2. What is the Zika Virus?
● Zika Virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that was first identified in Uganda in
1947 in monkeys through a center that monitored yellow fever.
● It was first found in humans in 1952 in Uganda and Tanzania.
● Zika disease is spread by mosquitoes. For most people it is a very mild
infection but it is very serious for pregnant women.
4. Was there any recent outbreaks?
● Zika virus was responsible for the 2015-16 Virus epidemic across the Americas.
● Brazil was the first to experience Zika fever a symptom caused by the Zika
Virus.
● It then spread to the Americas where it caused neurological defects to babies.
● It causes babies to be born with the rare Guillain-Barre syndrome and
Microcephaly.
5. What was the reason for the outbreak?
● It was spread by Aedes Mosquitoes. They are the same insects that spread the
dengue virus.
● They are found throughout the Americas except for Canada and Chile where it
is too cold for them to survive.
● It was then transmitted to humans were it caused symptoms.
6. Advice
● After the incident, Brazil’s Health Minister has said a new testing kit is being
developed to identify infections quickly.
● He also said more money was being put into the development of a vaccine.
● Some scientists are also using genetically modified sterile mosquitoes that
appear to reduce mosquito populations by 90%.
