Mental Health History
ntroduction to the History of Mental Illness Before the advent of technology and the scientific age,
sources of mental illness were found to be the workings of demons, spirits, and the supernatural. In
that first century B.C superstition eventually transformed into some of the first early biological
explanations. Hippocrates was the first to theorize that mental illness was a disease of the brain. With
the fall of the Roman empire came the Dark Ages in Europe. The churches of Europe gained massive
influence and doctors were replaced with missionaries and faith healers. With the turmoil of Middle
Ages Europe s epidemics, political unrest, and famines a reversion of demonology was rampant in the
form of witch hunts, lunacy trial, and other barbaric ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there were other ways to ward of mental illness in this innovative society. The Ancient
Egyptians treated mental illness through recreational activities. Such activities were; concerts, dances,
painting, and gardening. The disabled were to engage in activities in order to achieve some
resemblance of normality in their lives, as well as to relive symptoms of their illness such as
erraticness. Knowledge of the human body was also known to this civilization. The advancement of
their technologies included surgeries, and medicine. Through papyri dating back to the sixteenth
century B.C.E , early documents suggest Egyptians were also likely the first to site the brain as the
location of mental functions. Hysteria in women was diagnosed as a biological function of a
wandering uterus fumigation of the vagina was used to recorrect the organ and return it to its original
position. ( INCERT reference)
The early physician and commonly held father of modern medicine Hippocrates was a vocal critic of
demonology. The Physician proposed mental illness stems from natural forces within the body,
principally the brain. If there were disturbances to ones thoughts or actions, the brain was the source
of these abnormalities. The categories classified into three different categories: mania, melancholia,

The Current Civil Justice System Of England And Wales Essay
In your opinion, how adequate is the current Civil Justice System of England and Wales in respect of
delivering access to justice? To determine whether the current Civil Justice System of England and
Wales is adequate in delivering access to justice, it is necessary to look at the system prior to the
Woolf reforms, the implementations made by the Woolf reforms and the implementations made by the
Jackson reforms. The Civil Justice System of England and Wales prior to the Woolf reforms Prior to
the Woolf reforms, the Civil Justice System of England and Wales was just a civil system as there was
no Justice. This is because lawyers were able to charge as much as they liked. This meant that only
those who were wealthy would get representation in court as they were the only ones who could afford
the absurd amounts charged by lawyers. As the loser pays the cost, those who were not wealthy would
find themselves losing more money as they could not afford representation. This meant that the
wealthier party did not lose out as their costs would be reimbursed to them. There were also excessive
documents which were not needed. This incurred various delays with false starts. The terminology
used was archaic and therefore incomprehensible for those with no legal knowledge . This posed a
problem for those who had to represent themselves in court. What all of these show is that there was
no justice in the civil system prior to the Woolf reforms. What can be said to be the ideal system of

How To Do Things With Words Analysis
In How to do Things with Words , Austin tells how some words are actually used in speaking and how
others are merely utterances. How are utterances so important if it is only a simple statement that is
being made? Why does society put so much value on these statements, such as I do ? First we must
establish what exactly an utterance is according to Austin is. According to Austin, an utterance is a
spoken word or sound that is made to provide information. Sometime these words are understood
other times it may just be a sound that does not make sense at all. A popular utterance that is used
heavily is the I do statement used in weddings. Why does such a simple statement have so much
weighing on it? These two simple words mean so much to the two people that are getting married. For
them it means that they are choosing to spend the rest of their lives together. A question proposed by
Austin is why isn t a full statement used at weddings since it is so important? Is it much simpler to use
a two worded phrase instead of a longer sentence? I believe that the answer is yes, it is much simpler
to use a shorter phrase rather than a much longer statement. This can relate to how in today s society
everything is has a much simpler ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has become more relevant with things like social media. Take twitter for example. A person only
has 140 characters to use in order to get their statement across. Even on facebook where people have
unlimited characters to make a post, nobody wants to sit and read a post that is more than 500
characters long. In order to grab the audience s attention, the speaker must somehow shorten what
they are saying, but keep the message they are trying to relay. If someone really wants to make a big
statement, they must first figure out how to turn longer statements into much simpler utterances. This
is where the texting language comes into

Essay on Medicine During the Elizabethan Era
Medicine During the Elizabethan Era
The medicinal practices and problems of the Elizabethan Era were very important to the people,
although they are very different from those of today. There were many different beliefs and diseases,
like the Plague. Medicine was not an exact science and was related to Alchemy (Chemistry). Here,
some of the many practices and beliefs of the Elizabethan Era will be discussed.
One of the most widely known and important of the beliefs was the humours. It was believed that
every living creature was composed of four elements, the humours. They were blood, phlegm, choler
(or yellow bile), and melancholy (or black bile). It was believed that the overall total combination of
these four elements determined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He would also wish to know which part of the body was affected by the illness, because each part was
related to a certain star sign or constellation, and he would bear in mind under which star sign each
ingredient of certain medicines was under.
Alchemy (Early Chemistry) was another science closely related to medicine. Alchemy was the name
given to this science in Latin Europe in the 12th century. It was a belief that the human body was
closely related to the stars and the heavens. Over hundreds of years, the main goals of alchemists were
to turn any metal into gold and discover an elixir which could cure all ills or lead to immortality. This
magical elixir was called the philosopher s stone. Alchemy was based on the belief that there are four
basic elements fire, earth, air and water and three essentials salt, sulfur and mercury. The metals gold,
silver, copper, lead, iron, and tin were all known before the rise of alchemy. The liquid metal, mercury,
and the burning rock, sulfur, were also known. Many processes with these elements were known to
alchemists. The art of alchemy was heavily spiritual. Alchemists were the first to try out different
ideas and experiment with different elements, but because of their intense metaphysical and spiritual
beliefs, they didn t develop modern day scientific methods.
Alchemist studied alchemy for hundreds of years, but they didn t

Sources Of Bigotry In Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose
Twelve Angry Men is a dramatic courtroom play by Reginald Rose published in 1954, which focuses
on a jury of twelve men arguing the fate of a young boy, who has been accused of being a murderer.
This play cleverly portrays the fact that prejudice exists in society and within every conflict. There are
many sources of bigotry in this play, those being mostly character and legal conflict. Many jurors
within this play fail to consider all the evidence and take it at face value, this leads to reasonable
doubt, which in turn introduces controversy between characters. Legal conflict is introduced by the
writer, when juror 8 who believes the court failed to carefully examine the evidence and were to hasty
to validate a decision. No. I m saying

Of Nervous Conditions By Chinua Achebe s Nervous Conditions
THE AUTHENTICITY OF AFRICAN STORIES
Africa has been viewed as the antithesis of Europe. It has been undermined as some may say it is
underdeveloped. It has been portrayed as the exact opposite of civilised Europe as it is viewed as
uncivilised. Africans have been eliminated as a human factor and seen as animals. In this essay I will
outline how African literature have been able to reclaim African stories through their authenticity. I
will use the novel Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga and two short stories A Private
Experience by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and The Prophetess by Njabulo Ndebele to show how
Africa has been successfully reclaimed from the stereotypical view of Europeans drawing as a basis
for further development from Chinua Achebe s article, An Image of Africa. I will first analyse the
novel Nervous Conditions under the theme of gender and patriarchal oppression. The short story A
Private Experience will focus on class divisions whilst The Prophetess will focus on beliefs.
According to Chinua Achebe, Joseph Conrad in his novella, Heart of Darkness represents Africa in an
opposite way to what Africa really is. He says Conrad depicts Africa as different and unknowable in
contrast to Europe. He views it as the exact opposite of Europe. Africa is viewed as uncivilised.
Joseph Conrad s novella eliminates Africans as a human factor and represents Africa as a blank stage
where Europeans enter an implicitly dangerous zone which functions as a plot

