Wilbert the Wolf Essay
Once there was a wolf named Wilbert. He was the largest, most terrifying wolf around but of course
his name had to be Wilbert, not something intimidating like Bruce or Santino, but wimpy little
Wilbert. But that wasn't the worst of it, his parent's decided to give him a full name, a first, two
middle, and a last, and that name was Wilbert Oliver Laymek Fabi–ano, or WOLF as all of his
friends called him, well they would if he had any friends, he tends to eat them all. YUMMY.......
Everyone in the pack knew that Wilbert was a trouble maker ever since the time that they caught
him trying to blow down poor little innocent pigs houses. But as time went on his so called "thug
life" started to increase and his street cred went up dramatically. On ... Show more content on

Others say he was a mad scientist trying to rule over humanity by trying to make a muffin army.
Wilbert was so determined to find the muffin that he went after 100 pic–a–nic baskets (said like
Yogi Bear) every day, but as time grew on, he lost the will to search and only tried to steal a muffin
once a day. Humans and wolves forgot about him, no one knew who he was, and his name changed
from "The Muffin Man" to "The Lone Wolf". His thug life no longer existed, he had no more street
cred, no more friends, and not because he ate them. Wilbert Oliver Laymek Fabi–ano was a lonely
lonely wolf. So he decided to carry on with his horrible life and only search for a muffin once a year.
I bet your wondering what it is that Wilbert did with his life, well I'll tell you, right after a short
word from our sponsors. "What? Ehh what on earth is going on here? Umm hello, this is a narration
of a story, not a TV show! Whose idea was this? Hello? HEY MORON, BRING THE DANG
NARRIATION BACK!!!!!............"So Wilbert did what any "Thank you, Shut up and carry on"..n–
normal wolf would do "WAIT WHAT IS HAPPENING" "I DON'T KNOW" "OH MY GOD"
"WHAT?" "It appears that we are experiencing some technical difficulties so will be back as soon as
we can" Well I know what your all thinking, that was a complete waste of time in a story about a
wolf, but what I forgot to tell you was that that was a clip of

Descriptive Essay On My Football Game
"It's playable. It's just before the sand trap," I tell my opponent before walking up and switching
places with her. I tee up my ball and take a step back to look at my line. I position myself and the
sound of my club sweeping across the grass fills the air as I practice my swing. I wipe my sweaty
palms on my shorts to stop the club from slipping. Feeling confident I square myself up with the ball
and ground my feet into the short soft grass. I turn my shoulders, raise my club, and turn through my
swing quick as lightning, sending my drive straight down the fairway and right onto the green.
Grinning I pick my tee off from the ground and walk back to my clubs. I couldn't imagine a more
perfect way to end my round. I wait patiently as my opponent hits their ball right into the trees. "You
hit your ball out of bounds so you're going to have to take a drop and a stroke penalty," I announced
to my opponent as she looked at me with a sense of cluelessness. After hitting another ball up the
fairway I make my way to my ball and line up my put. I'm 10 feet out and I know that chance of
making it is slim but if I make it close enough I can easily putt for birdie. I keep my arms straight as
I move my shoulder to my right and then to my left gently but firmly, causing my ball to roll within
a foot of the hole. "Do you mind if I finish?" I question her. "No it's fine I have to pick up anyway,"
she dejectedly told me as she hit eight strokes to my two. Making sure I take a practice

Wolves In Little Red Riding Hood
In both stories wolves are portrayed as dangerous creatures. Throughout the story of On the
Mountain Trail the wolves are chasing after what they think is prey. Then in Law of Life at the end
of the story (paragraph 22) the wolves attack him and kill him. The wolves in both stories are
portrayed as fierce ferocious animals; they are creatures of the wilderness, hunting prey whenever
possible. They are not the sociable animals such as dogs that we are so custom to they are deadly
animals in some cases. For example: In the mountain trail once the characters started to shoot at
them the wolves immediately thought of them as a threat, or when you are lying there motionless
and if the wolves are hungry and in a pack you are a free snack to them. ... Show more content on

In the fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood the wolf was a trick so he could eat her and as a result she
ran away. In The Boy Who Cried Wolf, he was lier and eventually died. They were supposed to
scare us so as we got older we never saw a wolf and if we did it was a symbol of fear to us. But
because we have never seen them in person when we do we think of a way to either kill them or get
them away so that they cannot harm us or them, the main characters (On the Mountain Trail
paragraph 9–10 and Law of life paragraph 22). But sometimes we don't understand wolves they can
represent fear as the lone wolf represents when it's hunting alone without his pack and howls its a
nonsocial animal it just depends on its confidence with its pack. Wolves also mean in different
religions that you are strong and brave, or in the Japanese they worshiped them. But in most
religions they are terrified of them they have people protecting lambs from their vicious fangs. Or
werewolves when they turn into wolves they can't control themselves and everyone has to run and
hide from them. People had gotten so afraid of people actually turning into werewolves that if
people thought you were a werewolf they would kill you, because they thought you were
dangerous. That's why most people try and kill them instead of stopping to pet

Summary of the book Jim Kristofic, is the author of Navajos wear Nikes. Kristofic is an Irish–Slav,
whose maternal clan are the British and his parental clan are the Polish (Kristofic, 2011, p.186). This
book, is based on a true–life story about the upbringing of Kristofic. In the beginning, Kristofic was
moving from Pittsburgh to the Navajo Reservation with his little brother Darren, and their pets.
Their mother, got a job working as a nurse in the Navajo Nation Health Foundation. When Kristofic

went by, Kristofic started making new friends and did not hate Ganado so much anymore. He
learned things he never knew before. He first learned, that Navajos are not Indians (Kristofic, 2011,
p.13) and Navajos are called "Dine" (Kristofic, 2011, p.47). As years went by, Kristofic started to
appreciate the culture, tradition, and started to learn the language. Within the first few years,
Kristofic's mother dated a Navajo man and married him. Kristofic mother had two children for him.
A girl called Yanabah (Kristofic, 2011, p.99), and a boy called Glen (Kristofic, 2011, p.120). After

My Father Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play 'The...
After reading the short story, "Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw
Jimi Hendrix Play "The Star–Spangled Banner" at Woodstock" by Sherman Alexie, Alexie follows
all six elements such as ideas, organization, voice, word choice, fluidity in sentences and last but not
least, conversation. When looking at the Ideas of the short piece and how it was created, one of the
most noticeable things is the revealing of the plot. Just by looking at the title you have an idea that
the short piece will be about the relationship between the father and with Jimi Hendrix. Alexie
reveals in the information in a chronological order as well as use bigger details that later explain the
smaller details that were in the short piece. For example, in the beginning of the narrator ... Show

Alexie draws in the reader by first telling a short story about her father back in the 1970's. Alexie
then goes on in briefly telling the reader what prison was like for their father. Eventually moving on
to how the father met the mother and the relationship they father and mother had. This is an
interesting take on the way a child views their father and mother and how the father has craved
freedom. The fluidity of this short piece is excellent, it is not choppy and it gives just enough detail
without dragging the story out. It also helps that this piece is an easy read. One of the things that I
enjoyed from the piece was the comparison to how Indians would live compared to different races
mentioned in the piece. I though it gave the Victor the narrator some personality. Victor also does a
lovely job on creating the images of what his parents and their relationship, as well as his love for
his father. The analogy of Jimi Hendrix and freedom for the freedom was easy to pick up on,
especially for when the father had bought himself a motorcycle and found the freedom he craved
(something Jimi Hendrix heavily

On an Adventure
One day Mo the fox had a brilliant idea.
"I'm going to go on an adventure."
It was one of those cool spring mornings with the birds singing in the trees and the grass wet with
dew. It was the perfect morning for an adventure.
So Mo packed a day bag and set out. On the way she ran into her brother Finley.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
"On an adventure." She replied.
"To the forest?"
"No."
"The mountains?"
"No."
"The river?"
"I don't know!" Mo said impatiently because she was ready to explore the world. "I was planning on
walking along the garden path until I got to the end."
Finley laughed at that. "It's just rubbish at the end. But may I come with you?"
"Sure."
So Mo and Finley walked down the long garden path––beautiful spring flowers stretching tall and
swaying on each side of them, the heads of vegetables and the beginnings of herbs, it was a
wonderful smell.
Suddenly, they heard an angry, "Squeee!!!"
"Pig." they both said in fear. They hugged each other and shivered.
The bushes in the distance started trembling. The ground started trembling too. Then they saw a
dark round shadow and heard snorts, very loud snorts. They really wanted to run but they were too
frightened and now they were at the edge of the garden path. It was an open field with a pile of
rubbish in the center just like Finley had said.
Addy, the lone wolf was walking around the field.
The fox siblings were scared and didn't know if they should run from the wolf or the pig when they

