Collapse of a Section of the Tunnel Near Heathrow Airport
On the 21st October 1994 saw, what was described as, one of the worst civil engineering disasters in
the United Kingdom in the last twenty five years . Balfour Beatty, the contractor in charge of a part of
the £440 million project to build a part of the tunnel for the Heathrow Express train in the CTA
(Central Terminal Area), were five years later charged with a fine of £1.2 million plus, £100,000 worth
of prosecution costs for the collapse of a section of the tunnel near Heathrow Airport and seventy five
meters away from a section of the Piccadilly line tunnel. Geoconsult, an expert designer of Balfour
Beatty s for the NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) were also fined by the Old Bailey Criminal
Crown Court £500,000 plus £100,000 for prosecution costs.
The main reasons for the severity of the prosecution for Balfour Beatty were the failure in ensuring
safety for their employees throughout construction of the NATM station tunnels, and failing to ensure
safety of the general public, by exposing them to unnecessary danger. Geoconsult were fined mainly
due to the lack of technical supervision of the works being carried out.
Outline of project
Balfour Beatty were given a contract worth £60 million in order to build roughly nine kilometres of
tunnel and numerous NATM tunnels with two underground stations at Terminal 4 and the CTA.
Balfour Beatty s £60 million contract was part of the total estimated £440 million for the whole of the
Heathrow Rail Link Project. Geoconsult,

Investigating The Performance Of A Whitworth Quick Turn...
MACHINE QUICK RETURN MECHANISM 2.1 Objective The objective of this experiment is to
investigate the performance of a whitworth quick turn motion and to verify that the motion does have
a quick return stroke and a slow cutting or forward stroke. 2.2 Theory Definition of a mechanism
Mechanisms are a simplified model, usually in the form of a line diagram, which is used to reproduce
exactly the motion occurring in a machine. The purpose if this reproduction is to enable the nature of
the motion to be investigated without the encumbrance of the various solid bodies which forms the
machine elements. 2.3 Whitworth s quick return mechanism WHITWORTH S MECHANISM The
above diagram shows the mechanism as used on the apparatus. Link 1 on the top diagram is extended
to point A. attach to point A is another link with pivot. The other end of this link terminated in a slider.
In a machine tool where this mechanism is used the cutting tool is attached to this slider. The link
POA rotates about an O. The mechanism is driven by crank PC which rotates at about C with constant
velocity. The slider at P slides along POA as the crank is turned. Its path is shown by the dashed circle,
centered on C and through P. Clearly when P is at P1 the slider S is at the outer extremity of its travel
.When P is at P2 the slider S is at the inner extremity of its travel. Now as PC rotates with constant
velocity the time taken to go from P1 to P2 is less than that taken to go from P2 to P1. However

Summary Of Plunkitt Of Tammany Hall
The book Plunkitt of Tammany Hall can leave readers with mixed feelings about politics from Plunkitt
s perspective. Plunkitt, himself, used some questionable tactics while he was a politician and defends
what he did; such as the difference between honest graft and dishonest graft. Plunkitt lived in the
world of politics for forty plus years and thrived in the middle of it all with his political machine,
Tammany Hall. The views Plunkitt held differ from those of the Founding Fathers of the United States
of America. Politics was a word that was used flippantly in Plunkitt s vocabulary. To him, being a
politician and living in the world of election and re election was all a game. He used his status as a
politician to gain power, money, and influence on the people surrounding him. An example of Plunkitt
using his status to gain money can be found in the first chapter of the book. I see my opportunity and I
take it. I go to that place and I buy up all the land I can in the neighborhood. Then the board of this or
that makes its plan public, and there is a rush to get my land, which nobody cared particular for
before. Ain t it perfectly honest to charge a good price and make a ... Show more content on

Plunkitt seems to have a utopia planned for the entire City of New York; for it to become an oligarchy
under the careful watch and guidance of the political machine, Tammany Hall. Plunkitt describes how
no one, but the Tammany Hall leaders, would have to worry about anything if New York became its
own state. Plunkitt even references President Abraham Lincoln, saying the government of Tammany
Hall is one that Lincoln would have blessed. Plunkitt continues to talk about how he would do
everyone a favor by helping them until he believes they can stand on their own two feet. To show what
he means, he uses the analogy of how the federal government is looking after and helping the

detainees once they disappeared into the hundreds of secret detention centers known as pits and black
holes . Aside from spreading confusion among guerrilla organizations, planting fear in Argentine
society, destroying incriminating evidence, and misleading world opinion, the disappearances also
served as a remembrance of the Dirty War . The armed forces did their best to influence national
memory by impressing, the dirty war had been a legitimate antirevolutionary war against a guerrilla
insurgency supported by Cuba and the Soviet Union. The military supported their actions by stating
that, the military had put Argentina on the right track, they had halted the political disintegration,
stimulated the economy, and combated corruption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Torture and disappearances were not officially sanctioned, but were the inevitable excesses of war.
The statements from the Junta failed to convince the Argentine people not only because they knew that
it was false, but because the fate of the disappeared was of an overarching public concern. The
meaning of a disappeared as someone alive yet missing changed into someone dead yet unaccounted
for. Unlike in the case of the Holocaust, where the absence of proof of the death of millions of
concentration camps, the Argentine dirty war lacked such open ideological framework and visible
infrastructure of mass murder. The Argentine military always denied having the disappeared in secret
detention and thus nurtured a hope among relatives that was hard to abandon. Furthermore, the
political reality of an Argentina climbing out of years of authoritarianism did not allow for the public
acceptance of a presumption of death without the presence of a corpse. The continued demand for
truth demonstrates that personal and social traumas revolve around a search for the meaning of past
suffering. An individual may forget or not recall certain devastating experiences, but that does not
make the traumatic event go away. It rather pushes it to the front of

American Public Policy Chapter 1
Chapter one of American Public Policy, by B. Guy Peters, gives an in depth explanation of what
American public policy is. The definition that Peters gives of Public policy is the sum of government
activities whether pursued directly or through agents, as those activities have an influence on the lives
of citizens (4). This definition of public policy can be categorized into three levels that will make
differences in citizen s lives. The first level is policy choices. This level is when, decisions made by
politicians, civil servants, or other granted authority that are directed toward using public power to
affect the lives of the citizens (4). All of these choices that are made by the president, congressman, or
others can evolve into a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first and most fundamental division of our government is federalism or the constitutional
allocation of governmental powers between the federal and state governments (24). Throughout the
years federalism has changed from what it was first described in the constitution. Contemporary
federalism is what is used in our modern government, and with the dilemmas that we have now a more
centralized government has been used, which was not planned when our government was created. The
second division is separation of powers. This division has a major impact on public policies. The
constitution distributes the powers of the federal government among three branches, each capable of
applying checks and balances to the other two (29). These three divisions can either work together,
which makes policymaking smooth and able to get things done, or they can veto each other which
makes policymaking harder and nothing gets done. The third division is subgovernments, or can also
be described as iron triangles. This division has three actors involved the first is interest groups, the
second is congressional committees or subcommittees, and the third is the administrative agency (31
33). These actors work off each other to help get policies implemented. These three division help
compose our public policies in the United States.
Our modern government is large and complicated. Some people do not trust our government, and
there are many issues

Agent Dominic-Personal Narrative
How could this be happening? Why is this guy at McDonalds dressed in all black, from head to toe?
How does he know me, and my twin sister, we are only in 5th grade? All of these questions were
running through my head, but the one question that keeps me thinking is, How is my sister in
communication with this Agent Dominic ? After about 8 minutes of me just standing there questioning
myself, I snapped myself out of it and talked to this Agent Dominic . How do you know me? I asked
him. He replied, Well, I knew your sister not you. Yes, okay, how do you know my twin? I questioned.
You have a twin! He responded so authentically I thought he was actually telling the truth. How did