Recording Studio At The Age Of 21
Recording studio the main aim of this business is to offer an affordable practice space and recording
studio to young bands and older more established ones as well. I also plan to have a student discount
for bands under the age of 21, perhaps a 10% discount. The focus of the business would be mainly on
practice space containing high end equipment including brands like marshal and Ashdown; however a
large amount of effort and resources will be used creating a small, elite studio recording space with
single instrument/vocal pods, 2/3, an eight foot drum recording room, and one large full band room
with sufficient mid high end microphones. Transition into the full recording studio is the main aim of
this business and will hopefully take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would make competitive pricing very hard especially for a new business; however the distance to
Leeds from Harrogate, with train ticket prices makes up the total cost of a single band practice at least
15 £20 per person. With the high socio economic group of Harrogate citizens, we as business can
charge a similar price but locally to secure as much revenue as possible.
In this screen shot you can see that there is only one other studio space in Harrogate, and after looking
at the website, all I can tell is that they are a recording studio in Harrogate, they say nothing about
pricing, availability or much else. This would imply they don t get much business as they aren t trying
very hard to advertise. Though this could imply that the lack of effort is due to a lack of interest, I
believe there is definitely enough demand in the Harrogate area, and it only leaves more room in the
Harrogate market for my business to occupy.
I think that this business will require a location that is enough distance from the city centre so not to
disturb other businesses and flats, as when bands are playing music, maybe more than one at a time, a
substantial amount of noise pollution will be created. However it does need to be close enough that it
is easily accessible and can be seen by the general public easily. So perhaps somewhere on the
outskirts near valley gardens or up near the Odeon cinema, as these areas

Radiation therapy is a type of treatment modality that administers radiation to patients with cancer.
This form of treatment has many components that contribute toward ensuring that radiation therapists
adequately treat the malignant tissue within the body. One of the major components in radiation

Essay about The Large Ant
Analytical Essay The Large Ant
In 2012, 16259 people in the United States were murdered and another 1.8 million people were sent to
the hospital due to assault. Humans resorting to violence and harming others is a daily occurrence, but
why? Is it in our nature, are we instinctively violent, and why is it that these acts are not only
happening in the United States but worldwide. Although the average person does not leave their home
planning on harming somebody that day, under the right circumstances almost every single person in
this world will commit an act of violence. Sometimes these acts are justified, such as when we are
trying to protect ourselves or a loved one, but what about the smaller acts that we all do every day. ...

You were afraid? Hopper asked. I was scared to death. I still am to tell the truth. (Fast 155) His fear of
the creature appears to have triggered his brain to categorize the creature as a threat, which would
explain why his instincts were triggered and he felt he had to kill it. When we feel threatened we react
to protect ourselves, we would not just sit there and let ourselves be harmed if it can be helped, but the
narrator seems to have had no reason to kill the creature. That is why I am asking you why you killed
it. You must have had a reason. Did it seem to attack you...or make any sudden motion towards you?
(Fast 154) The narrator answers no to both of these questions yet he still felt the need to kill the
creature. This is when Fitzgerald goes on to state the only reason the narrator killed it was simply
because he is a human and it is his instinct to do so. He then opened the doors to one of the wall
cupboards and there stood eight jars of formaldehyde and in each jay a specimen like mine and in each
case mutilated by the violence of its death. (Fast 155) It could not have been just a random occurrence
when eight others were killed by similar ways with people who also felt they had to kill the creatures,
even though there was no threat to any of the people who killed them. We don t look carefully at a
thing that is horrible or repugnant to us. You can t look carefully through a screen of hatred. (Fast

As time passes by, children grow up, and reach a point where they have to make decisions for their
future. Most of them will go to college, but it is their choice to make a big jump to success or have a
bad attitude to everything and waste the rest of their lives. I, a seventeen year old student, was stuck in
a world of choices, and did not know which way to go. Since I was not a very good student at school,
everybody advised me to enroll in an easy to get admitted to college in Vietnam. As a stubborn girl, I

candidates like me. I once had a Skype session with a student from APU named Bek, and the session
went quite well. He gave me some advice for my essays, the interview, and some information about
part time jobs for international students. That helped me a lot. Furthermore, as a student studies about

religious teachings and this grew in Germany. After years of battling for religious reforms, a new
religion was formed named Lutheranism. Between 1524 and 1526, German peasants began to revolt
the Holy Roman Empire. The peasant revolts were caused by greed and wanting to get rid of serfdom
and corrupt leaders in the Holy Roman Empire, and both positive and negative responses were seen.

Traumatic Arthritis Essay
Introduction
Rheumatic arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive disorder that commonly presents a group of
mechanically related disorders concerning the degenerative nature of joints that is specifically
affecting the articular cartilage and subchondral bone (1). Thus, causing a dip in the quality of life in
RA patients. The aetiology for RA is unclear, however, a combination of hereditary susceptibility
causes a reaction that causes severe inflammation in the synovial membrane (1). However, other
factors such as the immunological, hormonal and environmental factors plays a role in development of
RA (2). The pathology of RA is characterised by an insidious order of biological events that will
eventually lead to articular cartilage destruction and secondary changes in surrounding tissues (1). The
pathological changes to joints consequently lead to structural deformity and functional disability. The
clinical presentation of RA patients are often intermittent joint pain, worse on movement; stiffness;

King Afonso Pestel Influence Essay
The Portuguese presence in King Afonso s kingdom had many detrimental effects, including ones
derived from the trade of excess goods, illegal slavery, and disease. According to King Afonso, the
Portuguese coming into the Kongo undermined his authority when they they gave away a profusion of
goods. Portuguese officials were allowing merchants to set up shops and sell goods that were
prohibited, and this was done in such abundance that the people lower than the King no longer obeyed
the authority, because they possessed more of the items than the authority themselves. In his letter,
Afonso mentioned that ...many of our vassals, whom we had in obedience, do not comply because
they have the things in greater abundance than we ourselves... (paragraph ... Show more content on

The Portuguese also debilitated the King s authority by establishing a corrupted, out of control slave
trade. At first, King Afonso had welcomed business and the trading of slaves. But as time went on, the
Portuguese took things too far. Afonso makes a huge point of this in his letter, writing ...the mentioned
merchants are taking every day our natives, sons of the land and the sons of our noblemen and vassals
and our relatives...and so great, Sir, is the corruption and licentiousness that our country is being
completely depopulated... (paragraph two). Instead of taking and selling people of no importance in
his kingdom, the Portuguese were taking noblemen and other respected people as slaves. It was this
horrific act that infuriated King Afonso, and his kingdom would have soon be desolate of people if
this type of slave trade continued. The disadvantageous effects didn t stop there with the Portuguese,
for they were also sending a lot of civilians over to the Kongo that brought with them disease and
sickness. The people of King Afonso s kingdom had no way of being immune to these illnesses, and
according to him this was an enormous disservice to

