and females depend on several factors, this includes gene action and interaction within
the embryo. Interactions with other embryos that may be in the uterus. As mentioned this process is
not straightforward, having XX and XY does not always mean that individual is either male or female.
The outcome depends on the distribution of genes on the X and Y chromosome. All eggs that are
produced by females carry the X chromosomes, in males about half of the mature sperms curry the X
chromosomes. An egg that is fertilized by a sperm that has the X chromosomes will have XX Zygote
and will develop into a female

Alexis De Tocqueville Equality
Alexis De Tocqueville made many keen observations about America from a European perspective. He
begins by stating that Americans have mistakenly believed that with equality we can have freedom,
and that with democracy we can have liberty. America passes laws and makes decisions based on
majority rule; consequently, because of this, we may never have true equality or democracy. For
example, slavery was considered legal for hundreds of years in the United States. This is because a
majority of the people in the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches of government were upper
class white men. There may have been equality for white men, but there was never true equality
during this period of time. The rights of slaves, women, and immigrants were ... Show more content

11, 1956). In regards to personal expression, Tocqueville thought that democracy took away from
individuality. As the number of groups of people gaining equality increases, we have begun to take on
more pride in that equality and sameness. Incidentally, we, as Americans, have begun to concentrate
less on our individuality. ...every citizen, being assimilated to all the rest, is lost in the crowd, and
nothing stands conspicuous but the great and imposing image of the people at large (Hofner and
others, p. 11, 1956). When examining this quote, one should look to the Native Americans as a prime
example. White settlers strongly desired the Native s land in order to fulfill Manifest Destiny. In order
to acquire the land, Native Americans were forcibly made to live on reservations. They were made to
operate like the majority at the time, white farmers. Settlers wanted the Indians to assimilate in this
fashion; only when they assimilated could the Natives even consider to become American citizens. A
myriad of native cultures was lost and many Indians became the spitting image of small white

  • 2. Levi Strauss Levi Strauss at Home and Abroad As one attempts to assess the business ethics of Levi Strauss and Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of conduct that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with the parameters of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work conditions is an ethical behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social responsibility). Obviously, it s very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad companies boosting profits from lower labor costs via exploiting foreign workers in sweatshops . I am going to take a much broader approach here in my assessment, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now able to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will be repaid when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two protagonists in this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in hand, and a reasonable person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has allowed and promoted unchecked outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate giants and their respective behaviors here. Do these two corporations have a responsibility to monitor the conduct of the companies they do business with in particular, their contractors and suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view of corporate social responsibility, I believe that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this outsourcing is legal, and despite the mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these two companies of all of the blame I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. Levi Strauss overall has conducted itself with far greater corporate social responsibility than Nike has, in my judgment. Strauss for many years withdrew from China due to their notoriety as a non democratic country with abusive labor conditions. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas The purpose of this essay is to analyze one of the more popular and well known poems written by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. The poem relates to the shortness of life and the inevitability of death that should not be easily accepted, which was a common theme for Dylan Thomas. This is ironic given the poet s early death from a drunken binge in New York City while he was visiting the United States as part of a tour in which he recited his poems to adoring fans. Thomas powerful message is contained in the form of a villanelle. The villanelle is a highly structured poem which makes use of a great deal of repetition in its standard nineteen lines. The first five stanzas are tercets while the sixth and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Loss of one s faculties can make life seem unbearable but Thomas wants his father to focus on life s positive aspects and not dwell on the negativity. In the sixth and final stanza, Thomas speaks to his father directly, having finished his four examples of men who fight death ( And you, my father, there