Babylon Short Story Summary
Babylon Short Story
Tyree Turner, David Gebhart, Raul Garcia
In the year 1792 B.C. Babylon introduced their sixth king of Babylon Empire, King Hammurabi who
assumed the throne from his father Sin Muballit. The rule of Hammurabi and his strict, often extreme
no tolerance policy had begun. Though his punishments of the accused and guilty occasionally seemed
appropriate, many felt Hammurabi s methods were inhumane although his intentions give the
impression that it was in good spirit. As the sun began to set behind the temple to Marduk the
induction ceremony of the new King of Babylon presented his power to rule by introducing the list of
laws that were set to be effective immediately. Here, Hammurabi proclaims that he wants to make
justice visible in the land, to destroy the wicked person and the evil doer, that the strong might not
injure the weak. He goes on to say that the laws themselves uphold compassion, and protect widows,
orphans and others from being harmed or exploited by those seeking to take advantage of those who
may not be able to defend themselves. Hammurabi clearly understood that to accomplish his goal, he
needed one universal set of laws for all of the diverse peoples he conquered. Therefore, he made
aware to his subjects that prior to his ascension to king that he sent legal experts throughout his
kingdom to gather existing laws. These laws were revised and some were changed or disregarded
before compiling his final list of 282 laws. Hammurabi made known

David Foster Wallace Consider The Lobster Summary
Is it morally right to boil a lobster alive for culinary enjoyment? David Foster Wallace displays his
confusion on this subject in his informative essay titled Consider the Lobster. . He informs you about
the famed Maine Lobster Festival, where more than 25,000 pounds of fresh caught lobster is prepared
and consumed. He then goes into detail about the debate on the morality of such an event. There are a
lot of questions raised in this essay, and the lobster is the focus of all of them. Wallace asks people to
investigate their own feelings when he asks them to consider how comfortable it is for people to boil
lobsters alive, how much pain the lobster is in when it is being prepared, and what it is like to be in the
shoes of this crustacean. The purpose of this essay was to inform the people and get them to consider
the integrity of our most common cooking method when it comes to the lobster. First of all, the
experience of boiling a creature alive tends to feel quite uncomfortable for a lot of people, and there s
no avoiding that. Wallace says that it s not just that lobsters get boiled alive, it s that you do it yourself
or at least it s done specifically for you, on site (703). This tends to feel almost selfish due to the fact
that the animal is suffering for your enjoyment. To make matters worse, the intimacy of this process is
at a maximum when performed in your own home. Here, you get to watch as the lobster attempts to
cling to the sides of the container as you

Bootlegging and Al Capone Essay
BOOTLEGGING In 1919, the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, this amendment made the
consumption and sell of alcohol illegal. A group of people referred to as moral reformers felt that
banning the sell and consumption of alcohol would better protect the lives of people as well as make
them better (Rose). Businesses, such as industrial businesses, believed that it would better productivity
if the workers could remain sober. The Volsted Act was passed shortly after the Eighteenth
Amendment to make sure it was enforced since local authorities did not do such; there were only
fifteen hundred agents to enforce the law and the act was also underfunded. Therefore, the Prohibition
was not enforced well enough and the organized crime rates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

bootlegging and he often expressed it and showed his opposition towards the Prohibition Act. He
stated that, Prohibition (had) made nothing but trouble . He is basically saying that he is not the
problem with the crime in Chicago but the government is, for enforcing the law. He also expressed
how, When (he) sell(s) liquor, it is bootlegging; when (his) patrons serve it on Lake Shore Drive, it is
called hospitality. Now he is saying how he feels the government is discriminating against how
alcohol is distributed. Capone is a criminal who s trying to put reason behind his illegal actions

Al Capone was notorious for his bootlegging and annihilating his competition; in order to do that, he
had to kill them. Before Capone became the big time bootlegger/ murderer/ assassination coordinator,
he had already taken a couple of lives. Capone had begun working for Torrio as an enforcer, bouncer,
and bartender; he was in a bar fight that got him his scar and his nickname Scarface . Shortly after this
incident, in 1919, in New York he was arrested because there were suspicions that he

Cell Membrane Structure
1 Describe the normal structure and functioning of cell membranes, and explain how they compare to
the membranes relating to a specific abnormality in cystic fibrosis?
All cells have a cell membrane. The structure of membranes is formed from a double layer of
phospholipids with proteins floating in it. The proteins are embedded on the surface and inside or
bridge the double layers of phospholipids. This structure is called a mosaic model. The main function
of cell membranes is to provide protection and support for the cell and they also control what enter
and exit the cell to maintain internal balance, called homeostasis. There are two types of a membrane
protein: integral proteins and peripheral proteins. The integral membrane proteins are ... Show more

The cystic fibrosis affects the exocrine gland, which are organs that secrete mucus. It normally
produces thin, slippery secretions such as mucus, sweat, tears and digestive juice. The organs can be
affected by cystic fibrosis are sweat glands, respiratory system, digestive system and reproductive
system.
Sweat glands: The individual who suffers from cystic fibrosis, the amount of body salts lost in the
sweat are higher than the normal people. This can cause problems during times of increased sweating.
Such as hot weather.
Respiratory system: The lining of the respiratory tract which made of tiny, hair like cells called the
cilia. Their function is to keep the lung clean and clear from foreign substances and mucus. The
person who suffers from cystic fibrosis, the cilia can not easily remove the thick and sticky mucus out
of the air passages in the lung. The mucus clogs the air passages, causing a chronic cough and lung
infections. Repeated of lung infections can lead to damage to the lung and leading to not get enough
oxygen into the body.
Digestive system: The thick and sticky mucus blocks the pancreatic ducts and preventing the enzymes
from reaching in the small intestine to digest food. The result is incomplete digestion and poor
absorption of food

