Personal Narrative : The School Day
The school day was finally over. This was a particularly special day for me. Nothing special was
happening but it was Friday and I couldn't wait to get home. I was leaving Spanish class and had to
walk the whole length of the school building to get to the bus. I was concentrating on walking as fast
and steady as possible without falling. I heard one of the bus' engine go off. I panicked and ran. My
concentration had left the steadiness of my steps and had directed itself to the speed of my steps.
When I got to the bus I felt a sudden sense of relief. I sat down on seat 16 like I'm accustomed to
and plugged in my earbuds. I had slept seven hours that night. Needless to say, I was exhausted. I
rested my head on a sweater I had in my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I heard quick, light footsteps come down the stairs. Just as I thought things couldn't get any worse
they did. "WHAT?!!" My neighbor came out. I guess she thought I was smashing on her door. She
turned to me and gave quick smile, then threw the door closed. I gently shook my head and rung the
doorbell for three quick bursts. I heard steps again. They were slightly slower and more clumsy than
the ones before. My mom opened the door and gave me a dry smile. "Hi, mom?" I asked. "How was
school?". She actually answered my question with another question. I decided to be more specific.
"Are you ok?". She shook her head. "What happened?" "The turtle died honey." Her eyes started to
become a slight red color. Tortoise, I thought. I always had to correct her. It seemed like the tortoise
had been there forever. In my subconscious, I thought the tortoise would never die, even though I
can't prevent the inevitable. And again, just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, they did.
"Come here," she said with a slight tremble in her voice. I followed her to my living room. It was
seven steps and took no more than a second to get there, but to me, it felt like a walk in the desert.
Somehow I knew what was coming. What was waiting for me? My mind was holding back, making
it seem like an eternity so that I wouldn't have to witness the horror that was waiting for me in the
other room. I saw the terrarium where the family tortoise spent most of its life. I

Vollmann Poor People
Nelson Mandela once said, "Poverty is not natural it 's man–made." This quote states that a person
can overcome poverty if one has the desire to live a better life. In a novel called Poor People written
by William T. Vollmann, the author travels around different countries and places to learn about poor
people and to get a global perspective view. While interviewing different kinds of people, Vollmann
would ask them one question: why are you poor? Looking at people 's answers Vollmann noticed
that some of the people gave quite interesting answers. Vollmann went through a lot of situations
where he just couldn 't imagine what life would be if he was ever to live like that. Another novel that
has a similar poverty situation is called Let The Water Hold Me Down, written by Michael
Spurgeon. Hank, the main character of the novel, experiences a tragic moment in his life. Losing his
wife and daughter while drowning, this tragedy left him feeling like it's all due to his miscarrying
about them. His life becomes full of sorrow, and the only way out it was to go to Mexico to his
friend's place and restart his life over. In a new country of Mexico, this story takes place. Even
though he had money, a house, and friends' support, he still experienced lots of pressure trying to
survive in Mexico. Poverty has different meanings in everyone 's lives but by reading these two
novels, there are three similarities that can be made about people living in poverty.
When traveling to different

Why I Didn 't Kill You?
They say god gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers and what doesn't kill you only
makes you stronger. People have always said you're so brave and fearless, but they don 't know I've
felt more pain than some people will in an entire lifetime and all before being old enough to order
myself a drink. I never learned how to channel my pain, I let it grow within me like a tumor killing
me a little day by day. My parents sent me to the best psychiatrists money could buy but when they
asked me, "what causes this pain" and then I'd obliterate any success we had made in that session by
simplest of actions, walking out. I couldn't do it, I couldn't tell them why because if I did I would be
admitting to murder.

He did it beautifully, like a sunrise, but even the most romantic people have accepted that too much
sun only brings rain. Adam Cole was the most unexpected blessing I could have imagined or ever
hoped for. Our love story was far from ordinary, it wasn't the type of love you write songs about, it's
the one that grabs you, leaves you breathless and makes you feel like you're on fire. It took one Lupe
Fiasco concert, one glance, one smile, one kiss, and one night to start the most amazing chapter of
the Aliyah Jordan book.
Our love of music had brought us together and it was what kept our little universe functioning
without a star out–of–place. Every other Wednesday night we spent the evening at my parents
house, and every time it was perfect. My childhood home had always smelt like roses and coffee.
Two of my favorite things. Every Wednesday was just as amazing as the last, but there was one
exception. Adam had decided to shake up our usual dinner and movie routine by suggesting it was
time we go camping and I remember my dad laughing,
"Son we Jordan's are good at 3 things, basketball, cooking, and being inside only people, just look at
Aliyah here!"
I remember laughing till my stomach hurt, but Adam was everything but amused.
"Alright, Jordan's if you won't go to nature, I'll bring nature to you."
He worked on that bonfire for a solid hour before letting us come outside to see it. I had to admit, it
felt good sitting around the fire watching the sunset