on that sad height ). Thomas implores his father on the precipice of death to speak ill or good, as long as it is done with passion ( Curse, bless me know with your fierce tears, I pray ). The poet realizes passion may stave off death. He also hopes his father might identify with the four types of men cited in the poem as Thomas apparently viewed his father as an intelligent and decent, but very ill, free spirit. Of course, Thomas message isn t meant only for his father. It is normal to have regrets late in life. It is not uncommon for people to give up hope and look upon death as a welcome prospect. Yet Thomas realizes that life is better than death, which is the ultimate destroyer of hope in this life. The poet also reminds us to seize the day and make the most of whatever time we have. The issue Thomas addresses in his poem can be a very difficult one which all of us may face at some point. Choosing life over death can be especially difficult for the terminally ill. Their plight can have a dramatic effect on family members and other loved ones who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Story Of An Hour Setting Essay Uses of Setting in The Story of an Hour Setting plays an extremely important role in all stories as a device to help create the situation characters are in, but sometimes the setting itself tells a story. Within Kate Chopin s The Story of an Hour the setting is used to not only reveal the feelings Louise Mallard has about her marriage, but also Victorian era marriages as a whole. The Story of an Hour is a short story about a woman who was told her husband was dead. People are expecting a reaction of grief from her, due to the fact that those around her believe she is a perfect Victorian housewife. However, she can t help but feel the weight of the world lifted off of her shoulders as her obligations to her marriage are finally coming to an end. Through Kate Chopin s use of limited setting with Mrs. Mallard s room, the staircase, and the window of this house, an idea of Victorian Era marriages is displayed. Mrs. Mallard s room, being one of the three locations in this short story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mallard feels, but also attempts to reveal wives view of marriage during the time period. The staircase is where Victorian era norms were affecting Louise s reactions and displayed self. In the beginning of this short story, after she hears about her husband s supposed death, Chopin writes, She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister s arms (1). While Mrs. Mallard is on the staircase she always keeps her true feelings to herself and shows a fake version which adheres to the norms that not only her sister but also her husband s friend are expecting of her. This is shown later in the story when it is revealed to the reader that she actually was not happy with her marriage and was excited to hear of her husband s death. Chopin uses the staircase to represent a place where other s opinions affect how women at the time acted, alluding to the societal norms of the Victorian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Long-Term Consequences Of Children In The Culture Of... In today s society, children are immersed in the culture of competition. This can be seen in all aspects of children lifestyles: games, sports, classroom settings, etc. Competition can be healthy in moderation, but too often children are only taught to win. However, the long term consequences of such a competitive culture are seldom thought of by parents. Placing too much emphasis on winning can destroy a child s view on hard work and team play, as well as destroy self esteem and confidence later on in life. In our society, competition is not beneficial for kids and must be discouraged, or we risk raising a generation grown on false hope. Hard work and team play are often aspects of a child s life that are diminished with the overemphasis on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People argue that in order for our children to learn to succeed in life, we must train them from an early age. Matt Richtel s New York Times article mentions this. Many scholars agree that competition is necessary, ingrained and essential (Richtel, 2012). To some degree, this is true. We do need to train children to excel in all that they are capable of doing. However, if we were to allow for competition to be a part of the everyday lives of children, we must allow for it to occur only for self improvement. If we allow for competition, we must make it okay for them to lose. A platform for trial and error is necessary training. Sadly, not everyone has that mindset, and winning is the goal. We can t change everyone s mind about it, so we must work to discourage childhood competition altogether. In Competition Can Be a Positive Experience for Kids, Mark Cinelli analyzes the dynamics of competition, and states the type of competition that we need to see in Competition is a big part of our children s lives, and it s here to stay for a long time . . . We need to praise every effort by character, self esteem, a competitive spirit and a sense of fair play. I think we d all agree that if our children displayed all of the above attributes throughout their lives, we would be extremely proud parents. (Cinelli, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Designing A Contractor Management System For A Site Expansion Design Deficiencies The following report answers questions on design deficiencies. It will describe three design disasters and examine