Homeless College Students
Do you know the reason why so many college students in the United States are currently homeless?
As of the moment there are thousands of college students roaming around the streets, due to not
having the necessary resources they need. Now days, it is common for a college student to be left
homeless, be evicted, thrown out their homes, or found living in a abandoned buildings which isn t
suitable as a living environment. These students don t have the available funds to be able to pay for
somewhere to live in or know when their next meal will be. Every college student in order to be
successful needs a safe environment that they can call home and get there regular nutrients.
It is often said, that for a student to actually be able to excel in their studies. They must have a proper
nutritional diet, a place to rest and work on their studies. Yet, there is currently 14% of all college
students living among the United States without a home. It is most commonly due to rent being so
expensive that students cannot simply afford. Which later leads to some of these students who are
facing financial trouble to become homeless. Which not only leaves the student without a home, but
vulnerable to many other factors. For example, infection diseases, unsafe conditions, to even bad
weather which can all affect the health of a student. In today s society when people think about a
homeless person they think they ask for money for the most common saying homeless being drug

Similarities Between The Scarlet Ibis And Simon Birch
The Scarlet Ibis and Simon Birch taught many lessons within their stories, Al Franken, a writer once
said, Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life
lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can
learn from. Despite the fact that both The Scarlet Ibis and Simon Birch are parallel they share many
distinctions. The disparity between these two individual stories is setting, characters, and lessons. In
both The Scarlet Ibis and Simon Birch, both boys push their limits to the point of death; these two
characters have strong will power. At the beginning of the story the brother of Doodle is having a

Operas of Mozart Don Giovanni Essay
Donna Anna, Donna Elvira Zerlino
Mozart s Don Giovanni
The choice of the Three women of Don Giovanni can give a good understanding of the type of music
which was used to create an opera in the 18th century Italy. The opera buffa was a comic opera with a
funny story line and light music. Mozart wrote at different levels. In order to have full understanding
of the women s roles, it is necessary to understand the social context of women in the 18 century. In
Kristi Brown s Mozart s Women she compared Donna Anna to a misfortunate Spanish maiden. It was
very common for composers to take the style of where they were living at the time and write in that
genre of music. Donna Anna was daughter who was to be married. The role was ... Show more content

His wife would forgive him for his philander with servant girls but not with educated or artistic
(Stafford 119) (Paumgartner, Mozart, 273). As this showed the sexual freedom of the 18th century
Italy, it was quite common to have extra marital affairs for both men and women. Discretion was the
only rule that was demanded by the upper society to which Don Giovanni never adhered. Donna
Elvira had a love hate relationship with him. He would not have been able to access her rooms.
Donna Anna would have had a waiting room with a man servant or her lady in waiting attending to
her. It would have been highly unlikely that she, who had a fiancé, put herself in a position of having
truly been violated. This is where Mozart is making the point of a woman having to put on social
graces. Donna Anna shows her intelligence in her coming down in a fury and singing in the duet with
Don Octavio how she wants revenge . (Act I) It was not a physical affront, it was an affront to her
intellectual dignity that he should be able to reach her inner sanctuary. In a more symbolic
interpretation, perhaps Mozart was doubting Donna Anna as a bride or maybe the opposite. Mozart
liked a strong, intelligent woman who set the rules. Donna Anna will not get married until Don
Octavio revenges her father. He shows himself to be weaker than she is. This is usually the role of the
man, but Mozart reverses the male role as a female role which is a theme he often

Character, Morals, Integrity Essay
Character, Morals, Integrity
Morals, character, integrity, what do these words mean....actually, the question is, do you have them. A
man named Dwight Moody once said, Character is what you are in the dark. You cannot see your
morals, character, or integrity, these are only shown as your values. Someone could only show their
own values, which are very important to themselves and everyone else. Integrity is the firm adherence
to a code of especially moral or artistic values. The way you show your integrity, character, and
morals or how they are effect you in either a negative or positive way. There are many causes to how
your values are. So as you know, integrity is very important and it is important to have it.
First of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Laura stated, integrity effects you by either being honest or not. If you are honest, then you have
integrity. People who say that they are going to do something do it. You can now see that character,
morals, and integrity are very important.
Secondly, people may think that their values may not affect them, but they re wrong, they affect them
a lot. Since character describes how you are and what your moral strengths are, having bad character
could make people dislike you because of how you are. On the other hand, if you have good character,
then more people would see how good of a person you are and even more people would like you.
Morals sort of describe the way you make decisions, so having bad morals could guide your life down
the drain, while having good morals could guide your life minute by minute toward noble goals.
Integrity is also very important. Having bad integrity could make you very non trustworthy to others.
Having good integrity would make you very trustworthy to others. Knowing how important they are,
you should always have good or even better character, morals, and integrity.
Also, there are many causes for how your character, morals, and integrity are. One cause could of
course be yourself. By hanging out with the right people and making good decisions, you could have
good values. Yet hanging out with the wrong people and making bad decisions would be having bad
values. Another cause may

Benefits Of The TTC In Toronto
TTC, standing for Toronto Transit Commission is a public transport agency which benefits and
transports 2.7 million people daily by using different vehicles and services in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. Some citizens of Toronto argue how the TTC pollutes and makes the environment a horrid
and dreadful place, while it is actually the opposite because the TTC can help reduce the
environmental damage in the city, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and benefit Toronto to make it a
safer, significant, and a convenient city.
The TTC uses many vehicles to support it, such as buses, subways, streetcars, and paratransit services
to help people who need to go places in Toronto. Specifically, the TTC drives 2.7 million people daily.
Those people include adults, elderly, and children. The TTC has a blue seating called the Priority
Seating opposed to the ones who have disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women. The TTC is also
very helpful and useful to many other people especially for the ones who do not have any vehicles or
any type of transportation.
Unfortunately, the TTC is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere than there already is. To prevent such pollution people
should start by using the TTC because it will reduce the number of trips by car which equals less
greenhouse gas emissions. The atmospheric pollutants and gases caused by fuel being burnt are
formed into a gas like texture called smog. The Ontario Medical Association has calculated that 1 900
people die each year in the province because of the smog exposure. Therefore, the TTC is trying to
make Toronto a cleaner place by reducing and preventing the environmental damage in the city. By
using the TTC, it can also save 70 000 of fuel and remove tonnes of pollutants effectively from the
atmosphere every

