Health Behavior Analysis
Health behaviors, defined by the course book as, "behaviors undertaken... to enhance or maintain ...
health," is an important aspect of healthy living (pg 39). As a Public Health Policy undergraduate
student at the University of California, Irvine, the rigorous education I receive often results in high
stress. In previous years to counteract the copious amounts of stress, I would engage in regular
relaxation such as unwinding for a few hours at the beach. Now in the third year of my education,
beginning upper division courses required for my major, I found it increasingly difficult to manage
the balance between my workload and the amount of time personally needed to relax. I
acknowledged I could no longer spend hours of my week at the beach when ... Show more content

I reduced my time back to 10 minutes.
Day six, January 23 I was able to fall into the meditative state meditating for 15 minutes easily.
Sunday, January 24, the seventh and final day of the assignment I increased intervals for the last
time to 20 minutes. Although lasting the full 20 minutes feeling drowsy afterwards, I fell into sleep
immediately after meditation. Feeling rejuvenated upon awakening from my slumber this is when I
made the conscious decision to implement deep breathing meditation into my daily routine.
Over the course of this assignment, I began to greatly enjoy deep breathing meditation. Continuing
my regime of deep breathing meditation, I regularly practice this style of meditation. Initially
choosing this modification for my body, it had positive effects on both body and mind. Centering
concentration on my body, quieted my thoughts allocating my mind time to rest for a period during
the day. Pausing my mind to focus on breathing made me mindful to my breath aiding my body
when I became breathless, in need of a deep breath while navigating

Examples Of Meditation, Prayer And Contemplation
In this section, a detailed analysis and discussion of the findings of my sources will be used as
evidence in order to strengthen the argument of the research hypothesis, which is to what extent
does meditation, prayer and contemplation contribute to an individual's physical and psychological
well–being. It would be far better if one's self could achieve holistic well–being, improved peace of
mind and relaxation as well as better thought processing without the need for any form of medical
intervention. The scientific evidence of the many sources supports the notion that meditation, prayer
and contemplation improves an individual's mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well–being.
The first source to support the research hypothesis is a scientific journal titled: Meditation for

Byrd's study and test results clearly showed favor for the prayer group. The results and scores
collected and analyzed clearly showed that the prayer group had an overall better outcome. The
prayer group needed lesser amounts of ventilation, antibiotics, and diuretics. Based on Byrd's study
and the data collected, there seemed to be a positive and beneficial effect on the group of patients
that received intercessory prayer (1988:4). According to the results of Byrd's study, prayer has been
shown to promote healing and holistic well–being in others, and so it can be reasoned that prayer
has great potential to affect the physical and psychological well–being of the prayer–beneficiary, as
well as for the prayer–giver him/herself.
The third source relates to contemplation and the potential contribution it could make to law
students, lawyers, and their clients. The source is a Harvard Negotiation Law Review. It is a

Meditation: Benefits Of Stillness
Chapter 9 Meditation: Benefits of Stillness
Being in Stillness
In many ways, healing work is a meditative process. The ability to do energy healing or heal oneself
is greatly improved with the addition of a regular meditation practice that clears the mind and allows
the energy to flow. A simple definition of meditation is to quiet the mind. Meditation begins with
relaxation, good posture and concentration on the present moment, noticing each breath. Even this
simple practice, if done regularly, can change brainwaves, create more coherence between brain and
heart and mind and body. Meditation decreases stress by promoting the relaxation response:
lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate, and decreasing metabolic rate. The organs can ...

For some, the process of meditation allows the expansion of consciousness until it merges with the
infinite. Deep in the subconscious rests all experiences one has had. Meditation can help one get in
touch with the fears and expectations of the ego, as well as strengths. Meditation is a means of
sorting out superficial experience from deeper truth. It can be a path to the important words of
advice from Socrates: Know thyself. Using meditation to gain clarity about one's motivations and
agendas will help the healer avoid projecting personal issues onto a client and will also prevent
getting tangled up in the client's issues. Listening to inner wisdom, helps one make better decisions
or have a better understanding of experiences.
Through meditation a willing mind may be able to access spiritual helpers and guides. These
experiences may be a function of the wise mind, personal projections, or beings of a higher
vibration. They may appear as angels, saints, beings of light, or the aspects of the divine. These
helpers may provide guidance or actual assistance in healing if requested to do so. On her audiotape
"The Power of Prayer," Joan Borysenko tells a story about a collective of souls who are stuck in a
room because they did not know they could ask for

Descartes Third Meditation On The Existence Of God
In this essay I will talk about Descartes meditation three in that god exits and that god is not
deceiving us.
Descartes at a point doubted everything, and he believed that everything he saw, everything he
believed was real was false and that nothing existed as well as himself. He doubted everything that
could be doubted and threw anything that might be wrong. He believed that we are probably
dreaming and everything around us was false and that what we believe we are seeing or hearing was
being controlled by someone or something else, that maybe we are not who we think we are.
Therefore Descartes eliminated everything, but got to a point that he knew that he is a thinking thing
and therefore he got to exist. Descartes knew that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is God controlling our mind and doing what he pleases? Descartes does not think so. Dreaming or
not we have control of doing anything we want to do, and in Descartes third meditation we don't
know if the body that we think belong to us is real, we can still do what we want to do with it even if
this body is just on our imagination. When I decide to lift my right hand in any random occasion, I
decided to do it not God. When I decide to go to the tattoo shop and place a tattoo to my imaginary
body, I walked into my car and drove to the tattoo shop and got the tattoo that I wanted. So how can
god be deceptive or controlling what we do if I decided to do what I did. People could argue that the
life we live in is a false dream, Descartes would say that we are not dreaming because in dreams
things don't connect together and when we are awake things do. People die eventually but until that
day comes people are living the same life and not waking up to another one every day. When I go to
sleep my dreams seem so real although some things done connect together, but I always wake up in
the same bed, in the same room, in the same house that I felt asleep in, so how is god being
deceptive since he has giving us the control of our own lives and control of what we want to think or

Yog Becoming More Than A Popular Exercise
When most Americans picture yoga, they think of an old indian man sitting in a long robbed dress
with his legs crossed in a posture that seems very uncomfortable, except peaceful for the majority of
yoga professionals who are in healthy physical shape. Yoga is a system of exercises for attaining
bodily or mental control and well–being. This may include the control of breathing, simple
meditation, specific body movements and widely practice for relaxation and health. Yoga is
becoming more of a popular exercise because it not only helps lose weight, but also helps gain
flexibility and strength. Once yoga is practiced for a while, it not only proves that it is great for the
body, it also proves how great it is for the mind. Many Americans are getting more involved with
yoga because it is easy to do and the benefits are amazing. Yoga can be done anywhere, in the
privacy of your own home where you follow it through videos on the television, or in a classroom
with a certified instructor who teaches you the poses and the breathing techniques. The Columbia
Journalism "Everybody loves yoga; sixteen and a half million Americans practice it regularly, and
twenty–five million more say they will try it this year. If you've been awake and breathing air in the

Descartes Third Meditation Analysis
Within Descartes' Third Meditation, Descartes makes a circular argument on the Rule of Truth.
Descartes's argument for the Rule of Truth is that he accepts them due to the fact that he has clear
and distinct perceptions. If this is the case, Descartes' argument for the Rule of Truth seems to
assume that distinct and clear perceptions set out to be true. Take for example: 1. Ogus says he
always tells the truth. 2. If Ogus said he likes ice cream, then Ogus liking ice cream is true. 3.
Therefore, Ogus always tells the truth. Although this is not the best example, this argument assumes
what it sets out to prove. The second premise summarizes in a slightly different way, what the
conclusion already states. This is a major flaw because the main