Sherman Alexie 's Article On Indian Killer, And People...
Sherman Alexie was born on October 7, 1966, in Spokane, Washington. Being a registered member
of the Spokane tribe through his mother, he attended grammar school on the Spokane reservation in
Wellpinit, Washington. He was originally a basketball player but when he started taking an
anthology of Indian poetry literature class, he realized more girls were paying attention to him, and
he liked that. He said jokingly, "I should have been writing poems all along." (pg. 9), just to be
getting the attention of more girls. After taking creative writing classes in college, he began
publishing magazines, such as The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Journal of Ethnic Studies, New York
Quarterly, Ploughshares, and Zyzzyva. Alexie was also in Granta Magazine: Twenty Best American
Novelists Under the Age of 40, New York Times Notable Book for Indian Killer, and People
Magazine: Best of Pages. He also won the Lila Wallace–Reader 's Digest Writers ' Award in 1994.
Alexie is the type of writer who focuses his writings on depression, poverty, and alcoholism in the
lives of Native Americans that are living on the same reservations as he did. Alexie's novels, short
stories, and poem's make the reader have a sense of sadness for the main character, but yet also
makes the readers want to in a way admire and the characters, that you would think are in hopeless
situations, that they soon overcome. Alexie shows the lives of the Native Americans, who are trying
to escape their lives, or whatever awful

Things They Carried Compare Contrast Essay
How can two stories be so different yet so similar at the same time? In The Things They Carried by
Tim O'Brien, the author depicts the life of the soldiers as they are in Vietnam. He writes about what
the soldiers carry in their bags, but he gives it a deeper meaning. He writes about the soldier's life,
all the emotional baggage they carry with leaving their loved ones and the pain of losing a fellow
soldier. In "The Lone Ranger and Tonto fistfight in Heaven" by Sherman Alexie, Victor goes
through different encounters where he experiences racism. He ends up going back to his reservation
and getting a job. These two stories are similar through the freight, "any load or burden"
(YourDictionary.com), the characters carry and how the characters are seen as the enemy. Although
they have these similarities, they also have their differences. Their differences are the main
character's conflict with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Things They Carried, the soldiers were seen as the enemy because they were in Vietnam to
fight a war between the US and Vietnam. So naturally the were viewed as the enemy from a
Vietnamese point of view. In "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven", Victor was viewed
as the enemy because he was an Indian, which Indians were viewed as bad people at this time in the
US. The men in The Things They Carried were viewed as the enemy because they were simply
soldiers fighting a war in Vietnam. From an American's point of view, we would not consider them
the enemy, but from a Vietnamese's point of view they were malicious. O'Brien gives an example of
this in his text, "After the chopper took Lavender away, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross led his men into
the villages of Than Khe. They burned everything. They shot chickens and dogs, they trashed the
village well, they called in artillery and watched the wreckage, then they marched for several hours
through the hot afternoon..." (O'Brien

How Generational Trauma In The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist...
The way we live defines us, tradition defines us. Tradition is a very important thing. It is something
that spans many generations and is a part of one's identity. Tradition can define us. Therefore when
tradition is forcibly taken away it can hurt a lot of people and generations. An example of a people
who have had many of their traditions suppressed and taken away are the original inhabitants of the
Americas. Their tradition was taken from them and they were either killed or forced into following a
new tradition which erasing all of their identity. The effect this has on the newer generation is bad
because they will feel like a part of them is missing because their tradition was taken and it can
cause a trauma called generational trauma. The book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in
heaven, focuses on a Native American named Victor in order to describe how generational trauma
causes a weakening of tradition because it becomes replaced with alcohol and isolation. In addition,
Alexie presents how a rekindling of old traditions is a way out of this harmful circle.
When Victor was a child his parents would drink a lot and would neglect him because they dealt
with their pain by drinking. They drank because they were drinking away the problems caused by
the generational trauma they and the generation before them had to endure. For example, during the
New Year's party, everyone got drunk, even Victor's parents, left Victor by himself. Victor's father
and mother drank more

Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight
How culture affects our views Today's culture changes how we behave and act. The Lone Ranger
and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings are excellent examples of
this. For example, in The Lone Ranger the narrator is stopped by the police as they said "You're
making people nervous. You don't fit the profile of the neighborhood." (Alexie). Like the narrator in
The Lone Ranger both stores how someone's culture affects the way they act and think. Our culture
changes how we behave and react to everyday events. I will start by going through each story giving
and explaining examples and how they are related. The first short story I'm going to talk about is
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The first example of this is when the narrator is
stopped by the police and they said "You're making people nervous. You don't fit the profile of the
neighborhood." (Alexie). Right after this the narrator is talking about how he is unable to fit into
anywhere because of how the culture views native Americans. This is an excellent example of how
the culture around the narrator has changed how he thinks about others within his culture. Another
interesting event in The Lone Ranger is when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

deal with the culture around them. Its not that angels found that people find his interesting or
trapped him within the chicken coop. However, in The Lone Ranger and Fistfight in Heaven the
narrator tries a different approach and starts to act how culture expect him to be unlike the angel that

For decades discrimination has been continuously growing, being angled at minority groups. These
negative outlooks have created many barriers and disadvantages, with society, for those belonging to
different cultures. Each set of characters within the stories are created with different backgrounds,
but live with similar expectations and struggles. These barriers occur in day–to–day activities and
interactions, affecting individuals, and creating negativity. Paul K. Chappell once said, "To truly
listen to others, we must develop empathy. If we do not empathize with people, we cannot really
hear what they are saying. When we do not listen with empathy, we hear only their words"
(Chappell). White reading each short story, Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," and Sherman Alexie's "When
the Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," the reader is able to connect the stories characters
through race, culture, and ethnicity to create that feeling of empathy Chappell was trying to
introduce.
In the stories, "two kinds" and "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," we see how the
families each are treated poorly because they are of different races. In "two kinds" the family is a
Chinese family. When moving to the United States Tan must change to look more like an American
girl so they cut her hair. Tan explains her change by saying, "I now had hair the length of a boys,
with straight– across bangs that hung at a slant two inches above my eyebrow" (516). Tans original
look made her stand out too much compared to an American child. By cutting off her hair she felt
that she could finally become "perfect" (516). By explaining the drastic changes they felt were
needed Tan is showing how far individuals are willing to go in order to be accepted. In "The Lone
Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" the characters is spoken poorly to by an officer. When found
driving around late at night the main character is told "you should be more careful where you drive,"
says the officer continuing with, "your making people nervous. You don't fit the profile of the
neighborhood" (35). The young man is being told that people are afraid of him because of how he
looks. The color of his skin or the length of his hair automatically make

Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven
Based on the experiences and hardships of Native Americans in the United States, the stories
featured in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie display the
escapades of Victor and a few others such as Junior and Thomas. The collection of tales shows
various stereotypes of Native Americans that the author has identified with as aspects of his life such
as drinking problems within families. One of the main focuses of the book as a whole that was
present in almost every story was the relationship between Native Americans and other races. The
Natives in the story almost always inherently clashed with the whites of the story, however all was
not well between other minorities and even other Natives interacting with the protagonists. Race,
whether it is Native American, another minority, or white, does not determine the conflict and
tension between two people as displayed by Victor and Junior's interactions throughout The Lone
Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. In the stories featured in Alexie's piece, damaging
relationships between Natives and their own families, neighbors, and peers can be seen. In the tale
"Every Little Hurricane", the toxic relations between families and friends are exhibited as attendees
of a party begin to fight. Victor's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stereotypes In Reservation Blues
There Tonto stands, a brave Indian warrior, cloaked in a leather vest and pants, with a face painted
white, a dead bird on his head, and two swords by his side. Tonto perfectly portrays the typical
Hollywood Indian. In Sherman Alexie's novel Reservation Blues, the Indians in no way portray the
stereotypical Indian. Alexie acknowledges and elucidates this major misconception. He shows the
hardships of an Indian band, Coyote Springs, struggling to make a living in the music industry,
along with all of their family, friends, and relationship dilemmas. Alexie portrays how stereotyping,
perpetuated at the hand of the dominant white culture, often strips the Indians of hope and engenders
fatalistic attitudes. The closed–mindedness of the average ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Betty and Veronica were the first example's of Indian romanticization, coming to the reservation
with the belief that everything is sacred and magical. After Michael White Hawk had beaten both
Betty and Veronica, along with Victor and Junior, they chose to leave. Chess asked, "Can't you
handle it?" stating they wanted, "the good stuff of being Indian without all the bad stuff" and this
was the truth. Both Betty and Veronica had an idea in their mind, a stereotype, that Indians were at
one with nature, living simplistic and peaceful lives. In reality, the Indians are no different than the
rest of the world and have more than their share of alcoholism, poverty, depression, and aggravation.
After Betty and Veronica left the reservation for their home in Seattle, they received an invitation to
New York for a chance to perform for a record company, Cavalry Records. The invitation was the
same as the one Coyote Springs also received. Coyote Springs' private performance ended on a bad
note (literally), so Betty and Veronica were Cavalry Records' next best hope. Betty and Veronica
were "a more reliable kind of Indian", according to Sheridan. Veronica specifically stated that they
were not very much Indian, but Sheridan said they were enough. The sad fact of this occurrence is
that when Betty and Veronica become famous, with an Indian image in the media, everybody will
believe it without attempting to find out