Social media consist of two words. Social refers to communication among individual or group of
people. Media which means to advertise and communicate ideas or information through newspapers,

in the following excerpt I really got to know her quite intimately. I don t mean it was anything

intimately a word used to mainly describe scenes of physical attraction/interaction, he used this word
to mean the close mental connection of holden and janes. Hw wanted to mentally trick the reader by

Orbital Parameters Of Earth And Mars
Question 5
It is assumed that Earth and Mars are in Circular orbits. The initial relative phase angle is stated to be
30o. Calculate the transfer orbit of a time of flight (TOF) 120 day. The orbital parameters such as ΔVs
must be calculated. In addition, the propulsion considerations must be evaluated for the case when
mission is to be Evaluate the orbital parameters, ΔVs and propulsion parameters when the mission is
to be executed by a 500 kg spacecraft, which utilizes 450 s specific impulse propellant.
Assumptions:
Orbits are coplanar. Initial position of earth is taken as reference direction and epoch of the mission
Data:
2The total Time period of Earth = 365 days
1Hence, the time period of Mars = 365 x 1.881 = 686.565 days
3Distance of Earth from Sun = 149.5 x 106 kilometers
4Distance of Mars from Sun = 227.8 x 106 kilometers
5Initial position of planets: 7After 120 days position of planets:
8Change in position of Earth = 120/365 = 0.32876 = 32.876% of the complete orbit.
Change in angular position of Earth = 0.32876 x 360o = 118.356o
Final position of Earth with reference direction = 118.356 + 0 = 118.356o
Change in position of Mars = 120/686.56 = 0.17478 = 17.478% 0f the complete orbit.
Change in angular position of Mars = 0.17478 x 360o = 62.9219o
Final position of Mars with reference direction = 62.9219 + 30 = 92.9219o Transfer ellipse:

The Transformation Masks Of The Kwakwaka
The transformation masks of the Kwakwaka wakw culture were ritual items. Kwakwaka wakw does
not refer to only one tribe but numerous others. Kwakwaka wakw consists of 17 tribes in their nation
in total that originally spoke the language. The kwakwaka wakw nation is found in the northwest coast
of British Columbia, Canada. The many different nation of the kwakwaka wakw is extremely diverse,
although there are commonalities. For example many of the groups relate that their ancestors roamed
the world transforming themselves into animals. This is also shows how the masks have two face in
one as to represent their ancestors. Even though the culture has such an amazing artistic style and
rituals the people underwent numerous struggles to hold onto them. The Kwakwaka wakw bands
consist of four clans (killer whale, raven, eagle, and wolf). The clans are divided by numayn (or na
mina) which can be loosely translated as groups of fellows of the same . Numayns were responsible
for safeguarding family crest and for conveying their specific rights. This could have included access
to natural resources such as fishing areas and rights to sacred names and dances related to their
ancestors or the group s origin. The numayns were ranked and typically were the only ones to fill in a
spot at any given time in a group. Each rank entitled them to specific rights as well, such as
ceremonial privileges. These ceremonial privileges included the right to wear masks. Animal

The Pros And Cons Of The Holocaust
Holocaust prisoners left, together, in cold dark water for hours at a time. Were their punishments for
nothing? Or did their suffering somehow help us today? Between the years of 1939 and 1945, also
known as the Holocaust; the Nazi s took test subjects from groups of people to perform procedures
and experiments on. Unfortunately, all of these so called important tests were exceptionally inhumane.
A few examples of the procedures performed were leaving prisoners in freezing cold water for three
hours straight or only allowing them to drink pure ocean water for two weeks straight. For the most
part, what those German doctors did was unnecessary due to the fact that the outcome was highly
predictable. But over the course of the intense studies, a few valid and useful tidbits of information did
surface. Some of the research findings from Nazi medical testings during the Holocaust continue to
benefit today s modern medical development. One of the many human experiments that the Nazi s
performed on Holocaust prisoners was the cold water experiment. Prisoners were immersed into tanks
of ice water for hours at a time, (Cohen, et. al). The purpose of this at the time was to find out how
long German pilots could survive in the North Sea if their plane was to be shot down (Cohen, et. al).
Unfortunately, many of the prisoners died as result of being left in for an absurd amount of time
(likely close to three hours). However, the information that was recorded from this specific

Relation Between Relation And Social Capital Of The Act Of...
Molm, Shaefer, and Collett (2007) conducted a study to determine whether there was any sort of value
involved with reciprocity. These authors examine the relationship between what is given (referred to
as instrumental values for both reciprocators) and the symbolic values (or the social capital of the act
of reciprocation). They suggest that there are three criteria that must be met to measure the value of
the relationship, which include recurrence across time, uncertainty in reciprocation, and voluntary
(which means that each party must willingly engage in the relationship and the reciprocation). These
three criteria are also things that can be used to examine relationship formation. For example, when
meeting someone for the first time, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Murray (2005) gives an example of an argument between a couple and how their level of closeness
could impact one s willingness to fuel the argument through reciprocating negative remarks. Murray
(2005) also looked at certain behaviors that would be reciprocated to avoid sending negative
impressions to a potential mate (i.e. feelings of rejection), which include inferences about their partner
s perceptions of risk, inferences about their perceptions of risk, and promoting the relationship versus
promoting self interest. These notions of preserving the relationship even through perceived threats
and risk really help relate how risk reduction reciprocity can be seen in the formation of romantic
relationships. This is seen through the reducing perceived risks and threats by cooperating with
another individual on a more romantic level. For example, if a guy feels lonely, but another guy feels
self conscious about his body, so much so that they may be willing to engage in self harm. Then, it is
possible that by getting involved with one another they reduce the risk that they will engage in self
harm, and they reciprocate by helping one another to gain confidence. Romantic relationships contain
many examples of risk reduction reciprocity, but there is also potential for free riding. For example,
free riders could be cheaters, lovers that don t reciprocate affection, partners that desire lust over love,
etc..., and with these free riders the risk

Matchlocks In Japan
Not long after, news about the weapon began to spread towards other parts of Japan. In 1545 the lord
of Bungo on Kyushu, called Otomo Yoshiaki heard about the weapon and requested a demonstrating
of the musket (Lidin 2002, 6). Otomo also became impressed by the power of the weapon and as a
result, muskets were included on its military arsenal. However, the gun was presented with some
technical problems, which was not reliable to be used in the wars. One of those problems was that it
could not perform properly in rain. But the Japanese generals soon were able to find a solution for it,
even before the Portuguese generals (Perrin 1979, 17). They created a sequential firing technique in
order to accelerate the flow of the bullets. Also, to increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