Rene Descartes And The Third Meditation Of Discourse On...
In the Third Meditation of Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene
Descartes, Descartes gives a proof for the existence of God. Descartes starts out by stating his
general rule that everything he can clearly and distinctly perceives must be true. However, Descartes
stated in the First Meditation that he can doubt things that are clear and distinct to him on the basis
that he is being deceived by God. In order to prove his rule to be true, he needs to prove the
existence of God and that he is not a deceiver (Descartes 70–71). Descartes first establishes that
everything that exists, and has reality, has a cause. Everything is put into existence by something
else. Ideas have objective reality which is what an idea is an idea about and all ideas differ in their
objective reality. For example, the idea of a supreme deity has more objective reality than something
that is finite. This is because something that is infinite is more real than something that is finite.
Because ideas have objective reality, that means that they must have a cause (Descartes 72–73).
Next, Descartes says, "it is evident by the light of nature that there must be at least as much [reality]
in the efficient and total cause as there is in the effect of that same cause." (Descartes 73). Here
Descartes is basically saying that it is evident that there must be as much reality in the cause of
something as there is in the effect. For instance, there must be as much cause in a child as there is in
the parents. Descartes now establishes that premise for ideas. He says that there must be at least as
much formal reality in the cause of the idea as the idea has objective reality, and he clearly has an
idea of God. Therefore, the cause of the idea of God must have at least as much formal reality as the
idea has objective reality (Descartes 74–75). Descartes now establishes that the objective reality of
the idea of God is infinite. This is because God is an infinite being. Because the cause of the idea of
God must have at least as much formal reality as the idea has objective reality, the cause must have
infinite formal reality. Next Descartes says, "I am a substance, that fact is not sufficient to explain
my having an idea of

Counter Argument On Meditation
Counter Argument
Although admired by many very few of us truthfully know what meditation is. It is more or less
mental activity aiming at shifting human concentration to something else; others consider that
humans meditate when they visualize something that gives them peacetime or satisfaction. No
matter what the scientific definition is, the goal is to slow down and, eventually, completely break
the continuous activity of the human mind. Mariam Emara is supporting meditation powerfully as
she is an Arhati Yogi, pranic healer and meditation instructor she is trying to transfer her knowledge
to others and to inspire people to start practicing meditation. Although the writer of the article tried
to promote the idea and practice of meditation, she relied more on her personal experience instead of
scientific facts. She resorted to false assumption, logical fallacies and weak evidence from different
cultures without explaining any of them.
The reader would with the author's ideas because at the beginning she mentioned that meditation, ...

The first logical fallacy is slippery Slope – meditation can help, because it is the brain that
ultimately controls the body. Meditation is a mental and spiritual activity, while the brain in the
article context is a human organ that produces chemicals, renews cells and controls the physiological
aspects of the human body. I.e. meditation as a spiritual practice does not necessarily lead to
physiological enhancement. Another slippery slope is: "by using techniques of positive affirmation,
it can help in weight loss." Weight loss is more problematic than this. The third logical fallacies false
analogy – "Egypt has not always been fertile ground for a meditation culture...many people do not
believe in meditation. "The fourth logical fallacy generalization – American or Chinese counterparts

Five Points Of Yog Yoga Essay

Five Points of Yoga For this assignment, I thought I would be helpful for me to know about five
points of yoga. Swami Vishnudevananda who was born in South India came up with five essential
principles of doing yoga. The five points of yoga focused on mental, spiritual, and physical health:
proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking and
meditation. I think it is important to remind myself about these five points of yoga when starting a
new day. The proper exercise is simply moving our body. If we do not provide natural movement to
our body then a great discomfort will ensue in a mean time. Proper exercise should not make
practitioner unpleased, but it has to make practitioner pleasant and it has to be beneficial to one's
body. Yoga exercises are not only for the body, but also a gateway to widen mental and spiritual
condition. Asanas is a yogic physical exercise, which means stable pose. It focuses on the flexibility
of the body and the health of the spine. The exercise also affects organs, glands and hormones. Most
often times, sun salutation is practice before the Asanas. Proper breathing and controlling breathing
take important roles in yoga. In yoga, we use the maximum capacity of the lung when we breathe.
We inhale deep slowly and exhale slowly longer and longer than inhale. This process increases
energy and clears minds. There are three types

The Effects Of Meditation And Yoga
The whole concept might sound like the perfect idea for a science fiction film.
Even better, the gimmick in the last scene from an infomercial.
Meditation and yoga have been long praised for their never–ending mental and physical benefits:
they decrease stress, enhance your focus and attention and allow you to become more aware with
your inner dialogue, helping you challenge long–standing traumas and misconceptions that might be
doing more bad than good.
Meditation and yoga have a truly transformative effect on your perception of the world and the way
you react to it.
But according to recent studies, meditation and yoga might also have never before seen effects, in
much deeper ways.
But, can meditation really change your DNA? Can it physically transform your genes?

In 2008, a study found that comprehensive life changes like a better diet, physical exercise and

prostate cancer.

But the findings didn't end there. One thing is to stop telomeres from shortening. Another is to
actually lengthen them.
A study from Harvard University analyzed blood samples from both meditators and non–meditators

what he has discovered to date and how he is still very uncertain of the existence of physical things,
but that he is confident that he exists and that he is an intelligent entity that has uncertainties,
understandings, motivations, visualizations, and senses, among many other things. He is confident
that he is a thoughtful thing and he evidently and distinctly notices this fact. He might not be
confident without all pure and diverse observations can be certain. Consequently, he concludes,
whatever he observes clearly and distinctly must be true. At one point, he believed he was sure of all
kinds of things that he is now uncertain. These things

Similarities And Differences Between Ballet And Yoga
According to Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies, 8 million people, who are in United States
of America, take a ballet class one time at the minimum past a year in 2002. In addition, the average
number of frequency of ballet is 1.7 times in a year (Center for Arts, 1). On the other hand,
according to CISION of January 13, 2016, over 3.6 million people attend a yoga class in 2016. The
amounts of student, who want to learn yoga, are getting growing 20.4 million from 2012 (Yoga, 1).
Therefore, there are similar and dissimilar points between ballet and yoga. Ballet and yoga are
categorized by cardiorespiratory exercise. What is cardiorespiratory exercise? Cardiorespiratory
exercise is that people, who do cardiorespiratory exercise, need to take oxygen when their body
generates energy and burn their fat or carbohydrate. Additionally, exercise level is from beginning to
intermediate so they can keep exercise for long time per one time such as, swimming, ballet, and
yoga. University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) has dance performance major and students can take
ballet class three times a week. The class starts from nine o'clock to ten twenty–five in the morning.
Even if people are not dance performance major, they can take the class.
Moreover, UCO students can take yoga class at wellness center at UCO. There are two classes a day
from Mondays to Thursdays during semester and the classes are about fifty minutes per a class.

The Experiential Exercises During The Classroom Essay
The experiential exercises conducted in the classroom all encompassed a social element of
communication, a collaborative approach, and a process of maintaining an internal monologue, a
sense of self–expression, self–realization, and self–reflection. These unique exercises, albeit, very
different from one another, all effectively gave the participant an experience that stimulated thought,
challenged the persons comfort zones and familiarity, as well as forced each individual to deeply
compare the exercise processes and outcomes to their own common occurrences in their personal
lives. Furthermore, the exercise outcomes often stimulated ideas and possibilities for personal
development and growth, enhancing one's character and personality traits, and encouraged changes
to their own abilities, habits, and behavioral patterns. Although I preferred some exercises over
others, I found that I was stimulated differently during and after each exercise, and often found the
exercise outcomes resonating for the rest of the evening, and often stimulating thought and
discussion with others throughout the next day. Each exercise effectively allowed a participant the
ability to consider, evaluate, and challenge their personal character, actions, and motives. The first
experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and will be examining, is the insightful discussion and
mindfulness meditative exercise conducted by the guest speaker, Bob McClure. Bob's perceptive

The Benefits Of Meditation
The sad truth is that while most of us are aware of the benefits of meditation, very few of us actually
have a regular meditation practice. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to incorporate
meditation into our daily lives. I overcame those obstacles and have been meditating daily for two
years as well as meditating periodically throughout the day! Through meditation I have experienced
more peace and joy in my life, I've become less reactive and less stressed and I have more energy
and creativity! And I know you can experience these benefits as well!
But first, I think it's important to define what meditation is? Many of us have misconceptions about
meditation. The most common misconception is that meditation is about getting rid of thought! That

him to become a distraction, he became my meditation!
If you are meditating and a distraction happens. Just notice it. Allow it to be. If it's something that
needs your attention, tend to whatever needs to be done, while still observing your breath!
Obstacle #6: Not knowing how to meditate
So many people feel that they don't know how to meditate. We make meditation more complicated
than it really is! Again, meditation is about being present in the moment. It's really about finding
what works for you!