The author, Sherman Alexie, is a Native American novelist, born on the Spokane Indian Reservation
in Wellpinit, Washington. In his short story, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven,"
Alexie makes the argument that Native Americans are being negatively portrayed, mistreated and
stereotyped in our country and by our government. Alexie uses a character born in the same
Reservation in Washington, giving him more credibility for the arguments he makes, through the
character. The audience Alexie chooses this essay for is primarily American Indians, although
immigrants and minorities are a secondary audience, who many, can relate to the stereotyping and
negative treatment of our government. Throughout the story, Alexie uses emotional appeal of pathos
and the ethical appeal of ethos, as tools to get his point across. The words chosen in the essay by the
author are clear, simple, and the story is put together carefully and easy to understand for the target
audience. In the short story Alexie uses flashback to think back about experiences the character in
the story went through. The narrator also recounts a dream, which is an allegorical representation of
how he believes people portray him with his girlfriend and insecurities he has in their relationship.
The dream explains the psychological effect that years of stereotyping and mistreatment has had on
him. The narrator has always had weird dreams, but they turn to nightmares while he is living with

Up until a few years ago, the four major loci of terrorist hot spots in the world were Manhattan,
Washington D.C, Oklahoma and Florida. These hot spots have grown to include Arizona and
Chicago. Attempting to make the determination if "Al Qaida, Iraq, North Korea, or Iran (with
considerable thought given to Syria, the Caucuses, and lone wolves,) being the greatest threat to the
United States" (Fisher, 2004), has proved to be more difficult than I primarily considered. Al Qaida

Because my organization falls into all three of these categories, or targeted preferences, I deem that
we are at a slightly higher risk for lone wolf attacks. These attacks can be prompted due to several
factors. One reason we could fall under attack would be based on the religious background of our
university. Another area that puts us at risk is the fact that we deal directly with the public and their
educational financial funding. As lone wolves mainly consist of individuals that snap, we could have
a student walk through our doors in a fit of rage because he or she did not get their financial aid
refund at the exact time they felt they should have, or that it may not have been the same dollar
amount they had anticipated. Our organization would also be subject to being an international lone
wolf target, as many of our students consists of international students. I know of at least one threat
of an attack that forced us to be put on mandatory lock down and required local law enforcement to
be stationed at the campus, as it involved and international student that was in our physician's
assistant program that was expelled from the university. A second incident was domestic, and
included an employee's estranged husband, which was under a suicide watch at a facility connected

Special Talents: Story Telling and Imagination
People always consider special talents to be really cool and interesting. Now, not all unique talents
are like this, and storytelling and imagination are a few of these exclusive talents. Imagination is a
conversational topic and can be used for many different things. A couple of these things include
curiosity, creation, and storytelling. Now, storytelling is the same as imagination in that it again is a
debatable topic. Some people think it is useful and entertaining, while some people believe
otherwise and think it is ignorant and a waste of time. But to Sherman Alexie author of, "The Lone
Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, " it was much more than that. It was perhaps more like a
lifestyle or something that has been passed down for centuries like Thomas Builds–The–Fire and his
family. Imagination creates storytellers who then tell stories which is very good because storytelling
keeps memories going for generations and generations and also help distract from the problems at
hand. When telling a story, every person has a different tactic for certain types of stories that they
want to tell. For Samuel Builds–The–Fire, the method he used is doing it for entertainment and
payment. This includes money of course, just like when he was with his buddies.
"Tell us a story about all that," his friends said.
"And if it's good, we'll give you ten bucks." "Twenty," Samuel said.
"Deal." (Alexie 132)
This interaction with his buddies demonstrates this it very well.

Analysis Of Sherman Alexie 's ' The Lone Ranger And Tonto...
Throughout "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" the theme of resilience is deliberately
presented. Native Americans past and present continue to face stifling issues such as racism,
alcoholism, isolation and suicide. Sherman Alexie makes it his obligation in his stories and poems to
show Native American resiliency through humor. By using his characters to show resiliency through
humor Alexie presents humor as an integral part of Native American survival. In Sherman Alexie's
best work to date " The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven" humor allows his characters to
display strength, hide weakness, to expose prejudice, avoid realities and to create bonds (Coulombe,
94). I believe Alexie's humor engages readers creating positive connections between individuals of
diverse backgrounds and disrupts tension between racial communities. Humor is often defined by its
fluidity, its paradoxes and its ability to surprise (Coulombe, 95). Humor teaches self–knowledge and
social awareness. Alexie's use of humor encourages readers to think anew by creating a space of
shared inquiry and reciprocal empathy. Many believe his play to humor and writing betrays Indian
"people by presenting them as clichés to be laughed" person's name says hey "while other persona
says he Avoiding to educate white readers and re instill cultural pride in Indian readers he actively
works against such goals with his humor" . However I believe Sherman Alexie humor is central to

Sherman Alexie says that being funny breaks down the barriers between people. In his short stories,

Thomas introduced himself by saying, "I'm half magician on my mother's side and half clown on my

beginnings of the westward settlement people have been saying things about the Native Americans
that are not necessarily true. They were depicted as savages and thieves. Like all peoples this is true
about some, but not for all. In fact, it was the Native Americans which helped the pilgrims settle in
this country in the first place. This never stopped whites from stereotyping the way we have. Early
films and TV shows gave Native Americans a bad image. Old western films are a good example of
this. In these the cowboys were always the good guys and the Native Americans were the bad guys.

With this information it is easy to see how telivision promotes these stereotypes. Some of the
stereotypes are good and are some bad. Most of the early black and white shows depicted Native
Americans as savages and murderers. These were the typical shows where the Native Americans
would kill white women and children and then the cowboys would go after the Native Americans.
One TV show that portrayed Native Americans as bad people is "The Wild Wild West" which still
airs on TNT at three p.m. on weekdays. The show depicted Native Americans as having no morals,
hating whites, and just being evil. Every time an Native American appears in the show he is doing
something bad such as robbing the stage, or raping some white women. One early TV show that
actually had a good Native American in it was the "Lone Ranger". Tonto was his side kick that
always helped the lone ranger to do good things. This is one of the first shows that actually
portrayed an Native American as a good person. Even though he was promoted as a good Native
American he was still played out to be less intelligent then the Lone Ranger.
Starting in second half of the twentieth century school teachers started to teach school children
about Native Americans. Children first learned about Squanto and how he helped the pilgrims
survive through their first winter in America. This gave some children a confused image of Native

Alcoholism and Poverty in Sherman Alexie's
"The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven"
Native American authors often share common themes that stem from life on reservations; these
include poverty, violence, abuse, and alcoholism. Sherman Alexie, a Native American from
Spokane, Washington, is not only one of these authors, but she may be the most successful and
well–known Native American writer who contributes these themes. Alexie often made strong
attempts to portray life as a Native American in her short stories in novels. For her, it was about
depicting the Native American experience. she does just that in her short story collection, "The Lone
Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven." Alexie uses literary elements, such as themes, symbolism,
and imagery to further aid her overall message of what life is like growing up and living on a
reservation. These experiences, as she demonstrates, contrast sharply with those of white society, as
they cannot fathom a similar culture.
The literary canon, being what we classify as available literature, consists of ethnic literature,
regional literature, working–class literature, and women's literature, to name a few (Krupat, 32).
These are all very broad categories made up of many sub–categories. Native American literature
makes up a small segment of the ethnic literary canon, yet it's been an oral tradition within Native
cultures for hundreds of years (Krupat, 32). What is interesting about Native American literature are
the common themes of abuse, poverty, and alcoholism shared by Native authors. This commonality
is due to typical life on a reservation for many Native Americans. Historically, Native Americans
were first exposed to alcohol when European settlers showed up, and took advantage of their naivety
regarding this debilitating substance (Lamarine, 143–144). Indian prohibition was the result, which
lasted until 1953 (Lamarine, 144). Today, the Indian Health Service Task Force reports 3.2 percent
of Indian deaths are a result of alcoholism, a number "four times higher than the national average"
(Lamarine, 144). Alcohol is the fourth leading cause of death among Native Americans, showing
how prominent this mental condition is within the Native American

No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his
religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love
comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." Unfortunately Native Americans have
deep roots with racism and oppression during the last 500 years. "In The Lone Ranger and Tonto
Fist Fight in Heaven," Sherman Alexie tries to show racism in many ways in multiple of his short
stories. These stories, engage our history from a Native American viewpoint. Many Native
Americans were brutally forced out of their homes and onto Reservations that lacked resources.
Later, Indian children were taken from their families and placed into school that were designed to,
"Kill the Indian, save the man." In the book there are multiple short story that are pieces that form a
larger puzzle that shows the struggles and their effects on Native Americans. Sherman Alexie shows
the many sides of racism, unfair justice and extermination policies and how imagination is key for
Native American survival.
Sherman Alexie show how non Native Americans treat Native Americans in court and day to day
life.

Summary Of Four Mother's Society By Leanne Howe
LeAnne Howe made this book to tell the story of American Indians who fought for their freedom
and land from the white men. She featured moments of her life in an effort to include an insight to
show that all American Indians, even now, are affected by the allotment of the American Indians.
LeAnne Howe even dedicated Miko Kings to "all the American Indians who've played the game."
Baseball was a sport that the Indians had been playing for years as a way to pass time and connect
the tribes (48) (LeAnne Howe, Miko Kings, 112) in this story. Baseball intertwined with this story
because baseball and the events that followed are emblematic of the struggles the American Indians
faced in the early 1900s. LeAnne Howe turned this book into a story that showed what the American
Indians had to go through. The American Indians had to re–create themselves because the time
period where this took place was when Oklahoma was becoming a state which meant the US
government was tearing apart their land and redistributing it to the white people that came in. ...