I was so happy that the conversation between Dominic and I was just a figment of my imagination.
Well, I was elated until I saw him sitting in the corner of my hospital room, still in all black, talking on
his phone. He looked so astute and important in his all black suit, that s probably why he wears it
everywhere. Why am I here? I intended my derogatory question for no one in particular because there
were several nurses in the room at the time. Oh, ladies he is awake. One of the nurses told the rest.
Um, sir, while you were at McDonald s you blacked out and suffered a minor concussion. The nurse
also explained to me that I am okay to go if I felt better. Once I stepped out of that hospital bed my
ungainly walking was a threat to the eyes; I felt so vulnerable at the time I didn t want to be seen in
public like this. I decided that saimin was my delicacy and comfort food right now, and I stayed in the
hospital bed for a few more hours as I devoured 3 bowls of saimin. Until the clean hospital smell was
just about ready to slaughter me right then and there; I was so sick and tired of the hospital that all I
wanted was my filthy, stinky, nasty

Qualities of Leadership Essay
The dictionary defines leadership as a critical management skill; it is the ability to motivate a group of
people toward a common goal. These qualities will help you develop your skills as a leader. Leaders
play a very huge role whether the task that they are taking on is big or small. The leaders face special
challenges as they try to communicate and interact with their followers and potential followers to
understand and know what they think and what they do. Leaders should know that creativity and

Banned from boxing and stripped of his title, Ali stays in the spotlight, speaking against the war. He
always said what he felt. Ali made comments about the war they were said to be unpatriotic and if he

so they cancelled the fight. He did not believe in wars so he was not going to support them. He
showed leadership in standing up for what he thought was right. His boldness made him stand out in
the crowd he spoke his mind and did not care what anybody else thought and that made him a great
example to look up to and to follow. On April 28, 1968 the Houston induction ceremony took place.

Comparing News Networks In ABC, CNN, CBS, And Fox
The public get their news from networks such as ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, and Fox. One of
the differences between all these networks is all of the networks get fairly amount of viewers from
which many of the most popular in the country like to go from right or left. CNN, ABC, CBS, and
NBC have audiences that lean left while the audience on fox lean toward conservative. Another one is
the if these networks are being truthful or if what their telling the audience is fake. A poll by
Rasmussen declared that CNN is the least trusted news network on cable television (Tapson 1). The
poll also showed that Fox news was trusted at fifty percent and MSNBC was trusted by forty three
percent (Tapson 1). One network will telling a viewer how a certain person may have done something

Dennis Ashwell s Life In Vietnam
It was the summer of Vietnam, The Grateful Dead, and free love. Nothing made sense, and the cultural
landscape around the world was smashed into pieces. It was a world in flux, a world awash in a
tsunami of what was and what could be. In June of 1697 dissatisfaction reached a head ushering in a
new era of rambunctious youth that had enough of the status quo. Dennis Ashwell was no different
despite his background. He hailed from a penthouse in New York overlooking Central Park. He went
to good schools and got good grades. He went to cocktail parties hosted by his mother in swanky
hotels, and hobnobbed with his father at political events, fully realizing he served as a shining beacon
of how young adults should act. At 18, he was accepted and went to Harvard. ... Show more content

He had no car, $102, and a backpack of clothes and books. He took buses until he ran out of money
somewhere between Arkansas and Texas. Then he went on route 66 and jutted out his thumb. He met
his fair share of creeps and weirdos, but the majority were friendly and his journey uneventful. His
one mistake was falling asleep in the back of a lumber pickup truck and winding up in Mendocino
Beach, 200 miles away from where he wanted to go. Lumbering back onto the highway he stuck out
his thumb once again and waited. He waited until one night a large VW bus slowed down. The bus
was large, almost like a truck, and was painted a cacophony of bright colors. Out of the bus appeared a
short man with crazy hair and battered clothing his eyes wild and his jaw clenching and unclenching.

The Role Of Playing Game ( Mmorpg )
Runescape is one of the first massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that many
gamers have started with. Released in 2001, there were no games like it out there for its time. For
many of us gamers, Runescape was the beginning of an amazing journey. The game was free to play
on your web browser, no download necessary. Once your account was created you were able to start
your adventure in the exploration of Runescape, there is no better game you can get lost in. Runescape
is the missing piece of achievement, adventure, and connection that you are searching for. The concept
of the game was revolutionary from the questing to the combat system. Players would have complete
control on what they wanted to do. There was a ray of activities such as what type of combat, crafting,
merchanting, cooking, mining, hunting, and many others. With each milestone you hit a player would
feel a sense of accomplishment. The longer it took to reach that goal the more satisfying it was. This
sense of achievement was what all of us craved. For many players this system of gameplay at this
level was never seen before. We were used to the console games such as Zelda or Super Mario that
had a set storyline to follow and a goal to reach, once completed the game was over. Unlike the typical
game of the time Runescape was a never ending story. There was always something to achieve and
conquer within the game setting it apart from Zelda and Super Mario. Each day there is always

Dear Capulet, my deepest condolences. I would like to take full responsibility for the death of sweet
Juliet. I regret agreeing to marry her and Romeo but when she came to me she was desperate. After
Romeo was banished and Juliet had her marriage to Paris approaching, Juliet wanted nothing to do

lives together. The plan I had made to fake her death and have Romeo find her when she woke up,
seemed like a good plan at the time. If I could do it over I would. I would have never agreed to marry

Women From the Old Testament
The Old Testament shows many examples of the roles of women throughout the course of time.
Throughout the Old Testament women rights and roles have changed dramatically from the time of
Eve when she appeared to of had her rights stolen, to the time Ruth used her rights to marry a kin after
being a widow, and the time of Bathsheba when she was instructed to do so instead of being asked.
Their rights throughout the Old Testament have not been set at a constant in fact their rights through
the Old Testament vary depending on what your status was. Comparing the roles of Eve, Ruth, and

During the story Eve was persuaded by a serpent to eat the fruit for the tree in which God told them
not to eat from. Eve then persuaded Adam to do the same deed. When they told God their sins, God
was mad that Eve spoke of the behalf of the both of them (Genesis 3:17). They were both ordered to
leave the garden, but the punishments He gave Eve put her on a lower pedestal than her husband. By
increasing pregnancy pains bringing forth children and her desires will be to please her husband by

God said Eve was to be a helper which by definition means sustainer, supervisor, or babysitter; not a

David spotted Bathsheba while on his roof and ordered his men to go and find her and bring her to

Being the largest online trading company, eBay has launched websites across the world, including
thirty other countries in addition to its original U.S. website. China, with its large online market, is one
of these countries. In 2003, after its cooperation with Eachnet, the first C2C online company in China,
eBay became the largest online trading company in China, controlled 90 percent of the Chinese C2C
market (Zazaian, 2006). The success continued until Taobao, a completely free online C2C platform,

Also, eBay has lowered listing fee a lot since 2005, but this didn t slow down Taobao s growth.
Therefore, free listing is not the key reason for Taobao s success. Indeed, feeling they are benefiting,
customers may even willing to pay.
Target Market
The first action for both eBay and Taobao in China is to identify their target markets. When eBay
launched in China, it identified its target customers as those well educated, familiar with the Internet,
earning a monthly payment over 3,000 RMB, and 20 40 years old (Chen et al., 2007). Indicated by
Shixiong Wu, CEO of eBay China, these mainstream customers are very important to eBay as they
help with the healthy growth of electronic market (as cited in Chen et al., 2007). On the other side of
the Chinese online market, Taobao decided to focus on Chinese customers who are between 20 and 30
years old with good education levels, after analyzing China s C2C market for four months. They
believe that in a decade, these online shoppers will become mainstream consumers who will influence
the buying habits of the whole country (Alibaba, 2006). Comparing the target markets of eBay and
Taobao, it is clear that though they all target at young people, Taobao s target market is much broader
and includes students, while eBay s target customers are professionals who have salaries. Shown by
the survey results, in 2007, student buyers made up a quarter of all customers,

Scene Of The Crime Essay
There is no hiding that the film was produced and directed by a white woman, and this is why it could
be argued that the film takes on a white savior complex, presenting Indian society as a deviant other.
Meenakshi Gigi Durham explores this idea in her essay Scene of the Crime: News discourse of rape in
India and the geopolitics of sexual assault. Following a close study of the media coverage of the rape
Durham writes, like maps, media representations are imbricated with power relations; like maps they
use language, visual imagery, and other symbols to represent the world; and like maps, they help to
orient us to our surroundings (Durham 177). Durham makes a connection to Edward Said s concept of
Orientalism, and how Occident and Orient are pitted against eachother, creating this binary
relationship where one is seen as more powerful and better than the other (Durham 178). This
relationship sustains the material injustices of imperialism and neo colonialism (Durham 178). When
analyzing the situation in this context, one could possibly begin to understand the government s
reasoning. Their apprehension of how the West and the rest of the word would perceive India as a ...