Essay on Altered States of Consciousness
Altered States of Consciousness
Consciousness is a state of awareness. This includes a person's feelings, sensations, ideas, and
perceptions. There are many different states of consciousness.
Sleep is a state of altered consciousness, characterized by certain patterns of the brains activity and
inactivity. An altered state of consciousness is when a person is not completely aware of their
surroundings. Some researchers believe that we sleep to clear our minds of useless information.
Other people believe that it is a type of primitive hibernation: we sleep to conserve energy.

muscles begin to relax. Your breathing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hypnotist induces a trance by slowly persuading the participant to relax and lose all interest in
external distractions. The participant is not under the hypnotists control but can be convinced to do
things that he or she would not normally do. However, anyone can resist hypnosis by refusing to
open his or her mind to the hypnotist.
Another state of consciousness is meditation. Meditation is the focusing of ones attention to clear
the mind and produce relaxation. There are three major approaches to meditation. The first approach
is Transcendental meditation. Transcendental meditation involves the repetition of a mantra, usually
a Sanskrit phrase. The participant sits with his or her eyes closed and meditate for 15 to 20 minutes
twice a day. The second approach, mindfulness meditation, was developed from a Buddhist
tradition. Mindfulness meditation focuses on the present moment. For example, the participant
might move his or her focus throughout the body, from the tip of their toes to the top of their head,
and paying very close attention to areas that cause pain. The third approach is breath meditation.
Breath meditation is when a participant focuses his or her respiration–the process of inhaling and
exhaling in a rhythmic pattern. Most people believe that proper breathing can help one self to be
stress free. Researchers agree that most people can benefit from some sort of systematic relaxation

Mindful Yoga Essay
MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is a practice that has roots in spiritual Buddhist traditions where it signifies "the
cultivation of conscious awareness in the present moment in an open and non–judgmental manner".
Mindfulness–based interventions target psychosocial processes resulting in improved
symptomatology (Carlson et al., 2003 in Campbell, Labelle, Bacon, Faris, and Carlson, 2011).
There are many different mindfulness–based approaches applied for treatment of psychological and
physical issues from Buddhist meditations including Zen meditations and Vipassana to modernly
adjusted approaches like mindfulness–based stress reduction, mindfulness based cognitive therapy,
dialectical behavioral therapy and acceptance commitment therapy (Chiesa and Malinowski, ...

intervention showed the significant growth in mindfulness, especially in the areas of observing and
non–reacting. It also demonstrated sleep enhancement and pain reduction in women who started

proved to have more benefits including stabilizing the cortisol (therefore stress), which rises during
the pregnancy resulting in daily stability and stronger circadian rhythmicity. (Beddoe, Yang,
Kennedy, Weiss and Lee, 2009).
Another study showed an efficiency of mindfulness based stress reduction on lowering blood
pressure in pregnant women (Poursharifi, Ghahri and Sahhaf 2015).
An 8–week mindfulness–based cognitive therapy (MBCT) showed to have an influence on pregnant
women in terms of lowering measures of depression, stress and anxiety, which continued being

Descartes Third Meditation: Proof of Gods Existence Essay
Descartes' Third Meditation: Proof of God's Existence
In Rene Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes is seeking to find a system of stable,
lasting and certain knowledge, which he can ultimately regard as the Truth. In his methodical quest
to carry out his task, Descartes eventually arrives at the proverbial fork in the road: how to bridge
the knowledge of self with that of the rest of the world. Descartes’ answer to this is to prove the
existence of God. The purpose of this essay will be to state and explain Descartes' Third Meditation:
Proof of God's Existence by identifying relevant concepts and terminology and their relationship to
each other and examining each premise as well as the conclusion of the proof and finally ... Show

The highest degree of reality involves the infinite. The infinite represents substances that are
unbounded and possess no conceivable or tangible limits in any of their aspects or qualities. The
only example of this for Descartes would be an entity of omnipotence, who would be all knowing,
all powerful, and that of which no greater can be conceived, in other words God.
The next concept that must be explained is in fact the very first premise for Descartes' Third
Meditation Proof for the Existence of God, that of the Causal Adequacy Principle. Descartes reasons
that "as the idea contains one particular subjective reality rather than another, it must get this
reality from a cause having at least as much formal reality as the idea has subjective reality" (p
58). In this, Descartes attempts to tie together the concepts on kinds of reality and degrees of reality.
Returning to the example using the ceiling, Descartes would argue that the thing causing or bringing
into existence the idea of the ceiling (a mind dependent entity) could only be another finite
substance (i.e. the actual ceiling) or an infinite substance (i.e. God), either of which would be of
formal (mind independent) reality. In saying this I eliminate the notion that the idea of the ceiling
could be sustained by the holes and markings (accidents and modifications) because according to
Descartes they are of a lower degree of reality,

fact that meditation influences the parts of your brain that direct mental conditions, for example,
mood swing, tension, stress, gloominess, pressure, and so forth.
Meditation will help you in building up your Profession, by making educated, business and

In Descartes Third Meditation he finds proof of Gods existence. The Third Meditation isn't about
God, but is mainly about us because God is innate in us. Descartes argument that God exists clearly
states that since I have the idea of God already innate in my mind, he must be an infinite substance
with objective reality. An idea with Objective reality must be produced by something with the exact
same idea with formal reality. Therefore, the idea of God is an infinite formal reality, and since
humans are only said to be a finite substance (mind/matter), there's no way the idea of an infinite

Mindfulness meditation is meditation lets feelings, thoughts, and sensations exists without
judgement. It is meditation that does not focus on a single word, or mantra, one's breathing, or any
one single thing (Tarrasch 2015). It is freedom to exist in the present place in time. Mindfulness

Buddhism Vs Christianity Meditation Essay
Meditation is defined as continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation. With this in mind
how does meditation become categorized under a school of thought? Meditation is different for
every person; however there are ideas that stem from certain places. Two of the largest types of
meditation are Buddhist meditation and Christian meditation. These large religions have ways in
which they suggest to their members to meditate. With Christianity and Buddhism stemming from
different parts of the world, would there origins be the main reason for their differences? Perhaps
their teaching would have to do with the way that they teach their members to practice? Whatever
the case, their methods have been routed in history and have been ... Show more content on

He traveled to learn deep meditation and yogic practices. Then after years of trying different
methods, while sitting under a Budhi tree, he found pure Enlightenment while meditating. From this
point on he would teach to anyone who would follow him. In his eyes all were equal, anyone, man
or woman from any class. He also created an order of monks that would help him teach his message
to the masses. Those who follow the school of Buddhism understand it as a philosophy, moral code,
and/or religion. The main goal is to define the type of suffering that a human has and provide a
remedy for it. The teachings are centered around non–violence and compassion. The teachings tie in
with meditation being the most important way to achieve spiritual insight. Buddhist meditation is
very different from all other forms preached by other religions. To understand their meditation one
must first learn about the Esoteric Buddhist beliefs and teachings. Esoteric Buddhism is a large sect
that is also known as Shingon, which translates to true word, and Mikkyo Buddism. Esoteric
Buddhism rose to popularity during the Tang dynasty. This rise was due to the rich liturgy that an
esoteric buddhist had to study. It became popular amongst the intellectual who wanted to learn more
about the teachings. Esoteric Buddhist also are required to meditate in order to advance in their

Rene Descartes Third Meditation Summary
In Rene Descartes' Third Meditation, his purpose is to prove whether God exists, and if so then
whether or not God is a deceiver. This mediation allows us to be sure that when we perceive things
there is no way that they could be wrong. Descartes believed that God created our mind and situated
us in this world, with this being said, God should have given you a mind that reaches true
conclusions about the world on each and every occasion. Your mind isn't incapable of making
mistakes or being wrong. Basically, Descartes is trying to prove that God wouldn't have given you a
mind that would leave you to false beliefs about the world for the simple fact that that would make
God a deceiver. Therefore, Descartes thinks that God created us with minds that have the capacity to
attain true beliefs about the world. "We are neither infallible nor hopelessly trapped by falsehood.
Rather, we are somewhere in between: We can reach true beliefs if we are careful about how we use
the minds that God bestowed upon us." He shows that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By Descartes' thought, if you carefully inspect the beliefs to make sure that they are clear and
distinct, then we could be absolutely certain that the beliefs are correct. Descartes uses the concept
of "clear and distinct ideas" to prove a few different arguments. A clear and distinct idea is an idea
that you have in your conscious mind of something that feels so completely true and utterly real that
you can't possibly doubt it. The idea of God, somewhat who is perfect, was clear and distinct to
Descartes, but just because he believes this is true does not necessarily mean it is true. Because of
this, he goes about trying to show that the presence of clear and distinct ideas in our conscious mind
proves that God does exist. Clear and distinct ideas are undoubtly very important for Descartes, they
allow him to define what it is makes something