the causes of the disaster and the impact they had on future designs. It will then discuss a design and layout case study and the setting up of a contractor management system for a site expansion. Tacoma Bridge Collapse Brief Description of the Disaster The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (aka Galloping Gertie ) was opened to traffic on July 1, 1940 and was built to link Tacoma to the Gig Harbour. The Tacoma Bridge was built with a light design which made it very sensitive to high winds. It lacked the ability to resist the winds but rather swayed and vibrated with the wind direction (Britton, n.d.). Due the harmonic phenomena, the swaying of the bridge worsened (Britton, n.d.). Four months after the opening of the bridge on November 7, 1940, there was a 70 kilimeter per hour wind storm around the bridge area. The wind caused the bridge to sway and vibrate turbulently from side to side, until it eventually tore the bridge apart (Britton, n.d.). Cause of the Disaster The cause of the incident was as result of the structure of the bridge which could not resist the wind. Rather than resist the wind directional flow, it let the wind pass through it (Britton, n.d.). As a result, the combined force of the winds and the internal stress in the bridge structure was far too great for what the bridge could withstand, leading to its self destruction (Britton, ... Being part of a first generation Canadian family, my family s immigration history is still very recent. However, the decision to come to Canada was not one made in an instant, several historic forces influenced my family s arrival to North America. To begin with, my grandmother, being part of my primary family, left her ancestral home in Lahore, Pakistan to come to India due to the Partition of India and Pakistan which had caused mass migration, religious conflict and she ultimately ended up in Amritsar. The Sikh Massacre of 1984 caused my primary family to move from Amritsar to Hoshiarpur, Punjab because of Sikh extremists, militaristic activity and the targeting of innocent Sikh civilians. Caste also had a big impact on my family since my mother married my father due to Caste, they were discriminated against frequently and finally moved to Canada in 1995 for better opportunities. Some plays are better understood when they are read, but Arcadia is on the other end of that spectrum. Arcadia was the perfect play for us perform because we had enough actors (three of us) and Arcadia s Act II, Scene 2 felt perfect for this final. Disputes For Sweatshops Background information Diane Angeles 10E Introduction Sweatshops are exceedingly contentious for numerous reasons interrelated to human rights, greed and consumerism, feminism and environmental ethics. This segment of the proposal will briefly outline four immensely combative disputes connected to sweatshops. Human Rights Breaches There are various ways to which the operation of sweat shops breach the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) advocated by the United Nations (UN). Most sweatshop operators neglect the health and safety of their workers and often use physical abuse as a source of empowerment to force the workers to perform unreasonable amounts of labour for extremely long hours at rapid speeds. This is a direct breach to the UDHR statement which states that everyone has the right to rest leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and precious holidays with pay (Article 24). These working conditions are appalling and breach various categories of human rights. No one knows where he got lost, and it has been a mystery since then. Baby Ducky belonged to a wealthy family with the superior position in society. His father was a senator and had his chain of stores called Goosebush Store almost in every corner of the street in America. And he was so popular that when he ran for senator, he won by 99% of the vote. It was obvious for people to bring up questions about the disappearance of Ducky as he was from the famed and wealthy family. The Senator did not want his son to be introduced to the society. He always used to say that the little Ducky had to go. Thus, the most comfortable manner for him would be to kill Ducky. He recognized that people would not query him or suspect him even if he killed ducky because first of all ducky was his son and also he possessed immense wealth and the ability to serve whatever he thinks. The Sonic 1000 is a single device with full functional communication, information storage and exchange, organization, and entertainment. This case study reveals which markets Sonic should target by examining the factors influencing consumer purchasing, inspecting the variables in segmenting markets, and evaluating the attractiveness of the target markets. Consumer Purchase Influencers Cultural Culture is a major influencer in consumer purchasing. These factors are often inherent in our values and decision processes (4 major factors that influence consumer buyer bahaviour, n.d.). A person s values are instilled on them by family, teachers, and other key people throughout their life. In most societies, there is social stratification or social classes. Those who share the same social class share similar values and behavior and have distinct product and brand preferences (Kotler and Keller, 2012, p. 153). • 20. Taking a Look at Cholera Cholera is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. An infection from this bacterium, if not treated soon, can cause serious illness or even death within hours of contracting