Personal Statement For Food Science
From a young age, I have always wanted to know how and why the things around me work. Science
was one of my more well liked subjects throughout my schooling years. I am able to excel in these
subjects because I have developed a strong interest in them and I enjoy the process of learning new
things. I have always wanted to go to university to study a science based subject. While browsing
through the variety of courses available in your university, I came across Food Science and it caught
my attention. That was when I knew it would be the right course for me.
I have always enjoyed baking and cooking, as a result, I often bake with my family members. This
means that I do have some prior knowledge of importance of nutritional values, convenience, safety
and shelf life of foods. Food Science has actually been integrated into our everyday lives, and that is
what makes it so appealing to me. The food industry is one of the largest industries in the world and I
am eager to be part of this important industry, researching on how to produce food that is of better
quality. Research that has previously been done by Food scientists have largely contributed to the
higher quality of life experienced in many countries today, as compared to that of previous decades.

There is another product on the market called the Micro Harvester and is much like the Minibatt

with different French research institutes to build a miniature harvester that is battery operated and

competitor to the GrainGoat. There was an article released in a farm magazine in 2005 discussing the
product. It appears as though it may not be on the market today. (Farmshow,

Imagine going on a day hike through your favorite forest. You take great pains to pack your gear,
ensure you have adequate food and water for the day. You bring your camera and other gear to ensure
you get photographs of the local forest. You visit this same place every few weeks, it is close to where
you live and the scenery is amazing. There are ample opportunities to stop to enjoy just being outside.
As you hike you enjoy the sound of nature, the rustling of the leaves as the wind blows, the sound of
small lizards as they scurry across your path, agitating dry leaves in their wake. You listen for the ...

The purpose was to create a program and coordinate assets of the federal government and state
agencies to control and minimize the economic, ecological, and human health impacts caused by
invasive species (Bergman). In addition to organizing and establishing federal policy in regards to
invaders it defines what an invasive species is. Executive Order 13112 defines an invasive species as
an alien species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or
harm to human health. Invasive species typically harm native species through predation, habitat
degradation and competition for shared resources (Cost of Invasive Species, US Fish amp; Wildlife).
By defining invasive species the order took strides to narrow the scope of non indigenous species to
those who are actively and aggressively pushing our native species out through monopolization of
resources and other tactics. This definition takes pains to, therefore, exclude non indigenous species to
the United States who are not evicting indigenous species out of their native environment rather they
are an almost welcome addition to our ecosystems. North American populations of the ring neck
pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, is a very good examples of this. They were introduced to the North
American continent from Asia through settlers however, these species failed to become aggressive
competitors to native species. Their populations remained controlled through natural predation

Essay on Victorian Era in Kate Chopin s A Pair of Silk...
During the Victorian Era women struggled to fulfill their desires and men encountered women to get
only what was necessary for the household, trying to escape from responsibility they go onto the
direction that their impulse takes them, however not for long, after a dream of having what they long
for they still have to face reality of being a wife and mother. Kate uses imagery to indicate how
women struggle to abandon their needs followed by an isolated and dreamy tone. After having the role
of being a mother and a wife, a woman expects to be apart from responsibilities and feel the lightness
of freedom. Especially after having the life of a princess and caring royal blood, ...the way in which it

When entering into a different society not everyone is able adapt to it. Ms. Sommer refers back to her
past in the time where she confronted no struggles and money was never a problem, She had never
entered its doors; from the outside she had sometimes caught glimpses of spotless damask and shining
crystal, and soft stepping waiters serving people of fashion (Chopin). Ms. Sommer is now living her
fantasy dream and making her fifteen dollars last for all her yearnings. Her fantasy is every woman s
hope, but are not able to give themselves any pleasure because of their routines and responsibility of
women in the Victorian Era. Kate applies an isolated tone to describe the shifts of Ms. Sommer and ho
she starts to think different when she has the stocking in her hand, By degrees she grew aware that her
hand had encountered something very soothing, very pleasant to touch (Chopin). After having the
inducement of softness in her hand it brings back her old memories of when she was wealthy. Kate s
tone shifts from isolated to dreamy, because at first she thought for her children, but then at last
realized that she never got anything to satisfy her own desire; therefore she starts to be selfish and
starts dreaming of what she prefers her life to be like. All her dreams fall apart

Abstract
Surface roughness has become the most significant functional requirement and it is an index of the
product quality. In order to increase the efficiency of hard to machine alloys like titanium and nickel
alloys, an Electro Chemical Honing (ECH) process has been employed to achieve highest material
removal rate with the best surface qualities. This extended abstract describes the design and
fabrication of an indigenously developed tooling setup for ECH of external cylindrical surfaces of
Titanium alloys (TI 6AL 4V) and also highlights the key process parameters and their affect on ECH
process. The influence of the machining parameters on the surface finish has been investigated and
optimized the process parameters for improving the surface roughness is also evaluated. Percentage
improvements in surface roughness values Ra and other parameters like electrolyte temperature,
composition and concentration were studied while changing the processing time (PT). And also the
study of surface characteristics of micro and macro level and micro hardness too examined.

Odyssey Club Experience
An individual wanting to meet new friends while participating in exciting activities should consider
joining the Odyssey Club. The first thing that I learned from attending the Odyssey Club meet and
greet was how to tie dye. This may seem silly, but the only time I did an activity with tie dye was
during elementary school. During the meeting, we all tie dyed shirts to help us get to know each other.
I was able to work on my shirt with a mentor of the group. I learned that each freshman in the club
would be assigned a mentor. Throughout the each, each person would meet with their mentor and
participate in some activity. In the meeting, we talked about what we will be doing within this club
and how the mentors had a great experience with it last

Madison Cablevision Case Study
While public purpose challenges are still judged by the Madison Cablevision standard today, the
Supreme Court of North Carolina has refined the doctrine s scope. To start, the court in Maready v.
City of Winston Salem addressed whether a broadly constructed state statute allowing for local
economic development could meet the Madison Cablevision standard. Further clarifying the first
prong of the Madison Cablevision standard, the court in Maready held that whether an activity is
within the appropriate scope of governmental involvement and is reasonably related to communal
needs may be evaluated by determining how similar the activity is to others which this court has held
to be within the permissible realm of governmental action. Maready ... Show more content on

State, the court further clarified the sound basic education standard constructed in Leandro. In
addressing a claim that the state had failed to provide the students of Hoke County with a sound basic
education, the court examined a series of allegations made by the school board. The state claimed that
their actions met the Leandro standard through its combination of inputs i.e., expenditures, programs,
teachers, [and] administrators, which added up to be an aggregate that met or exceeded this Court s
definition of providing students with an opportunity for a sound basic education. However, the court
disagreed, holding that the existence of these inputs was not sufficient to meet Leandro s requirement.
Instead, the court required a higher standard, holding that each classroom should be staffed with a
competent, certified, well trained teacher, and requiring that every school be led by a well trained[,]
competent principal. This decision supplemented Leandro to provide a fuller contextual understanding
of what type of education the citizens of North Carolina had a right to receive. These two holdings
provide the standard by which education is judged today.

the Salvation Army is an international charity that helps people, not only across the United States but

someone could compare it to because of its magnitude. Instead, this paper will focus on an
organization that was on the same level as the Salvation Army s as well as similar to its cause. Feeding
America is a national charity that helps to feed the hungry across the nation. However, this paper will

organizations offer similar aide to those in need and have the same goals of feeding America s hungry.