The Characteristics Of Raskolyevsky's Duality Vs. Dostoevsky
One of the most peculiar traits about Raskolnikov is that despite him murdering two people, he still
has moments during the novel when he helps others. One would not expect generosity to be present
in a man with a superiority complex, yet at times he can be found donating the last of his kopecks
even when, he himself, desperately needs them. At times, this duality can be confusing to the reader
because it seems as if there are two Raskolnikov's. Which one then, is the true Raskolnikov? Despite
Raskolnikov's attempt to set himself above the common man, he cannot deny his true nature, as
shown when he saves a young girl from the malicious intentions of an older man. Before his
interactions with the young girl, the reader sees Raskolnikov acting in a selfish manner. After
reading his mother's letter Raskolnikov stating that Dunya is to marry a wealthy older man he
thinks, "how can she not sacrifice even such a daughter for the sake of such first born son! Oh, dear
and unjust hearts" (Dostoevsky 44)! Egocentrically, he incorrectly assumes that the decisions his
family has made are entirely for his benefit. As a "superior man", Raskolnikov does not need
anyone's help at this point in his life. He is a man who is willing to kill for the sake of an idea.
Further, he thinks he should be the one making decisions. Raskolnikov firmly states that "it won't
happen as long as I live, it won't, it won't! I don't accept it" (Dostoevsky 44). Yet, by trying to
control his family, it reveals how desperate he is to have order in his own life. Raskolnikov's life is
falling apart, he has no job, owes money to his landlady, and (suffers from?) crippling anxiety. He
uses his superior mindset as a coping mechanism to avoid addressing the problems that are plaguing
his life. He does not have to take responsibility for them because he believes that his word is above
the law. Therefore, his sister has to reject this marriage from Luzhin in his mind, showing the reader
just how bad of a rut he is in life. This man is at his lowest point in life but he will not accept help
from those that truly care about him. In his mind, control is the ultimate goal for him... yet, despite
his selfish thoughts and controlling nature, he is involuntarily

Personal Narrative: Riding A Bike Without Training Wheels
I was screaming with happiness inside, I knew that I was finally going to ride a bike without training
wheels. I asked my dad if I could learn to ride my bike without training wheels.
"Yes" my dad replied inside my brightly light house.
So we got out my pads and my bike. I put the pads on by pulling them up my legs to my knees,
pulling the pads to my elbows on my arms, and clipping the helmet together. My dad took off the
training wheels with his tools, so I could start practicing. I was thinking and then realized, that I
would finally be able to ride with my friends and family without training wheels.
Now that my training wheels are off, I asked my dad where we should practice. My dad said that we

riding my bike. He held my sides as I rode and I didn't fall, and again let go, but this time when I
zoomed back to my house I stopped I didn't fall. I was leaping around with energy and happiness
running through my entire body.
I finally learned to ride. I got on my bike and started to ride, I was the happiest person alive.
I yelled to my mom "Hey mom get out here I want to show you that I can ride a bike."
My mom came out watched me ride my bike. I zoomed down the driveway and onto the sidewalk. I
thought that I was going to spin out at the turn, but luckily I didn't I had no problems. I peddled very
hard and fast so my mom could see that I could ride fast, and also because I figured if I go fast I will
have a better balance. I turned around at the corner of the street and then came back and stopped at
my house, it was the greatest feeling moment of my life. It started to get dark so I went inside sad

Azazel Character Analysis
Ch.1
In a small village, far far way from here, there is a little girl named Azazel who is going through the
worst hair day you could ever imagine. As she brushes and brushes her hair, more and more gets
caught and tangled in her brush. So she flings it out her window in anger.
"Azazel, your mother grows weaker by the day, come say goodbye for I fear this is the end."
Her father says as he walks into the room and stands behind her
"Yikes. That's some head of hair you have there, you had better fix that before you go outside."
He continued as Azazel continued to fiddle with the tangle of hair on her cowlicked head. She goes
to visit her mother down the hall for what is supposedly the final time. Ch.2
Azazel's mother lays in her sick bed, dying from makeup poisoning. Azazel rushed to her mother
side. When her mother spotted the mess of her child her eyes widened in surprise,
"My child, my dear precious Azazel. You're such a mess. I have something that will help you, oh
dear... but it will be quite a quest."
The mother states wearily,
"Oh please mommy I'll do anything to look better on your last look of me."
Azazel exclaims excitedly at the prospect of taming her hair for her mother's final breath.
"Very well, you need to find the diamond hair tie, the silver hair spray, and the golden bobby pins.
Find the wise woman in the forest of fears to get the bobby pins, she will tell you where to go next."
As the mother spoke she became more and more tired,
"Now go, go before I fall

