2. What is Universal Design?
S A process that can be used
by all people, even those
with disabilities and differing
characteristics, to apply
towards a specific goal.
3. Process of Universal Design
S Identify the environment that you want to apply the internal
design to.
S Figure out the overall population that will be in the
environment. (age, gender, size, race, abilities/disabilities)
S Involve the population that will be using the environment
S Apply the guidelines/standards
S Plan for the process that will be used to address the
accommodations.
S Train those who will be the ones that provide the help
S Evaluate the success/failure of the universal design
process.
S Adopt the guidelines/standards
4. Principles of Universal Design
S Equitable Use- the universal design is
useful to those with the different abilities
S Flexibility in Use- the universal design
accommodates a range of
abilities/disabilities
S Simple and Intuitive- Universal design is
easy to use/understand, not matter what
disability the user has.
S Perceptible Information- The design is able
to communicate the information effectively,
regardless of their disabilities/abilities
5. Principles of Universal Design
S Tolerance for error- even if an
accident occurs, the design has
what it takes to minimize hazards
and chaos.
S Low Physical Effort- design
encompasses effective set up and
organization
S Size and space for approach and
use- the size where the design is
located is appropriate and will be
comfortable for those of all
different shapes/sizes.