Should We Meditate?
How then should we meditate? What are the stages or elements in meditation? First, we must
carefully read the particular Scripture passage and think over its real and original meaning.
Secondly, we must heartily turn it into a prayer for mercy and grace that its teaching may become
part of our lives. Thirdly, we must desire sincerely to transfuse it into a resolution for our lives to
reproduce or appropriate it. Fourthly, we must wholeheartedly surrender to, and trust in, God for
power to practise it henceforth and constantly throughout the day. This means that we will be
thinking over the Word read, its meaning, its application, its message, and then talking to God about
it, in confession of past failures, in prayer for future blessing, in ... Show more content on

The first thing to be concerned about was not, how much I might serve the Lord, how I might
glorify the Lord; but how I might get my soul into a happy state, and how my inner man might be

I might seek to relieve the distressed, I might in other ways seek to behave myself as it becomes a

Descartes Third Meditation Summary
Descartes used the flow of his meditations to his advantage. The third meditation is derived from the
first and second meditation. It does so by agreeing with what Descartes has proven to himself thus
far in the meditation as a whole. Mediation three could be considered a posteriori argument because
he uses the first two meditations as an empirically observable fact and then draws inferences based
on them to come to his conclusion. It provides a more significant and tangible argument by having
the other meditations co–occur. Without Descartes first known truth of the ability to doubt
established in mediation one, the argument of God's existence through an infinite being thought in a
finites mind would never have been eventually made. Putting the truths being established to prove

that it may be possible that our mind actually is an infinite being and we are not aware, or that our
mind alone created the idea of an infinite being. From there on, he counter argues the possible
argument against his proof, by saying that that would be veering too far away from his evidence and
idea pertaining to God. Descartes also goes into depth on what this evidence can mean. It leads him

Cataphatic Vs Apatic Meditation Essay
Mediation is a mental exercise used to reach a heightened level of spiritual and mental awareness
thru repeating one's mantra and breath. Although the practice sounds simple in itself and doesn't
sound like there would be much room for an expansion and growth as a practice. It has still
managed to grow into an umbrella term with a rich history and a verity of different meditation that
people practice some even date back before the Buddhist monks in early 2500 B.C. People have
been practicing meditation for years from the Catholic monasteries, to the Desert Father, and
throughout Asia and the Buddhist. However the branches of meditation that I will be capitalizing on
is found mainly in the Christian traditions of meditation and prayer which can be categorized as two
major classifications called Apophatic and Kataphatic (also known as Cataphatic) meditation. These
two branches of meditation are the broadest and can be seen as the two most basic form of
meditation, and with a proper understanding of them you can learn to navigate this broad practice of
meditation and find a form that best fits you.
The most commonly used forms of meditation across the board and for me the easiest one to do is

Examples Of Third Meditation By Rene Descartes
Descartes' Special Causal Principle
In his Meditations, Rene Descartes attempts to uncover certain truths about existence. In his Third
Meditation, he establishes his "special causal principle" (SCP). Descartes uses this principle to
explore the origin of ideas, and to prove the existence of God. I agree that there is much logic to be
found in the SCP, but I disagree with Descartes method of proving God's existence, and in this essay
I will explain why. I will begin by explaining the SCP, and will then demonstrate how Descartes
applies this principle to prove that God exists. I will then present my critique of the SCP, and expose
the flaws in both of Descartes proofs with regards to the principle. A conclusion will then ... Show

Newton's laws of motion dictate that an object remains inert unless it is acted upon by some force. It
follows that the effect of that force cannot be greater than the force itself. For example, a boy scout
cannot derive more heat from a campfire than the actual temperature of the fire itself. As far as
physical objects go, Descartes is making a completely logical argument.
At this point, we must remember that Descartes' is still dealing with the metaphysical. He has yet to
prove that anything in the physical world exists. Descartes avoids this trap by formulating that the
SCP not only applies to physical objects, but also to ideas. By applying the SCP to his ideas (which
exist metaphysically), Descartes is providing himself with his sole criteria to judge between true
existence and existence that is merely perceived. In order to show that ideas are subject to the SCP,
Descartes points out a difference between formal and objective reality. Objective reality is the reality
presented in a picture or idea, whereas formal reality exists in the object of the picture or the idea.
Objective reality is reflectional whereas formal reality is actual. There cannot be more objective
reality than actual reality, otherwise the surplus reality must derive from nothing, which is
impossible. Once this is established, Descartes furthers his premise though the extension of the

Descartes' answer to this is to prove the
existence of God. The purpose of this essay will be to state and explain Descartes' Third Meditation:
Proof of God's Existence by identifying relevant concepts and terminology and their relationship to
each other and examining each premise as well as the conclusion of the proof and finally ... Show

These characteristics cannot exists by themselves and are thus subject to the existence of things in
the next highest degree of reality, that of substances. Substances are finite objects or ideas with
conceivable limits. In the previous example, the ceiling itself is the substance with the holes and
markings (of a lower degree of reality) being dependent upon it for their continued existence. The
highest degree of reality involves the infinite. The infinite represents substances that are unbounded
and possess no conceivable or tangible limits in any of their aspects or qualities. The only example
of this for Descartes would be an entity of omnipotence, who would be all knowing, all powerful,
and that of which no greater can be conceived, in other words God.
The next concept that must be explained is in fact the very first premise for Descartes' Third
Meditation Proof for the Existence of God, that of the Causal Adequacy Principle. Descartes reasons
that "as the idea contains one particular subjective reality rather than another, it must get this reality
from a cause having at least as much formal reality as the idea has subjective reality" (p 58). In this,
Descartes attempts to tie together the concepts on kinds of reality and degrees of reality. Returning
to the example using the ceiling, Descartes would argue that the thing causing or bringing into
existence the idea of the ceiling (a mind

Rene Descartes Third Meditation: Final Analysis
After proving that God exists in the Third Meditation, Rene Descartes has now come to the problem
that if God exists, then why did he create imperfect beings such as ourselves, humans? Rene
Descartes believes this is the case because the infinite, will outweigh the finite. In this essay I will
explain Rene Descartes response to this problem of imperfect beings and how he got to this
conclusion. I will additionally show how his response is connected to earlier Meditations and finally
I will analyze how Descartes tries to support his claim, while also providing my personal objection
towards Descartes response. How does Descartes reach his conclusion that the infinite will outweigh
the finite? According to Descartes God exists nonetheless why ... Show more content on

This quote from the first meditation with conjunction with the previous one in the previous
paragraph shows a connection between earlier meditations and how there is still some uncertainty in
Descartes claim. It is questioning God's very existence and Descartes finds himself having to
reiterate that God does exist in the fourth meditation with thoughts like these. " God is immense,
incomprehensible, and infinite..."(Descartes 547), " It occurs to me that whenever we ask whether
the works of God are perfect, we should keep in view not simply someone creature in isolation from
the rest, but the universe as a whole"(Descartes 547). Through these quotes from Descartes;
Descartes is trying to prove that God is not just like the rest of us but something far out of reach
something that compare to the universe. Through examples like these and reiteration Descartes
attempts to solve the circling back to previous meditations. Descartes is trying to solve these
problems of him circling back to previous meditations by relying heavily on God and in a way
through his pursuit of finding a way to fully most problems he brings up the fact that the infinite will

Mindfulness meditation is meditation lets feelings, thoughts, and sensations exists without
judgement. It is meditation that does not focus on a single word, or mantra, one's breathing, or any
one single thing (Tarrasch 2015). It is freedom to exist in the present place in time. Mindfulness
meditation is important to study because it may have many positive effects in everyday life. These
effects can go beyond just stress relief or a general clamming experience. "Indeed, perhaps the most
significant outcome of mindfulness meditation is the capacity to adopt an ''observing self''" (Tarrasch

Mindfulness Meditation On False Memory
The second stated "long–term meditators would show superior performance to short–term
meditators". And the third stated "concentrative meditators would be more subject to expectancy
effects...mindfulness meditators would show superior performance relative to concentrative
meditators when the stimulus was unexpected" (Valentine & Sweet, 1999, p. 63). Using the Wilkins'
Counting Test (a measure of sustained focused attention) the control group was placed in a
classroom to perform the test while the meditation groups were tested post meditation sessions in a
separate room. The test was comprised of a series of tones which each group was asked to count (the
meditation groups were told there would be three rather than two sets). The results confirmed the
three hypotheses, overall concurring the use of meditation leads to improved concentration with
little difference between concentrative and mindfulness meditation (Valentine & Sweets, 1999).
Through the importance of meditation, holding strong positive results with attention, the working
memory, and concentration there was one more study brought up explaining the effects of
mindfulness meditation on false–memory susceptibility. Wilson, Mickes, Stolarz–Fantino, Evrard &
Fantino (2014) conducted three experiments on the effect of mindfulness meditation on false–
memory susceptibility predicting that "participants in the mindfulness condition would be especially
likely to form false memories" (Wilson et al., 2014, p. 1567). The first