The Protection Of Human And Civil Rights
Part 1: Background
Introduction: The protection of human and civil rights, has been a long fight, one that this world has
yet to win. The battles of this war are vicious: protests to overthrow corrupt governments are noble,
but at what price? Protests and rebellions of international magnitude echo with violence and civilian
casualties. A recent example of this war has been the Arab Revolts in 2010, which devolved into the
full fledged rebellions known as the Arab Spring. The already tense situations in the Middle East and
North Africa, imploded into protests against unfair governments and pursuit of these corrupt leaders.

His story reflected, the story of the community, poor with little options, making the best he could out
of a bleak situation, only to be humiliated at the hands of the government. Because of this, it is widely
believed that the reason for such intense rebellion, stems from a deep rooted dissatisfaction with the
rule of governments, and the lack thereof of civil rights (Sadian 24). This dissatisfaction had been
surmounting for years, and as the protests grew in size and scale, the need for change became more
prominent. The protests held in Tunisia, became an example to Northern Africa and the Middle East,
leading to a wave of unrest and rebellion. The spring began as Algeria, Jordan, Egypt, and Yemen, as
well as other countries began to rebel against their own governments, seeking rights that had been
denied to them for years. In the midst of these fiery protests, several leaders such as Sudanese

Specializations of The U.S. Special Operations Teams
The U.S. Special Operations Teams are some of the toughest men in the entire world and are trained to
endure the most extreme conditions in order to be properly prepared to serve and defend our country,
The United States of America. There are three different branches of protection in The United States:
the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. Accordingly, each of these has its own tribute to the Special
Operations Forces. The Navy contributes the Navy SEALs, the Air Force provides Air Force SOCOM,
and the Army provides the Green Berets, Delta Force, and the Rangers. Each of these sectors is very
selective and secretive. The SEALs are likely the most highly trained forces out of all of the Special
Operations Units. SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land team. The SEALs must know how to do many
different things. The SEALs are commandos, which is a soldier who is in the United States Special
Operations who specializes in water landings, parachuting, and repelling down mountains. These
commandos must also know how to take down enemies while in various places including underwater,
in speedboats, helicopters, while parachuting, or by land espionage (Stanley). Their job is complicated
because they must know how to do what the Air Force Units do such as parachuting, how to deal with
explosives and hands on combat similar to that of the Army Units, along with the Navy part of the job

Influence of the Superpowers in the Middle East Conflict...
To what extent was the Middle East conflict between 1948 and 1978 fuelled by the interests and
concerns of the superpowers in the region?
During 1948 and 1978 there was massive conflict in the Middle East between Arab Muslim countries
and Jewish Israel. The conflict itself was fuelled by nationalism and religious differences and other
disputes such as the Palestinians refugee problem. During this time the superpowers got involved in
the Middle East because of the cold war. However, the superpowers involvement was noticeable by
their attempts to implement their respected influences in the Middle East to gain power with respect to
their political and economical policies of the world and become the ultimate superpower . Thus the
superpowers were involved and contributed to the conflict but in a very small way compared to
nationalism and religious differences in the Middle East.

quot;The Raven quot;
Edgar Allen Poe s journey into the realm of death, fear and the macabre, The Raven is an exploration
into the loneliness and despair associated with the loss of a loved one. Through the clever use of
rhyme, meter, imagery, symbolism and word choice, Poe catapults us into a world of sinister images,
morbid predilections and unearthly machinations. We are, at once, submerged in the pulsing, driving
force of supernatural fear as only Poe is able to create. And with every use of the haunting refrain
Nevermore, upon which the chilling cadence of this poem is built, Poe transforms a story steeped in
remorse and sorrow into a tale of preternatural mystery and suspense.
The first, and most powerful literary device that Poe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the use of the alliteration weak and weary , in addition to the internal rhyme of dreary and weary
, we are instantly struck by the tone of the poem as being one of loneliness, grief and depression.
In the second stanza, we are more fully enlightened to the setting from which these emotions stem.
With the use of such phrases like bleak December and dying ember , Poe conveys the speakers
internal state with the use of external clues. In both cases, the word choice seems to transmit feelings
of isolation and misery from which the speaker wishes to find relief. And, it is here that we are first
introduced to the reason for his sorrow, his lost love Lenore. It is from this base of raw emotion and
desolate misery that the poem garners speed and evolves.
Poe s use of symbolism is another potent tool with which he imparts the meaning and depth of the
poem. First and foremost, we must decipher the significance and implication of the raven itself. The
embodiment of death, the bird signifies the very issue with which the speaker is grappling. In the
suggestion that the bird has come from the Night s Plutonian shore, Poe calls upon the myth of Pluto,
the God of the Underworld, the land of the dead in Greek mythology. The Raven, therefore, may be
thought of as a creature from the land of the dead. The corresponding relevance of this in the poem is
that his loss and grief have taken on a living and

Structure Of The Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln was president of the United States and in office during the Civil War, during this
war the North and South were at odds and much blood was shed. The Battle of Gettysburg was
particularly gruesome, but none the less a major win for the Union. Immediately after the battle,
Lincoln was invited to speak on behalf of all fallen soldiers and on the victory that the Union so
desperately needed. The Gettysburg Address motivated the American people to persevere and continue
fighting the Confederacy in order to free the slaves and make the country whole again. An address
such as this one gave the broken down people of America new hope, a fire once again lit in their hearts
to continue and push on. The Gettysburg Address not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only did this device provoke sympathy from the citizens, but it also rekindled their want to fight
and persevere for those who do not have a voice and for those who lost their lives protecting the belief
that all men are equal. It is clear that Lincoln is using this device when he states, A final resting place
for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live . A touching statement such as this one
appeals to the human side of the audience members, thus causing them to feel as if it is their duty to
continue with high spirits in such a treacherous war. Another rhetorical device employed by Lincoln is
his use of inclusive language. For instance, the continuous utilization of the word we , was no mistake.
This is meant to create a sense of unity and camaraderie between all people in the United States, not
just the Confederacy or the Union. In order to sufficiently motivate and uplift the American people
Lincoln used these persuasive techniques. One can obviously see how this has paid off by how highly
regarded the speech still is over 150 years later.
Lincoln not only uses pathos to ensure that his point is understood but he also uses the rhetorical
device anaphora. Anaphora is the repetition of the same words or phrase at the beginning of a
sentence. Evidence of anaphora can be seen in lines 9 and 10 of The Gettysburg Address, we can not

average of 65 days. Finally, Sears Holdings quick ratio is .20, which indicates potential for a liquidity

the opportunities for SHDL to explore is to expand in to other nations, particularly emerging markets.
Another opportunity is to expand is to accelerate the growth of SHLD s ecommerce programs, which
only represents 3% of its revenues, especially as the industry is slowly shifting from brick and mortar
to brick and click format. Lastly, SHLD has an opportunity to lease floor space out to companies who
can increase traffic into the store. Threats One threat to SHLD is its competition with many retailers
because it is not very differentiated from its competitors and lacks brand loyalty, thus nothing is
stopping the customer from overlooking Sears and visiting a rival retailer. Another threat is a

Importance Of Mechanics Lien
If you ve ever had a mechanics lien placed on your property you know that it has nothing to do with
your car or the mechanic that you use for auto repairs. But if you ve never heard much about this
particular legal maneuver, you ll agree with most of the people who find themselves in a similar
position: the name is what makes the mechanics lien so confusing; they are actually most often used
by subcontractors and suppliers. It s a legal claim against a property that has been improved or
remodeled in some way. For example, you may decide to remodel the entryway of your property,
installing all new lighting, raising the ceiling, knocking out a wall, adding an arch, installing a skylight
and replacing the flooring. You hire a contractor to handle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you don t see the logic behind the mechanics lien there are two matters that you probably aren t
taking into consideration. First, at a fundamental level, the law assumes that between the person who
ordered all new lighting for their house and the electrician who placed the order and fronted the cash,
the electrician s need to be paid is probably greater. Second, the law presumes that you as the owner
who paid the contractor for the job in full can simply respond to this situation by suing the general
contractor. This is true, but there s still a big problem to deal with immediately. When a mechanics
lien is placed, you may have days or months to pay what is owed the subcontractor or the property can
be sold to satisfy the debt. In comparison, you can sue the general contractor, but obtaining the money
from this direction will probably be a long process.
How can you avoid the problems that come with mechanics liens?
1. Pay for the work being done with joint checks. Offering a series of checks made out jointly to the
general contractor and subcontractors working on the job is a good way to ensure that everyone gets
paid. Joint checks can only be cashed if the ultimate beneficiary endorses it, which helps ensure that
subcontractors and suppliers are paid.
2. Obtain a lien waiver. You can instruct your general contractor to obtain lien waivers from all
suppliers and subcontractors working on the job and that the general contractor will be responsible