the infection¹. Vibrio cholerae infects the large intestine, causing extreme cases of diarrhea in which an individual has the potential to die within hours of developing symptoms due to dehydration. Symptoms of the disease include rapid heart rate, hypotension, and dry mucous membranes². The cholera virus infects mainly humans, but rare cases were also found in other mammals, such as dogs and bison. The bacterium that causes cholera is mainly found in places where a main source for drinking water is contaminated with fecal matter³. Cholera is estimated to affect about 3 through 5 million people annually, and it causes 100,000 120,000 deaths each year as well. Symptoms for cholera typically begin to show up within 2 3 days but cases have been reported where it took upwards of 5 days for individuals to begin to feel symptoms of the disease². Cholera is reported to have originated in Russia, and then spread through means of travel and trade to other countries, including North America. There have been 6 pandemics reported across the world over the past two centuries, which is a larger number of widespread disease than most other infectious diseases⁶. • 22. Analysis Of The House By The Railroad Surname 6 Name Professor s Name Course Date The House by The Railroad Edward Hopper is a renowned American painter. In the poem the house by the Railroad, he tries to portray a picture of a house erected beside the railroad. This poem seems to bear a lot more than what its simple title indicates. He has used the railroad to emphasize the rift between the viewer s world and the picture space. The more one tries to penetrate the depths of his paintings, the more difficult it becomes. Hopper s artistic vision was in line with his view of the contemporary world and nature. This piece of art symbolizes loss that is felt when present progress leaves behind an agrarian society the central theme being the Alienation of modern life. In this picture, Victorian style house stands alone in the field. A railroad track cuts through the foreground. There is a bare sky behind the house with no secondary objects in the immediate surroundings of the building. this enables us to keenly focus on the articulation of the building and its relationship with its environment. This picture can be broken down into two basics: the house and the train line. However, this is not really what Hopper is trying to convey to us. Life in this country is made of pure isolation in nature. The presentation of the train cutting across the land conveys how the train serves those in the country different from those in the city. In the use of light to depict the mood of the situation, Hopper uses intense light ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Voting in these places is a hard fought right. Rachel Denber, Deputy Director, Europe and Central Asia Division of the Human Rights Watch organization, writes about the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and about the expectations involved. Many people immediately thought that without communism in the ex union the governments would immediately turn to democracy. Those people were wrong because communism still ruled unfortunately (Denber 1). Any entity opposing those in power was effectively countered, and in many cases imprisoned for trumped up charges. Newer politicians developed to try to swing the system towards democracy, but initially failed. Putin has surprisingly been in power for a over twenty five years with no political opposition, but fortunately there are now countries within this category that have developed their own systems of government to include democracy. • 39. The Nature Of Human Nature In George Eliot s Silas Marner In George Eliot s Silas Marner there is no character who exemplifies the realism of human nature more than Godfrey Cass. The very fabric of Godfrey s characterization begs for analysis. Through Godfrey s actions, or lack of them, and the resulting consequences of his decisions, Silas Marner becomes a novel that draws a discussion of what good naturedness means in regards to action versus passivity. Godfrey s passivity is the driving force of the novel and in true Eliot fashion, it is his passivity that makes him neither a victim, nor a villain, but puts him somewhere in between. Put forth as a fine, open faced, good natured young man, Godfrey immediately contrasts his brother Dunstan, a spiteful jeering fellow, who seemed to enjoy his drink the more when other people went dry (Eliot 23). This automatically pits one against the other simply put, as good versus bad. Dunstan mocks him for his nature, saying, I m so easy and good natured. You ll take any trouble for me, essentially throwing Godfrey s most highly praised virtue back in his face and further cementing their previous categorization (Eliot 25). Godfrey is held in high esteem after this initial introduction. Furthermore, the condition of Godfrey Cass is one of whom had felt the keen point of sorrow or remorse and whom thanks to their native human kindness even riot could never drive into brutality (Eliot 29). According to his condition, Godfrey has weathered the conditions that have caused him sorrow and remorse, rather than having caused the conditions in the first place. This sets up Godfrey s rationalization behind his passivity, and allows for the notion that simply possessing a good nature is a good enough excuse to leave his decisions to chance. Consequently, after leaving such decisions to chance, the hesitating Godfrey finds that his own downfall unequivocally