Reflection Paper
When taking this course at first I was very hesitant on continuing with it because it went against
everything I knew growing up in my home. I'm very glad I continued the course because it has
offered me so much in opening my eyes on how life is for people who are women, different race,
their sexual orientation, gender, and disabled. I never really realized how much I was limited too
growing up as a girl, I was expected to be dolce, pretty and quiet. While boys were expected to do
about whatever they wanted, they could get dirty, be loud, and cause a ruckus. I experienced this as
a kid; my brother wouldn't get in trouble for doing certain things. If I tried to do what my brother
did, I would get in trouble and be told, "A young lady shouldn't be doing that". It irritated me so
much because I didn't know why my brother could get away with certain actions and I wasn't.
We talked about white privilege and how it's a thing, we can't ignore it, however when I went to
school in Germany I experienced the exact opposite. People who were African American, Asian, and
Hispanic were the top of the food chain, to say, at my high school, they were popular and everyone
looked up to them because they were the best at all the sports at my high school. I only understood
white privilege when I moved to Wyoming funny enough; I went from a highly diverse upbringing
growing up in the military, to pretty much a white–based town of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Not that
there was anything wrong with that,

Description Of ' Zehaf Bibeau '
ZEHAF–BIBEAU
I'm so powerful. So powerful. This gun, it's great. And the Government, I hate them! They shall die!
This officer behind me, he shall never catch me. The dirt on the sidewalk, thrown off of the sides.
Like the Government! They shall be thrown, by me. That fence, i'll avoid it. The officer, he's trying
to cut me off! Around the corner. Yes, yes! There's the entrance. The soldiers, they'll catch me! Lift
the gun, i'm so close! That soldier! He's in the way, move, move! The man behind you, that's who I
want! The Governor! I want him! Dead! Move, move! I'll shoot over him! My gun, it's up, ,I shoot, I
miss. I missed! No! I missed... I missed... But the soldiers dead.
CIRILLO
"The laws are important. We must stick to them!" Objects an official. The debate continues. No
smiling. Even if I did, there's nothing to smile about. I wait patiently for an hour, listening in on the
argument, watching the door. Cars quietly pass by. Birds peacefully flying in a V shape. Like
soldiers. Well, if you think about it. Lined up, so... nicely. Distant shouts fill the silent air. The
debate continues while my hand goes on my gun. "What is it Cirillo?" asks the soldier next to me. I
ignore him and raise my gun. Fast footsteps get closer, and closer. Before I knew it, a man appears at
the door and the room is filled with gunshots. Pain and then light. I open my eyes to see myself
lifted. I stare in horror at my dead, limp body on the floor.

A Report On The World 's Prisoner Suit
Barely moments later, the speedster flashed in his prisoner suit in the lab, or at least what used to be
S.T.A.R. Labs. Like the rest of the city, it was barely a shell of what it used to be. While the building
was thankfully still standing, it hadn 't been used as a base of operation for a very, very long time.
This much was clear. There was dust everywhere on the ground and every equipment or window he
could found were broken, pieces laying on the ground all around. ' 'No, no....what happened here? ' '
Was anyone left even alive? Despite the elevator being out of service, no real surprise there, Barry
managed to make his way into the cortex using the stairs, only to find everything in pretty much the
same mess than the rest of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dusting off his finding, Barry found himself holding an old and damaged newspaper, yellowed by
time a long time ago, making it hard to decrypt anything other than the title: ' 'City still reco..ring
from t...aliens attac...: evacuation ...t...rdered ' '
It was dated from March 2019, over 2 years after the attack. What was the date now? How long has
he slept? Everything was clear; he failed them all, each and every person he cared about, he left
them all to die when he gave himself up for nothing. Step sounds coming from the hallway made
him sharply turn around and rise on his feet in an instant. Who could it be in this ghost town?
When the figure, a woman dressed in black with an eye patch on her left eye, entered the cortex and
came into view, Barry gasped at the sight; he knew who it was despite the noticeable differences. '
'Caitlin. ' ' He whispered in shock.
His old friend looked definitely rougher as her now short hair were barely touching her shoulders
and her face, the only unhidden part of her face, was covered in scars and she was holding an odd
looking assault weapon directed at the speedster. As she intensively stared at the person standing,
she presented no sign of softening, or even no sign of recognition. ' 'What are you doing here? ' ' She
harshly inquired. ' 'Cait, it's me. ' ' Said Barry, softly, getting closer. ' 'You're supposed to be dead. ' '
Oh well, at least she