Sextus Empiricus, St. Augustine
In this paper the following principles and concepts of morality in the perspective of Sextus Empiricus,
St. Augustine and Plato will be examined. St. Augustine is attempts to induce that if God made human
being in his image then why is there so much suffering and destruction. One of Sextus Empiricus
theories is that there is no correct or incorrect way of living because each culture perceives the world
differently. Plato is trying to persuade people that knowledge cannot come from our senses because
our senses are constantly changing. According to Christianity all human beings were made in God s
image with the ability of having free will. So humans have the ability to choose right or wrong and
this is part of the knowledge that God gave to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore that s why St. Augustine would say evil couldn t derive from teaching because teaching is
good. In true teaching or knowledge there is no evil there because education is good and positive
according to St. Augustine. So where does evil come from and who is responsible for that? If God
made humans and a lot of people do sin and evil why don t people blame God. But God cant be the
source of evil because God is good and he can t do evil. If something is evil because it is illegal, that
means then the law determines what is evil and what is not evil. Evil and good can t depend on laws;
the law does not determine what is good or evil. Thrasymachus in Plato dialogue would disagree
because there is no good or evil. Good and evil is just what society determines to be good and evil
based on the law it makes. Maybe evil is what people don t like what is done to them. So if someone
does not want to be killed then it s evil to kill. Evil does not happen in the action it happens in the
thought and in the desire. Just because we lust for something by that just wanting to do it is considered
to be evil. Perhaps then lust is the evil element

Comparison Of Angelas Ashes And Angela s Ashes
Finally, both novels display the effects of living in these situations as well as the similar methods in
which people cope with the hardships in life. Alcoholism affects characters in both novels, specifically
Frank McCourt s father, Malachy, and Dickens tragic hero, Sydney Carton. In Angela s Ashes, one of
the constant sources of their misfortunes is Malachy McCourt. Though he cares for his family, as
evident in his strong relationship with his sons and love for their mother, he continuously drinks away
the family s money for food and other basic necessities for life, spending long nights at pubs and

at the pub and tell everyone, your father is drinking the money for the baby... there isn t a scrap of

family, money wise as well as emotionally. Malachy is unable to change for his family as the alcohol
has already taken over his life and he relies on it to cope, for example when his infant daughter passes
away. In A Tale of Two Cities, Sydney Carton is also reliant on alcohol and spends a lot of time drunk,
though he does not have a family or anyone to take care of. He drinks because he feels as though his
life is already wasted and he loathes himself for it. One night, he

Romanov Family Essay
No matter what age I am, history has always been my favorite subject. It s a story that I can immerse
myself completely in. It s so interesting to me how one action can change the future so much. Looking
back, it s no surprise to me how my deep fascination with the ill fated Romanov family of Russia
came to be. In eighth grade during world history we read about how the family was shot one by one
the basement, and the conspiracies of the possible escape of Anastasia Romanov, the youngest
daughter of Tsar Nicholas. This immediately piqued my interested and the meager textbook did not
satisfy my quench to know more. I still can vividly remember coming home that day and running
straight to my mom s dated laptop and printing out article after article ... Show more content on

Thus far, I have read close to a dozen books about the family and have been able to read various
conspiracy theories (all untrue in my humble opinion, but very interesting) about the possibility of a
family member escaping in the chaos of their murder, etc. This obsession four years in the making has
taught me that if something piques your interest, you should dig deeper and dedicate time to quench
your thirst for more. Surprisingly, I have formed many relationships or created great conversation with
total strangers because of the Romanov family. I will never forget the day last year I was at Starbucks
during winter break reading a book about the time when the Romanovs were imprisoned to the weeks
after they were killed and a 70 year old man approached me. He saw the cover and title and said he
thought it was one of the most interesting events of history. I invited him to sit with me and talk about
the family and he obliged. That day I learned about his thoughts on the family, how he thought one the
daughters escaped the killing, and even a little about his personal

Muhammed Ali Research Paper
The term legend is overused, often directed at individuals who are undeserving of the title. Such is not
the case for legendary boxer and humanitarian Muhammed Ali. After a long battle with Parkinson s
disease, Ali finally succumbed to complications this past week while being treated for respiratory
issues in a Phoenix hospital. He was 74 years old.
Ali s boxing career was marked by both brilliance and controversy. As a brash young pugilist, he made
his mark on the boxing world in the late 1960s through the 1970s with a record of 55 5. During this
time, he claimed the World Heavyweight title three times (a record) and fought some of the sport s
greatest fighters. Among his most dangerous opponents were Hall of Fame fighters like Sonny Liston,
Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Floyd Patterson. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While his trash talking brought with it a lot of entertainment value, it also offended people in the sport
who took exception to some of his comments.
To non boxing fans, he will always be remembered as the conscientious objector who refused to enlist
for military service in Vietnam due to his Islamic beliefs. His decision riled the nation, resulting in a 3
year suspension from boxing. After resuming his boxing career, he would continue his siege on the
Heavyweight title.
Outside of the ring, Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay) garnered a reputation as a true humanitarian.
Even during the 20 something years he was battling Parkinson s, he traveled the world and spoke out
about poverty, racial inequality and the quest for peace throughout the world. It is in his role as an
ambassador to the world that he will be missed by family, friends and the legion of fans he acquired
throughout his many

Wilderness Information Network
Case 2, The Development of the Wilderness Information Network
Section One The internet boom of the late nineteen ninnies and the early two thousands sparked
creativity across the board for organizations to spread their message, three of these organizations
resided in Missoula Montana. The University of Montana s(U of M) Wilderness Institute, Aldo
Leopold Wilderness Institute, and the Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center thought to
create a website that would spawn a cyberculture of wilderness out of disparate communities to help
protect the future of primitive lands in the modern age. This website was to be called the Wilderness
Information Network, which in short would overcome barriers of geography, finances, and
bureaucracy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Allocations of funds for the project would come from the Wilderness Management Distance Education
Program awarded to the University, and the Carhart agency s discontinued BLM s computer project.
This is where I was uneasy with the fact that an institute without a computer science/development
program would be creating the Wilderness Information Network. I look back to the creation of the
ACA(Affordable Care Act) website which resulted in a disaster that still faces problems to date,
instead of hiring a private firm to create the website with input from the various health agencies and
politicians, it was built in the opposite manner. This is where I began to look into Ronald Moe s Limits
of Privatization Theory and how it can be useful when applied in certain applications such as
developing and maintaining a website. Furthermore, proving that the public sector tends to expand too
quickly in times of innovation, which makes many functions performed by government agencies
disordered and ineffective; thus, this work may be better assigned to private sector units which will
perform these functions more efficiently and economically. (Moe, 1987) Next, I observed the
confrontation between the Park Service and the contributors to WIN, and came to the conclusion that
Park.Net would eventually outsource WIN due to its current establishment, similar information, and
popularity. All things considered, WIN could still be created by the three Montana Agencies, but I
foresee that a lack of interest would be taken to the site and an unstable budget could hinder the
website down the road (Perrow,