I appreciated the mentioning of the Four Mother's Society because this was the closest Miko Kings
came to representing accurate history. The Four Mother's Society was made up of the Creek,
Cherokee, Choctaw, and Chickasaw in Oklahoma. The entire purpose of the organization was to
oppose the allotment of the Dawes Act (Miko Kings, 126), so it felt accurate that Miko Kings would
be funding them (Miko Kings, 45). I feel like Miko Kings funding the Four Mother's Society was
symbolic for the way American Indians banded together to prevent the white men from killing them
and taking their land. Ezol wrote in her journal about the Four Mother's Society, stating her Uncle
said, "they are all trying to stop illegals, the whites, from taking our lands – and killing every last

Throughout the book, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven, life is heavily portrayed on
the Spokane Indian Reservation. Some factors of life such as tradition and storytelling are easily
noticed throughout the book; however, some less noticed factors of life such as resilience and
forgiveness might forgo the reader's attention. The challenges faced by those living on the
reservation are abundant. The way these individuals, especially Victor, overcome these challenges is
just a testimony to their character and emotional strength. Tradition plays a huge role in the
characters' lives that live on the reservation. Thomas portrays his respect towards traditional
Spokane culture by participating in Spokane storytelling. He is always trying to convince Victor to
join in on the storytelling, dancing, and ceremonies, but Victor seems uninterested. Compared to
Thomas, Victor seems to be quite removed at the beginning of the book. Victor actively makes fun
of Thomas and how much he cares about the culture on the reservation. Although Thomas is
constantly being made fun of by Victor, he still continues his traditions and still continues to try to
convince Victor to join in on the traditions. Towards the end, Victor begins to connect more with ...

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." – Peter A. Levine, Ph.D.
In Sherman Alexie's collection of short stories, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we
read stories of Native American struggles for survival in an American society designed to keep
Native Americans locked in the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Alexie illustrates the importance
of rejecting intergenerational trauma as a method of survival, by isolating the two main causes
intergenerational trauma becomes inescapable and giving examples that showcase the impact of
attempting to survive the cycle. Through the interpretation of multiple sources, it becomes clear that
the inescapability of intergenerational trauma is the outcome of internalized oppression and
pessimism.
Internalized oppression is just one factor that contributes to the inescapability of intergenerational
trauma. Alexie uses figurative language to demonstrate that the cycle of oppression is further
perpetuated by the concept of racial inferiority, poverty, and failure to achieve an education in his
short story "The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn't Flash Red Anymore". The main
character, Victor, sits on the porch with his friend Adrian as they reminisce their past and hope for
others futures. Victor claims that "Indians [could] easily survive the big stuff... It's the small things
that hurt the most. The white waitress who wouldn't take an order, Tonto, the Washington Redskins"

Comparing Black Elk Speaks and The Lone Ranger and Tonto FistFight in Heaven
Traditionally, Native American Literature has been an oral genre. Although Native American
Literature was the first American literature created, it has been the last to be recognized –and, to
some extent, is still waiting for full recognition (www.usc.edu). With the Indian being forced to
assimilate, their literature was forced to take on a written form. Although the traditional way of
storytelling has changed, Native American Literature has survived. In it's written form, it is being
shared with a larger population. Black Elk Speaks (Neihardt 1932) and The Lone Ranger and Tonto

In the story "The Trial of Thomas Builds–the–Fire," Thomas is put on trial for unnamed crimes. In
his testimony, he assumes several personae, including the voice of one of 800 ponies captured and
slaughtered by the U.S. Cavalry. He is also Qualchan and Wild Coyote, telling stories of murder,
extermination, and dispossession (Whitson, 132). This shows that the Indian still holds on to the hurt
and loss they have suffered. They cannot and will not forget what their ancestors went through to
survive.
Another area the two books share is humor. Humor is needed in order to cope with loss and move
forward. Although we see more humor in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Black
Elk Speaks has some humorous stories. For example, I found the story of "High Horse's Courting"
very humorous. High Horse wants to take a young Indian maiden for his wife. He goes to her father
and offers him two horses for the girl. The old man waves him off. He goes back and offers four
horses. Still, the old man is not impressed. High Horse wants his girl so bad that he goes out and
steals about a hundred horses. High Horse proved himself and got the girl. It was not the horses her
father wanted, but he wanted a son who was a real man and

The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Analysis
In the story "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" by Sherman Alexie, points out the
hardships of being a Native American back in the 20th century. These hardships were racism,
alcoholism, poverty and isolation. The story takes place in the reservation and it is about a young
Native American whom struggles in society because of his skin color, family's addictions and fights.
The narrator moves to Seattle with his white girlfriend who he seems to have an odd relationship
because they are constantly fighting. He becomes an alcoholic and moves back to the reservation
after a break up with his girlfriend. The story begins with the narrator who enters a 7–11 store at
three in the morning to be exact. The cashier looks at him in a frightened way as if he was a criminal
and becomes aware of every action that he does in the store. Of course, this is something that still
goes on today, specially at 7–11 stores and I once experienced it. The cashier acted in a racist
manner because he judges the guy due to his dark skin color and thought he was a robber. Although
the narrator did understand the reason why the cashier behaved that way as he once worked in a 7–
11 store and was robbed. The narrator started fooling around with the cashier by making him more
frightened, but the cashier noticed that he wasn't a bad guy and offered him the Creamsicle for free.

better understand a main character. "Often, it's not about becoming a new person, but becoming the
person you were meant to be, and already are, but don't know how to be." An Education directed by
Lone Scherfig is a film about coming of age and discovering whom we are. The film is set in the
early 1960's a time ruled by moral code and strong feminist rules. Jenny is the main character who is

In order to avoid those to paths in life, Jenny's caring but overly concerned parents Jack and
Marjorie and Mrs. Stubbs forcefully suggest an education at Oxford. In order to market herself as a
valuable candidate, Jenny must ace English, Latin, French (hence the title), and show cultural
breadth (her "hobby" is the cello). Yet, if all goes according to plan, Jenny will meet a similarly
cultured wealthy man and will no longer need to do any of those things. The irony, of course, is that
an Oxford education is simply a means of making the bait more alluring. Jenny comes to this
realisation early into Scherfig's film and asks the question "Why must I attend Oxford when I could
easily take a shortcut and reach the same inevitable conclusion by attending the school of life? I'd
have a lot more fun." David is a shortcut past Oxford and is also a lot more entertaining and fun.
Jenny must open her mind up to the possibilities that Oxford and an education can grant her. She
must again keep her mind open; sometimes the path that is not as clear is often the better choice. As
the viewer we want Jenny to go to Oxford and we can see how her decision will make a last imprint
on her. We want her to attend and it makes us reflect on all those important decisions we have all
had to make in our lives.

different functions, though. For example, when he ends his third grade segment with "I'm still

question "Oh, do you remember those sweet, almost innocent choices that the Indian boys were

the theme transcends from social outcast and discrimination to somewhat unconscious
discrimination but social acceptance. Prior to the seventh grade segment, he is explicitly mistreated

In a world where assimilation is the easiest way to survive, it can be difficult to maintain two
identities. The development of characters is the foundation in which people use to grow and become
successful in their path of life. Oppression, cultural changes, and pressure to conform to the
stereotypical image of success causes discontent among cultures. Many children have an ideal image
of who they want to be, and often their parents have a conflicting view on who they would like to
see their child become. In the story "Two Kinds" the Narrator has a rebellious attitude towards the
aspirations of her mother. The amount of pressure placed on her and her lack of success causes
sadness in the main character since she was not able to perform the way her mother wanted.
Similarly, the main character from "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" experiences a
feeling of inferiority from the racial discrimination and lack of financial success in his life. In the
story "Two Kinds" the Narrator does not want to become the prodigy her mother wishes her to be.
The idea of becoming a famous actor or musician, like Shirly Temple, was a noble idea from her
mother since she only wanted to see her daughter succeed. The pressure she placed on her daughter
to follow her orders and be obedient, however, was not in the likeness of the daughter's interests.
This example is evident when the author's mother states "[There are] Only two kinds of daughters,
she shouted in Chinese. Those who are obedient and those who follow their mind! Only one kind of
daughter can live in this house." (Tan 242) The fight that occurs between the narrator and her mother
causes a sudden shift in tone, which indicates that the mother no longer held the same high Johnson

Sherman Alexie's book, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, focuses on life in Indian
reservations and modern problems that Native Americans still face today. Through the characters
that Alexie creates the reader sees how poorly the Native American communities are facing today
and how Native Americans are trapped no matter where they go. One of the literary theories that
allow us, as readers, to see how these problems arise is Postcolonialism. Postcolonialism is a literary
theory that focuses on the impact that colonization had on native inhabitants and how that still
changes their lives today. Alexie is very critical of how white colonist came and took the land of the
Native Americans and destroyed their way of life forever. The chapter "Amusements" is where