Characters In William Armstrong's The Scarlet Ibis
Have you ever read about two characters that have so many things in common? Well, in "The
Scarlet Ibis", the main character William Armstrong shares many similarities with the beautiful red
bird that is found limp in a tree outside of the family's house. Early in the book, we find out that the
main character, known as Doodle, had many complications at birth, which lead to the severe health
problems he now has to face throughout his childhood. These problems were the reasons why
Doodle was not normal like the kids around him. Walking, swimming, running, and playing outside
were all things that Doodle had trouble partaking in. We are introduced to the Scarlet Ibis in the
middle of the book in a depressing, yet beautiful way. When we meet the bird, it is lying in a tree,
weak and frail. Quickly, we find a similarity that the two characters share. Doodle and the Ibis both
have something pushing them until they die. For instance, Doodles brother was non stop pushing
him to be better and better each day. "He collapsed onto the grass like a half–empty flour sack. It
was as if he had no bones in his little legs. "Don't hurt me, Brother, he warned" (Hurst 467). As you
can see, Doodle is forced daily to try to stand on his own, in the field near their house, which is not
healthy for him. Knowing that Doodle has internal problems, you would have thought that his
brother would not have pushed him so hard. Why would his brother be pushing him when he has so
many problems, you may ask.

What Makes The Lord Of The Rings Or The Hobbit So Popular?
What does every good movie or book have in it? What made The Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit so
popular? What gave it the sense of awe? For me it was the sense of adventure, and I bet that is what
it was for you too. An ordinary hobbit, nothing different or exciting about him, was suddenly thrust
into the middle of a grand adventure. Adventure: it is what some people, including me, live for; not
the generic fly here, buy our hotel package, experience controlled danger type of adventure. A real
genuine adventure; one that is unexpected, spontaneous, taken with loved ones, out of the ordinary,
something that maybe other people wouldn't consider and adventure. That is a real adventure.

Once we hit Cedar Vale we turned down dirt roads and before us lay what we had been anticipating
for months. Before us lay a 3000 acer ranch. Complete with four–wheelers, jeeps, a lake, a big
cabin, and all the airsoft guns we could want.
When we got out we hit the ground running. We divided into teams and grabbed our airsoft guns.
We took a short ride up to massive dirt patch. It was probably a good acer of flat loose dirt. So we
did what any responsible guys would do. We did donuts. We drifted the hell out of the jeep (which I
was driving) and the rangers. Every time going a little faster and taking a little sharper turns. That is,
until one of my friends, Tyler, flipped a ranger.
One of my friends was ejected from the vehicle and the other one (Tyler) rolled with it (both were
uninjured). Amazingly the ranger was perfectly fine so we all lifted it back right side up and
Braydon's dad (who owned the ranch and all of the stuff) never found out. We had so much driving
to and in the dirt field, we never actually played airsoft that day.
Later that night we went out about a half mile into the ranch and set up tents by a creek. Once we
had all of our tents set up around a big fire, we just camped out. We talked, made fun of each other,
burned stuff, and made s'mores; we were just having a great time. Until Braydon's dad decided to
scare us with mountain lion and coyote calls.

Lost And Gained : Depression And Anxiety
Lost and Gained
I was thirteen when I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. The diagnosis did not come to me
as a surprise; it was expected. I got my diagnosis behind my parents back. Thirteen, the legal age
that I can go to the doctor's office without a parent if I wanted. I never told them. They wouldn't
understand, they never really did. The main cause of my mental illness was not being good enough.
Having an older sister who was good at everything was hard to deal with. She excelled in
academics, she held leadership roles in many clubs or organizations, and she was 'the perfect
daughter.' My parents sometimes unknowingly compared me to my older sister. I was always one
step below her. I got lower grades, less medals, and struggled in the things she always excelled at.
What was worse was that I grew up in a very stereotypical Asian family. Getting anything below an
'A' was considered failure. I was expected to be the best at everything I put my hands on. I can
clearly remember in 5th grade when I handed my mom a test we had taken in class. The bright red
letters on the top of the test marked '112%.' It was a math pre–test we took earlier that week. I was
able to get more than full points on material we had not yet learned, but I didn't receive much of a
response. I then asked why she never complimented me if I had done well. Her answer was "这是应
该的," which roughly translates to "this is expected." As a 5th grader I just accepted this response
and repeated it to

tripping over the rubble caused by people and storms over the years. While Marie was tripping over
the rubble, she heard a horrible screeching noise. She was already scared enough before that noise
came. Marie covered her ears while that noise went on and on. She decided to go towards the noise.