The Meaning of Silence and Meditation
Christian spiritual writings are texts that help us connect to our spirituality and they also hold
various themes or messages. Some recurring themes that have been uncovered from a number of
texts are; meditation, silence, connecting to God and spirituality. Two themes that are fundamental
are silence and meditation. In meditation we find silence difficult but this is a factor that we need to
work on because it is very important. A hypothesis has been created that will assist in critiquing and
evaluating four Spiritual Writings in their attempt to finding the mystery of God. Contemporary
Christian spirituality writings suggest that deep meditation and silence are fundamental to us in
order to search for the mystery of God. The next four paragraphs will talk about for authors and the
articles they have created. These articles will be evaluated on their attempt to explain that silence
and meditation, help us search for the mystery of God. The four authors that will be critiqued are
Laurence Freeman, Cynthia Bourgeaults, John Main and Richard Rohr.
The first resource was created by Laurence Freeman. He has created 2 articles that talk about the
Silence of the Soul and The First Sight: The Experience of Faith. In both of his texts Laurence
Freeman writes about how silence is fundamental to finding God and that meditation is how we can
connect with God. He believes that many people are afraid of silence, which restricts their
connection with God. Laurence Freeman is a Catholic

Generally, it has been found by researchers that mediators have decreased sympathetic nervous
system activity and increased parasympathetic activity (Cahn & Polich, 2006; Harrison, Manocha,

mechanisms, and increased parasympathetic activity implies relaxation and rest mechanisms. One
study had mixed results about the effects of mindfulness meditation and the nervous system, because
they found increase in both cardiac parasympathetic and sympathetic activity with their participants
who went through a Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction Program (Ditto, Eclache, & Goldman,

also used a within study design in which novel reading and mindfulness training was randomly
sequenced. Therefore, the lack of effect found in the study may have been affect by individual
differences and a comparison with an improperly matched group of control participants. One study
looked at cardiovascular changes from practicing mindfulness meditation, with health participants

Third Meditation, by Rene Descartes
In the Third Meditation, Descartes forms a proof for the existence of God. He begins by laying
down a foundation for what he claims to know and then offers an explanation for why he previously
accepted various ideas but is no longer certain of them. Before he arrives at the concept of God,
Descartes categorizes ideas and the possible sources that they originate from. He then distinguishes
between the varying degrees of reality that an idea can possess, as well as the cause of an idea.
Descartes proceeds to investigate the idea of an infinite being, or God, and how he came to acquire
such an idea with more objective reality than he himself has. By ruling out the possibility of this
idea being invented or adventitious, Descartes concludes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Descartes explains that the "ideas or thoughts of these things were hovering before my mind", not
perceptions of things existing outside of him (Descartes, 24). It follows that he cannot come to know
of things for certain through sense perception. Descartes separates his notion of ideas in two
categories: the formal or material and objective. The formal and material notion is that all ideas are
the same. The objective notion is that all ideas are different. Considered formally, ideas are the
content of the activity of thinking and involved in the cogito. These ideas are clear and distinct.
When ideas are considered objectively, on the other hand, they are the mental representatives of
things that really exist. Therefore, the connections between ideas yield truths when they correspond
to the realities of the world in which we live. Ideas do not come from experience, but are found
within intellect itself. Descartes, however, states that these clear and distinct ideas do not necessarily
correspond to realities, as there may be an omnipotent deceiver. In Meditation Three, Descartes
describes three different notions of ideas and states that ideas can be adventitious, entering the mind
from the outside world by external forces. These ideas include hearing a noise or feeling the heat of
a fire. Ideas can also be innate, manufactured by the mind itself. An individual's idea of what a thing
is and the truth of that thing must come from his own nature. Lastly,

Comparing Buddhism, Vipassana Meditation And Beliefs
Meditation is a practice where an individual focuses on calming the mind by concentrating on their
breathing. In the Buddhists tradition, meditation is practiced as a way to be liberated from suffering
and to reach enlightenment. This essay will go more into detail about some of the Theravada
meditation practices such as Samādhi, Vipassana, and The Four Immeasurables.
The human mind has three basic functions: to think, feel and crave. The mind consists of thoughts
and emotions that are often times unstable and always fluctuating to the point that there is never
truly a peace of mind. Constant desires for satisfaction leaves the mind unable to remain still.
Meditation is often practiced to put an end to cravings, intrusive thoughts, and ... Show more content

The mind often fabricates false ideas and perceptions about the world and people around them,
however, by meditating, one gains awareness of one's thoughts and truly understands the true nature
of things by developing wisdom. The development of awareness from insightful meditation is what
makes people capable of removing oneself from ignorance (Swearer 98). Ignorance is the lack of
truly knowing or misinterpreting the truth about a person or situation. What Vipassana meditation
does is helps an individual to truly see things for what it is without the mind's false illusions. For
instance, in America, students are constantly pressured by parents to compete and do better than
classmates in order to be eligible for medicine. Students often times will do as their parents say but
fail to realize that while it may seem that their parents want what is best for their children, the
parents are actually guiding their children to a path of unhappiness. Pressured choices most often
always end up in dissatisfaction. In other words, students are being pressured to be materialistic
individuals and will have set up for themselves a future of unhappiness. In this context, students are
pursuing certain careers because a high paying career will provide more objects that one might think
will bring happiness is a choice based on ignorance. Further, insightful meditation allows an
individual to truly understand existence and omit the illusioned idea of the self (Swearer 99). Often
times, those who are driven by material, greed and desires consider themselves superior to others.
When people shrink their sense of self, is when one is truly able to see the world for what it actually
is, it is then that people are able to enjoy and appreciate their lives fully. The illusion that the self is
superior to others is eliminated from meditation. Vipassana meditation eliminates unwholesome
states of

