Evaluation Question 1
9 Frame Analysis
2. 9 Frame Analysis
The first frame shows our ident ‘Wide Eye Productions’ Which shows a mysterious looking
swirl of water on a misty dark background this helps to inform the audience of the type and
genre of film. The writing appears on screen along with a quite sound of waves which provokes
questions on what our film will be about and what the story line will entitle. These are the
kinds of things that we want our audience to think initially before being introduced to the first
scene of the film.
3. 9 Frame Analysis
The second frame in the film introduces the two main characters in a picture. This is significant ,
not only because it is the first shot in the film, but also because it will show immediately
whether the audience are already interested in your film or not. In my opinion horror/thrillers
need to be started with something slow moving or a fast moving sequence. This is exactly what
we have done in our film. The first shot simply consists of slow moving ‘childhood’ pictures of
the two main characters. We chose this because it was slightly different to the modern day film
openings and would attract our audience in a different way to most other thriller/horror films.
4. 9 Frame Analysis
The third frame is an example of an over the shoulder shot. This is the first camera shot in the
film, showing the victim checking her phone that is placed on the table as well as the first set
of titles. We used this in our film to make it look more appealing and to create a more
professional outlook for our viewers. In this shot we showed the victim placing her phone on
the table and preparing herself to walk out of the room to answer the door. To which the
second character will be introduced.
5. 9 Frame Analysis
The fourth frame shows an establishing shot of the hallway in which the two characters meet and
embrace, this shows the relationship between the two characters and helps to set the
atmosphere at the beginning of the film. We did this to show that the two characters have a
strong relationship but also to show a sinister side of the film in the respect that something is
about to test their relationship. This would create suspense and tension among the audience.
6. 9 Frame Analysis
The fifth frame is showing a low angled shot of the two characters walking into what
looks like a sitting room, which is where all the mysterious happenings start. In one
quick cutaway shot we see a black figure (in the left corner by the sofa arm) appear,
which is our second sighting of the antagonist which is following both girls. We chose
to use this location as it creates a homely realistic feel which helps the audience to put
themselves in the situation. The lighting is dark to suggest the atmosphere as being
suspicious and eerie.
7. 9 Frame Analysis
The sixth frame shows the shot of our main character running up the dark staircase
after all the power shuts off and a weird noise is heard throughout the house. The
lighting is dark to suggest the atmosphere has changed to being suspicious and
eerie. We used this type of shot to show some of the action that happens in the film
and to create shock and suspense for the audience. We wanted to create a fast
moving and sudden change in the atmosphere so as not to bore the audience but to
keep them on their toes.
8. 9 Frame Analysis
The seventh shot shows a close up shot of the main character being pulled from
behind by the antagonist. This creates the atmosphere of tension and shock, we
took this idea from many other forms of horror films that we have watched and
enjoyed due to the nature of the film and the way that it was created. The scenes,
sound and editing techniques that we used in this particular scene helped use to
involve the audience and to create the stereotypical atmosphere of a horror film.
9. In the eighth frame we have a shot of the main character being pulled back around
the corner by what appears to be a black unrecognisable character, this helps to
create a horror like atmosphere for the audience. We chose to use this shot because
it challenges the idea of other stereotypical horror films, it has the same
conventions of the low lit scene and the idea of not being able to see the faces of
the characters as the scene progresses into something intense.
10. The ninth and final frame that will be analysed uses a high shot from
which appears to be a landing and shows the second female character
walking out of a room downstairs and going to look for her friend. The
idea of this is that the house is pitch black which helps the audience
to feel tension and suspense. This connects to the conventions of a
horror film because the audience wants to feel suspense, tension and
eerie when watching a horror film.