Marie was scared but brave as she felt around for a hole in the wall or a door. Marie felt something

a stuffed bear. She didn't notice it before, when she had light and then lost it. It's not that easy to
miss something as big as the bear.
She looked around and saw the door. She ran out of the door and ran into more rubble that wasn't
there before. Marie kept on tripping and stumbling over every piece of rubble. She stubbed her toe
on a step. She knew that there were steps in Lidtke Mill, but she just didn't know where and now she
found them. Little Marie ran up them as fast as she could, skipping steps along the way. It was a
little bit lighter up in the attic because of the small square window. She liked it up there much better
even though it wasn't any safer. First off, the thing that is chasing her could still be up there and
second, the building is falling apart piece by piece. As she started to walk, the wood creaked and
splinters of wood started to fall from the ceiling. She walked a little faster, but calmer this time. She
heard noises from the other side of the room. She hid in and out of the junk that was piled up in the
attic of the old Lidtke Mill. Marie

If there was the flimsiest chance of me getting out of New Orleans alive, it was every bit as urgent
that I took full advantage of it without any signs of deferring. I thank God that my wife understood
the degree to which my life was declining because unbeknownst to me, I had been thrust into this
shifting psychotic state which was too entangled for me to discern. I continued having a few unclear
memories about some of the alleged acts that led up to our departure. As for the ones I'm unable to
recall, many of them were labeled as pure hideous while others were considered even more
disturbing. Honestly speaking, I'm actually grateful to be unable to recall the majority of my past. I
am, however, every bit apologetic for it, and even more so remorseful for hurting the many people I

Descriptive Essay About My Dream Place
Standing in awe, I review the instructions on the paper ticket I hold in my hand: "1: Close your eyes.
2: Picture your dream place to visit. 3: Insert this ticket into the ticket feeder." Following the
instructions, my eyes close as I take a deep breath. What the one place I dream greatest about? I
could travel anywhere; there are so numerous places I had dreamed of visiting. Shifting through my
thoughts, I accordingly choose somewhere I have imagined for the longest time. I heavily exhale,
opening my eyes as my ticket gets pulled into the feeder.
Impatience and excitement are overcoming in the silence as I wait. Suddenly a door appears and
swings open. As I step through the doorway into a blinding light, I almost lose my breath. A
peaceful scenery of valleys and flowers appears. Walking down a rubble path in awe of the beautiful
creations, everything prevails more breathtaking than I ever imagined. A path leads into an alluring
forest as trees cascade over like a giant archway. A stream runs along the left side of the path and
animals are not as frightful here as what I had known them to be before.
As I reach the end of the forest trail, laughter and music becomes louder; it is a town. Filled with
hope, I begin thinking maybe I will see people I once knew. Skipping down the trail a little faster, I
approach a heavy wall that separates the forest and the town. Only a few people notice a new
presence at first as I pull a gate open and step through. Giggles burst from a

Personal Narrative-It's Impose Time
Valentine did make it to work on time, and was busy shelving records when her boss walked in.
"Valentine, I need you to re–organize the Pop section when you're done with those. Some high
schoolers were in here yesterday, and messed everything up." he said. He was being grumbly, which
was never good. He had a slight disdain for high schoolers, as well as loud parties and royal icing.
"Can do Neil." she said, using the wrong name to try and irritate him further. "Thanks Hero." Niall
said. She flinched a little, knowing the feeling all to well. It was like being kicked in the stomach,

She organized, and re–organized after every customer. When her lunch break rolled around, she
stayed and organized again. Niall had to practically kick her out at closing time.
She loved the record store. It was her own personal paradise. The whole building was medium sized,
all the records and CD's divide perfectly. Red clearance bins lined one wall. It was her happy place.
Niall had given her as many hours of work as he could, but even on her days off, she showed up and
just hung out with the rest of the staff. She was constantly recommending new music to people,
ranging from BMTH to Bruno Mars.
Now she was in the coffee shop again, watching the purple sky flow to black, and sipping hot
chocolate. When there was nothing else to see out the window, she looked at the door and watched
as people came and went. The bell at the top of the door rang, a que for her eyes to follow the
stranger.
Ugh.
It was the guy who spilled tea down her chest earlier. He had long, dark, curly hair, and it was pulled

eyes and baby face. She looked down. Something about the former's eyes made her uncomfortable.

The Icy Journey In the bitter cold of Canada's winter, my father and I traveled through the woods on
a task. This Christmas our task was to put a little change in the world, so we made supply bags to
give to the needy. These bags comprised of blankets, canned food, water, and an inflatable pillow.
My father woke me up before dawn to start the trip to the town. This trip took ½ a day on a cart
behind a horse, but since the snow fell early it would take us twice as much time. We followed the
elongated dirt road deep into the night. Here we came upon our first trial. It was our horse. He
started to huff and puff, but he couldn't be tired because we just took a break 2 minutes ago. We

Bad Role Models
Police data published by Daily Mail on the Internet, provides evidence suggesting that one crime is
committed every five seconds in the United States of America. Resulting in seventeen thousand two
hundred eight crimes per day. This shocking number evidently demonstrates that on average too
many crimes are committed everyday, and while this data is a reliable source that can be relied on to
give people an idea of how many crimes are committed everyday on average; it fails in informing us
on the reasons or in what situation the criminals were in to have to be in a position to break the law.