This movie is a great movie for me because it shows that Gulliver is an educated man by his schooling

Author Biography:
Jonathan swift born on (30 November 1667 19 October 1745) was an Anglo Irish satirist, essayist,
political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St
Patrick s Cathedral, Dublin. He is remembered for works such as Gulliver s Travels, A Modest
Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier s Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against
Abolishing Christianity, and A Tale of a Tub. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the
English language, and is less well known for his poetry. Swift originally published all of his works
under pseudonyms such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M.B. Drapier or anonymously. He is
also known for being a master of two styles of satire: the Horatian and Juvenalian styles.
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was the second child and only son of Jonathan Swift
(1640 1667) and his wife Abigail Erick (or Herrick), of Frisby on the Wreaked His father, a native of
Goodrich, Herefordshire, accompanied his brothers to Ireland to seek their fortunes in law after their
Royalist father s estate was brought to ruin during the English Civil War. Swift s father died at Dublin
before he was born, and his mother returned to England. He was left in the care of his influential
uncle, Godwin, a close friend and confidante of Sir John Temple, whose son later employed

Different Sources of Variation in Marriage and Mating...
Marriage is a fundamental practice that influences village dynamics and political processes in many
societies in past and present human cultures. Not only is marriage a process that supports human
kinship systems, it allows for alliances and reciprocity systems between groups that create variation in
human social organization (Walker et al. 2011). This paper explores the sources of variation in
marriage and mating systems in two very different societies, the !Kung San and the Yanomamo, in
terms of the vastly different environments each of them inhabit. The !Kung San, a traditional nomadic
hunter gatherer society, reside in the Dobe area on the edge of the Kalahari desert of Botswana
(Shostak 1981, p.7). Due to the demanding environment of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This imbalance is further intensified due to raids and warfare caused by the lack of women, resulting
in the abduction of marriageable women from other villages, often resulting in hostilities between
groups and fueling warfare (Chagnon 2009, p.190).
Choosing an in law in !Kung San society is primarily arranged by the parents of the woman based on
marital status, hunting ability, age, and willingness to accept the responsibilities of family life
(Shostak 1981, p.116). The lack of violence and conflict between villages allows !Kung San parents to
travel large distances to find an acceptable partner who is not of close relatedness to the girl being
married (Shostak 1981, p.115). The almost universal taboo in modern day industrial societies
prohibiting marriages between closely related kin is also followed in !Kung San society and the easiest
way to avoid marrying your cousin is by marrying someone from a distant group (Shostak 1981,
p.115; Allen et al. 2011). Close kinship systems tend to keep families close together so they can all
benefit off the same resources. However, in harsh and unpredictable environments, like that faced by
the !Kung, flexibility of movement created by non consanguineous unions and bilateral kinship
systems is essential in creating reciprocity systems that allow access to resources that are limiting and
seasonal (Allen et al. 2011). Non consanguineous

The Dynasty Of Chinese History Essay
The Six Dynasty period in Chinese historiography is often classified with moments of conflict, revolt,
strife, famine, disunity, and not innovation. Historians and academics categorize the period as a
placeholder between the more significant Han China 206 BCE to 220 CE and the Tang dynasty 618 to
907 CE. Understandably, Han China s military, infrastructure, and civil capabilities were rivalled only
by that of the Roman Empire, and even then, the Han dynasties administrative capabilities were
rivalled by none. The Tang period is widely considered to be the high point of Chinese culture and
civilization, where cosmopolitan China emerged with force vastly shaping China for centuries to
come. The significance of the Han and Tang dynasties is not in question, it is the lack of importance
that historians confer on the Six Dynasties period. Admittedly the Six Dynasty period in Chinese
history can be categorized as a warring period, in which China did not develop unilaterally, but
separately along fractured lines (split both north south, and east west). Much like the European
medieval period, there are few accessible sources from early medieval china, and because of this,
China s six dynasty period is brushed over as a period of little advancement and innovation. The Dark
Ages in Europe use to receive the same scholarly interpretation as a period of stagnation.
Agreeably a topic of righting historical wrongs is too large for too few pages, as such, the scope of this
paper is not

All Of Us Have Had One
All of us have had one. You know, that one date we wish would have never happened. That one date
that we only tell to another soul after several weeks of mulling it over in self doubt as to whether or
not you should ever speak of it again, or just let it listlessly fade from memory. For me, this date
happened on July 6, 2007 ironically, about two weeks before I met the woman who is presently my
wife. Alison and I had met online. With my busy work schedule, it made it impossible for me to find a
girl the traditional way, and so a buddy of mine helped me create an online profile with OkCupid. The
website was actually quite fun to play around with as it had some user quizzes, and a pretty interesting
profile building experience. As suggested by the website, within a few days someone had already e
mailed me. Honestly, it took a while to weed out the people I would blatantly not be interested in
versus those that had potential, but finally I came across a profile that I thought would blend well with
my values, likes, dislikes, etc and so I sent her a message. Two days later I received a response and we
began chatting. After two days of instant messaging the good ole fashioned way on AIM, we decided
we wanted to meet one other. We set a date at Applebee s for that coming Friday night at 7:30 PM.
This was the first date I had been on in a couple of months since my previous relationship ended, so I
was definitely nervous. I could tell because it took me more than 2

Design Of An Exhibition Gallery
Some are like sea serpents, others like office cubicles, but regardless the shape, all art museum
galleries intend to give viewers a certain experience. The flowing into, out of, and around gallery
spaces within an art museum can positively or negatively affect the patron s experience.
Unfortunately, when the design of an exhibition gallery negatively affects a viewer, a disservice is
done to the artists and culture of the artworks on view. On view in the permanent collection of the
Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas is the exhibition of several seventeenth and eighteenth
century artworks with Spanish influences, accompanied by a single Japanese artifact of the same era.