Reflection Of Rene And Rene Mora s Life
Rene, Rene Mora; I think that name will forever be engraved on my heart. As a little girl, I already had
my whole life planned out, but what didn t come to plan was being put into juvenile probation at
sixteen. His parents and my mother met in mandatory parenting classes, there, our parents would sit
and compare their children to each other. I had already known of Rene because we were attending the
same high school at the time, and the fact that I would always hear about him fighting at school, but
never would I had imagined that I would end up dating the kid. We officially met while we were both
in bad moments of our lives, but Rene ended up saving me in every day that a person can be saved.
Sociological imagination is the awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the
wider society; it is understanding that some things in society may lead to a certain outcome. I like to
think it as stepping into someone else s shoes, I always do this before I throw away food or clothes.
Rene suffered with a high tolerance of anxiety; he reacted fast to something while he was full of anger,
and then apologized for it after a short period of time. These days, we unfortunately still live in a
society where some young men think proving themselves to others makes them real or down. A lot of
them don t think abut loosing their freedom or family, until they are behind a steel door or dead. Our
book left out the topic of grief; I feel that many people suffer with it today,

Faculty Chamber Players Concert Report
I attended the Faculty Chamber Players concert on Monday, February 13th, 2017. This four part
concert took place in Morgan Hall of the Bailey Performance Center. The Faculty chamber players
who performed the first piece, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s (1756 1791) Flute Quartet Number 1 in D

I had hoped that it would be a pleasant experience as I do enjoy listening to music without a vocal
accompaniment. When I arrived at Morgan Hall and sat down in the fifth row, slightly off center, I
looked around and realized there was no decorations nor embellishments of any kind. This struck me
as odd, but again, I had never experienced anything like this before. As a message came over the
speaker to inform us the concert was about to begin, I became anxious for the performers to come on
stage. When the concert did commence, I was enlightened and impressed with the immense skill these
performers had. It sounded as if I was listening to my Pandora classical music station with my
headphones in. In my opinion, the concert was very delightful for the most part, with occasional slight
disappointments, only accredited to my distaste in some of the

City Councilor Case Study
The City Council performs three essential functions: representation, legislation, and oversight. If it
fails to perform these roles adequately, Lewisville loses. By speaking for resident s interests, a City
Councilor bridges the gap between City Hall and the parts of the city that may feel disenfranchised.
By recommending candidates for mayoral appointments, a City Councilor helps ensure that Lewisville
s diverse interests are represented in all areas of city governance. By taking an active role in setting
city priorities, a City Councilor ensures that future plans will benefit as many residents as possible.

A Councilor needs to have a grasp of the complexities of the law, and an awareness of the risks and
potential rewards of a change. A bad decision can undermine years of hard work and can cost
homeowners and businesses thousands of dollars. A Councilor must be able to consider creative, but
legal and ethical solutions to reach a positive outcome for all concerned.
To fulfill its oversight and legislative responsibilities, the Council also enacts rules which affect the
quality of life in our neighborhoods. It must be able to perform independent research and to diligently
evaluate the information it receives from the city administration. If we want excellent, efficient
government, then we must ensure that all policies, ideas, and projects get a sound review. A good
Council will cooperate with the Mayor whenever possible, but some plans might be wrong for
Lewisville, and the Council needs the guts to send them back to the drawing board.

Catalysts for American Revolution
Nick Cuccaro U.S History 1 Liberty! The American Revolution Quiz October 9th, 2012 The American
Revolution, also known as the Revolutionary War, was a war that had raged on for eight years
stemming from major political differences of opinion. Though, the fighting and the discontent
between the two opposing forces, Americans and British, had been developing for years before the
first shots ever had gone off to start the revolution. The reasoning for the tension between the two is
traced back to one of the main catalysts being the Stamp Act that was imposed on New England
colonies, then to one of the last being The Boston Tea Party that ended with British war ships being
sent to Boston with attempts to keep in under control. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result of this, Parliament began issuing several Acts upon the American Colonies of which they
could do next to nothing about due to Britain simply stating it was for the good of the Empire. Acts
that they had issues were ones such as the Quartering Act of 1766, which required the colonists to
house British soldiers at their own expense. They also put forth the Townshend Acts that would tax all
imports into the colonies. After the Stamp Act, and then Declaratory Act, which had been a scary thing
to them colonists as it had also been used in Ireland, the colonists started to rebel against the British.
They felt that they could be a worthy rival to Great Britain, as Great Britain had been exporting only
finished goods while the colonies were exporting the raw materials needed to produce many of these
goods. Since a huge majority of the goods were imported from Britain, many felt that they should
boycott all of British made items. George Washington agreed on this and stated that he believes and
hoped that the boycott will work, but for it to work all of the people in the colonies must mobilize and
participate in the boycott. There was also the situation of Thomas Hutchinson, who was for more or
less, an English spy, as he resided within the colonies and followed and trusted in English law. He had

Flexible Spending Account Analysis
The deductible is the amount the member pays for services after claim have been processed by the
insurance company. The insurance determines the amount that s applied towards the members
deductible. The amount owed depends on facts of the claim such as the type of service(s) the quantity
of the service(s), and where the service took place. It could take many services like doctor s visits,
test, prescriptions refills, to meet the full deductible. The patient will receive a statement (bill) from
the service provider for the amount determined by the insurance company.
Choosing the high or low deductible plan may depend on how much money you want or could afford
for your monthly insurance premium. High deductible health plans (HDHP) allow members ... Show

It s like you can either pay now or later when it comes to deductibles. With low deductible plans, some
employers may offer a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to help with medical expenses. Typically,
low deductible plans have higher co pays that can be paid with the FSA card.
Flexible spending account FSA and health savings accounts HSA have some similarities, but they are
different. They both have a limit to the amount you can contribute and both offers convenient debit
cards to be used for medical expenses. The FSA allow for all funds to be available the first day
benefits active. The FSA will not allow unused funds to be rolled over to the next plan year. Members
agree to an use it or lose it agreement when opening a flexible spending account.
Once a members deductible is met the insurance company will then pay claims at a cost sharing rate.
Which means the co insurance has now kicked in and now the insurance with pay a part of the claim

Questions On The s Total Rows Of Numbers
Lascap s Fraction
Arshbir Aulakh
Math IA

International Baccalaureate
Sir Winston Churchill Secondary
Introduction
In this investigation, I will consider these sets of numbers that are present in a symmetrical pattern. To
commence this task, we will have to consider the five rows of numbers shown below. 1 1
1 3/2 1
1 6/4 6/4 1
1 10/7 10/6 10/7 1
1 15/11 15/9 15/9 15/11 1
Figure 1: The given symmetrical pattern
These numbers are arranged in a Pascal s triangle, which is a triangular array of binomial coefficients
that was named after a French mathematician Blaise Pascal. Lascap s Fraction is spelt backwards for
Pascal s fraction and there should be a way to solve this. There is an interesting pattern in figure one
where in the 1st row, there are two numbers and in the 2nd row, 3 numbers in the 3rd row, and so
forth. So through this, we know that there is a new number introduced in every consecutive row. But
there is an easier way to represent this pattern and to solve for the Pascal s triangle is by using this
formula.
〖(x+y)〗^n=(n¦0) x^n y^0+(n¦1) x^n y^1+(n¦2) x^(n 2) y^2+⋯+(n¦(n 1)) x^1 y^(n 1)+(n¦n) x^0 y^n
If there happens to be a formula for Pascal s fraction, then there should be a formula for tis Lascap s
Fraction. The first thing we will need to investigate is to describe how to find the numerator of the
sixth row. This could be solved by adding the row number with the previous