I believe that people who have necessities in life have no choice than to do anything to no longer
have those necessities. Many people grow up not having anything going towards their way say they
end up getting involved in gangs, and doing bad things breaking the law everyday. But what
happens when you are the head of the family and you're not putting food on the table and the only
way out of that is by selling drugs? Everyone generally assumes that people in jail, or prison had
something to do with drugs. I'm not saying that everyone is in a correctional facility because of
drugs, but a big percentage of the people in jail in ghetto places are because of drugs, and why is
that? Because drugs are the easiest way of getting out of being poor, or at least that what people who
sell them think. When a teenager is arrested because of possession of drugs in a ghetto town, it's not
very alarming because we all expect that to happen, but what happens when a middle age white man
who has never had any problems with the law is arrested for the same reason? That's when we start
asking questions and learn the truth of why people act in such ways. The person known as the head
of the family is usually always thought to be the leader of the family. The leader of the family has
responsibilities, and one of them is to provide for the family, and to protect them. Many family

The Slice Of A Knife
The Slice of a Knife He didn't look that dead. Apart from the river of blood rushing out the gaping
neck wound, he looked pretty much the same as he did a few minutes before. His hand was still
clasped around his bottle of beer and face was still frozen in a permanent gaze of boredom. The only
thing different about James's face was the single tear that rolled down his cheek and hung on the
cliff of his chin amongst his stubble. As it fell from his face, his body smashed forward into the
wooden table. And in that moment I felt completely alone. James was the only reason I was there
with the oudious group of so–called 'friends'. Only a few moments before we had been having a
wonderful time, drinking wine out of chipped coffee mugs and reminiscing about 'the good old
days'. Then in a beat of a heart, the lights gave out. Exploded glass cascaded from the ceiling and the
sudden fright caused everyone to panic. There were a few minutes of clattering in the murky
darkness before Bill switched his massive solar–powered lamp he (ever so conveniently) had with

powered one. He had also carried an excessive amount of electronic devices that he immediately
proceeded to plug in as soon as he got the chance, perhaps thats why the power gave out. James was
murdered in that dark but did Bill have reason to see James dead? With James out of the way he

take place for Tulane University's class of 2009, but Ellen DeGeneres was there to congratulate
them as well! This class was dubbed the "Katrina Class" for being survivors of the devastating
Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Katrina was named one of the deadliest Hurricanes, causing more than

Most graduates have a lot of stress and worry about their futures, the uncertainty of where they are
going or what they will become. Ellen is relatable when she tells the graduates how she didn't know
who shes was, considering that, she was still dating men. Another use of a rhetorical question "But
why am I here today?" to introduce an anecdote about her growing up in New Orleans. This
question takes the audience's attention back to her, because, consequently, they know that Ellen will
explain why she is there; giving them a reason to listen to her words. Once again, Ellen asks "What
else can happen to you?" in order to commend the graduates of having success after the tragedy of
Hurricane Katrina. She uses the hyperbole and rhetorical question, "So what I'm saying is, when
you're older, a lot of you will be gay. Anyone writing this stuff down? Parents?" this keeps
everybody's attention and loops the parents into relating the commencement speech to them as well.
Rhetorical questions help Ellen by giving the crowd small moments to reflect and invites them into
her speech, connecting to them and allowing them to smile during serious content.
Furthermore, the use of hyperbole and metaphors are effective in this commencement speech. Ellen
uses a hyperbole when she rationalizes her anxiety about the success of her sitcom after the public
realize that she is gay. Ellen worried about this because in recent times, the

Dr. Bird 's Advice For Sad Poets
Often in a novel the author uses their writings to talk about serious subjects and form a theme that
has an important meaning and message behind it. In the coming of age novels Dr. Bird's Advice for
Sad Poets by Evan Roskos and, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the theme
that you should celebrate everything you are because what you're feeling is valid and shall pass is
common throughout both books.
In Dr. Bird's Advice for Sad Poets the main character, James Whitman is a junior in highschool who
wakes up yawping and quoting Walt Whitman. From the outside he looks like an enigma. He lives
in a small town with his abusive dad who kicked his sister, Jorie, out and, his submissive mother.
James is struggling with severe depression and anxiety. To help cope with what he's feeling, James'
has an imaginary, human size, bird, therapist. Because she's living inside James' head she is only
able to tell James things he already knows but just doesn 't really want to admit. He talks to his
therapist, "Dr. Bird", while he works at a pizza parlor to save up enough money to go to a real
therapist, since he knows his parents won't get him one. Another way James deals with his feeling is
by hugging trees and writing poetry. He begins to help write his school 's literary magazine and
starts to fall in love with head writer, Beth. To make things worse, James continues to blame himself
for his sister's misfortune. James' sister, Jordie, was a senior in highschool when she