The grouping of these paintings is quite clear from a historical and visual standpoint. The paintings
each feature warm colors with a splash of vibrancy, apparent subjects, perhaps due to their
monochromatic backgrounds, and also display the same sort of calm and collected subject matter that
much of Spanish Baroque art concentrated on. The Wine Flask, whose creator is unknown, fits in with
warm color scheme and dates back around the same time as the rest of the exhibition, however it has a
known origin of Japan.
Entering the gallery from the main corridor, the patron has two openings to choose from, one on the
left and one on the right, due to the placement of a single white vista wall. With a single exit way on
the side parallel to the entryways, a bench placed in the center of the gallery, and no floor designs
suggesting a specific route, the intended circulatory path of this exhibition is unclear. To view each
artwork within the exhibition and exit into the next gallery, the viewer is forced to travel the same path
they came at least once. Having an undefined pathway in the layout of this gallery leads to further
issues in the exhibition. The most apparent issue is that the viewer is unable to immediately recognize
if there is a focal piece in the gallery. Being in a rectangular room with two parallel white vista walls
and the remaining walls being featured in the same beige stone material with no single focal lighting

The Validity Of Aphorism
There exists a common phenomenon in my high school that whenever someone forgot to bring his
ruler and one of his classmates kindly lent him once, he would probably not bring his ruler ever after
and kept borrowing from other classmates. This is widely accepted as and explained by the aphorism
Give a man an inch and he ll take a mile , which indicates that when you are generous to someone, he
will demand more. In other words, this saying points out that people are never satisfied. In fact, not
only does this aphorism have implications in our daily lives, it also shed light on a broader context in
social science such as unemployment insurance policy. In order to determine the validity of this
aphorism in the society today, we could conduct an experiment targeting the college students who are
randomly assigned into two groups, and examine how they would respond differently after they
received a different endowment of money.

Descriptive Essay On Destitute Beauty
Destitute Beauty In the large city of New York, there are many beautiful people. I am not one of them.
I can pass hours away sitting in a coffee shop in a tall seat next to the window, watching the beauties
pass, seeing my reflection against them even more bloated and lumpy than normal. Some of them
notice me. Most of them don t. It doesn t matter. Like I said, New York is a large city, I ll never see
them again. And anyway, I m sure they re used to people staring. How could they not be, they draw
people with their large, black rimmed eyes and lean figures and cutting jawbones like dogs to the
enticing smell of meat. I am just another dog, one they will forget in moments. And when the sun sets,
and the beautiful people fade away and the crowd becomes faceless and intoxicated, that s when I
leave, and where I stay until the sun rises, becoming one with the pulse and throb of the mass.
Promising myself that the next day, yes, the next day, I ll get a job, ignore the cold, gorgeous people,
succeed even with my lumps, and papery skin, and eyes that are just a little too far apart. And the next
day, with my headache, I return. Today is yesterday and the day before. The sun is especially bright
now, almost passive aggressively bright, shining smugly through the haze that buries the city,
bouncing into the small cafe in which I spend most of my time. It s supposed to be homey, with nearly
dead plants hanging skeletal by the windows and overstuffed couches near a coffee table. I sit in the
uncomfortable seat that s almost comically tall, at the only table next to a window. The barista Ellen is
chatting happily with a customer, she barely notices me anymore. Which is fine by me. A woman, with
long legs and hollows under her cheekbones, struts past the café, a mere foot away from me. She
doesn t notice my stare. It s a funny thing. People talk all they want about feeling when people stare at
them, getting goosebumps and looking around frantically for their admirer. But either it isn t true, or I
m not important enough for my stare to mean anything, hold any weight. Searching through the
crowd, I find parts and pieces that I want most, playing a game I often play. Her taut stomach, her long
legs, her bright eyes,

What Is The 18th Amendment
The Eighteenth Amendment was proposed by the U.S. senate on December 18, 1917. Finally
established and approved on January 16, 1919 by a 36th state, the amendment was authorized as a part
of the constitution. America became dry one year later on January 17, 1920 by the terms of the
amendment. On November 18, 1918, prior to ratification of the 18th Amendment, the Congress
approved the Wartime Prohibition Act, which prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages having an
alcohol content of greater than 2.75%. On June 30, 1919 the Wartime Prohibition Act was authorized
and marking July 31st of 1919 as the Thirsty First The Volstead act was authorized on October 28.

The Americans With Disabilities Act
Since it was signed into law in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been a challenge
for employers to implement. This law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in both
public and public businesses. There were numerous lawsuits where disabled employees have charged
that employers have failed to accommodate his or her needs in the workplace. However, Supreme
Court decisions interpreted the act in a way that made it difficult to prove that an impairment was a
disability thereby ruling in favor of an employer. As a result, the ADAAmendments Act of 2008
(ADAA) was enacted to clarify the definition of disability (United States, Department of Justice, Civil
Rights Division, 2014, para. 1). Companies from every industry struggle to ensure that it meets the
requirements to ensure that no disparity between individuals with a disability and those without a
disability. In Accommodations of Patients with Disabilities in Primary Care: A Mixed Methods Study
of Practice Administrators, the author addresses the disparities in how health care facilities treat
individuals with disabilities compared to individuals with no disability (Pharr, 2013). This paper will
summarize the findings of this study and the impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the
ADAAmendments Act of 2008 on health care. In her study, Pharr surveyed a group of primary care
administrators because their responsibilities usually has oversight of facility operations