  • 2. Collapse of a Section of the Tunnel Near Heathrow Airport On the 21st October 1994 saw, what was described as, one of the worst civil engineering disasters in the United Kingdom in the last twenty five years . Balfour Beatty, the contractor in charge of a part of the £440 million project to build a part of the tunnel for the Heathrow Express train in the CTA (Central Terminal Area), were five years later charged with a fine of £1.2 million plus, £100,000 worth of prosecution costs for the collapse of a section of the tunnel near Heathrow Airport and seventy five meters away from a section of the Piccadilly line tunnel. Geoconsult, an expert designer of Balfour Beatty s for the NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) were also fined by the Old Bailey Criminal Crown Court £500,000 plus £100,000 for prosecution costs. The main reasons for the severity of the prosecution for Balfour Beatty were the failure in ensuring safety for their employees throughout construction of the NATM station tunnels, and failing to ensure safety of the general public, by exposing them to unnecessary danger. Geoconsult were fined mainly due to the lack of technical supervision of the works being carried out. Outline of project Balfour Beatty were given a contract worth £60 million in order to build roughly nine kilometres of tunnel and numerous NATM tunnels with two underground stations at Terminal 4 and the CTA. Balfour Beatty s £60 million contract was part of the total estimated £440 million for the whole of the Heathrow Rail Link Project. Geoconsult, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Investigating The Performance Of A Whitworth Quick Turn... MACHINE QUICK RETURN MECHANISM 2.1 Objective The objective of this experiment is to investigate the performance of a whitworth quick turn motion and to verify that the motion does have a quick return stroke and a slow cutting or forward stroke. 2.2 Theory Definition of a mechanism Mechanisms are a simplified model, usually in the form of a line diagram, which is used to reproduce exactly the motion occurring in a machine. The purpose if this reproduction is to enable the nature of the motion to be investigated without the encumbrance of the various solid bodies which forms the machine elements. 2.3 Whitworth s quick return mechanism WHITWORTH S MECHANISM The above diagram shows the mechanism as used on the apparatus. Link 1 on the top diagram is extended to point A. attach to point A is another link with pivot. The other end of this link terminated in a slider. In a machine tool where this mechanism is used the cutting tool is attached to this slider. The link POA rotates about an O. The mechanism is driven by crank PC which rotates at about C with constant velocity. The slider at P slides along POA as the crank is turned. Its path is shown by the dashed circle, centered on C and through P. Clearly when P is at P1 the slider S is at the outer extremity of its travel .When P is at P2 the slider S is at the inner extremity of its travel. Now as PC rotates with constant velocity the time taken to go from P1 to P2 is less than that taken to go from P2 to P1. However ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of Plunkitt Of Tammany Hall The book Plunkitt of Tammany Hall can leave readers with mixed feelings about politics from Plunkitt s perspective. Plunkitt, himself, used some questionable tactics while he was a politician and defends what he did; such as the difference between honest graft and dishonest graft. Plunkitt lived in the world of politics for forty plus years and thrived in the middle of it all with his political machine, Tammany Hall. The views Plunkitt held differ from those of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. Politics was a word that was used flippantly in Plunkitt s vocabulary. To him, being a politician and living in the world of election and re election was all a game. He used his status as a politician to gain power, money, and influence on the people surrounding him. An example of Plunkitt using his status to gain money can be found in the first chapter of the book. I see my opportunity and I take it. I go to that place and I buy up all the land I can in the neighborhood. Then the board of this or that makes its plan public, and there is a rush to get my land, which nobody cared particular for before. Ain t it perfectly honest to charge a good price and make a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plunkitt seems to have a utopia planned for the entire City of New York; for it to become an oligarchy under the careful watch and guidance of the political machine, Tammany Hall. Plunkitt describes how no one, but the Tammany Hall leaders, would have to worry about anything if New York became its own state. Plunkitt even references President Abraham Lincoln, saying the government of Tammany Hall is one that Lincoln would have blessed. Plunkitt continues to talk about how he would do everyone a favor by helping them until he believes they can stand on their own two feet. To show what he means, he uses the analogy of how the federal government is looking after and helping the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Disappearances In Ferguson Analysis detainees once they disappeared into the hundreds of secret detention centers known as pits and black holes . Aside from spreading confusion among guerrilla organizations, planting fear in Argentine society, destroying incriminating evidence, and misleading world opinion, the disappearances also served as a remembrance of the Dirty War . The armed forces did their best to influence national memory by impressing, the dirty war had been a legitimate antirevolutionary war against a guerrilla insurgency supported by Cuba and the Soviet Union. The military supported their actions by stating that, the military had put Argentina on the right track, they had halted the political disintegration, stimulated the economy, and combated corruption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Torture and disappearances were not officially sanctioned, but were the inevitable excesses of war. The statements from the Junta failed to convince the Argentine people not only because they knew that it was false, but because the fate of the disappeared was of an overarching public concern. The meaning of a disappeared as someone alive yet missing changed into someone dead yet unaccounted for. Unlike in the case of the Holocaust, where the absence of proof of the death of millions of concentration camps, the Argentine dirty war lacked such open ideological framework and visible infrastructure of mass murder. The Argentine military always denied having the disappeared in secret detention and thus nurtured a hope among relatives that was hard to abandon. Furthermore, the political reality of an Argentina climbing out of years of authoritarianism did not allow for the public acceptance of a presumption of death without the presence of a corpse. The continued demand for truth demonstrates that personal and social traumas revolve around a search for the meaning of past suffering. An individual may forget or not recall certain devastating experiences, but that does not make the traumatic event go away. It rather pushes it to the front of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The definition that Peters gives of Public policy is the sum of government activities whether pursued directly or through agents, as those activities have an influence on the lives of citizens (4). This definition of public policy can be categorized into three levels that will make differences in citizen s lives. The first level is policy choices. This level is when, decisions made by politicians, civil servants, or other granted authority that are directed toward using public power to affect the lives of the citizens (4). The first and most fundamental division of our government is federalism or the constitutional allocation of governmental powers between the federal and state governments (24). Throughout the years federalism has changed from what it was first described in the constitution. Contemporary federalism is what is used in our modern government, and with the dilemmas that we have now a more centralized government has been used, which was not planned when our government was created. The second division is separation of powers. This division has a major impact on public policies. The constitution distributes the powers of the federal government among three branches, each capable of applying checks and balances to the other two (29). These three divisions can either work together, which makes policymaking smooth and able to get things done, or they can veto each other which makes policymaking harder and nothing gets done. The third division is subgovernments, or can also be described as iron triangles. This division has three actors involved the first is interest groups, the second is congressional committees or subcommittees, and the third is the administrative agency (31 33). These actors work off each other to help get policies implemented. These three division help compose our public policies in the United States. Our modern government is large and complicated. After about 8 minutes of me just standing there questioning myself, I snapped myself out of it and talked to this Agent Dominic . How do you know me? I asked him. Well, I was elated until I saw him sitting in the corner of my hospital room, still in all black, talking on his phone. I intended my derogatory question for no one in particular because there were several nurses in the room at the time. Oh, ladies he is awake. One of the nurses told the rest. Um, sir, while you were at McDonald s you blacked out and suffered a minor concussion. The nurse also explained to me that I am okay to go if I felt better. Once I stepped out of that hospital bed my ungainly walking was a threat to the eyes; I felt so vulnerable at the time I didn t want to be seen in public like this. I decided that saimin was my delicacy and comfort food right now, and I stayed in the hospital bed for a few more hours as I devoured 3 bowls of saimin. It was a world in flux, a world awash in a tsunami of what was and what could be. In June of 1697 dissatisfaction reached a head ushering in a new era of rambunctious youth that had enough of the status quo. Dennis Ashwell was no different despite his background. He hailed from a penthouse in New York overlooking Central Park. He went to good schools and got good grades. Released in 2001, there were no games like it out there for its time. For many of us gamers, Runescape was the beginning of an amazing journey. The game was free to play on your web browser, no download necessary. Once your account was created you were able to start your adventure in the exploration of Runescape, there is no better game you can get lost in. Runescape is the missing piece of achievement, adventure, and connection that you are searching for. The concept of the game was revolutionary from the questing to the combat system. Players would have complete control on what they wanted to do. There was a ray of activities such as what type of combat, crafting, merchanting, cooking, mining, hunting, and