Paul's Case Essay
Paul's Case
Paul was a self–oriented boy, concerned with money, wealth, and glamour, raised in a Calvinist
household that supported these ideals. Through my research I have decided that Paul's eventual fate
was not any one person's fault. Paul was just as much to blame as his father and teachers for Paul's
suicide.
Paul was never content with his house on Cordelia Street and was always dreaming about "movin'
on up" while he worked at Carnegie Hall and watched the actors and actresses move about in their
stately attire and live in the most luxurious of hotel suites. Because of this dream to get out of the
area in which he lived, Paul hardly ever got along with his teachers and his father. The thought of
taking full advantage of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul's only chance, it seemed was to steal the money he needed and live off of it for as long as he
could.
Paul stole more than $1000, enough to live for a month in New York City, at the time of the story,
and only if spent cautiously. But, no... Paul would have none of that. It would have been a waste to
have more money than he had ever seen in his life, and yet live just as he had throughout his life. He
wanted to live in style, the way the rich folks did. So, Paul spent the money within a week on all the
best clothes, the best food, the best hotel room, the best flowers, and the best life. The money
disappeared within a week and Paul was forced to leave it all behind and return to the dreariness of
middle class existence.
Paul's damaged psyche could not bear to return the living–dead life that he hoped he had left behind
forever, so he removed the living part with the help of a very large, very loud locomotive.
Paul's father had abused him emotionally, and probably physically, throughout Paul's life. He did so
much to Paul's flagging self–image that he had to boast to others to make himself feel big, when he
felt tiny inside. When he finally achieved that "bigness" that he always wanted, the glamour of "the
good life," his father found him out and took that away from him, or rather, made Paul give it up.
This made Paul feel even smaller and made him feel that he would be better off dead. So Paul
decided to make his life "better off" and

Why I Hate Being Complacent Essay
I hate being complacent. I try to fight complacency in all aspects of my life from academics to my
sport of ultimate. Academically, complacency is the difference between putting in the time and effort
to study for a test and shrugging it off with a simple "it'll be fine." Playing ultimate complacency
looks like not doing another set of dead lifts or accepting a poor decision as acceptable just because
it happened to result in a goal because "it'll work itself out." One of my main goals for this school
year is to rid my life of these complacencies. And, honoring this commitment, I have been doing my
work more thoroughly and not just at the last minute and have been pushing myself to become faster
and smarter as an ultimate player. But even with this resolution to be better I am still complacent in
those aspects of my life and will continue to be imperfect as long as I continue to be human. But, as
I have learned throughout my time at Carleton, more specifically this term (and even more
specifically the second half of this term) I am complacent in the way I view justice in this country.
There are powerful forces that shape our criminal justice system that I have always vaguely known
existed and have always vaguely understood that they are inherently and systematically racist. And
even hearing the facts and numbers, my favorite things, on how racist our country is I chose to be
indifferent. I knew that one in three black men will be incarcerated during their life time while

John Marshall Spring Break
During the week of John Marshall's Spring Break, my friend Maddie and I walked around normal
places with high heels. Both of us being quite tall girls without them, I believed that two borderline
six foot girls walking around places like Walmart and the public library would illicit some sort of a
response, although regrettably not as big as some other things one could do. After expressing these
thoughts to her, she responded with, "If people don't look at you because you're tall, they'll look at
you because you're falling." So, on a Wednesday afternoon we both semi dressed up, neither of our

The man in the library felt the need to loudly tell us his opinion on our bodies, and plenty of women,
mostly from the Baby Boomer generation, had the same judgmental look in their eyes as we went
about our shopping. Non–conformity, I think, arises from the clash of generations. To my
grandmother's generation, something that might be normally accepted in that era is being radically
changed in mine. Society's values and strict social rules change with the pass in generations. One
example of this can be seen in birth control; while an uncomfortable and weird taboo topic for my
mum's mother, so much that my mother went out secretly to get her birth control pills, is a totally
normal and okay topic in my day and age, as seen by the fact that my mom is usually the one that
picks up my prescription for me. Teenagers, especially, love to rebel and branch out from the
teachings of their parents, and effectively change what it means to conform by doing so. Another
clash of conforming can be seen by changes in culture. Rochester has the Mayo Clinic systems to
thank for being a mosh pit of many different world cultures all brought together. While some see it
as a disadvantage (cough, our President, cough), I believe it is a good way to fail to conform to
societal norms and bring about much needed

"I suppose," Amaranth says, not really sure where Mother is going at. There is no emotional bond

Success in anything requires more than just luck. It requires practice. I know doing the same thing
over and over can be very annoying, but if you are really determined to be perfect at whatever it is
that you are doing then practice is definitely the way to go. Few years ago, I learned to ride a bike,
all by myself. But it didn't just happen in an hour or two, it took time, and a whole lot of practice. It
happened like this.
Summer had just started. I was laying on the grass in my backyard drinking in the warm sun when

smiled it meant good news is coming. So I smiled back at him.