The Use of the Real Options Theory in
Financial Management and Financial Modeling
Introduction
The presence of real options within any business venture sets up the ability for institutions to pinpoint
the strategic options and opportunities that are embedded in their everyday projects and investments.
In viewing these options and in understanding that each of these has the ability to have a material
impact on both cash flow and risk, it is essential that any company or entity dealing with financial
management fully understand the Real Options Theory, especially in its regard to financial
management and modeling within a business or institution. In understanding the issues that come into
play when the Real Options Theory is utilized, as well as viewing the available literature on the topic,
one can better apply the theory to first hand experiences in the workplace. In doing so, an individual
and financial managers in particular can begin to better understand which applications of the theory
are essential to the workplace in order to maximize total effect and overall profitability. In
understanding these facets, it becomes clear that the Real Options Theory provides financial managers
of any entity that employs it better strategic thinking and tools for financial analysis, therefore
imparting business success in the long run.

Character Analysis Of Barttleby By Fitzgerald s Bartleby
Bartleby begins from the narrators perspective. He is elderly and works on wall street. A description of
the narrator allows the author to create the setting for the story without needing to introduce Bartleby
in the beginning. This allows the structure to begin slowly and then speed up as it gains more focus
and direction once an opinion on Bartleby is presented from the perspective of multiple characters.
The narrator attempts to portray himself as humble by stating that he did not speak in vanity but
instead spoke the truth when he described John Jacob Astor opinion of him. The author shows that the
narrator is a calmer individual and rarely outwardly shows his displeasure with something. Being that
the title of the story is Bartleby, the reader may be drawn to question why the narrator is discussed in
such detail in the first few pages of the passage. Other than the narrator, there are four main characters
in the story, each with a different nickname. The narrator uses Turkey, one of his clerks, to give more
description about his own age that is, somewhere not far from sixty. He seems to want to separate
himself from his age and this is indicated when he states that he is very sad to behold an elderly man
like Turkey. This sentence makes it seem as though the two men are not the same age. Turkey is
forced to tell him that they were both getting old.
Nippers is much younger and the narrator does not feel as though he needs to hide this fact. This
shows that

Comparing Cave Prisoners And Neo Leaving The Matrix
Once the cave prisoners and Neo are released from their state of ignorance, they start to become more
understanding of the outside world, as represented by the cave dwellers escaping the cave, and Neo
leaving the matrix. As the prisoners are in the cave, watching the shadows pass on the wall, one of
their prisoners is released from the shackles. Because of his natural curiosity, the prisoners turns his
head to look outside the cave. Whilst looking outside the cave, the light from outside and will cause
him to suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will not be able to see the realities of
which in his former state he had seen the shadows (33 35). Because of the looming darkness always
present in the cave, the bright light of the sun blinds the prisoner momentarily. ... Show more content

In the prisoner s past state, the shadows were his reality, but when the prisoner goes outside for the
first time do the shadows of the past slip away and become a ghost of the world he once knew. The
prisoners leaving the cave and experiencing a new world can be similar to how Neo reacts once he
leaves the cave and enters the matrix. When Neo first meets Morpheus, he is given the option of
choosing a red pill or a blue pill. The red pill represents the world outside of the Matrix, and Neo s
possibly last chance to escape this world where he currently resides in. The blue pill represents Neo s
desire to stay in the matrix, where everything he knows is. Neo ends up taking the red pill, and is

Essay about A Deep, Musical Connection
The folk genre has origins all the way back to the 19th century, which in many ways is mirrored by
many popular genres in modern musical genres. To make it easy folk music is merely, ballads and
songs which are composed and conveyed vocally, without being written. (Mclean 12) Though what we
distinguish folk today as stylistically very different to what folk was during the 19th century, at its
basic form, it still holds the same standards and concepts, describing the simpler times. Through
vigorous research, it s hard to overlook the past and expansion of folk music originating from the
south, and how it could help understand the significance for observing and expanding the dynamics of
southern race relationships. Equally, race ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, its past is well recognized, whatever has remained deserted up to today is the psychological
inspection of the association among this technique of prevalent philosophy plus a significant mental,
common and historical matters and circumstances which provided intensification towards it and is
expressed by it. One major reason folk was special in the African American culture is because it s a
likeness of the distinct southern culture, past and social organization on the instruction and of
confidences, doubts, politics also arrogances displayed by the people on the early stages of
segregation. The composition of the African, English and Scottish mixed rapidly and effortlessly in the
similar progression through groups mixed demographically and socially to form the essential culture.
The composition from Germany and France modified justly with the folk custom. It seems that certain
musical methods such as polkas from Europe, the melodies of the Hindu, Arabic and French settlers,
practiced the same affiliation to the pleasing music essential all of the settlers practiced with regard to
the essential philosophy; an assortment based on choice.
African custom, though, is an exclusive and isolated circumstance and the association between the
white music styles fused with those of blacks, predominantly in the southern states, reflects negative
race associations. Today, the south, after all