They are very rarely seen in society and they mostly live in their reserves. Another similarity
between the two is that the rhinoceros also only live in the reserves and national parks. This means
that like the Native Americans, they won't be seen wandering the streets and the wild. Clearly, the
author adding in the idea of a rhinoceros in the spelling bee was symbolic to represent how people
view Native Americans and how they feel about society. In addition to the idea of the rhinoceros, the
idea that the narrator's family had no faith in him that he could succeed in the mainstream American
society shows the fraught relationship between the two. What happen in the story was the narrator, a
Native American man, who left his reservation to go experience life in Seattle, an American City.
The author writes "When I got back to the reservation, my family wasn't surprise to see me. They'd
been expecting me back since the day I left for Seattle" (Alexie 83). The fact that his family was not
surprised to see him shows that his family had no belief in him to be successful. They knew that the
way American society was, that a man who has been living in the reservation for his whole life
could not make it in the outside world. Families are supposed to be the biggest supporters of each
other's dreams and aspiration. When families know that you are going to fail, it is a good sign that
failure will occur. This is tough for native Americans

Sherman Alexie 's The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight
Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven is a collection of short stories
about the lives of the people who live on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The central protagonist of
the story is Victor Joseph who we see in many short stories and thus see the plight Native Americans
go through in modern day America. The novel shows us the many trials that the people of the
Reservation go through and addresses the many serious problems that modern Native Americans
face, such as racism, alcoholism, poverty, limited educational opportunities, and being geographical
isolated. Ultimately the state of affairs that the modern Native American race goes through stems
from the historical events of European colonialism as well as modern day popular culture.
One of the major problems that modern Native Americans face are the Americanization or "white
washing" of their culture. This is caused by technology as well as the isolation of the reservation
compared to the outside world. "Still, Indians have a way of surviving. But it's almost like Indians

system is not inherently designed to reward violence, but the trend towards competition compounds
on itself due to humanity's intense grudge memory. In general, because of the extreme rewards for
competition, it will be hard to turn the opposite direction through merely bringing the point of male
violence to light. The ultimate issue with Wrangham's proposal has nothing to do with the validity of
his scientific research, but with the basic value of introducing his ideas into our society at all. As a
general rule, public understanding of science is a societal benefit. That being said, introduction of
certain ideas can be dangerous when facts are misinterpreted. In the case of Demonic Males, there is
a fine line between accepting the genetic roots of violence and constraining the existence of free
will. The more emphasis that is placed on the instinct and evolutionary benefits of violence, the
easier it is for perpetrators of violence to disown their actions. In addition, many studies have been
conducted on how our understanding of free will can affect even our immediate behavior. In one
instance, after subjects were shown a paper that discussed the

Fistfight In Heaven
Out of all of the short stories in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (TLR), none of
them are as bizarre as "Distances". A story set in a post–apocalyptic world where all the other races
died in a flood while the Native Americans kept refuge on top of the mountains. The setting itself is
rather strange for casual readers as it opens up a new perspective to the idea of a world being in
turmoil. As readers and consumers of media we are used to seeing only a selected few survive in this
kind of scenario rather than an entire race. This allows for Alexie to let his creativity really run wild
in this story. He decides to give this view from an Indians perspective through the use of extremism.
The setting alone is enough to show how extreme this scenario is made to be. However, this is, in a
way, necessary in order to show the relationship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most reoccurring being the lost of technology. Our narrator references technology multiple
times throughout the short story and the impact it had on him. The first instance of this being a
transistor radio he finds in one of the old houses. This impacts him greatly as he was "too scared to
turn it on... what would [he] hear? Farm reports, sports scores, silence?" (105). Finding this radio
brings in the wonder and possibility of finding survivors or, what he may think of being worse, no
one to carry on the usage of technology. This is emphasized later on when he makes the comment
about the watch that was found by Judas WildShoe. The Narrator admits that he now has to
"measure time with [his] breath" and how he "makes mistakes' when counting (109). When readers
see the way how technology, for example, affects this new apocalyptic world they are instantly
hooked to that story. They can recognize the result of loosing technology and compare it with their
own lives, making the connection between reader and writer

Analysis of Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto...
Analysis of Sherman Alexie's 'The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven' and 'Smoke Signals'
Sherman Alexie based on some short stories included in his book, 'The Lone Ranger and Tonto
Fistfight in Heaven,' wrote the screenplay for the movie 'Smoke Signals.' Both the movie and the
book portray problems that Indians had to deal with, and how they dealt with it. The book is far
more complex than the movie, showing a wider variation of characters facing different situations.
In the movie there is Victor, the main character, which tries to be the typical Indian, or maybe just a
typical man. He shows just hate towards his father, who left Victor and his mother alone and fled to
Phoenix. The picture Victor has about his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though she said so many good things about his father and about things he was afraid of, Victor
did not want to show any compassion for his father. It is like the story on Real Boys, Inside the
World of Boys: Behind the Mask of Masculinity. Victor was hiding behind this mask so he would
not show his emotions. However, after the accident, he began to think about his father. He
understood that no one could be perfect and he finally saw that he really loved his father.
The book has many short stories that sometimes are connected with others. The book focuses mainly
on showing the degraded Indian society, where everyone is or will be an alcoholic. The story ?The
Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn?t Flash Red Anymore? (Alexie p. 43–53) is an
example of how the author depicts alcoholism in the Indian society. In this story there is a young
Indian that could have a nice future playing basketball. However, he turns out to be just like most of
the other Indians in his reservation. He was committing crimes and then started drinking.
By reading the book, the author showed me was that the only thing left for the remaining Native
Americans is to drink, since everything they once had has disappeared. Most part of the book is
about Indians having bad experiences in life and facing the loss of their tradition.
The book and the movie are great examples of how a man, or boy, tries to behave like a man that has
no fear, no pain, no

Wilbert The Wolf Essay

  • 1. Wilbert the Wolf Essay Once there was a wolf named Wilbert. He was the largest, most terrifying wolf around but of course his name had to be Wilbert, not something intimidating like Bruce or Santino, but wimpy little Wilbert. But that wasn't the worst of it, his parent's decided to give him a full name, a first, two middle, and a last, and that name was Wilbert Oliver Laymek Fabi–ano, or WOLF as all of his friends called him, well they would if he had any friends, he tends to eat them all. YUMMY....... Everyone in the pack knew that Wilbert was a trouble maker ever since the time that they caught him trying to blow down poor little innocent pigs houses. But as time went on his so called "thug life" started to increase and his street cred went up dramatically. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Others say he was a mad scientist trying to rule over humanity by trying to make a muffin army. Wilbert was so determined to find the muffin that he went after 100 pic–a–nic baskets (said like Yogi Bear) every day, but as time grew on, he lost the will to search and only tried to steal a muffin once a day. Humans and wolves forgot about him, no one knew who he was, and his name changed from "The Muffin Man" to "The Lone Wolf". His thug life no longer existed, he had no more street cred, no more friends, and not because he ate them. Wilbert Oliver Laymek Fabi–ano was a lonely lonely wolf. So he decided to carry on with his horrible life and only search for a muffin once a year. I bet your wondering what it is that Wilbert did with his life, well I'll tell you, right after a short word from our sponsors. "What? Ehh what on earth is going on here? Umm hello, this is a narration of a story, not a TV show! Whose idea was this? Hello? HEY MORON, BRING THE DANG NARRIATION BACK!!!!!............"So Wilbert did what any "Thank you, Shut up and carry on"..n– normal wolf would do "WAIT WHAT IS HAPPENING" "I DON'T KNOW" "OH MY GOD" "WHAT?" "It appears that we are experiencing some technical difficulties so will be back as soon as we can" Well I know what your all thinking, that was a complete waste of time in a story about a wolf, but what I forgot to tell you was that that was a clip of ... • 3. Descriptive Essay On My Football Game "It's playable. It's just before the sand trap," I tell my opponent before walking up and switching places with her. I tee up my ball and take a step back to look at my line. I position myself and the sound of my club sweeping across the grass fills the air as I practice my swing. I wipe my sweaty palms on my shorts to stop the club from slipping. Feeling confident I square myself up with the ball and ground my feet into the short soft grass. I turn my shoulders, raise my club, and turn through my swing quick as lightning, sending my drive straight down the fairway and right onto the green. Grinning I pick my tee off from the ground and walk back to my clubs. I couldn't imagine a more perfect way to end my round. I wait patiently as my opponent hits their ball right into the trees. "You hit your ball out of bounds so you're going to have to take a drop and a stroke penalty," I announced to my opponent as she looked at me with a sense of cluelessness. After hitting another ball up the fairway I make my way to my ball and line up my put. I'm 10 feet out and I know that chance of making it is slim but if I make it close enough I can easily putt for birdie. I keep my arms straight as I move my shoulder to my right and then to my left gently but firmly, causing my ball to roll within a foot of the hole. "Do you mind if I finish?" I question her. "No it's fine I have to pick up anyway," she dejectedly told me as she hit eight strokes to my two. Making sure I take a practice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Wolves In Little Red Riding Hood In both stories wolves are portrayed as dangerous creatures. Throughout the story of On the Mountain Trail the wolves are chasing after what they think is prey. Then in Law of Life at the end of the story (paragraph 22) the wolves attack him and kill him. The wolves in both stories are portrayed as fierce ferocious animals; they are creatures of the wilderness, hunting prey whenever possible. They are not the sociable animals such as dogs that we are so custom to they are deadly animals in some cases. For example: In the mountain trail once the characters started to shoot at them the wolves immediately thought of them as a threat, or when you are lying there motionless and if the wolves are hungry and in a pack you are a free snack to them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood the wolf was a trick so he could eat her and as a result she ran away. In The Boy Who Cried Wolf, he was lier and eventually died. They were supposed to scare us so as we got older we never saw a wolf and if we did it was a symbol of fear to us. But because we have never seen them in person when we do we think of a way to either kill them or get them away so that they cannot harm us or them, the main characters (On the Mountain Trail paragraph 9–10 and Law of life paragraph 22). But sometimes we don't understand wolves they can represent fear as the lone wolf represents when it's hunting alone without his pack and howls its a nonsocial animal it just depends on its confidence with its pack. Wolves also mean in different religions that you are strong and brave, or in the Japanese they worshiped them. But in most religions they are terrified of them they have people protecting lambs from their vicious fangs. Or werewolves when they turn into wolves they can't control themselves and everyone has to run and hide from them. People had gotten so afraid of people actually turning into werewolves that if people thought you were a werewolf they would kill you, because they thought you were dangerous. That's why most people try and kill them instead of stopping to pet ... • 9. My Father Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play 'The... After reading the short story, "Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play "The Star–Spangled Banner" at Woodstock" by Sherman Alexie, Alexie follows all six elements such as ideas, organization, voice, word choice, fluidity in sentences and last but not least, conversation. When looking at the Ideas of the short piece and how it was created, one of the most noticeable things is the revealing of the plot. Just by looking at the title you have an idea that the short piece will be about the relationship between the father and with Jimi Hendrix. Alexie reveals in the information in a chronological order as well as use bigger details that later explain the smaller details that were in the short piece. For example, in the beginning of the narrator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alexie draws in the reader by first telling a short story about her father back in the 1970's. Alexie then goes on in briefly telling the reader what prison was like for their father. Eventually moving on to how the father met the mother and the relationship they father and mother had. This is an interesting take on the way a child views their father and mother and how the father has craved freedom. The fluidity of this short piece is excellent, it is not choppy and it gives just enough detail without dragging the story out. It also helps that this piece is an easy read. One of the things that I enjoyed from the piece was the comparison to how Indians would live compared to different races mentioned in the piece. I though it gave the Victor the narrator some personality. Victor also does a lovely job on creating the images of what his parents and their relationship, as well as his love for his father. The analogy of Jimi Hendrix and freedom for the freedom was easy to pick up on, especially for when the father had bought himself a motorcycle and found the freedom he craved (something Jimi Hendrix heavily ... • 11. On an Adventure One day Mo the fox had a brilliant idea. "I'm going to go on an adventure." It was one of those cool spring mornings with the birds singing in the trees and the grass wet with dew. It was the perfect morning for an adventure. So Mo packed a day bag and set out. On the way she ran into her brother Finley. "Where are you going?" he asked. "On an adventure." She replied. "To the forest?" "No." "The mountains?" "No." "The river?" "I don't know!" Mo said impatiently because she was ready to explore the world. "I was planning on walking along the garden path until I got to the end." Finley laughed at that. "It's just rubbish at the end. But may I come with you?" "Sure." So Mo and Finley walked down the long garden path––beautiful spring flowers stretching tall and swaying on each side of them, the heads of vegetables and the beginnings of herbs, it was a wonderful smell. Suddenly, they heard an angry, "Squeee!!!"

