Evaluation Question 2:
How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary texts?
Real Products
Many big pop stars rely on their star image to
sell music therefore maintaining a consistent
image across a music video, magazine advert
and digipak/album cover increases the
promotional value of the product overall which
leads to better sales.
Real Products
Jessie J who influenced the layout of my magazine advert reveals coherency throughout the products through
, font and photography. Like Jessie J, I used the same image for my magazine advert on the track list of my
digipak.
Influences
The Weeknd was one of my first influences included in my mood board during the
planning stage. I was particularly drawn to his style of music video. His mis-en-scene is
kept simple, often in black and white with dark clothing or back drops, contrasted with
lighting to create a chiaroscuro effect. This adds to the emotion behind the lyrics with less
attention to the appearance of the artist i.e. The “male” gaze or the “female” gaze in this
instance. I wanted to mirror this style of music video and star image for my products so I
maintained the dark clothing and setting throughout, even when filming outdoors. I
imitated this particular shot from The Weeknd’s music video and used it in mine to
implement intertextuality.
Influences
It is evident that this was the style of product I wanted to create from the beginning as
Banks was another influence. She also focuses on enhancing emotion through
performance or mise-en-scene i.e. Black and white to reflect a melancholy mood.
Influences
While beginning to construct my ideas into their final products, I did some audience research. I
wanted some feedback on how I can make the products coherent throughout as it was evident I
wanted to use similar mise-en-scene and cinematography to The Weeknd and Banks. PJ Harvey was
mentioned in the discussion of ancillary texts and I decided that she would be my main influence for
the digipak and magazine advert images. Although I should have incorporated the black and white
into my music video, audience feedback revealed that the mood of the performance linked with the
lyrics sufficiently enough. It is more difficult to portray sadness in photography therefore the black
and white effect was particularly useful for the ancillary texts in order to maintain the same tone
throughout the products.

In order to maintain a link between the three products I
took any outdoor photos in urban settings while
maintaining the same lighting and mise-en-scene in any
indoor photos. Also using an image again creates a clear
association between the products.