Essay on The Deeper Meaning of Frost’s Tuft of Flowers
The Deeper Meaning of Frost s Tuft of Flowers
Robert Lee Frost published his first book of poems entitled A Boy s Will in 1913. From this collection
come one of several poems that critics and anthologists alike highly regard as both lyrical and
autobiographical in nature. One such critic, James L. Potter, in his book entitled [The] Robert Frost
Handbook, explains [that] Frost wore a mask in public much of the time, concealing his personal
problems and complexities from his reading and listening audiences (Potter 48). Through The Tuft of
Flowers, a kind of lyrical soliloquy, Frost half intentionally reveals his personal views on the theme of
fellowship (Potter 48).
In the first of three transitions the speaker, most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speaker notes that the butterfly flies as far as eye could see / (but) on tremulous wing came back
to me (17 18). Here, the butterfly seems to parallel the thoughts the speaker has about the field and the
delight it brought both of them the day before. The reader can infer from this comparison that Frost,
like the butterfly, has enjoyed great beauty, joy, and love at certain times during his life but because
the grass chokes the beauty in the field, the good times are beset with feelings of loneliness and grief.
The butterfly eventually turns and leads the speaker to a tall tuft of flowers beside a brook (22). The
significance of the flowers and the brook can not be overlooked, because at this place in the poem the
mood suddenly swings from pessimism to optimism. It seems that God was trying to send a message
to Frost that the field of life can be filled with beauty and he might not always be alone in his life s
work (22). This couplet of the poem is significant because it gives us a clue to how God reveals to the
speaker that, although the field of life appears barren, a brook nourishes the ground to give life to the
beauty he possesses. In addition, through God s infinite wisdom and mercy, Frost s loneliness and
grief will someday again turn back into fellowship and joy.

Rosalind Franklin Contributions
You look at science (or at least talk of it) as some sort of demoralizing invention of man, something
apart from real life, and which must be cautiously guarded and kept separate from everyday existence.
But science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Said Rosalind Franklin, one of the
greatest female scientists, in a letter to her father. Franklin is saying that science should not be
interfered by human civilization, but human civilization needs and relies on science. This is significant
because Franklin discovered so much for the human race through science, hence what she said,
science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Though many might not recognize her
name, Rosalind Franklin changed the world of biology forever. Born on July 25, 1920 in Notting Hill,
London, to a family that was jewish, but she believed in no such thing. Rosalind Franklin was a very
intelligent child; she excelled in school always ahed of where she was supposed to be. By the time
Franklin was fifteen she already knew she wanted to be a scientist. She was taught at North London
Collegiate school and went to college at Newnham Collage where she studied chemistry. Moving on,
Rosalind Franklin, was best know for discovering the structure of DNA, but what most do not know
she was did much more. For example, she studied coal utilization, and x ray diffraction. She actually
was the teacher and mentor for Raymond Gosling who created the first visible x ray photo. With

Mine Okubo Summary
In 1942 President Franklin D Roosevelt issued an order to create Internment Camps for people of
Japanese descent living in the USA. Sixty two percent of these people were US Citizens and some of
them had only 1/16th Japanese Ancestry. One hundred and thirty thousand people were relocated to
these camps without any proof of wrongdoing or just trial. Mine Okubo was one of these people and
despite the inhumane conditions and unjustness of her imprisonment, she made sketches and wrote
about her experience in the camps. Later she released a graphic novel titled Citizen 13660. The way
that Japanese Americans Behaved and Experienced the Interment Camp programs reveals elements of
their culture and community. Interestingly, the style of writing in this book is filled with some blunt
comedy, along with detailed black and white sketches. The timeline of the book starts from when she
was living in Europe, then migrates the USA and thereafter is inducted into the camps. The whole
reason that the Internment Camps were created was because of irrational fears of the US public and
government towards Japanese people. Some of the earlier lines in here book show the attitude of
Caucasians toward her and her people. She talks about the events before she went to the camps with
people and the media using slurs and the initial voluntary migration ... Show more content on

For these people who stayed, they valued their community over everything. They could move
somewhere else, they could abandon everything but the US at the time was still full of racism. After

and property, along with the predators who took advantage of this. On her way to the camps she
mentions a group of Japanese university students singing on the bus, showing a sense of community
while uncertain about their