But it had also changed the ways wars were conducted, as with the advance and power of guns, old
styles of weapons were being slowly abandoned. In 1549 Oda Nobunaga, the military Lord, who with
the successor of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was successfully able to unified Japan under one strong central
government (Brown 1948, 238). Requested an order of five hundred matchlocks to gunsmiths called
Kunitomo (Brown 1948, 238). In 1575, in the battle of Nagashino, Nobunaga had an army of
approximately 70,000 men, and 3,000 of them were equipped with matchlocks (Brown 1948, 238). Its
army was a combination of swords and guns, as at that time they could effectively build tactics using
both. Thus, the use of firearms was quickly spread. In 1582 by the time of Nobunaga death, possibly
one third of Japans soldiers, who were leaded by military barons, were equipped with firearms (Brown
1948, 238). Also, the victories earned at the begging of the Korean invasion, were largely due to the
fact that the Japanese army were equipped with muskets, while the Korean didn t acquire these types
of weapons (Brown 1948). The three unifier of Japan Nobunaga, Hideyoshi and Leyasu made an
extensive use of guns in their battles. Therefore, it can be said that guns played a key role in the
unification of Japan as well as in the 1592 1598 invasions of Koreans (Brown

Hurston at the 14th Street Playhouse on September 25, 2013, presented the audience with a very
culturally embellished version of Hurston s original three tales: Sweat, Story in Harlem Slang, and
The Gilded Six Bits. Zora Neale Hurston strived to portray the reality of life as an African American
in the early 1900s through native dialect in her short stories and novels. Her most notable production,
Their Eyes Were Watching God, is a prime example of her effort to illustrate the life of the everyday
Negro in search of a better life. Each of the short stories portrays a different, yet comparable view on

Salt Marshes And Salt Marshes
Apparently, marshes are often imagined incorrectly. To some people, they might confuse a marsh to a
swamp or to a wetland. Although relative, marshes are only a kind of wetland, which is land where the
water level is close to the soil surface or covers the surface for at least part of the year. Marshes,
specifically salt marshes, are lush, intertidal grasslands renowned for their productivity (Silliman
2014). Simply, a salt marsh is a coastal ecosystem of grasses characterized by poorly drained mineral
soils due to regular flooding of salt water brought in by ocean tides. Since salt marshes serve as
estuaries between the land and ocean, people do not realize an important role they play in protection;
these coastal marshes are presumed to protect human communities from coastal hazards, such as
storms and hurricanes, by providing important ecosystem services. One very important ecosystem
service is their role as a buffer in protecting coastlines (Shepard et al. 2011). As humans fail to
appreciate and protect these marshes, their continuous impacts on coastal infrastructure would not
only negatively impact humans but to the life on the salt marshes as well. Salt marshes are found in
the temporal zone on protected shorelines throughout the world and are stressful environments due to
their intertidal behaviors. As a result, plants and animals living in salt marshes must have adaptations
to deal with the harsh physical stressors, ranging from high salt concentrations, intense heat, and low
oxygen in waterlogged soils (Sulliman 2014). Nevertheless, there is a positive trade off: although
plants and animals have to overcome these physical obstacles, they get access to abundant resources,
protection from predators, and a high potential for both them and their offspring in return. An example
of this trade off is investigated with a fish, a mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus, a resident of intertidal
salt marshes on the east coast of North America. The study suggests that mummichogs have the ability
to alter their habitat use accordingly to environmental factors, such as heat stress and oxygen
depletion, to create a predation refuge habitat, which would then allow high growth rates (Halpin
2000). Due to the stressful

The Power Of Mother Nature In Jack London s To Build A Fire
Everyone seems to underestimate the power of Mother Nature. Those unfamiliar with such a powerful
force should not test their luck with Mother Nature. Although the beauty of nature often hides the
unforeseeable danger, it is important to be clever and treat her with respect. Alaska s unpredictable
environment in particular is one of the most dangerous to compete with. With temperatures reaching
as low as 80 °F, frostbite is very common amongst those who hike in Alaska. In Jack London s To
Build a Fire , he uses description, characterization, and foreshadowing to prove Mother Nature is not a
force to be reckoned with. Jack London uses description to illustrate a man s foolish determination
that ultimately leads to his death. The story begins with an unnamed man marching through the thick
Alaskan snow. He is not concerned about the darkness or bone chilling temperatures; he is a
newcomer to the Alaskan wilderness. London states, But all this the mysterious, far reaching hair line
trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all
made no impression on the man. It was not because he was long used to it. He was a newcomer in the
land... (London 525). This quote describes the unnamed man s ignorance by saying the cold made no
impression on him and that he will continue his journey regardless. Later into his journey, the man
starts to realize how cold it actually is. Even as the man spits, his saliva crackles in

Progeria Essay
Progeria
Progeria is one of the least known genetic disorders. There are two types of Progeria, the only
difference being the age group that it affects. The Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome is
commonly called Childhood Progeria. The second type of Progeria is Werner s Syndrome, which is
the adult form of Progeria. What basically happens in this disorder is that age is accelerated seven
times faster than that of a normal person. For example, for Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome, a
child could look like he is fifty when he is actually five years old. A twenty year old with Werner s
Syndrome could look similar to a sixty or seventy year old person. There is, even now, not much

They usually have cloudy corneas and possibly blue sclera, which is when the white portion of the
eyeball is blue. Most children infected with this disorder are bald by the time they are four years old
and usually don t grow any taller than three feet. They also typically weigh between 30 to 35 pounds.
Not only does the appearance age, but also the organs experience the accelerated rate of aging. The
spleen is usually enlarged. A child with Progeria will never reach puberty. Children with Progeria
usually don t die by old age. Instead, they usually die at the average age of 13 from a cardiovascular
disease, arteriosclerosis of some other disease that usually affects the very old.
Once called the leprechaun s disease , Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome was first described in
1886 by the English surgeon Jonathan Hutchinson and by Hastings Gilford in 1904. The main reason
why it took so long to find the gene for Childhood Progeria is that it only affects about one baby in

This is about equivalent to one baby with the disorder being born each year in the United States. Since
this disorder was discovered over a century ago, only a little over a hundred cases have been reported,
but they were hard to study from because of the lack of technology. The Progeria Research Foundation

Organizational Learning And Development Management
In the current dynamic global market, corporations are tasked with meeting the challenges of staying
competitive, relevant and profitable. As the demands of innovations begin to move at a quicker pace,
many corporations find themselves looking for answers to address the needs of the business with
regards to overall profitability. Companies have turned to learning and development, or as many
scholars have called it Organizational learning to address performance management. Teaching the
corporation new concepts and ideas are not always an easy task and is often fraught with issues. It is
important to note that the workers or non management employees in a corporation play a significant
role in its success. The manner in which learning and development are approached with employees
must be considered if a corporation is to successfully implement Organizational learning strategies. In
many cases, non management employees in any corporation accounts for the largest sector within the
corporation. Therefore, paying keen attention to this sector of the population will make a difference in
the outcomes of the learning programs that will certainly affect the performance of a corporation. This
essay will explore the different facets that a corporation must consider effectively moving towards
learning and development with regards to non management employees that will positively impact long