Health Behavior Analysis Through Meditation

  • 1. Health Behavior Analysis Health behaviors, defined by the course book as, "behaviors undertaken... to enhance or maintain ... health," is an important aspect of healthy living (pg 39). As a Public Health Policy undergraduate student at the University of California, Irvine, the rigorous education I receive often results in high stress. In previous years to counteract the copious amounts of stress, I would engage in regular relaxation such as unwinding for a few hours at the beach. Now in the third year of my education, beginning upper division courses required for my major, I found it increasingly difficult to manage the balance between my workload and the amount of time personally needed to relax. I acknowledged I could no longer spend hours of my week at the beach when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I reduced my time back to 10 minutes. Day six, January 23 I was able to fall into the meditative state meditating for 15 minutes easily. Sunday, January 24, the seventh and final day of the assignment I increased intervals for the last time to 20 minutes. Although lasting the full 20 minutes feeling drowsy afterwards, I fell into sleep immediately after meditation. Feeling rejuvenated upon awakening from my slumber this is when I made the conscious decision to implement deep breathing meditation into my daily routine. Over the course of this assignment, I began to greatly enjoy deep breathing meditation. Continuing my regime of deep breathing meditation, I regularly practice this style of meditation. Initially choosing this modification for my body, it had positive effects on both body and mind. Centering concentration on my body, quieted my thoughts allocating my mind time to rest for a period during the day. Pausing my mind to focus on breathing made me mindful to my breath aiding my body when I became breathless, in need of a deep breath while navigating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Examples Of Meditation, Prayer And Contemplation In this section, a detailed analysis and discussion of the findings of my sources will be used as evidence in order to strengthen the argument of the research hypothesis, which is to what extent does meditation, prayer and contemplation contribute to an individual's physical and psychological well–being. It would be far better if one's self could achieve holistic well–being, improved peace of mind and relaxation as well as better thought processing without the need for any form of medical intervention. The scientific evidence of the many sources supports the notion that meditation, prayer and contemplation improves an individual's mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well–being. The first source to support the research hypothesis is a scientific journal titled: Meditation for Quality Improvement of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Byrd's study and test results clearly showed favor for the prayer group. The results and scores collected and analyzed clearly showed that the prayer group had an overall better outcome. The prayer group needed lesser amounts of ventilation, antibiotics, and diuretics. Based on Byrd's study and the data collected, there seemed to be a positive and beneficial effect on the group of patients that received intercessory prayer (1988:4). According to the results of Byrd's study, prayer has been shown to promote healing and holistic well–being in others, and so it can be reasoned that prayer has great potential to affect the physical and psychological well–being of the prayer–beneficiary, as well as for the prayer–giver him/herself. The third source relates to contemplation and the potential contribution it could make to law students, lawyers, and their clients. The source is a Harvard Negotiation Law Review. • 5. Meditation: Benefits Of Stillness Chapter 9 Meditation: Benefits of Stillness Being in Stillness In many ways, healing work is a meditative process. The ability to do energy healing or heal oneself is greatly improved with the addition of a regular meditation practice that clears the mind and allows the energy to flow. A simple definition of meditation is to quiet the mind. Meditation begins with relaxation, good posture and concentration on the present moment, noticing each breath. Even this simple practice, if done regularly, can change brainwaves, create more coherence between brain and heart and mind and body. Meditation decreases stress by promoting the relaxation response: lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate, and decreasing metabolic rate. The organs can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For some, the process of meditation allows the expansion of consciousness until it merges with the infinite. Deep in the subconscious rests all experiences one has had. Meditation can help one get in touch with the fears and expectations of the ego, as well as strengths. Meditation is a means of sorting out superficial experience from deeper truth. It can be a path to the important words of advice from Socrates: Know thyself. Using meditation to gain clarity about one's motivations and agendas will help the healer avoid projecting personal issues onto a client and will also prevent getting tangled up in the client's issues. Listening to inner wisdom, helps one make better decisions or have a better understanding of experiences. Through meditation a willing mind may be able to access spiritual helpers and guides. These experiences may be a function of the wise mind, personal projections, or beings of a higher vibration. They may appear as angels, saints, beings of light, or the aspects of the divine. These helpers may provide guidance or actual assistance in healing if requested to do so. On her audiotape "The Power of Prayer," Joan Borysenko tells a story about a collective of souls who are stuck in a room because they did not know they could ask for ... • 7. Descartes Third Meditation On The Existence Of God In this essay I will talk about Descartes meditation three in that god exits and that god is not deceiving us. Descartes at a point doubted everything, and he believed that everything he saw, everything he believed was real was false and that nothing existed as well as himself. He doubted everything that could be doubted and threw anything that might be wrong. He believed that we are probably dreaming and everything around us was false and that what we believe we are seeing or hearing was being controlled by someone or something else, that maybe we are not who we think we are. Therefore Descartes eliminated everything, but got to a point that he knew that he is a thinking thing and therefore he got to exist. Descartes knew that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Is God controlling our mind and doing what he pleases? Descartes does not think so. Dreaming or not we have control of doing anything we want to do, and in Descartes third meditation we don't know if the body that we think belong to us is real, we can still do what we want to do with it even if this body is just on our imagination. When I decide to lift my right hand in any random occasion, I decided to do it not God. When I decide to go to the tattoo shop and place a tattoo to my imaginary body, I walked into my car and drove to the tattoo shop and got the tattoo that I wanted. So how can god be deceptive or controlling what we do if I decided to do what I did. People could argue that the life we live in is a false dream, Descartes would say that we are not dreaming because in dreams things don't connect together and when we are awake things do. People die eventually but until that day comes people are living the same life and not waking up to another one every day. When I go to sleep my dreams seem so real although some things done connect together, but I always wake up in the same bed, in the same room, in the same house that I felt asleep in, so how is god being deceptive since he has giving us the control of our own lives and control of what we want to think or ... • 9. Yog Becoming More Than A Popular Exercise When most Americans picture yoga, they think of an old indian man sitting in a long robbed dress with his legs crossed in a posture that seems very uncomfortable, except peaceful for the majority of yoga professionals who are in healthy physical shape. Yoga is a system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well–being. This may include the control of breathing, simple meditation, specific body movements and widely practice for relaxation and health. Yoga is becoming more of a popular exercise because it not only helps lose weight, but also helps gain flexibility and strength. Once yoga is practiced for a while, it not only proves that it is great for the body, it also proves how great it is for the mind. Many Americans are getting more involved with yoga because it is easy to do and the benefits are amazing. Yoga can be done anywhere, in the privacy of your own home where you follow it through videos on the television, or in a classroom with a certified instructor who teaches you the poses and the breathing techniques. The Columbia Journalism "Everybody loves yoga; sixteen and a half million Americans practice it regularly, and twenty–five million more say they will try it this year. If you've been awake and breathing air in the twenty–first century, you already know that this Hindu practice of health and spirituality has long ago moved on from the toe–ring set. • 11. Descartes Third Meditation Analysis Within Descartes' Third Meditation, Descartes makes a circular argument on the Rule of Truth. Descartes's argument for the Rule of Truth is that he accepts them due to the fact that he has clear and distinct perceptions. If this is the case, Descartes' argument for the Rule of Truth seems to assume that distinct and clear perceptions set out to be true. Take for example: 1. Ogus says he always tells the truth. 2. If Ogus said he likes ice cream, then Ogus liking ice cream is true. 3. Therefore, Ogus always tells the truth. Although this is not the best example, this argument assumes what it sets out to prove. The second premise summarizes in a slightly different way, what the conclusion already states. This is a major flaw because the main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Rene Descartes And The Third Meditation Of Discourse On... In the Third Meditation of Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes, Descartes gives a proof for the existence of God. Descartes starts out by stating his general rule that everything he can clearly and distinctly perceives must be true. However, Descartes stated in the First Meditation that he can doubt things that are clear and distinct to him on the basis that he is being deceived by God. In order to prove his rule to be true, he needs to prove the existence of God and that he is not a deceiver (Descartes 70–71). Descartes first establishes that everything that exists, and has reality, has a cause. Everything is put into existence by something else. Ideas have objective reality which is what an idea is an idea about and all ideas differ in their objective reality. For example, the idea of a supreme deity has more objective reality than something that is finite. This is because something that is infinite is more real than something that is finite. Because ideas have objective reality, that means that they must have a cause (Descartes 72–73). Next, Descartes says, "it is evident by the light of nature that there must be at least as much [reality] in the efficient and total cause as there is in the effect of that same cause." (Descartes 73). Here Descartes is basically saying that it is evident that there must be as much reality in the cause of something as there is in the effect. For instance, there must be as much cause in a child as there is in the parents. Descartes now establishes that premise for ideas. He says that there must be at least as much formal reality in the cause of the idea as the idea has objective reality, and he clearly has an idea of God. Therefore, the cause of the idea of God must have at least as much formal reality as the idea has objective reality (Descartes 74–75). Descartes now establishes that the objective reality of the idea of God is infinite. This is because God is an infinite being. Because the cause of the idea of God must have at least as much formal reality as the idea has objective reality, the cause must have infinite formal reality. Next Descartes says, "I am a substance, that fact is not sufficient to explain my having an idea of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Counter Argument On