  • 2. Babylon Short Story Summary Babylon Short Story Tyree Turner, David Gebhart, Raul Garcia In the year 1792 B.C. Babylon introduced their sixth king of Babylon Empire, King Hammurabi who assumed the throne from his father Sin Muballit. The rule of Hammurabi and his strict, often extreme no tolerance policy had begun. Though his punishments of the accused and guilty occasionally seemed appropriate, many felt Hammurabi s methods were inhumane although his intentions give the impression that it was in good spirit. As the sun began to set behind the temple to Marduk the induction ceremony of the new King of Babylon presented his power to rule by introducing the list of laws that were set to be effective immediately. Here, Hammurabi proclaims that he wants to make justice visible in the land, to destroy the wicked person and the evil doer, that the strong might not injure the weak. He goes on to say that the laws themselves uphold compassion, and protect widows, orphans and others from being harmed or exploited by those seeking to take advantage of those who may not be able to defend themselves. Hammurabi clearly understood that to accomplish his goal, he needed one universal set of laws for all of the diverse peoples he conquered. Therefore, he made aware to his subjects that prior to his ascension to king that he sent legal experts throughout his kingdom to gather existing laws. These laws were revised and some were changed or disregarded before compiling his final list of 282 laws. Hammurabi made known ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. David Foster Wallace Consider The Lobster Summary Is it morally right to boil a lobster alive for culinary enjoyment? David Foster Wallace displays his confusion on this subject in his informative essay titled Consider the Lobster. . He informs you about the famed Maine Lobster Festival, where more than 25,000 pounds of fresh caught lobster is prepared and consumed. He then goes into detail about the debate on the morality of such an event. There are a lot of questions raised in this essay, and the lobster is the focus of all of them. Wallace asks people to investigate their own feelings when he asks them to consider how comfortable it is for people to boil lobsters alive, how much pain the lobster is in when it is being prepared, and what it is like to be in the shoes of this crustacean. The purpose of this essay was to inform the people and get them to consider the integrity of our most common cooking method when it comes to the lobster. First of all, the experience of boiling a creature alive tends to feel quite uncomfortable for a lot of people, and there s no avoiding that. Wallace says that it s not just that lobsters get boiled alive, it s that you do it yourself or at least it s done specifically for you, on site (703). This tends to feel almost selfish due to the fact that the animal is suffering for your enjoyment. To make matters worse, the intimacy of this process is at a maximum when performed in your own home. Here, you get to watch as the lobster attempts to cling to the sides of the container as you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A group of people referred to as moral reformers felt that banning the sell and consumption of alcohol would better protect the lives of people as well as make them better (Rose). Businesses, such as industrial businesses, believed that it would better productivity if the workers could remain sober. The opera buffa was a comic opera with a funny story line and light music. Mozart wrote at different levels. In order to have full understanding of the women s roles, it is necessary to understand the social context of women in the 18 century. As this showed the sexual freedom of the 18th century Italy, it was quite common to have extra marital affairs for both men and women. Discretion was the only rule that was demanded by the upper society to which Don Giovanni never adhered. Donna Elvira had a love hate relationship with him. He would not have been able to access her rooms. Donna Anna would have had a waiting room with a man servant or her lady in waiting attending to her. It would have been highly unlikely that she, who had a fiancé, put herself in a position of having truly been violated. This is where Mozart is making the point of a woman having to put on social graces. Donna Anna shows her intelligence in her coming down in a fury and singing in the duet with Don Octavio how she wants revenge . (Act I) It was not a physical affront, it was an affront to her intellectual dignity that he should be able to reach her inner sanctuary. In a more symbolic interpretation, perhaps Mozart was doubting Donna Anna as a bride or maybe the opposite. Mozart liked a strong, intelligent woman who set the rules. • 13. Different Sources of Variation in Marriage and Mating... Marriage is a fundamental practice that influences village dynamics and political processes in many societies in past and present human cultures. Not only is marriage a process that supports human kinship systems, it allows for alliances and reciprocity systems between groups that create variation in human social organization (Walker et al. 2011). This paper explores the sources of variation in marriage and mating systems in two very different societies, the !Kung San and the Yanomamo, in terms of the vastly different environments each of them inhabit. Choosing an in law in !Kung San society is primarily arranged by the parents of the woman based on marital status, hunting ability, age, and willingness to accept the responsibilities of family life (Shostak 1981, p.116). The lack of violence and conflict between villages allows !Kung San parents to travel large distances to find an acceptable partner who is not of close relatedness to the girl being married (Shostak 1981, p.115). The almost universal taboo in modern day industrial societies prohibiting marriages between closely related kin is also followed in !Kung San society and the easiest way to avoid marrying your cousin is by marrying someone from a distant group (Shostak 1981, p.115; Allen et al. 2011). Close kinship systems tend to keep families close together so they can all benefit off the same resources. However, in harsh and unpredictable environments, like that faced by the !Kung, flexibility of movement created by non consanguineous unions and bilateral kinship systems is essential in creating reciprocity systems that allow access to resources that are limiting and seasonal (Allen et al. 2011). • 14. The Dynasty Of Chinese History Essay The Six Dynasty period in Chinese historiography is often classified with moments of conflict, revolt, strife, famine, disunity, and not innovation. Historians and academics categorize the period as a placeholder between the more significant Han China 206 BCE to 220 CE and the Tang dynasty 618 to 907 CE. Understandably, Han China s military, infrastructure, and civil capabilities were rivalled only by that of the Roman Empire, and even then, the Han dynasties administrative capabilities were rivalled by none. The Tang period is widely considered to be the high point of Chinese culture and civilization, where cosmopolitan China emerged with force vastly shaping China for centuries to come. The significance of the Han and Tang dynasties is not in question, it is the lack of importance that historians confer on the Six Dynasties period. Admittedly the Six Dynasty period in Chinese history can be categorized as a warring period, in which China did not develop unilaterally, but separately along fractured lines (split both north south, and east west). Much like the European medieval period, there are few accessible sources from early medieval china, and because of this, China s six dynasty period is brushed over as a period of little advancement and innovation. The Dark Ages in Europe use to receive the same scholarly interpretation as a period of stagnation. • 21. The Validity Of Aphorism There exists a common phenomenon in my high school that whenever someone forgot to bring his ruler and one of his classmates kindly lent him once, he would probably not bring his ruler ever after and kept borrowing from other classmates. This is widely accepted as and explained by the aphorism Give a man an inch and he ll take a mile , which indicates that when you are generous to someone, he will demand more. In other words, this saying points out that people are never satisfied. In fact, not only does this aphorism have implications in our daily lives, it also shed light on a broader context in social science such as unemployment insurance policy. In order to determine the validity of this aphorism in the society today, we could conduct an experiment targeting the college students who are randomly assigned into two groups, and examine how they would respond differently after they received a different endowment of money. ... • 22. Descriptive Essay On Destitute Beauty Destitute Beauty In the large city of New York, there are many beautiful people. I am not one of them. I can pass hours away sitting in a coffee shop in a tall seat next to the window, watching the beauties pass, seeing my