Dress Codes In School
Teens are already restricted on what they can and cannot do on school grounds like what we eat, what
classes we take, and what activities we can be in. How we dress should not be one of those reasons.
We have a right to what we wear on a day to day basis. I m not saying that we should all be able to
dress half naked, but we need to dress how we like. There should be no dress codes because the dress
codes are sexest, we need to show our originality, and kids should not have to be taken out of school
because their outfit is inappropriate.
In schools, they usually just talk to the girls about dress codes. Saying no shoulders showing and our
skirts have to be a certain length. Guys on the other hand get away with wearing tank tops to school
everyday. Maybe the problem we have isn t the girls accidentally showing a little shoulder here and
there, but how the guys think. If girls can control themselves with the guys showing their muscles,

Luminol Synthesis Lab Report
In the experiment, Luminol Synthesis and Chemiluminescence, the purpose is to create luminol using
the base mediated reduction of 5 nitro 2,3, dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione and to investigate the
chemiluminescence reaction that luminol is known for. 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was
reduced using sodium hydrosulfite in a solution of sodium hydroxide under reflux conditions. Acetic
acid was used to precipitate the solid luminol product, later the product was collected through vacuum
filtration. The luminol product emitted a blue light when a dilute solution of it and sodium hydroxide
was mixed with a dilute hydrogen peroxide and potassium ferricyanide solution. The blue light seen
correlates to the excited molecules that are dropping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione is the compound being oxidized in the luminol synthesis
reaction to produce the phthalate salt. 2. Acetic acid was used to protonate the solution after the 5 nitro
2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was reduced from NO2 to NH2. If the equivalents of the two
reagents were reversed, NaOH would produce less product since less of the 5 nitro 2,3
dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione would be deprotonated. 3. Cold water was used to rinse the luminol
because it is only soluble in organic solvents, allowing for a better yield of the luminol product. If hot
water were to be used the amount of product would be decreased, because hot water has a higher
tendency to dissolve products, yielding less luminol solid. 4. Luminol is dissolvable in organic
solvents such as, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane but it is insoluble in water. If an organic solvent
were used instead, the luminol would dissolve which would result in the decrease of the yielded
product. 5. The difference between chemiluminescence and fluorescence is the origin of energy used
for the light emission. The energy source for fluorescence arises from the excited electron falling back
to its ground state, emitting light. This energy is emitted as light when it is absorbed at a higher
frequency and then released at a lower frequency visible to humans. The energy source of
chemiluminescence comes from the breaking, forming, or restructuring of chemical bonds in a

to Prophet Muhammad , the last and final of all Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention. His task was
to convey the message of worshipping the One God, Allaah, without ascribing any partners to Him.
The Noble Quran, which is the source of guidance and mercy to mankind, is divided into one hundred
and fourteen (114) Soorahs (chapters) of varying lengths. Ninety three chapters were revealed in
Makkah, while the remaining twenty one were revealed in Madeenah.
The first revelation that the Prophet received was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, Makkan revelations made the Muslims faith in Allaah firmly established. On the other hand,
Madeenan revelations were meant to translate the faith into action and give details of the Divine Law.
Allaah will forever preserve the Quran against all attempts to destroy or corrupt it. Being guarded by
Allaah, it will always remain pure. There does not exist a single copy with any variation from the
recognised text.
Any attempt of alteration has resulted in failure.
Upon the command of the Prophet his Companions would write down what was revealed of the Noble
Quran. They used, for this purpose, palm branches stripped of leaves, parchments, shoulder bones,
stone tablets, etc. About forty people were involved in this task. Among them was Zayd Ibn Thaabit
who showed his work to the Prophet . Thus, the Quran was correctly arranged during the Prophet s
life, but it was not yet compiled into one book. In the meantime, most of the Prophet s Companions
memorised the Quran.
When Abu Bakr became Caliph after the Prophet died, a large number of the Companions were killed
during the War of Apostasy. Umar Ibn Al Khattaab went to the Caliph and discussed the idea of
compiling the Quran into one volume. He was disturbed, as most of those who memorised it had died.
Then, Abu Bakr called for Zayd and commissioned him to collect the Quran into one book, which
became known as the Mus haf.
After Zayd accomplished this great task and

Life Of Ranofer s Half-Brother In The Golden Goblet
The novel Golden Goblet illustrates the life of a young Egyptian boy struggling against the cruelty of
his half brother Gebu. This novel is the life of Ranofer as he desperately tries to uncover the secrets of
his half brother and the mysterious golden goblet. He eventually discovers that Gebu is a tomb robber
and knows he must tell someone. He ends up telling Queen Tiy herself and receiving great rewards for
his actions. When Ranofer finds the goblet, it sets off a whole new stream of events, each leading to
the next. This lead to him figuring out what Gebu does with his helper Wenamon, what a strange scroll
in the scroll room is for and this all leads to Ranofer finding out and being able to prove that Gebu is a
tomb robber. When Ranofer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He finds a interesting scroll with a room that appears useless, a store room he thought. But no, he
realized. It is much more than a store room, The little room in the tomb drawing, the one for the
Pharaoh s master of storehouses. It was no room at all. It was a passage like this disguised so that the
workmen could hack it out without knowing... . Although he did not find the goblet, he found yet
another clue. One day, the day when Gebu and Wenamon go to rob a tomb, Ranofer follows them.
Wenamon is very nervous, he almost is scared, unlike his evil partener Gebu. Wenamon said, ... you
may regret this day impatient one! It was Wenamons murmuring voice, that was certain. Gebu lashed
back at once, Fool, who would follow us? Even the guards are feasting in Thebes. . Ranofer realizes
that Gebu was planning to rob something, bigger than a gold shop, to rob tombs. In conclusion, the
previous reasons prove my point that the most important event is when Ranofer finds the Golden
Goblet. All these events lead to one another in a river of new mysteries and new finds. Eventually,
poor Ranofers problems are solved. He tells the Queen and they amazingly believe him. He is
rewarded greatly and the goblet is found. Ranofer lives a very happy life after with his beloved friends

Human Cultural Diversity Paper
Human cultural diversity is important for counselors to recognize and understand. Furthermore, due to
the wide spanning cultural variances between cultures. Counselors should seek to understand some of
the key psychological issues and recommended therapeutic approaches for that culture. For example,
in Asian cultures family identity is far more important that the western ideology of individualism. Or
there could be some culture assimilation issues within the generational structure of the family. Such as

Film Critique (the Blind Side)
Week Five Individual Film Critique
Neil A. Burgheimer
HUM/150
Week Five Individual Film Critique
This week for the final film critique I chose to review The Blind Side (2009). In this film Sandra
Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a successful interior designer. Her husband Sean Tuohy played by
Tim McGraw is the owner of over 85 fast food franchises including Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried
Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Long John Silver s. In the film Leigh Anne takes a boy named Michael Big
Mike Oher into her home and provides him with the opportunity of a lifetime. Actor Quinton Aaron
takes on the role of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American
football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of Leigh ... Show more content on

