2. Significance
โข Stones are abundantly available in nature
โข Stone is one of the oldest constructional
material used from times immemorial.
โข Stone masonry is used for the
construction of walls, columns, lintels,
arches, beams, etc., of a building. and of
various parts of building
3. โขStone are strong and durable.
โขWhen cut and dressed to proper shapes,
they provide an architecturally attractive
construction
โขStones like granites, marbles, lime-stones
can be given a smooth surface and then
polished to give an attractive look.
4. Principles of Stone Masonry
โขThe stone used shall be hard, durable and tough.
โขAll stones should be laid on its natural bed.
โข The pressure acting on the stones should not act
parallel to the bedding planes to avoid splitting of
stones.
โขSufficient through stones should be used and they
should form ยผth of the area in elevation.
โข The bond stones and headers should not be of
dumb-bell shape.
5. โขIn all slopping retaining walls, the beds of the stones and
the plan of the courses should be at right angles to the
slope.
โขJambs for door and window openings should be made of
quoins which are equal in height to the course. Their
length should be at least twice the height and breadth
should be at least 1ยฝ times the height of the course
All the surfaces should be kept wet while the work is in
progress and also till the mortar has set
6. โขThe hearting of the masonry should be properly
packed with mortar and chips, if necessary, to
avoid any hollows or very thick mortar joints.
โขVertical faces of the masonry walls should be
checked with a plumb rule and the battered faces
should be tested with wooden template
corresponding to the batter and a plumb rule to
ensure a constant batter.
โขThe stones used in the masonry should be wetted
before use to avoid moisture being sucked from
the mortar. Masonry should not be allowed to
take tension.
7. โข All the portions of the masonry should be raised
uniformly. Wherever this is not possible, the
stone work built earlier should be left raked
(stepped) so that the new work can be bonded
well with previous ones.
โข Large flat stones should be laid under the ends of
girders, roof trusses, etc
โข Stone Masonry should not be raised where it has
to take tensile loading.
โข Good quality of sufficient strength should be
used
