2. Memento
Memento is a pyscho thriller which
was directed by Christopher Nolan.
The main theme of the film is death,
getting revenge and memories. Its
about a man who creates a strange
system to help him remember things;
so he can hunt for the murderer of
his wife without his short-term
memory loss being an obstacle.
3. Camera shots
The most common used camera shots in the opening
scene of Momento are extreme close-ups. The scene
starts with an extreme close-up of a polaroid camera and
the moves to extreme close-ups of the camera, the first
characters face, blood, the other characters blood, a bullet
and the gun to the other characters head. Also used is a
low-angle shot of the first character to show his power
over the man on the floor who is used shown a high angle
shot looking down on the top of his head.
4. Lighting
The lighting used is very dark and with the use of shadows. However with a
bit of light to the right of the screen reflecting on to the floor wear the
bullet is lying, the lenses on the glasses on the floor and the characters
face. This shows the character with half is face in light and half in shadow
maybe to suggest mystery of his character.
5. Setting
The setting is mysterious and from first glance you cant tell where the scene has been set. It
makes the audience guess as it looks as if it could be set in an empty office or a warehouse or
an empty building. We only get to see a part of the setting, the walls behind the character and
parts of the floor where the props and the blood lay.
6. Titles
The titles are in a spaced out, blue, capital font. It starts with the
movie title on a black screen which then fades to the polaroid
picture where the title is even brighter. The titles then fade out
and the titles show with the casting and directing and editing
names etc. The title names appear in the same blue font but are
smaller and aren’t as spaced out.