Meditation Counter Argument Although admired by many very few of us truthfully know what meditation is. It is more or less mental activity aiming at shifting human concentration to something else; others consider that humans meditate when they visualize something that gives them peacetime or satisfaction. No matter what the scientific definition is, the goal is to slow down and, eventually, completely break the continuous activity of the human mind. Mariam Emara is supporting meditation powerfully as she is an Arhati Yogi, pranic healer and meditation instructor she is trying to transfer her knowledge to others and to inspire people to start practicing meditation. Although the writer of the article tried to promote the idea and practice of meditation, she relied more on her personal experience instead of scientific facts. She resorted to false assumption, logical fallacies and weak evidence from different cultures without explaining any of them. The reader would with the author's ideas because at the beginning she mentioned that meditation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first logical fallacy is slippery Slope – meditation can help, because it is the brain that ultimately controls the body. Meditation is a mental and spiritual activity, while the brain in the article context is a human organ that produces chemicals, renews cells and controls the physiological aspects of the human body. I.e. meditation as a spiritual practice does not necessarily lead to physiological enhancement. Another slippery slope is: "by using techniques of positive affirmation, it can help in weight loss." Weight loss is more problematic than this. The third logical fallacies false analogy – "Egypt has not always been fertile ground for a meditation culture...many people do not believe in meditation. • 17. Five Points Of Yog Yoga Essay Gi Kim PED 109–03 YOGA Carol Ennser November 3, 2014 Five Points of Yoga For this assignment, I thought I would be helpful for me to know about five points of yoga. Swami Vishnudevananda who was born in South India came up with five essential principles of doing yoga. The five points of yoga focused on mental, spiritual, and physical health: proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking and meditation. I think it is important to remind myself about these five points of yoga when starting a new day. The proper exercise is simply moving our body. If we do not provide natural movement to our body then a great discomfort will ensue in a mean time. Proper exercise should not make practitioner unpleased, but it has to make practitioner pleasant and it has to be beneficial to one's body. Yoga exercises are not only for the body, but also a gateway to widen mental and spiritual condition. Asanas is a yogic physical exercise, which means stable pose. It focuses on the flexibility of the body and the health of the spine. The exercise also affects organs, glands and hormones. Most often times, sun salutation is practice before the Asanas. Proper breathing and controlling breathing take important roles in yoga. In yoga, we use the maximum capacity of the lung when we breathe. We inhale deep slowly and exhale slowly longer and longer than inhale. This process increases energy and clears minds. There are three types ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Effects Of Meditation And Yoga The whole concept might sound like the perfect idea for a science fiction film. Even better, the gimmick in the last scene from an infomercial. Meditation and yoga have been long praised for their never–ending mental and physical benefits: they decrease stress, enhance your focus and attention and allow you to become more aware with your inner dialogue, helping you challenge long–standing traumas and misconceptions that might be doing more bad than good. Meditation and yoga have a truly transformative effect on your perception of the world and the way you react to it. But according to recent studies, meditation and yoga might also have never before seen effects, in much deeper ways. But, can meditation really change your DNA? Can it physically transform your genes? According to several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A 2013 study from the University of Wisconsin also showed that patients who engaged in yoga, meditation and practices that encouraged mental and physical well–being showed genetic and molecular differences that gave way to faster recovery from illnesses or stressful situations. But this is not the first study that correlates telomere length with a healthier lifestyle. In 2008, a study found that comprehensive life changes like a better diet, physical exercise and stress management increased telomerase (the enzyme that produces telomeres) activity in men with prostate cancer. The bottom line But the findings didn't end there. One thing is to stop telomeres from shortening. Another is to actually lengthen them. A study from Harvard University analyzed blood samples from both meditators and non–meditators and found that those who meditate have longer telomeres, opening up the possibility that yoga and meditation might have the power to physically enhance the telomere's ... Descartes Third Meditation Descartes' third meditation, also called "The existence of God," starts with the Meditator go through what he has discovered to date and how he is still very uncertain of the existence of physical things, but that he is confident that he exists and that he is an intelligent entity that has uncertainties, understandings, motivations, visualizations, and senses, among many other things. He is confident that he is a thoughtful thing and he evidently and distinctly notices this fact. He might not be confident without all pure and diverse observations can be certain. Consequently, he concludes, whatever he observes clearly and distinctly must be true. At one point, he believed he was sure of all kinds of things that he is now uncertain. These things ... • 23. Similarities And Differences Between Ballet And Yoga According to Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies, 8 million people, who are in United States of America, take a ballet class one time at the minimum past a year in 2002. In addition, the average number of frequency of ballet is 1.7 times in a year (Center for Arts, 1). On the other hand, according to CISION of January 13, 2016, over 3.6 million people attend a yoga class in 2016. The amounts of student, who want to learn yoga, are getting growing 20.4 million from 2012 (Yoga, 1). Therefore, there are similar and dissimilar points between ballet and yoga. Ballet and yoga are categorized by cardiorespiratory exercise. What is cardiorespiratory exercise? Cardiorespiratory exercise is that people, who do cardiorespiratory exercise, need to take oxygen when their body generates energy and burn their fat or carbohydrate. Additionally, exercise level is from beginning to intermediate so they can keep exercise for long time per one time such as, swimming, ballet, and yoga. These unique exercises, albeit, very different from one another, all effectively gave the participant an experience that stimulated thought, challenged the persons comfort zones and familiarity, as well as forced each individual to deeply compare the exercise processes and outcomes to their own common occurrences in their personal lives. Furthermore, the exercise outcomes often stimulated ideas and possibilities for personal development and growth, enhancing one's character and personality traits, and encouraged changes to their own abilities, habits, and behavioral patterns. Although I preferred some exercises over others, I found that I was stimulated differently during and after each exercise, and often found the exercise outcomes resonating for the rest of the evening, and often stimulating thought and discussion with others throughout the next day. Each exercise effectively allowed a participant the ability to consider, evaluate, and challenge their personal character, actions, and motives. The first experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and will be examining, is the insightful discussion and mindfulness meditative exercise conducted by the guest speaker, Bob McClure. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to incorporate meditation into our daily lives. I overcame those obstacles and have been meditating daily for two years as well as meditating periodically throughout the day! Through meditation I have experienced more peace and joy in my life, I've become less reactive and less stressed and I have more energy and creativity! And I know you can experience these benefits as well! But first, I think it's important to define what meditation is? Many of us have misconceptions about meditation. There are many different states of consciousness. Sleep is a state of altered consciousness, characterized by certain patterns of the brains activity and inactivity. An altered state of consciousness is when a person is not completely aware of their surroundings. Some researchers believe that we sleep to clear our minds of useless information. Other people believe that it is a type of primitive hibernation: we sleep to conserve energy. There are four stages of sleep. The hypnotist induces a trance by slowly persuading the participant to relax and lose all interest in external distractions. The participant is not under the hypnotists control but can be convinced to do things that he or she would not normally do. However, anyone can resist hypnosis by refusing to open his or her mind to the hypnotist. Another state of consciousness is meditation. Meditation is the focusing of ones attention to clear the mind and produce relaxation. There are three major approaches to meditation. The first approach is Transcendental meditation. Transcendental meditation involves the repetition of a mantra, usually a Sanskrit phrase. The participant sits with his or her eyes closed and meditate for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day. The second approach, mindfulness meditation, was developed from a Buddhist tradition. Mindfulness meditation focuses on the present moment. For example, the participant might move his or her focus throughout the body, from the tip of their toes to the top of their head, and paying very close attention to areas that cause pain. The third approach is breath meditation. Breath meditation is when a participant focuses his or her respiration–the process of inhaling and exhaling in a rhythmic pattern. Descartes argument that God exists clearly states that since I have the idea of God already innate in my mind, he must be an infinite substance with objective reality. An idea with Objective reality must be produced by something with the exact same idea with formal reality. Therefore, the idea of God is an infinite formal reality, and since humans are only said to be a finite substance (mind/matter), there's no way the idea of an infinite substance can come from a finite substance, in other words the idea of God cannot come from an individual at all. A Journal Article Review on the Effects of Mindfulness Meditation Mindfulness meditation is meditation lets feelings, thoughts, and sensations exists without judgement. It is meditation that does not focus on a single word, or mantra, one's breathing, or any one single thing (Tarrasch 2015). It is freedom to exist in the present place in time. Mindfulness meditation is important to study because it may have many positive effects in everyday life. These effects can go beyond just stress relief or a general clamming experience. "Indeed, perhaps the most significant outcome of mindfulness meditation is the capacity to adopt an ''observing self''" (Tarrasch 2015). Tarrasch (2015) said that the students used in the study were all female master's students enrolled in a course called "Meditation: Theory, Research, and Practice" at Tel Aviv University's School of Education. The method used for the study was journal article summaries from these students. The main body for this paper will provide information of the meditation practices used, explain the method of the experiment, and be a look at the changes experienced throughout the course. In the discussion, a review of the article will be presented. In the course many different forms of mindful meditation were used. Many were focusing on one's own breathing and letting thoughts flow freely without judgement, but other forms used that got significant time were yoga positions and imagining one's own safe place (Tarrasch 2015). This mediation allows us to be sure that when we perceive things there is no way that they could be wrong. Descartes believed that God created