many others. With each milestone you hit a player would feel a sense of accomplishment. The longer it took to reach that goal the more satisfying it was. This sense of achievement was what all of us craved. For many players this system of gameplay at this level was never seen before. We were used to the console games such as Zelda or Super Mario that had a set storyline to follow and a goal to reach, once completed the game was over. Unlike the typical game of the time Runescape was a never ending story. There was always something to achieve and conquer within the game setting it apart from Zelda and Super Mario. Thus the superpowers were involved and contributed to the conflict but in a very small way compared to nationalism and religious differences in the Middle East. During 1948 and 1978 there was massive conflict in the Middle East between Arab Muslim countries and Jewish Israel. This conflict was caused by nationalism and religious differences. • 33. quot; The Raven quot; Edgar Allen Poe s journey into the realm of death, fear and the macabre, The Raven is an exploration into the loneliness and despair associated with the loss of a loved one. Through the clever use of rhyme, meter, imagery, symbolism and word choice, Poe catapults us into a world of sinister images, morbid predilections and unearthly machinations. We are, at once, submerged in the pulsing, driving force of supernatural fear as only Poe is able to create. And with every use of the haunting refrain Nevermore, upon which the chilling cadence of this poem is built, Poe transforms a story steeped in remorse and sorrow into a tale of preternatural mystery and suspense. The first, and most powerful literary device that Poe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the use of the alliteration weak and weary , in addition to the internal rhyme of dreary and weary , we are instantly struck by the tone of the poem as being one of loneliness, grief and depression. In the second stanza, we are more fully enlightened to the setting from which these emotions stem. With the use of such phrases like bleak December and dying ember , Poe conveys the speakers internal state with the use of external clues. In both cases, the word choice seems to transmit feelings of isolation and misery from which the speaker wishes to find relief. And, it is here that we are first introduced to the reason for his sorrow, his lost love Lenore. It is from this base of raw emotion and desolate misery that the poem garners speed and evolves. Poe s use of symbolism is another potent tool with which he imparts the meaning and depth of the poem. First and foremost, we must decipher the significance and implication of the raven itself. The embodiment of death, the bird signifies the very issue with which the speaker is grappling. In the suggestion that the bird has come from the Night s Plutonian shore, Poe calls upon the myth of Pluto, the God of the Underworld, the land of the dead in Greek mythology. The Raven, therefore, may be thought of as a creature from the land of the dead. The corresponding relevance of this in the poem is that his loss and grief have taken on a living and ... Similar to Mulcahey, I grew up in a family invested in the automotive industry however unlike the experience she is giving her son my parents were hardly around and I wouldn t change my experience because it has made me who I am. • 36. Structure Of The Gettysburg Address Abraham Lincoln was president of the United States and in office during the Civil War, during this war the North and South were at odds and much blood was shed. The Battle of Gettysburg was particularly gruesome, but none the less a major win for the Union. Immediately after the battle, Lincoln was invited to speak on behalf of all fallen soldiers and on the victory that the Union so desperately needed. The Gettysburg Address motivated the American people to persevere and continue fighting the Confederacy in order to free the slaves and make the country whole again. Not only did this device provoke sympathy from the citizens, but it also rekindled their want to fight and persevere for those who do not have a voice and for those who lost their lives protecting the belief that all men are equal. It is clear that Lincoln is using this device when he states, A final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live . A touching statement such as this one appeals to the human side of the audience members, thus causing them to feel as if it is their duty to continue with high spirits in such a treacherous war. Another rhetorical device employed by Lincoln is his use of inclusive language. For instance, the continuous utilization of the word we , was no mistake. This is meant to create a sense of unity and camaraderie between all people in the United States, not just the Confederacy or the Union. In order to sufficiently motivate and uplift the American people Lincoln used these persuasive techniques. One can obviously see how this has paid off by how highly regarded the speech still is over 150 years later. Lincoln not only uses pathos to ensure that his point is understood but he also uses the rhetorical device anaphora. But if you ve never heard much about this particular legal maneuver, you ll agree with most of the people who find themselves in a similar position: the name is what makes the mechanics lien so confusing; they are actually most often used by subcontractors and suppliers. It s a legal claim against a property that has been improved or remodeled in some way. If you don t see the logic behind the mechanics lien there are two matters that you probably aren t taking into consideration. First, at a fundamental level, the law assumes that between the person who ordered all new lighting for their house and the electrician who placed the order and fronted the cash, the electrician s need to be paid is probably greater. Second, the law presumes that you as the owner who paid the contractor for the job in full can simply respond to this situation by suing the general contractor. This is true, but there s still a big problem to deal with immediately. When a mechanics lien is placed, you may have days or months to pay what is owed the subcontractor or the property can be sold to satisfy the debt. In comparison, you can sue the general contractor, but obtaining the money from this direction will probably be a long process. How can you avoid the problems that come with mechanics liens? 1. Pay for the work being done with joint checks. Offering a series of checks made out jointly to the general contractor and subcontractors working on the job is a good way to ensure that everyone gets paid. Joint checks can only be cashed if the ultimate beneficiary endorses it, which helps ensure that subcontractors and suppliers are paid. 2. Obtain a lien waiver. St. Augustine is attempts to induce that if God made human being in his image then why is there so much suffering and destruction. One of Sextus Empiricus theories is that there is no correct or incorrect way of living because each culture perceives the world differently. Plato is trying to persuade people that knowledge cannot come from our senses because our senses are constantly changing. Therefore that s why St. Augustine would say evil couldn t derive from teaching because teaching is good. In true teaching or knowledge there is no evil there because education is good and positive according to St. Augustine. So where does evil come from and who is responsible for that? If God made humans and a lot of people do sin and evil why don t people blame God. But God cant be the source of evil because God is good and he can t do evil. If something is evil because it is illegal, that means then the law determines what is evil and what is not evil. Evil and good can t depend on laws; the law does not determine what is good or evil. Thrasymachus in Plato dialogue would disagree because there is no good or evil. Good and evil is just what society determines to be good and evil based on the law it makes. Maybe evil is what people don t like what is done to them. So if someone does not want to be killed then it s evil to kill. Comparison Of Angelas Ashes And Angela s Ashes Finally, both novels display the effects of living in these situations as well as the similar methods in which people cope with the hardships in life. Alcoholism affects characters in both novels, specifically Frank McCourt s father, Malachy, and Dickens tragic hero, Sydney Carton. In Angela s Ashes, one of the constant sources of their misfortunes is Malachy McCourt. Though he cares for his family, as evident in his strong relationship with his sons and love for their mother, he continuously drinks away the family s money for food and other basic necessities for life, spending long nights at pubs and coming home in the early morning. One night, Angela is fed up and orders Frank to go find his father at the pub and tell everyone, your father is drinking the money for the baby... there isn t a scrap of food in this house, not a lump of coal to start the fire, not a drop of milk for the baby s bottle (McCourt 183 184). At this point, Malachy s drinking is worsening and causing a great strain on the family, money wise as well as emotionally. Malachy is unable to change for his family as the alcohol has already taken over his life and he relies on it to cope, for example when his infant daughter passes away. In A Tale of Two Cities, Sydney Carton is also reliant on alcohol and spends a lot of time drunk, though he does not have a family or anyone to take care of. Though, the fighting and the discontent between the two opposing forces, Americans and British, had been developing for years before the first shots ever had gone off to start the revolution. Questions On The s Total Rows Of Numbers Lascap s Fraction Arshbir Aulakh Math IA 000277 0 International Baccalaureate Sir Winston Churchill Secondary Introduction In this investigation, I will consider these sets of numbers that are present in a symmetrical pattern. To commence this task, we will have to consider the five rows of numbers shown below. 1 1 1 3/2 1 1 6/4 6/4 1 1 10/7 10/6 10/7 1 1 15/11 15/9 15/9 15/11 1 Figure 1: The given symmetrical pattern These numbers are arranged in a Pascal s triangle, which is a triangular array of binomial coefficients that was named after a French mathematician Blaise Pascal. Lascap s Fraction is spelt backwards for Pascal s fraction and there should be a way to solve this. There is an interesting pattern in figure one where in the 1st row, there are two numbers and in the 2nd row, 3 numbers in the 3rd row, and so forth. So through this, we know that there is a new number introduced in every consecutive row. But there is an easier way to represent this pattern and to solve for the Pascal s triangle is by using this formula. 〖(x+y)〗^n=(n¦0) x^n y^0+(n¦1) x^n y^1+(n¦2) x^(n 2) y^2+⋯+(n¦(n 1)) x^1 y^(n 1)+(n¦n) x^0 y^n If there happens to be a formula for Pascal s fraction, then there should be a formula for tis Lascap s Fraction. The first thing we will need to investigate is to describe how to find the numerator of the sixth row. This could be solved by adding the row number with the previous ...