There are also quite a few scenes in the film in which the cameras depth of field and focus are used in
different ways to either focus only on one particular subject in the shot or focus on all subjects both
near and far using a deep focus.
As far as the context of the film is concerned I believe it would be possible to take certain scenes and
piece them together in such a way as to illustrate a theme, but I believe watching the entire film really
brings everything together. I have no personal influences or biases that affected my opinion of the
film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no overtones that
should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. Overall I love the story and I think that the Tuohy
family set an amazing example for others to follow.
This film has many genres to include biography, drama, and sports genres. The most prevalent genre
for this film is the biography genre. The Blind Side (2009) tells the story of Michael Oher, the first
round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens. Through the film the life and times of Michael are
chronicled from his early childhood upbringing in the aptly named Hurt Village, to the life he now
lives as a professional football player in the NFL. The film also incorporates many theatrical elements
of a drama and due to the nature of the film it may also fall into the sports genre.
This film was very enjoyable to watch and there are many reasons that I would watch

  • 2. Mental Health History ntroduction to the History of Mental Illness Before the advent of technology and the scientific age, sources of mental illness were found to be the workings of demons, spirits, and the supernatural. In that first century B.C superstition eventually transformed into some of the first early biological explanations. Hippocrates was the first to theorize that mental illness was a disease of the brain. With the fall of the Roman empire came the Dark Ages in Europe. The churches of Europe gained massive influence and doctors were replaced with missionaries and faith healers. With the turmoil of Middle Ages Europe s epidemics, political unrest, and famines a reversion of demonology was rampant in the form of witch hunts, lunacy trial, and other barbaric ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, there were other ways to ward of mental illness in this innovative society. The Ancient Egyptians treated mental illness through recreational activities. Such activities were; concerts, dances, painting, and gardening. The disabled were to engage in activities in order to achieve some resemblance of normality in their lives, as well as to relive symptoms of their illness such as erraticness. Knowledge of the human body was also known to this civilization. The advancement of their technologies included surgeries, and medicine. Through papyri dating back to the sixteenth century B.C.E , early documents suggest Egyptians were also likely the first to site the brain as the location of mental functions. Hysteria in women was diagnosed as a biological function of a wandering uterus fumigation of the vagina was used to recorrect the organ and return it to its original position. ( INCERT reference) The early physician and commonly held father of modern medicine Hippocrates was a vocal critic of demonology. The Physician proposed mental illness stems from natural forces within the body, principally the brain. If there were disturbances to ones thoughts or actions, the brain was the source of these abnormalities. The categories classified into three different categories: mania, melancholia, and ... • 3. The Current Civil Justice System Of England And Wales Essay In your opinion, how adequate is the current Civil Justice System of England and Wales in respect of delivering access to justice? To determine whether the current Civil Justice System of England and Wales is adequate in delivering access to justice, it is necessary to look at the system prior to the Woolf reforms, the implementations made by the Woolf reforms and the implementations made by the Jackson reforms. The Civil Justice System of England and Wales prior to the Woolf reforms Prior to the Woolf reforms, the Civil Justice System of England and Wales was just a civil system as there was no Justice. This is because lawyers were able to charge as much as they liked. This meant that only those who were wealthy would get representation in court as they were the only ones who could afford the absurd amounts charged by lawyers. As the loser pays the cost, those who were not wealthy would find themselves losing more money as they could not afford representation. This meant that the wealthier party did not lose out as their costs would be reimbursed to them. There were also excessive documents which were not needed. This incurred various delays with false starts. The terminology used was archaic and therefore incomprehensible for those with no legal knowledge . This posed a problem for those who had to represent themselves in court. What all of these show is that there was no justice in the civil system prior to the Woolf reforms. What can be said to be the ideal system of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How To Do Things With Words Analysis In How to do Things with Words , Austin tells how some words are actually used in speaking and how others are merely utterances. How are utterances so important if it is only a simple statement that is being made? Why does society put so much value on these statements, such as I do ? First we must establish what exactly an utterance is according to Austin is. According to Austin, an utterance is a spoken word or sound that is made to provide information. Sometime these words are understood other times it may just be a sound that does not make sense at all. A popular utterance that is used heavily is the I do statement used in weddings. Why does such a simple statement have so much weighing on it? These two simple words mean so much to the two people that are getting married. For them it means that they are choosing to spend the rest of their lives together. A question proposed by Austin is why isn t a full statement used at weddings since it is so important? Is it much simpler to use a two worded phrase instead of a longer sentence? I believe that the answer is yes, it is much simpler to use a shorter phrase rather than a much longer statement. This can relate to how in today s society everything is has a much simpler ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has become more relevant with things like social media. Take twitter for example. A person only has 140 characters to use in order to get their statement across. Even on facebook where people have unlimited characters to make a post, nobody wants to sit and read a post that is more than 500 characters long. In order to grab the audience s attention, the speaker must somehow shorten what they are saying, but keep the message they are trying to relay. If someone really wants to make a big statement, they must first figure out how to turn longer statements into much simpler utterances. This is where the texting language comes into ... • 5. Essay on Medicine During the Elizabethan Era Medicine During the Elizabethan Era The medicinal practices and problems of the Elizabethan Era were very important to the people, although they are very different from those of today. There were many different beliefs and diseases, like the Plague. Medicine was not an exact science and was related to Alchemy (Chemistry). Here, some of the many practices and beliefs of the Elizabethan Era will be discussed. One of the most widely known and important of the beliefs was the humours. It was believed that every living creature was composed of four elements, the humours. They were blood, phlegm, choler (or yellow bile), and melancholy (or black bile). It was believed that the overall total combination of these four elements determined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He would also wish to know which part of the body was affected by the illness, because each part was related to a certain star sign or constellation, and he would bear in mind under which star sign each ingredient of certain medicines was under. Alchemy (Early Chemistry) was another science closely related to medicine. Alchemy was the name given to this science in Latin Europe in the 12th century. It was a belief that the human body was closely related to the stars and the heavens. Over hundreds of years, the main goals of alchemists were to turn any metal into gold and discover an elixir which could cure all ills or lead to immortality. This magical elixir was called the philosopher s stone. Alchemy was based on the belief that there are four basic elements fire, earth, air and water and three essentials salt, sulfur and mercury. The metals gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, and tin were all known before the rise of alchemy. The liquid metal, mercury, and the burning rock, sulfur, were also known. Many processes with these elements were known to alchemists. The art of alchemy was heavily spiritual. Alchemists were the first to try out different ideas and experiment with different elements, but because of their intense metaphysical and spiritual beliefs, they didn t develop modern day scientific methods. • 6. Sources Of Bigotry In Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose Twelve Angry Men is a dramatic courtroom play by Reginald Rose published in 1954, which focuses on a jury of twelve men arguing the fate of a young boy, who has been accused of being a murderer. This play cleverly portrays the fact that prejudice exists in society and within every conflict. There are many sources of bigotry in this play, those being mostly character and legal conflict. Many jurors within this play fail to consider all the evidence and take it at face value, this leads to reasonable doubt, which in turn