our mind and situated us in this world, with this being said, God should have given you a mind that reaches true conclusions about the world on each and every occasion. Your mind isn't incapable of making mistakes or being wrong. Basically, Descartes is trying to prove that God wouldn't have given you a mind that would leave you to false beliefs about the world for the simple fact that that would make God a deceiver. Therefore, Descartes thinks that God created us with minds that have the capacity to attain true beliefs about the world. "We are neither infallible nor hopelessly trapped by falsehood. It provides a more significant and tangible argument by having the other meditations co–occur. I agree that there is much logic to be found in the SCP, but I disagree with Descartes method of proving God's existence, and in this essay I will explain why. Newton's laws of motion dictate that an object remains inert unless it is acted upon by some force. It follows that the effect of that force cannot be greater than the force itself. For example, a boy scout cannot derive more heat from a campfire than the actual temperature of the fire itself. As far as physical objects go, Descartes is making a completely logical argument. At this point, we must remember that Descartes' is still dealing with the metaphysical. He has yet to prove that anything in the physical world exists. Descartes avoids this trap by formulating that the SCP not only applies to physical objects, but also to ideas. By applying the SCP to his ideas (which exist metaphysically), Descartes is providing himself with his sole criteria to judge between true existence and existence that is merely perceived. In order to show that ideas are subject to the SCP, Descartes points out a difference between formal and objective reality. Objective reality is the reality presented in a picture or idea, whereas formal reality exists in the object of the picture or the idea. Objective reality is reflectional whereas formal reality is actual. There cannot be more objective reality than actual reality, otherwise the surplus reality must derive from nothing, which is impossible. • 69. Mindfulness Meditation On False Memory The second stated "long–term meditators would show superior performance to short–term meditators". And the third stated "concentrative meditators would be more subject to expectancy effects...mindfulness meditators would show superior performance relative to concentrative meditators when the stimulus was unexpected" (Valentine & Sweet, 1999, p. 63). Using the Wilkins' Counting Test (a measure of sustained focused attention) the control group was placed in a classroom to perform the test while the meditation groups were tested post meditation sessions in a separate room. The test was comprised of a series of tones which each group was asked to count (the meditation groups were told there would be three rather than two sets). The results confirmed the three hypotheses, overall concurring the use of meditation leads to improved concentration with little difference between concentrative and mindfulness meditation (Valentine & Sweets, 1999). Through the importance of meditation, holding strong positive results with attention, the working memory, and concentration there was one more study brought up explaining the effects of mindfulness meditation on false–memory susceptibility. Wilson, Mickes, Stolarz–Fantino, Evrard & Fantino (2014) conducted three experiments on the effect of mindfulness meditation on false– memory susceptibility predicting that "participants in the mindfulness condition would be especially likely to form false memories" (Wilson et al., 2014, p. 1567). • 71. The Meaning of Silence and Meditation Christian spiritual writings are texts that help us connect to our spirituality and they also hold various themes or messages. Some recurring themes that have been uncovered from a number of texts are; meditation, silence, connecting to God and spirituality. Two themes that are fundamental are silence and meditation. In meditation we find silence difficult but this is a factor that we need to work on because it is very important. A hypothesis has been created that will assist in critiquing and evaluating four Spiritual Writings in their attempt to finding the mystery of God. Contemporary Christian spirituality writings suggest that deep meditation and silence are fundamental to us in order to search for the mystery of God. The next four paragraphs will talk about for authors and the articles they have created. These articles will be evaluated on their attempt to explain that silence and meditation, help us search for the mystery of God. The four authors that will be critiqued are Laurence Freeman, Cynthia Bourgeaults, John Main and Richard Rohr. The first resource was created by Laurence Freeman. He has created 2 articles that talk about the Silence of the Soul and The First Sight: The Experience of Faith. In both of his texts Laurence Freeman writes about how silence is fundamental to finding God and that meditation is how we can connect with God. He believes that many people are afraid of silence, which restricts their connection with God. Laurence Freeman is a Catholic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Evidence for Changes in the Body and Brain from... From personal experience, mindfulness meditation gives me a feeling of obtaining a healthy mind and body from the attention and peace I obtained. Such feelings resulting from proper practice of mindfulness meditation is not limited to my own testimony though. According to the Satipatthana Sutra, those who practice such in–and–out breathing become "ardent, aware, and mindful" ("Satipatthana Sutra," Accessed on 2010). However, it is unclear whether such reported experience is genuine or has effect, or if such mindfulness meditation is similar to a placebo effect. As psychological field of study advances with its technologies to investigate changes in the mind, using such technology to look at effects of mindfulness meditation would ... Generally, it has been found by researchers that mediators have decreased sympathetic nervous system activity and increased parasympathetic activity (Cahn & Polich, 2006; Harrison, Manocha, & Rubia, 2004). Decreased sympathetic nervous activity implies decreased fight and flight mechanisms, and increased parasympathetic activity implies relaxation and rest mechanisms. One study had mixed results about the effects of mindfulness meditation and the nervous system, because they found increase in both cardiac parasympathetic and sympathetic activity with their participants who went through a Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction Program (Ditto, Eclache, & Goldman, 2006). Yet, this study was limited because its comparison level was a waitlisted group, and the study also used a within study design in which novel reading and mindfulness training was randomly sequenced. Therefore, the lack of effect found in the study may have been affect by individual differences and a comparison with an improperly matched group of control participants. One study looked at cardiovascular changes from practicing mindfulness meditation, with health participants and participants with asthma conditions practicing Sahaja Yoga Meditation (Rai, Seti, & Singh, 1988, as cited in Rubia, 2009). Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a type of meditation that promotes to evoke thoughtless awareness on a daily basis. In the two groups of participants, it was found that those practicing Sahaja ... • 75. Third Meditation, by Rene Descartes In the Third Meditation, Descartes forms a proof for the existence of God. He begins by laying down a foundation for what he claims to know and then offers an explanation for why he previously accepted various ideas but is no longer certain of them. Before he arrives at the concept of God, Descartes categorizes ideas and the possible sources that they originate from. He then distinguishes between the varying degrees of reality that an idea can possess, as well as the cause of an idea. Descartes proceeds to investigate the idea of an infinite being, or God, and how he came to acquire such an idea with more objective reality than he himself has. By ruling out the possibility of this idea being invented or adventitious, Descartes concludes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descartes explains that the "ideas or thoughts of these things were hovering before my mind", not perceptions of things existing outside of him (Descartes, 24). It follows that he cannot come to know of things for certain through sense perception. Descartes separates his notion of ideas in two categories: the formal or material and objective. The formal and material notion is that all ideas are the same. The objective notion is that all ideas are different. Considered formally, ideas are the content of the activity of thinking and involved in the cogito. These ideas are clear and distinct. When ideas are considered objectively, on the other hand, they are the mental representatives of things that really exist. Therefore, the connections between ideas yield truths when they correspond to the realities of the world in which we live. Ideas do not come from experience, but are found within intellect itself. Descartes, however, states that these clear and distinct ideas do not necessarily correspond to realities, as there may be an omnipotent deceiver. In Meditation Three, Descartes describes three different notions of ideas and states that ideas can be adventitious, entering the mind from the outside world by external forces. These ideas include hearing a noise or feeling the heat of a fire. Ideas can also be innate, manufactured by the mind itself. An individual's idea of what a thing is and the truth of that thing must come from his own nature. Lastly, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Comparing Buddhism, Vipassana Meditation And Beliefs Meditation is a practice where an individual focuses on calming the mind by concentrating on their breathing. In the Buddhists tradition, meditation is practiced as a way to be liberated from suffering and to reach enlightenment. This essay will go more into detail about some of the Theravada meditation practices such as Samādhi, Vipassana, and The Four Immeasurables. The human mind has three basic functions: to think, feel and crave. The mind consists of thoughts and emotions that are often times unstable and always fluctuating to the point that there is never truly a peace of mind. Constant desires for satisfaction leaves the mind unable to remain still. Meditation is often practiced to put an end to cravings, intrusive thoughts, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mind often fabricates false ideas and perceptions about the world and people around them, however, by meditating, one gains awareness of one's thoughts and truly understands the true nature of things by developing wisdom. The development of awareness from insightful meditation is what makes people capable of removing oneself from ignorance (Swearer 98). Ignorance is the lack of truly knowing or misinterpreting the truth about a person or situation. What Vipassana meditation does is helps an individual to truly see things for what it is without the mind's false illusions. For instance, in America, students are constantly pressured by parents to compete and do better than classmates in order to be eligible for medicine. Students often times will do as their parents say but fail to realize that while it may seem that their parents want what is best for their children, the parents are actually guiding their children to a path of unhappiness. Pressured choices most often always end up in dissatisfaction. In other words, students are being pressured to be materialistic individuals and will have set up for themselves a future of unhappiness. In this context, students are pursuing certain careers because a high paying career will provide more objects that one might think will bring happiness is a choice based on ignorance. Further, insightful meditation allows an individual to truly understand existence and omit the illusioned idea of the self (Swearer 99). Often times, those who are driven by material, greed and desires consider themselves superior to others. When people shrink their sense of self, is when one is truly able to see the world for what it actually is, it is then that people are able to enjoy and appreciate their lives fully. The illusion that the self is superior to others is eliminated from meditation. Vipassana meditation eliminates unwholesome states of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