rests on his own shoulders (Eliot 26). Godfrey s hesitating and passive nature is more prevalent in none other than his denial of his infant daughter, Eppie. With the introduction of his secret wife and child, Molly and Eppie respectively, Godfrey s good naturedness takes its greatest hit. While Godfrey Cass was taking draughts of forgetfulness from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I happen to be one of the ones against it. Let me give you 4 reasons why animal testing is a horrible idea. One, there are obviously ethical reasons, as well as religious reasons. Two, the idea of animal testing when we can grow artificial skins is moronic. Three, tests made on animals can lead to wrong or inconclusive results. Fourth, the scientist themselves. The religious reasons are most obvious. Buddhist are very against cruelty to any race, species, animals, people everything. As said by Ellen DeGeneres in My Point... And I Do Have One If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal that hasn t done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit s eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson s eyes and ask him if it hurts. Animals are not exactly like us. Sure they can find similarities, rabbits for eye products, apes for reactions. But we will never find an animal exactly like us. As said by Agnes Ryan in For the Church Door, Wars will never cease while men still kill other animals for food, for to turn any living creature into a roast, a steak, a chop, or any other type of meat takes the same kind of violence, the same kind of bloodshed, and the same kind of mental processes required to change a living man into a dead soldier. And another quote from Michael Tobias in Rage and Reason, I remember one bobcat they had in here now bobcats are an endangered species in this neck of the woods they d caught it somewhere and they must have put that cat through a dozen rounds of burn experiments before they finally determined that it was utterly useless to them. • 43. Sigmund Freud Is Responsible For The Creation Of... Sigmund Freud is responsible for the creation of psychoanalysis, which at the time was a new science based on mental causes rather than the typical physical model of human behavior. Freud was the first to infer that mental disorders could be the result of individual history rather than physical impairment and that childhood experiences influence an individual s behavior in the future. When considering Freud s theory of personality, there are numerous correlations that can be observed with regard to my own childhood experiences and the actions and emotions I experience today. Freud s view on mental energy is that the body is the source of all mental energy, mental energy is conserved due to the fact that we have a limited amount, it is the cause for all our behavior, and the goal of our behavior is to reduce tension. One s mental energy is invested in impulses, which drive human behavior. Freud proposed two basic impulses: sexual impulses and aggressive impulses. Cathexis refers to the concentration of mental energy on one particular person, idea, or object; excessive cathexis on a single object may lead to neurosis, which is a mild psychological disorder. An example of cathexis in my own life is when I have a week filled with exams and big projects; during this time, my mental energy is concentrated on getting a good grade on these projects and exams; concentrating my mental energy on the idea of getting a good grade is almost as exhausting as completing the projects ... • 44. Analysis Of The Book The Lottery Austin Walker Erickson English 12 20 November 2014 Blind Tradition Every society in the modern world has some form of tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, and no matter what the custom is, people will continue to follow it due to the human nature to resist change. Even if there is an urge for change, it will likely be suppressed and seen as an act of rebellion as most people follow tradition simply because that s just how it is , and never seem to question why. Suzanne Collin s novel The Hunger Games and Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery best illustrate this point by showing how a violent annual tradition affects a society and its innocent people. The Hunger Games has such uncanny similarities to The Lottery that it almost seems as if Collins used Jackson s story as a source of inspiration for her novel. Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery are extremely similar thematically in the sense that sheepishly following tradition can often be detrimental to society because it can lead to adverse consequences such as death, ignorance, and a society with no desire to change. Although both works are very much identical, the primary distinguishing characteristics are the setting and tone. The Lottery takes place in a small village with about three hundred inhabitants, while The Hunger Games involves a much larger post apocalyptic world consisting of thirteen districts known as Panem. In The Lottery , the introduction presents itself ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since first being sighted during a Russian voyage in 1820, Antarctica has remained completely devoid of civilian settlements for over a century due to its unwelcoming and virtually inhospitable climate. At the time of its discovery 98% of the continent was blanketed by dense continental ice sheets. Little has changed as time has passed, and with temperatures recorded as low as negative 130 degrees