reflection against them even more bloated and lumpy than normal. Some of them notice me. Most of them don t. It doesn t matter. Like I said, New York is a large city, I ll never see them again. And anyway, I m sure they re used to people staring. How could they not be, they draw people with their large, black rimmed eyes and lean figures and cutting jawbones like dogs to the enticing smell of meat. I am just another dog, one they will forget in moments. And when the sun sets, and the beautiful people fade away and the crowd becomes faceless and intoxicated, that s when I leave, and where I stay until the sun rises, becoming one with the pulse and throb of the mass. Promising myself that the next day, yes, the next day, I ll get a job, ignore the cold, gorgeous people, succeed even with my lumps, and papery skin, and eyes that are just a little too far apart. And the next day, with my headache, I return. Today is yesterday and the day before. The sun is especially bright now, almost passive aggressively bright, shining smugly through the haze that buries the city, bouncing into the small cafe in which I spend most of my time. It s supposed to be homey, with nearly dead plants hanging skeletal by the windows and overstuffed couches near a coffee table. I sit in the uncomfortable seat that s almost comically tall, at the only table next to a window. The barista Ellen is chatting happily with a customer, she barely notices me anymore. Which is fine by me. A woman, with long legs and hollows under her cheekbones, struts past the café, a mere foot away from me. She doesn t notice my stare. It s a funny thing. People talk all they want about feeling when people stare at them, getting goosebumps and looking around frantically for their admirer. But either it isn t true, or I m not important enough for my stare to mean anything, hold any weight. Searching through the crowd, I find parts and pieces that I want most, playing a game I often play. Her taut stomach, her long legs, her bright eyes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Americans With Disabilities Act Since it was signed into law in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been a challenge for employers to implement. This law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in both public and public businesses. There were numerous lawsuits where disabled employees have charged that employers have failed to accommodate his or her needs in the workplace. However, Supreme Court decisions interpreted the act in a way that made it difficult to prove that an impairment was a disability thereby ruling in favor of an employer. As a result, the ADAAmendments Act of 2008 (ADAA) was enacted to clarify the definition of disability (United States, Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, 2014, para. 1). Companies from every industry struggle to ensure that it meets the requirements to ensure that no disparity between individuals with a disability and those without a disability. • 26. Character Analysis Of Barttleby By Fitzgerald s Bartleby Bartleby begins from the narrators perspective. He is elderly and works on wall street. A description of the narrator allows the author to create the setting for the story without needing to introduce Bartleby in the beginning. This allows the structure to begin slowly and then speed up as it gains more focus and direction once an opinion on Bartleby is presented from the perspective of multiple characters. The narrator attempts to portray himself as humble by stating that he did not speak in vanity but instead spoke the truth when he described John Jacob Astor opinion of him. The author shows that the narrator is a calmer individual and rarely outwardly shows his displeasure with something. Being that the title of the story is Bartleby, the reader may be drawn to question why the narrator is discussed in such detail in the first few pages of the passage. Other than the narrator, there are four main characters in the story, each with a different nickname. The narrator uses Turkey, one of his clerks, to give more description about his own age that is, somewhere not far from sixty. He seems to want to separate himself from his age and this is indicated when he states that he is very sad to behold an elderly man like Turkey. This sentence makes it seem as though the two men are not the same age. Turkey is forced to tell him that they were both getting old. Nippers is much younger and the narrator does not feel as though he needs to hide this fact. This shows that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To make it easy folk music is merely, ballads and songs which are composed and conveyed vocally, without being written. • 29. Essay on The Deeper Meaning of Frost’s Tuft of Flowers The Deeper Meaning of Frost s Tuft of Flowers Robert Lee Frost published his first book of poems entitled A Boy s Will in 1913. From this collection come one of several poems that critics and anthologists alike highly regard as both lyrical and autobiographical in nature. One such critic, James L. Potter, in his book entitled [The] Robert Frost Handbook, explains [that] Frost wore a mask in public much of the time, concealing his personal problems and complexities from his reading and listening audiences (Potter 48). Through The Tuft of Flowers, a kind of lyrical soliloquy, Frost half intentionally reveals his personal views on the theme of fellowship (Potter 48). The speaker notes that the butterfly flies as far as eye could see / (but) on tremulous wing came back to me (17 18). Here, the butterfly seems to parallel the thoughts the speaker has about the field and the delight it brought both of them the day before. The reader can infer from this comparison that Frost, like the butterfly, has enjoyed great beauty, joy, and love at certain times during his life but because the grass chokes the beauty in the field, the good times are beset with feelings of loneliness and grief. The butterfly eventually turns and leads the speaker to a tall tuft of flowers beside a brook (22). The significance of the flowers and the brook can not be overlooked, because at this place in the poem the mood suddenly swings from pessimism to optimism. It seems that God was trying to send a message to Frost that the field of life can be filled with beauty and he might not always be alone in his life s work (22). This couplet of the poem is significant because it gives us a clue to how God reveals to the speaker that, although the field of life appears barren, a brook nourishes the ground to give life to the beauty he possesses. In addition, through God s infinite wisdom and mercy, Frost s loneliness and grief will someday again turn back into fellowship and joy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Rosalind Franklin Contributions You look at science (or at least talk of it) as some sort of demoralizing invention of man, something apart from real life, and which must be cautiously guarded and kept separate from everyday existence. But science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Said Rosalind Franklin, one of the greatest female scientists, in a letter to her father. Franklin is saying that science should not be interfered by human civilization, but human civilization needs and relies on science. This is significant because Franklin discovered so much for the human race through science, hence what she said, science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Though many might not recognize her name, Rosalind Franklin changed the world of biology forever. Born on July 25, 1920 in Notting Hill, London, to a family that was jewish, but she believed in no such thing. Rosalind Franklin was a very intelligent child; she excelled in school always ahed of where she was supposed to be. By the time Franklin was fifteen she already knew she wanted to be a scientist. She was taught at North London Collegiate school and went to college at Newnham Collage where she studied chemistry. Moving on, Rosalind Franklin, was best know for discovering the structure of DNA, but what most do not know she was did much more. For example, she studied coal utilization, and x ray diffraction. Sixty two percent of these people were US Citizens and some of them had only 1/16th Japanese Ancestry. One hundred and thirty thousand people were relocated to these camps without any proof of wrongdoing or just trial. Mine Okubo was one of these people and despite the inhumane conditions and unjustness of her imprisonment, she made sketches and wrote about her experience in the camps. Later she released a graphic novel titled Citizen 13660. The way that Japanese Americans Behaved and Experienced the Interment Camp programs reveals elements of their culture and community. Interestingly, the style of writing in this book is filled with some blunt comedy, along with detailed black and white sketches. The timeline of the book starts from when she was living in Europe, then migrates the USA and thereafter is inducted into the camps. The whole reason that the Internment Camps were created was because of irrational fears of the US public and government towards Japanese people.