introduces controversy between characters. Legal conflict is introduced by the writer, when juror 8 who believes the court failed to carefully examine the evidence and were to hasty to validate a decision. No. I m saying ... • 7. Of Nervous Conditions By Chinua Achebe s Nervous Conditions THE AUTHENTICITY OF AFRICAN STORIES Africa has been viewed as the antithesis of Europe. It has been undermined as some may say it is underdeveloped. It has been portrayed as the exact opposite of civilised Europe as it is viewed as uncivilised. Africans have been eliminated as a human factor and seen as animals. In this essay I will outline how African literature have been able to reclaim African stories through their authenticity. I will use the novel Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga and two short stories A Private Experience by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and The Prophetess by Njabulo Ndebele to show how Africa has been successfully reclaimed from the stereotypical view of Europeans drawing as a basis for further development from Chinua Achebe s article, An Image of Africa. I will first analyse the novel Nervous Conditions under the theme of gender and patriarchal oppression. The short story A Private Experience will focus on class divisions whilst The Prophetess will focus on beliefs. According to Chinua Achebe, Joseph Conrad in his novella, Heart of Darkness represents Africa in an opposite way to what Africa really is. He says Conrad depicts Africa as different and unknowable in contrast to Europe. He views it as the exact opposite of Europe. Africa is viewed as uncivilised. Joseph Conrad s novella eliminates Africans as a human factor and represents Africa as a blank stage where Europeans enter an implicitly dangerous zone which functions as a plot ... Recording Studio At The Age Of 21 Recording studio the main aim of this business is to offer an affordable practice space and recording studio to young bands and older more established ones as well. I also plan to have a student discount for bands under the age of 21, perhaps a 10% discount. The focus of the business would be mainly on practice space containing high end equipment including brands like marshal and Ashdown; however a large amount of effort and resources will be used creating a small, elite studio recording space with single instrument/vocal pods, 2/3, an eight foot drum recording room, and one large full band room with sufficient mid high end microphones. With the high socio economic group of Harrogate citizens, we as business can charge a similar price but locally to secure as much revenue as possible. In this screen shot you can see that there is only one other studio space in Harrogate, and after looking at the website, all I can tell is that they are a recording studio in Harrogate, they say nothing about pricing, availability or much else. This would imply they don t get much business as they aren t trying very hard to advertise. Though this could imply that the lack of effort is due to a lack of interest, I believe there is definitely enough demand in the Harrogate area, and it only leaves more room in the Harrogate market for my business to occupy. I think that this business will require a location that is enough distance from the city centre so not to disturb other businesses and flats, as when bands are playing music, maybe more than one at a time, a substantial amount of noise pollution will be created. However it does need to be close enough that it is easily accessible and can be seen by the general public easily. Humans resorting to violence and harming others is a daily occurrence, but why? Is it in our nature, are we instinctively violent, and why is it that these acts are not only happening in the United States but worldwide. Although the average person does not leave their home planning on harming somebody that day, under the right circumstances almost every single person in this world will commit an act of violence. When we feel threatened we react to protect ourselves, we would not just sit there and let ourselves be harmed if it can be helped, but the narrator seems to have had no reason to kill the creature. That is why I am asking you why you killed it. You must have had a reason. Did it seem to attack you...or make any sudden motion towards you? (Fast 154) The narrator answers no to both of these questions yet he still felt the need to kill the creature. This is when Fitzgerald goes on to state the only reason the narrator killed it was simply because he is a human and it is his instinct to do so. He then opened the doors to one of the wall cupboards and there stood eight jars of formaldehyde and in each jay a specimen like mine and in each case mutilated by the violence of its death. The peasant revolts were caused by greed and wanting to get rid of serfdom and corrupt leaders in the Holy Roman Empire, and both positive and negative responses were seen. The utility of Apple, however, is that it does provide a framewo rk within which we can discuss the significant changes that have occurred across the global economy in recent decades. Apple s products are assembled in massive factory complexes in China, run by Foxxconn, which also handles the production of consumer elec tronics for many other large players in the industry. The success of Apple Corp can be traced to majorly to some of the economic conditions discussed in this report. In section 1, Apple was able to minimize labour cost in it production by setting up assembly plants in parts of Asia where labour are cheaper compare to the US. In section 2, economic of scale was discussed as the cost advantages exploited by expanding the scale of production in the long run. Or did their suffering somehow help us today? Between the years of 1939 and 1945, also known as the Holocaust; the Nazi s took test subjects from groups of people to perform procedures and experiments on. Unfortunately, all of these so called important tests were exceptionally inhumane. A few examples of the procedures performed were leaving prisoners in freezing cold water for three hours straight or only allowing them to drink pure ocean water for two weeks straight. For the most part, what those German doctors did was unnecessary due to the fact that the outcome was highly predictable. But over the course of the intense studies, a few valid and useful tidbits of information did surface. Some of the research findings from Nazi medical testings during the Holocaust continue to benefit today s modern medical development. One of the many human experiments that the Nazi s performed on Holocaust prisoners was the cold water experiment. Prisoners were immersed into tanks of ice water for hours at a time, (Cohen, et. al). The purpose of this at the time was to find out how long German pilots could survive in the North Sea if their plane was to be shot down (Cohen, et. al). Unfortunately, many of the prisoners died as result of being left in for an absurd amount of time (likely close to three hours). However, the information that was recorded from this specific ... • 27. Relation Between Relation And Social Capital Of The Act Of... Molm, Shaefer, and Collett (2007) conducted a study to determine whether there was any sort of value involved with reciprocity. These authors examine the relationship between what is given (referred to as instrumental values for both reciprocators) and the symbolic values (or the social capital of the act of reciprocation). They suggest that there are three criteria that must be met to measure the value of the relationship, which include recurrence across time, uncertainty in reciprocation, and voluntary (which means that each party must willingly engage in the relationship and the reciprocation). These three criteria are also things that can be used to examine relationship formation. For example, when meeting someone for the first time, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Murray (2005) gives an example of an argument between a couple and how their level of closeness could impact one s willingness to fuel the argument through reciprocating negative remarks. Murray (2005) also looked at certain behaviors that would be reciprocated to avoid sending negative impressions to a potential mate (i.e. feelings of rejection), which include inferences about their partner s perceptions of risk, inferences about their perceptions of risk, and promoting the relationship versus promoting self interest. These notions of preserving the relationship even through perceived threats and risk really help relate how risk reduction reciprocity can be seen in the formation of romantic relationships. This is seen through the reducing perceived risks and threats by cooperating with another individual on a more romantic level. For example, if a guy feels lonely, but another guy feels self conscious about his body, so much so that they may be willing to engage in self harm. Then, it is possible that by getting involved with one another they reduce the risk that they will engage in self harm, and they reciprocate by helping one another to gain confidence. Romantic relationships contain many examples of risk reduction reciprocity, but there is also potential for free riding. For example, free riders could be cheaters, lovers that don t reciprocate affection, partners that desire lust over love, etc..., and with these free riders the risk ... In 1549 Oda Nobunaga, the military Lord, who with the successor of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was successfully able to unified Japan under one strong central government (Brown 1948, 238). Requested an order of five hundred matchlocks to gunsmiths called Kunitomo (Brown 1948, 238). In 1575, in the battle of Nagashino, Nobunaga had an army of approximately 70,000 men, and 3,000 of them were equipped with matchlocks (Brown 1948, 238). Its army was a combination of swords and guns, as at that time they could effectively build