Fahrenheit, winds up to 200 miles an hour, and an average precipitation of only 6.5 inches annually, Antarctica remains the harshest continent on Earth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, and Norway recognize Australia s claim. Australia first gained its claim as a part of the British Empire, and retained the claim when it gained independence from the UK. Unfortunately, India and China have grown hungry for resources in the region, especially in the Australian territory, the Australian government feels that the territory that it has administered for over a century is being threatened. Following the disturbing drought Australia faced between the years 2001 and 2012, Australia enjoyed nearly a decade of abundant precipitation. A drought saw the end of the age of prosperity caused by this precipitation. The drought, lasting until the late 2030 s, crippled the Australian economy, sharply cutting off population growth, and forced Australia to become a major food importer, as many of its crops failed. Though precipitation levels have returned to normal for now, but Australia fears another drought is inevitable, and looks to strengthen its ability to continue to import food. Water rationing, enforced during the drought, is extremely unpopular, and faces strong public opposition. The lack of water and the consequent food shortages have sparked small pockets of hunger, but aid from the UK and US have managed to curb any widespread starvation for now. The Australian claim on Antarctica is exactly what the nation needs to continue its ability to import food without unbalancing its export and import levels. The possible economic resources lying dormant in Antarctica would be of great benefit to Australia, since the development and export of these resources would ease the economic burden posed by importing a greater portion of its food. Besides the resources hidden within the land, the waters surrounding Antarctica are especially appealing to Australia, since the large schools of fish that are available for harvest would be under Australian ... • 48. Marxist View On The Importance Of Being Ernest Viewing the play of The Importance of Being Earnest from a feminist perspective portrays the men in the Victorian Era to be misogynistic. A perpetuated stereotype in this play is that women should be protected from the truth. Jack:[In a very patronizing manner] My dear fellow, the truth isn t quite the sort of thing one tells to a nice, sweet, refined girl. What extraordinary ideas you have about the way to behave to a woman (29)! The belief that women are fragile and unable to handle anything serious is present. Furthermore, when Algernon discovers that Cecily is convinced that they had met before and had had many romantic encounters, she is presented as mentally insane. This perpetuates the belief that women depend on men and could not be satisfied without one in their life. In addition to this, Gwendolen and Cecily are the ones being deceived by Jack and Algernon. • 49. Human And Human Differences In Humans In Humans as well as other species we can see some obvious differences between males and females. Differences such as the development of a penis or vagina, muscle mass, body size, the distribution of fat and the amount of distribution of body hair are all the differences that can be observed in Humans. These differences are a result of a long chain of events that begin during the early phases of embryology. It Involves Complex interaction between the environment and gene expression. Chromosomes Being male or female is determined in stages beginning at fertilization when the sex chromosomes carried by the sperms meet the egg. Females have XX chromosomes and Males have XY chromosomes. Having XX females and XY males provides a genetic framework for developmental events that eventually give us Male or female appearance. The formation of reproductive structures we see in Males and females depend on several factors, this includes gene action and interaction within the embryo. Interactions with other embryos that may be in the uterus. As mentioned this process is not straightforward, having XX and XY does not always mean that individual is either male or female. The outcome depends on the distribution of genes on the X and Y chromosome. All eggs that are produced by females carry the X chromosomes, in males about half of the mature sperms curry the X chromosomes. An egg that is fertilized by a sperm that has the X chromosomes will have XX Zygote and will develop into a female ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Alexis De Tocqueville Equality Alexis De Tocqueville made many keen observations about America from a European perspective. He begins by stating that Americans have mistakenly believed that with equality we can have freedom, and that with democracy we can have liberty. America passes laws and makes decisions based on majority rule; consequently, because of this, we may never have true equality or democracy. For example, slavery was considered legal for hundreds of years in the United States. This is because a majority of the people in the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches of government were upper class white men. There may have been equality for white men, but there was never true equality during this period of time. The rights of slaves, women, and immigrants were ... In order to acquire the land, Native Americans were forcibly made to live on reservations. They were made to operate like the majority at the time, white farmers.