  • 14. Sherman Alexie 's Article On Indian Killer, And People... Sherman Alexie was born on October 7, 1966, in Spokane, Washington. Being a registered member of the Spokane tribe through his mother, he attended grammar school on the Spokane reservation in Wellpinit, Washington. He was originally a basketball player but when he started taking an anthology of Indian poetry literature class, he realized more girls were paying attention to him, and he liked that. He said jokingly, "I should have been writing poems all along." (pg. 9), just to be getting the attention of more girls. After taking creative writing classes in college, he began publishing magazines, such as The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Journal of Ethnic Studies, New York Quarterly, Ploughshares, and Zyzzyva. Alexie was also in Granta Magazine: Twenty Best American Novelists Under the Age of 40, New York Times Notable Book for Indian Killer, and People Magazine: Best of Pages. He also won the Lila Wallace–Reader 's Digest Writers ' Award in 1994. Alexie is the type of writer who focuses his writings on depression, poverty, and alcoholism in the lives of Native Americans that are living on the same reservations as he did. Alexie's novels, short stories, and poem's make the reader have a sense of sadness for the main character, but yet also makes the readers want to in a way admire and the characters, that you would think are in hopeless situations, that they soon overcome. • 16. Things They Carried Compare Contrast Essay How can two stories be so different yet so similar at the same time? In The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, the author depicts the life of the soldiers as they are in Vietnam. He writes about what the soldiers carry in their bags, but he gives it a deeper meaning. He writes about the soldier's life, all the emotional baggage they carry with leaving their loved ones and the pain of losing a fellow soldier. In "The Lone Ranger and Tonto fistfight in Heaven" by Sherman Alexie, Victor goes through different encounters where he experiences racism. He ends up going back to his reservation and getting a job. The men in The Things They Carried were viewed as the enemy because they were simply soldiers fighting a war in Vietnam. From an American's point of view, we would not consider them the enemy, but from a Vietnamese's point of view they were malicious. • 18. How Generational Trauma In The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist... The way we live defines us, tradition defines us. Tradition is a very important thing. It is something that spans many generations and is a part of one's identity. Tradition can define us. Therefore when tradition is forcibly taken away it can hurt a lot of people and generations. An example of a people who have had many of their traditions suppressed and taken away are the original inhabitants of the Americas. Their tradition was taken from them and they were either killed or forced into following a new tradition which erasing all of their identity. The effect this has on the newer generation is bad because they will feel like a part of them is missing because their tradition was taken and it can cause a trauma called generational trauma. The book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in heaven, focuses on a Native American named Victor in order to describe how generational trauma causes a weakening of tradition because it becomes replaced with alcohol and isolation. In addition, Alexie presents how a rekindling of old traditions is a way out of this harmful circle. When Victor was a child his parents would drink a lot and would neglect him because they dealt with their pain by drinking. They drank because they were drinking away the problems caused by the generational trauma they and the generation before them had to endure. For example, during the New Year's party, everyone got drunk, even Victor's parents, left Victor by himself. Victor's father and mother drank more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight How culture affects our views Today's culture changes how we behave and act. The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings are excellent examples of this. For example, in The Lone Ranger the narrator is stopped by the police as they said "You're making people nervous. You don't fit the profile of the neighborhood." (Alexie). Like the narrator in The Lone Ranger both stores how someone's culture affects the way they act and think. Our culture changes how we behave and react to everyday events. I will start by going through each story giving and explaining examples and how they are related. The first short story I'm going to talk about is The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The first example of this is when the narrator is stopped by the police and they said "You're making people nervous. You don't fit the profile of the neighborhood." (Alexie). Right after this the narrator is talking about how he is unable to fit into anywhere because of how the culture views native Americans. This is an excellent example of how the culture around the narrator has changed how he thinks about others within his culture. Another interesting event in The Lone Ranger is when ... • 22. Analysis Of 'When The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In... For decades discrimination has been continuously growing, being angled at minority groups. These negative outlooks have created many barriers and disadvantages, with society, for those belonging to different cultures. Each set of characters within the stories are created with different backgrounds, but live with similar expectations and struggles. These barriers occur in day–to–day activities and interactions, affecting individuals, and creating negativity. Paul K. Chappell once said, "To truly listen to others, we must develop empathy. If we do not empathize with people, we cannot really hear what they are saying. When we do not listen with empathy, we hear only their words" (Chappell). White reading each short story, Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," and Sherman Alexie's "When the Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," the reader is able to connect the stories characters through race, culture, and ethnicity to create that feeling of empathy Chappell was trying to introduce. In the stories, "two kinds" and "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," we see how the families each are treated poorly because they are of different races. In "two kinds" the family is a Chinese family. When moving to the United States Tan must change to look more like an American girl so they cut her hair. Tan explains her change by saying, "I now had hair the length of a boys, with straight– across bangs that hung at a slant two inches above my eyebrow" (516). Tans original look made her stand out too much compared to an American child. By cutting off her hair she felt that she could finally become "perfect" (516). By explaining the drastic changes they felt were needed Tan is showing how far individuals are willing to go in order to be accepted. In "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" the characters is spoken poorly to by an officer. When found driving around late at night the main character is told "you should be more careful where you drive," says the officer continuing with, "your making people nervous. • 24. Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Based on the experiences and hardships of Native Americans in the United States, the stories featured in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie display the escapades of Victor and a few others such as Junior and Thomas. The collection of tales shows various stereotypes of Native Americans that the author has identified with as aspects of his life such as drinking problems within families. One of the main focuses of the book as a whole that was present in almost every story was the relationship between Native Americans and other races. The Natives in the story almost always inherently clashed with the whites of the story, however all was not well between other minorities and even other Natives interacting with the protagonists. Race, whether it is Native American, another minority, or white, does not determine the conflict and tension between two people as displayed by Victor and Junior's interactions throughout The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. In the stories featured in Alexie's piece, damaging relationships between Natives and their own families, neighbors, and peers can be seen. Alexie acknowledges and elucidates this major misconception. He shows the hardships of an Indian band, Coyote Springs, struggling to make a living in the music industry, along with all of their family, friends, and relationship dilemmas. In reality, the Indians are no different than the rest of the world and have more than their share of alcoholism, poverty, depression, and aggravation. After Betty and Veronica left the reservation for their home in Seattle, they received an invitation to New York for a chance to perform for a record company, Cavalry Records. The invitation was the same as the one Coyote Springs also received. Coyote Springs' private performance ended on a bad note (literally), so Betty and Veronica were Cavalry Records' next best hope. In his short story, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," Alexie makes the argument that Native Americans are being negatively portrayed, mistreated and stereotyped in our country and by our government. Alexie uses a character born in the same Reservation in Washington, giving him more credibility for the arguments he makes, through the character. The audience Alexie chooses this essay for is primarily American Indians, although immigrants and minorities are a secondary audience, who many, can relate to the stereotyping and negative treatment of our government. Throughout the story, Alexie uses emotional appeal of pathos and the ethical appeal of ethos, as tools to get his point across. The words chosen in the essay by the author are clear, simple, and the story is put together carefully and easy to understand for the target audience. In the short story Alexie uses flashback to think back about experiences the character in the story went through. The narrator also recounts a dream, which is an allegorical representation of how he believes people portray him with his girlfriend and insecurities he has in their relationship. The dream explains the psychological effect that years of stereotyping and mistreatment has had on him. Another area that puts us at risk is the fact that we deal directly with the public and their educational financial funding. As lone wolves mainly consist of individuals that snap, we could have a student walk through our doors in a fit of rage because he or she did not get their financial aid refund at the exact time they felt they should have, or that it may not have been the same dollar amount they had anticipated. Now, not all unique talents are like this, and storytelling and imagination are a few of these exclusive talents. Imagination is a conversational topic and can be used for many different things. A couple of these things include curiosity, creation, and storytelling. Now, storytelling is the same as imagination in that it again is a debatable topic. Some people think it is useful and entertaining, while some people believe otherwise and think it is ignorant and a waste of time. But to Sherman Alexie author of, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, " it was much more than that. It