The creator designed the digipak and advertisement for Ava Manhattan's music to visually link them to her music video through consistent use of the color red, close-up shots of her face, and images of her in the corset outfit featured prominently in the video. This was done to clearly connect the projects and make Ava recognizable as the artist, with the goal of attracting the target male audience through Laura Mulvey's "Male Gaze" theory of featuring attractive images of Ava. Screenshots from the video helped illustrate how the color palette and shots informed the design of the ancillary materials.
1. How effective is the combination
of your main product (Video) and
the ancillary texts (Digipak and
advertisement) ?
2. • Having Ava Manhattan on the Digipak is obviously the main link from the video to the
cover of the Digipak, most dubstep artist are not on the cover of their CD’s instead it is
a lot of graphic effects, but I decided against this as I wanted her face to be the main
attraction and I wanted to follow the normal conventions of a Digipak.
• Looking back at my video I think the main aspect I took, was the colours. In the video
Ava Manhattans vibrant red hair, for me personally was one of the reasons I chose the
colour Red to be in my Digipak and Advertisement.
• She is also often seen touching her hair in the video and I think its one of the things
‘props’ that brings the video to life.
• Also because she is an upcoming artist, the picture I used on the cover of the Digipak
was a close up of her face.
• Often in the video there are close up shots of her face. Another reason for choosing
that particular picture was because I want the target audience to be familiar with her
and for her to be recognizable.
• Also the inside of my Digipak, the picture of her clearly shows her corset which is the
main outfit throughout the video and one of things to attract our target audience (As
we are following Laura Mulvey’s theory of the ‘Male Gaze’)
3. INFLUENCE.
These are some digipak covers I looked at , I did exactly what these covers did and had
A full picture of Ava’s face with her name and album name keeping it simple.
4. Here are some
screen grabs
from the music
video of Ava
Manhattan
showing how
often the colour
red is used,
whether it is
used to filter the
colour of the
frame. Or
emphasised in the
colour of hair .
Or some edits
that make her
hair look a darker
shade of red. I
think this shows
a clear link to
why I chose red
to be one of the
colours in my
Ancillary work
and I think this
shows why I used
close-up shots as
these were all
close up shots of
her face.
5. a screen grab from my video.
And a the image used for my
DigiPak
Although the visual links are
Subtle, they are definitely there.
When she
appears in the
video wearing a
corset, and the
image on the left
was used inside
my DigiPak – the
similar visual link
being the corset
6. Again I’ve used
Photoshop to enhance
the colour of Ava’s
hair to make it a
deeper colour red. Its
one of my main visual
links.
7. The digipak is clearly on the
Advert
So the audience can tell
That the products are linked
The album being called
‘Infinity’, although not a
Visual link, it has some
Link to the song in
The video. It shows
Dedicated fans will
The colours, Red, Black and White
Recognise it.
Have been used again to keep up
With the theme from the digipak
Ava Manhattan has again
Appeared on my Advert ( A different image)
Clear visual link to my video

work went

9. Do you think your target audience
would be attracted to them?
• I do think my target audience would be
attracted to it. The target audience being
males in their early 20’s, I have chosen a very
attractive and flattering picture of Ava
Manhattan. And the picture of in the inside
first panel of her in her corset would be very
appealing to males this age. Celebrities such
as Rihanna and Beyonce have covers similar to
mine (Who I took inspiration and ideas from)
and they have a huge male fan base.