tactics using both. Thus, the use of firearms was quickly spread. In 1582 by the time of Nobunaga death, possibly one third of Japans soldiers, who were leaded by military barons, were equipped with firearms (Brown 1948, 238). Also, the victories earned at the begging of the Korean invasion, were largely due to the fact that the Japanese army were equipped with muskets, while the Korean didn t acquire these types of weapons (Brown 1948). • 34. Salt Marshes And Salt Marshes Apparently, marshes are often imagined incorrectly. To some people, they might confuse a marsh to a swamp or to a wetland. Although relative, marshes are only a kind of wetland, which is land where the water level is close to the soil surface or covers the surface for at least part of the year. Marshes, specifically salt marshes, are lush, intertidal grasslands renowned for their productivity (Silliman 2014). Simply, a salt marsh is a coastal ecosystem of grasses characterized by poorly drained mineral soils due to regular flooding of salt water brought in by ocean tides. Since salt marshes serve as estuaries between the land and ocean, people do not realize an important role they play in protection; these coastal marshes are presumed to protect human communities from coastal hazards, such as storms and hurricanes, by providing important ecosystem services. One very important ecosystem service is their role as a buffer in protecting coastlines (Shepard et al. 2011). As humans fail to appreciate and protect these marshes, their continuous impacts on coastal infrastructure would not only negatively impact humans but to the life on the salt marshes as well. Salt marshes are found in the temporal zone on protected shorelines throughout the world and are stressful environments due to their intertidal behaviors. As a result, plants and animals living in salt marshes must have adaptations to deal with the harsh physical stressors, ranging from high salt concentrations, intense heat, and low oxygen in waterlogged soils (Sulliman 2014). Nevertheless, there is a positive trade off: although plants and animals have to overcome these physical obstacles, they get access to abundant resources, protection from predators, and a high potential for both them and their offspring in return. An example of this trade off is investigated with a fish, a mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus, a resident of intertidal salt marshes on the east coast of North America. The study suggests that mummichogs have the ability to alter their habitat use accordingly to environmental factors, such as heat stress and oxygen depletion, to create a predation refuge habitat, which would then allow high growth rates (Halpin 2000). Those unfamiliar with such a powerful force should not test their luck with Mother Nature. Alaska s unpredictable environment in particular is one of the most dangerous to compete with. With temperatures reaching as low as 80 °F, frostbite is very common amongst those who hike in Alaska. In Jack London s To Build a Fire , he uses description, characterization, and foreshadowing to prove Mother Nature is not a force to be reckoned with. Jack London uses description to illustrate a man s foolish determination that ultimately leads to his death. The story begins with an unnamed man marching through the thick Alaskan snow. He is not concerned about the darkness or bone chilling temperatures; he is a newcomer to the Alaskan wilderness. • 38. Dress Codes In School Teens are already restricted on what they can and cannot do on school grounds like what we eat, what classes we take, and what activities we can be in. How we dress should not be one of those reasons. We have a right to what we wear on a day to day basis. I m not saying that we should all be able to dress half naked, but we need to dress how we like. There should be no dress codes because the dress codes are sexest, we need to show our originality, and kids should not have to be taken out of school because their outfit is inappropriate. In schools, they usually just talk to the girls about dress codes. Saying no shoulders showing and our skirts have to be a certain length. Guys on the other hand get away with wearing tank tops to school everyday. Maybe the problem we have isn t the girls accidentally showing a little shoulder here and there, but how the guys think. If girls can control themselves with the guys showing their muscles, then the guys can control themselves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unless the school the child is going to has the child wear a uniform and the child is ok with it, they should be whatever they feel comfortable in. Teens come to school wearing what they do because it represents who they are. Just because our generation dresses differently than others, does not mean that the school district disrupts our learning to make us change. We go to school for learning, not to be told what and what not to wear. School districts are over exaggerating this problem. We are a new generation and they need to be ok with how we dress and act. We shouldn t come to school half naked, but we should have a right to wear what we like and not have teachers or other students judging us. • 39. Luminol Synthesis Lab Report In the experiment, Luminol Synthesis and Chemiluminescence, the purpose is to create luminol using the base mediated reduction of 5 nitro 2,3, dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione and to investigate the chemiluminescence reaction that luminol is known for. 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was reduced using sodium hydrosulfite in a solution of sodium hydroxide under reflux conditions. Acetic acid was used to precipitate the solid luminol product, later the product was collected through vacuum filtration. The luminol product emitted a blue light when a dilute solution of it and sodium hydroxide was mixed with a dilute hydrogen peroxide and potassium ferricyanide solution. The blue light seen correlates to the excited molecules that are dropping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione is the compound being oxidized in the luminol synthesis reaction to produce the phthalate salt. 2. Acetic acid was used to protonate the solution after the 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was reduced from NO2 to NH2. If the equivalents of the two reagents were reversed, NaOH would produce less product since less of the 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione would be deprotonated. 3. Cold water was used to rinse the luminol because it is only soluble in organic solvents, allowing for a better yield of the luminol product. If hot water were to be used the amount of product would be decreased, because hot water has a higher tendency to dissolve products, yielding less luminol solid. 4. Luminol is dissolvable in organic solvents such as, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane but it is insoluble in water. If an organic solvent were used instead, the luminol would dissolve which would result in the decrease of the yielded product. 5. The difference between chemiluminescence and fluorescence is the origin of energy used for the light emission. The energy source for fluorescence arises from the excited electron falling back to its ground state, emitting light. This energy is emitted as light when it is absorbed at a higher frequency and then released at a lower frequency visible to humans. The energy source of chemiluminescence comes from the breaking, forming, or restructuring of chemical bonds in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. History of the Holy Quran HISTORY OF THE HOLY QURAN The Quran is the backbone of Islam. On this Sacred Book of Allaah depends the Islamic call, state, society and the civilisation of the Muslim world. It is the last Divine revelation, which was sent down to Prophet Muhammad , the last and final of all Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention. His task was to convey the message of worshipping the One God, Allaah, without ascribing any partners to Him. The Noble Quran, which is the source of guidance and mercy to mankind, is divided into one hundred and fourteen (114) Soorahs (chapters) of varying lengths. Ninety three chapters were revealed in Makkah, while the remaining twenty one were revealed in Madeenah. The first revelation that the Prophet received was ... On the other hand, Madeenan revelations were meant to translate the faith into action and give details of the Divine Law. Allaah will forever preserve the Quran against all attempts to destroy or corrupt it. Being guarded by Allaah, it will always remain pure. There does not exist a single copy with any variation from the recognised text. Any attempt of alteration has resulted in failure. Upon the command of the Prophet his Companions would write down what was revealed of the Noble Quran. They used, for this purpose, palm branches stripped of leaves, parchments, shoulder bones, stone tablets, etc. About forty people were involved in this task. Among them was Zayd Ibn Thaabit who showed his work to the Prophet . Thus, the Quran was correctly arranged during the Prophet s life, but it was not yet compiled into one book. In the meantime, most of the Prophet s Companions memorised the Quran. When Abu Bakr became Caliph after the Prophet died, a large number of the Companions were killed during the War of Apostasy. Umar Ibn Al Khattaab went to the Caliph and discussed the idea of compiling the Quran into one volume. He was disturbed, as most of those who memorised it had died. Then, Abu Bakr called for Zayd and commissioned him to collect the Quran into one book, which became known as the Mus haf. After Zayd accomplished this great task and ... I have no personal influences or biases that affected my opinion of the film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no overtones that should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise.