was perhaps more like a lifestyle or something that has been passed down for centuries like Thomas Builds–The–Fire and his family. Imagination creates storytellers who then tell stories which is very good because storytelling keeps memories going for generations and generations and also help distract from the problems at hand. When telling a story, every person has a different tactic for certain types of stories that they want to tell. For Samuel Builds–The–Fire, the method he used is doing it for entertainment and payment. This includes money of course, just like when he was with his buddies. • 34. Analysis Of Sherman Alexie 's ' The Lone Ranger And Tonto... Throughout "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" the theme of resilience is deliberately presented. Native Americans past and present continue to face stifling issues such as racism, alcoholism, isolation and suicide. Sherman Alexie makes it his obligation in his stories and poems to show Native American resiliency through humor. By using his characters to show resiliency through humor Alexie presents humor as an integral part of Native American survival. In Sherman Alexie's best work to date " The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven" humor allows his characters to display strength, hide weakness, to expose prejudice, avoid realities and to create bonds (Coulombe, 94). I believe Alexie's humor engages readers creating positive connections between individuals of diverse backgrounds and disrupts tension between racial communities. Humor is often defined by its fluidity, its paradoxes and its ability to surprise (Coulombe, 95). Humor teaches self–knowledge and social awareness. Alexie's use of humor encourages readers to think anew by creating a space of shared inquiry and reciprocal empathy. Many believe his play to humor and writing betrays Indian "people by presenting them as clichés to be laughed" person's name says hey "while other persona says he Avoiding to educate white readers and re instill cultural pride in Indian readers he actively works against such goals with his humor" . Since the beginnings of the westward settlement people have been saying things about the Native Americans that are not necessarily true. They were depicted as savages and thieves. Like all peoples this is true about some, but not for all. In fact, it was the Native Americans which helped the pilgrims settle in this country in the first place. One TV show that portrayed Native Americans as bad people is "The Wild Wild West" which still airs on TNT at three p.m. on weekdays. The show depicted Native Americans as having no morals, hating whites, and just being evil. • 40. The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Analysis Alcoholism and Poverty in Sherman Alexie's "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" Native American authors often share common themes that stem from life on reservations; these include poverty, violence, abuse, and alcoholism. Sherman Alexie, a Native American from Spokane, Washington, is not only one of these authors, but she may be the most successful and well–known Native American writer who contributes these themes. Alexie often made strong attempts to portray life as a Native American in her short stories in novels. For her, it was about depicting the Native American experience. she does just that in her short story collection, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven." Alexie uses literary elements, such as themes, symbolism, and imagery to further aid her overall message of what life is like growing up and living on a reservation. These experiences, as she demonstrates, contrast sharply with those of white society, as they cannot fathom a similar culture. The literary canon, being what we classify as available literature, consists of ethnic literature, regional literature, working–class literature, and women's literature, to name a few (Krupat, 32). These are all very broad categories made up of many sub–categories. Native American literature makes up a small segment of the ethnic literary canon, yet it's been an oral tradition within Native cultures for hundreds of years (Krupat, 32). What is interesting about Native American literature are the common themes of abuse, poverty, and alcoholism shared by Native authors. This commonality is due to typical life on a reservation for many Native Americans. Historically, Native Americans were first exposed to alcohol when European settlers showed up, and took advantage of their naivety regarding this debilitating substance (Lamarine, 143–144). Indian prohibition was the result, which lasted until 1953 (Lamarine, 144). Today, the Indian Health Service Task Force reports 3.2 percent of Indian deaths are a result of alcoholism, a number "four times higher than the national average" (Lamarine, 144). Alcohol is the fourth leading cause of death among Native Americans, showing how prominent this mental condition is within the Native American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Summary Of Four Mother's Society By Leanne Howe LeAnne Howe made this book to tell the story of American Indians who fought for their freedom and land from the white men. She featured moments of her life in an effort to include an insight to show that all American Indians, even now, are affected by the allotment of the American Indians. LeAnne Howe even dedicated Miko Kings to "all the American Indians who've played the game." Baseball was a sport that the Indians had been playing for years as a way to pass time and connect the tribes (48) (LeAnne Howe, Miko Kings, 112) in this story. Baseball intertwined with this story because baseball and the events that followed are emblematic of the struggles the American Indians faced in the early 1900s. LeAnne Howe turned this book into a story that showed what the American Indians had to go through. • 48. Analysis Of The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven... "Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." – Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. In Sherman Alexie's collection of short stories, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we read stories of Native American struggles for survival in an American society designed to keep Native Americans locked in the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Alexie illustrates the importance of rejecting intergenerational trauma as a method of survival, by isolating the two main causes intergenerational trauma becomes inescapable and giving examples that showcase the impact of attempting to survive the cycle. Through the interpretation of multiple sources, it becomes clear that the inescapability of intergenerational trauma is the outcome of internalized oppression and pessimism. Internalized oppression is just one factor that contributes to the inescapability of intergenerational trauma. Alexie uses figurative language to demonstrate that the cycle of oppression is further perpetuated by the concept of racial inferiority, poverty, and failure to achieve an education in his short story "The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn't Flash Red Anymore". The main character, Victor, sits on the porch with his friend Adrian as they reminisce their past and hope for others futures. Victor claims that "Indians [could] easily survive the big stuff... Comparing Black Elk Speaks and The Lone Ranger and Tonto FistFight in Heaven Traditionally, Native American Literature has been an oral genre. Although Native American Literature was the first American literature created, it has been the last to be recognized –and, to some extent, is still waiting for full recognition (www.usc.edu). With the Indian being forced to assimilate, their literature was forced to take on a written form. Although the traditional way of storytelling has changed, Native American Literature has survived. In it's written form, it is being shared with a larger population. In the story "The Trial of Thomas Builds–the–Fire," Thomas is put on trial for unnamed crimes. In his testimony, he assumes several personae, including the voice of one of 800 ponies captured and slaughtered by the U.S. Cavalry. He is also Qualchan and Wild Coyote, telling stories of murder, extermination, and dispossession (Whitson, 132). This shows that the Indian still holds on to the hurt and loss they have suffered. They cannot and will not forget what their ancestors went through to survive. Another area the two books share is humor. Humor is needed in order to cope with loss and move forward. Although we see more humor in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Black Elk Speaks has some humorous stories. For example, I found the story of "High Horse's Courting" very humorous. High Horse wants to take a young Indian maiden for his wife. He goes to her father and offers him two horses for the girl. The old man waves him off. He goes back and offers four horses. Still, the old man is not impressed. High Horse wants his girl so bad that he goes out and steals about a hundred horses. High Horse proved himself and got the girl. It was not the horses her father wanted, but he wanted a son who was a real man and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 52. The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Analysis In the story "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" by Sherman Alexie, points out the hardships of being a Native American back in the 20th century. These hardships were racism, alcoholism, poverty and isolation. The story takes place in the reservation and it is about a young Native American whom struggles in society because of his skin color, family's addictions and fights. The narrator moves to Seattle with his white girlfriend who he seems to have an odd relationship because they are constantly fighting. He becomes an alcoholic and moves back to the reservation after a break up with his girlfriend. The story begins with the narrator who enters a 7–11 store at three in the morning to be exact. The cashier looks at him in a frightened way as if he was a criminal and becomes aware of every action that he does in the store. Of course, this is something that still goes on today, specially at 7–11 stores and I once experienced it. The cashier acted in a racist manner because he judges the guy due to his dark skin color and thought he was a robber. Although the narrator did understand the reason why the cashier behaved that way as he once worked in a 7– 11 store and was robbed. The narrator started fooling around with the cashier by making him more frightened, but the cashier noticed that he wasn't a bad guy and offered him the Creamsicle for free. "Often, it's not about becoming a new person, but becoming the person you were meant to be, and already are, but don't know how to be." An Education directed by Lone Scherfig is a film about coming of age and discovering whom we are. The film is set in the early 1960's a time ruled by moral code and strong feminist rules. Jenny is the main character who is 16 and aspiring to read English at Oxford. She soon meets playboy David, who seduces her and they fall in love. In order to market herself as a valuable candidate, Jenny must ace English, Latin, French (hence the title), and show cultural breadth (her "hobby" is the cello). Yet, if all goes according to plan, Jenny will meet a similarly cultured wealthy man and will no longer need to do any of those things. The irony, of course, is that an Oxford education is simply a means of making the bait more alluring. Jenny comes to this realisation early into Scherfig's film and asks the question "Why must I attend Oxford when I could easily take a shortcut and reach the same inevitable conclusion by attending the school of life? I'd have a lot more fun." David is a shortcut past Oxford and is also a lot more entertaining and fun. Jenny must open her mind up to the possibilities that Oxford and an education can grant her. She must again keep her mind open; sometimes the path that is not as clear is often the better choice. As the viewer we want Jenny to go to Oxford and we can see how her decision will make a last imprint on her. We want her to attend and it makes us reflect on all those important decisions we have all had to make in our lives. The final ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The brief conclusions all serve to indicate cold, harsh, and impactful conclusions to his yearly cycle which further emphasize the schism between school years. Some of the conclusions serve different functions, though. For example, when he ends his third grade segment with "I'm still waiting." it is short and impactful; but, when he ends the fifth grade segment with a rhetorical question "Oh, do you remember those sweet, almost innocent choices that the Indian boys were forced to make?" the segment seems to linger on for a moment longer, portraying that the event had a stronger impression than the previous, shorter conclusion. 3. The thematic transition in the seventh grade segment occurs when he kisses the white girl, and almost as if he betrays his tribe, is sent away to a farm town. Through the seventh grade transition, the theme transcends from social outcast and discrimination to somewhat unconscious discrimination but social acceptance. Prior to the seventh grade segment, he is explicitly mistreated and bullied, alienated from society. After the seventh grade though, at the farm town, he doesn't display any direct discrimination, everything he relates and portrays as discrimination is completely indirect and taken as such. 4. • 60. Analysis Of Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven In a world where assimilation is the easiest way to survive, it can be difficult to maintain two identities. The development of characters is the foundation in which people use to grow and become successful in their path of life. Oppression, cultural changes, and pressure to conform to the stereotypical image of success causes discontent among cultures. Many children have an ideal image of who they want to be, and often their parents have a conflicting view on who they would like to see their child become. In the story "Two Kinds" the Narrator has a rebellious attitude towards the aspirations of her mother. The amount of pressure placed on her and her lack of success causes sadness in the main character since she was not able to perform the way her mother wanted. Similarly, the main character from "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" experiences a feeling of inferiority from the racial discrimination and lack of financial success in his life. In the story "Two Kinds" the Narrator does not want to become the prodigy her mother wishes her to be. The idea of becoming a famous actor or musician, like Shirly Temple, was a noble idea from her mother since she only wanted to see her daughter succeed. The pressure she placed on her daughter to follow her orders and be obedient, however, was not in the likeness of the daughter's interests. This example is evident when the author's mother states "[There are] Only two kinds of daughters, she shouted in Chinese. Those who are obedient and those who follow their mind! Only one kind of daughter can live in this house." (Tan 242) The fight that occurs between the narrator and her mother causes a sudden shift in tone, which indicates that the mother no longer held the same high Johnson 2 expectation from her daughter. • 64. The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven Essay Sherman Alexie's book, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, focuses on life in Indian reservations and modern problems that Native Americans still face today. Through the characters that Alexie creates the reader sees how poorly the Native American communities are facing today and how Native Americans are trapped no matter where they go. One of the literary theories that allow us, as readers, to see how these problems arise is Postcolonialism. Postcolonialism is a literary theory that focuses on the impact that colonization had on native inhabitants and how that still changes their lives today. Alexie is very critical of how white colonist came and took the land of the Native Americans and destroyed their way of life forever. Over the past 100s of years America has changed dramatically, and with that, the people have changed. What is considered mainstream now is different from 10, 20, 30, even 100s of years ago. Eventually everything evolves. Sherman Alexie's short story "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" tells the story of a Native American living in current day America. They are very rarely seen in society and they mostly live in their reserves. Another similarity between the two is that the rhinoceros also only live in the reserves and national parks. This means that like the Native Americans, they won't be seen wandering the streets and the wild. Clearly, the author adding in the idea of a rhinoceros in the spelling bee was symbolic to represent how people view Native Americans and how they feel about society. In addition to the idea of the rhinoceros, the idea that the narrator's family had no faith in him that he could succeed in the mainstream American society shows the fraught relationship between the two. What happen in the story was the narrator, a Native American man, who left his reservation to go experience life in Seattle, an American City. The author writes "When I got back to the reservation, my family wasn't surprise to see me. They'd been expecting me back since the day I left for Seattle" (Alexie 83). The fact that his family was not surprised to see him shows that his family had no belief in him to be successful. They knew that the way American society was, that a man who has been living in the reservation for his whole life could not make it in the outside world. Families are supposed to be the biggest supporters of each other's dreams and aspiration. When families know that you are going to fail, it is a good sign that failure will occur. Never had I come across a challenge that frightened me so much. As easy as this sounds, speaking to other people was difficult for me, but speaking publicly felt impossible. I had never been use to talking to others, even when I was a kid. Growing up, I did not interact with many other humans, with the exception of close family members. Many summers were spent isolated, with the only form of recreation being television, my father's books that he would assign me to read everyday, and video games. I can recall most days being spent at home, with the exception of sundays, where I'd finally leave my home for church. Church was no different either, because the only people who attended church were my close family. I was alone, and was separated from the rest of the world. The thought of riding bikes with friends, having sleep overs, or playing tag with other kids was bizarre to me. Not having any kind of experience with others, caused me not to be able to comprehend how humans socialize and act. Therefore, I did not want to learn. Sherman Alexie 's The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight Sherman Alexie's The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven is a collection of short stories about the lives of the people who live on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The central protagonist of the story is Victor Joseph who we see in many short stories and thus see the plight Native Americans go through in modern day America. The novel shows us the many trials that the people of the Reservation go through and addresses the many serious problems that modern Native Americans face, such as racism, alcoholism, poverty, limited educational opportunities, and being geographical isolated. Ultimately the state of affairs that the modern Native American race goes through stems from the historical events of European colonialism as well as modern day popular culture. One of the major problems that modern Native Americans face are the Americanization or "white washing" of their culture. This is caused by technology as well as the isolation of the reservation compared to the outside world. "Still, Indians have a way of surviving. But it's almost like Indians can easily survive the big stuff. Mass murder, loss of language and land rights. It's the small things that hurt the most. Some may be self inflicted, while others are just the cards that were dealt to them. Sherman Alexie's story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven tells of the cards that were given to people on a reservation. This compilation of stories was the framework for Smoke Signals, which won two awards at Sundance Film Festivals. Alexie has also written other novels and poems in regard to the Native American culture. The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven was an interesting read to say the least. It tells of the alcoholism, crime, relationships, and traditions of both the present and past residents of the reservation, as well as their ancestors before the reservation was in place. Overall this book is a representation of Native American lives both on and off of the reservation, with interaction with the white people and the governing forces of the reservation. I was looking forward to seeing if this collection of stories could change the way I picture reservations. I have viewed the outskirts of a few and they did not leave a good image. In no other country is individualism as fetishized and reified into the national identity. The subtext of the American Dream is a story of one person pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. The measure of one's success is calculated by the difference between the start and end points. Ultimately, the necessity of individual accomplishment undercuts cooperation and nonviolent success. This lack of empathy could easily have manifested itself in acts of physical violence, as one–in–five prison inmates are sociopaths as well. In a society that defines business interaction as simulated war, can we be surprised when we fill our businesses with people who advance their self–interest? The system is not inherently designed to reward violence, but the trend towards competition compounds on itself due to humanity's intense grudge memory. In general, because of the extreme rewards for competition, it will be hard to turn the opposite direction through merely bringing the point of male violence to light. The ultimate issue with Wrangham's proposal has nothing to do with the validity of his scientific research, but with the basic value of introducing his ideas into our society at all. As a general rule, public understanding of science is a societal benefit. That being said, introduction of certain ideas can be dangerous when facts are misinterpreted. In the case of Demonic Males, there is a fine line between accepting the genetic roots of violence and constraining the existence of free will. The more emphasis that is placed on the instinct and evolutionary benefits of violence, the easier it is for perpetrators of violence to disown their actions. The setting itself is rather strange for casual readers as it opens up a new perspective to the idea of a world being in turmoil.