I walked over to the bike to take a closer look. It was an awesome looking black bike. I guess I
could learn to ride it. I took it outside.
The sun was still shining. I took a deep breath, the air smelled fresh. There was a light, warm wind
blowing. And not one person in sight. I got onto the bike and slowly wobbled down the empty street,
putting my foot on to the ground every time I felt like I was going to fall.
At the end of the street, I turned around and wobbled back up the street. After a few rides like this I
felt like I was getting the hang of it and decided to go a little faster. As I was reaching the end of the
block I heard a car engine behind me. I realized too late that a car had turned onto the street. I got
scared and panicked.
The next thing I know I am falling. The ground is racing up to meet my body, all I am seeing is the
gray concrete, and crash. My eyes cloud up, my vision is blurry and a tear slides down my cheek. I
taste blood, probably from biting my tongue too hard. I blink rapidly and wipe the tears away. The
street is empty again.
I look down at my body and see that my knee and elbow is scraped, but the bike is fine. i decide that
that was enough riding for a day and decide to go home. My mom is wiping down the kitchen
counter when I enter. She sees my scraped knee and elbow and hurries over, with a worried look in
her eyes, and asks me what happened. I tell her everything.

There is never really a definite answer to who really created rock n roll. It wasn't Elvis, and it wasn't
Chuck Berry. Its widely believed that the first rock n roll single was "Rocket 88" by Jackie
Brenston. Most people think that rock n roll started from The Blues, but Larry Birnbaum says that it
comes from Rhythm & Blues. It eventually evolved into the typical rock sounds of the 50s and 60s
that we know, like Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode and Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock. That
eventually led to bands from the 70s and early 80s like The New York Dolls and Led Zeppelin
which were more of Glam Rock. Hair metal was influenced from the glam rock of the 70s. Glam
Rock was basically a step down from Hair Bands. They wore more feminine clothes, like heels and
pantyhose. Hair Bands didn't exactly wear heels and pantyhose, but they adopted the look of
wearing makeup, the strange clothes, and most importantly the hair. Quiet Riots "Metal Health"

Pete's death is a tragic enactment of this metaphor. He was always silently angry, trying to find some
way to rebel against Larry, but "losing himself more and more bitterly in contemplating the target."
(306) It is only by way of metaphorizing the quarry that he can break the surface. Talking about the
waterfilled quarry and throwing stones in, he says: "You hate to see that surface go unbroken."
(249). Then he contemplates the only way out: "Pete stared past me. A breeze had come up,
shattering the surface of the water into shards of light." (251). Later that summer, he takes it: "he

A Survivor's Story: A Narrative Fiction
"Thank God, although I've abandoned her" I said with slight relief along fear.
Negative thoughts rushed my head, but there was nothing I could've done. I walked along the
broken twigs and shrubs to the end of the tree line. Looking at my house gave me relief and
discomfort. But then I noticed something. The blinds in the window had opened up, to which
revealed my sister, Mai. All the burden over my heart had just been lifted upon seeing her face. I
rubbed my eyes, with disbelief, then looked up upon the window. That's when I noticed something
odd. There was a person next to her, she was pointing at something. I couldn't make out the person
but I noticed she was pointing right at me. I took a closer look, that person was me. It was from my

Once our mother saw the two of us leave the forest, she ran right after us. Lifting her off of me, and
crying. Mai woke up and looked toward me and told mom that I had saved her. They both began to
touch me and mom still asking questions.
"Where's your brother, where is he?" mom said while crying and panicking.
Mai didn't reply, she herself did not know what to say. The policeman asked Mai where I had found
her.
"The pond, over there," she said to the officer while pointing to the direction of the pond.
The police rushed through the trees in an effort to find me. But I already knew where I once was. I
looked at my family one last time as I retreated back into the forest, finding a place to rest. I found a
nice bundle of grass and moss the lay down and began to fall asleep thinking I won't wake up.
But to my disbelief, I had awoken to police officers pulling me out of the pond. Scared and finally
relieved to the situation. The police reunited me with my family who were relieved.
"Did you see it? I saw it, Mom did too! It was great big red elk with huge antlers! " she said
describing the deer.
I didn't reply, knowing what had happened, I just held her and my mother. I'm just thankful for
whatever happened. The events didn't make much sense to me but all I know is that i'm glad with the

The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian And Jin...
INTRODUCTION – ~ THESIS – When evaluating Arnold "Junior" Spirit from Sherman Alexie's
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part–Time Indian and Jin Wang from Gene Luen Yang's American
Born Chinese, similarities radiate in both characters as their disparity in race deem the two of them
as outcasts in the entirety of society. In addition to their lack of social interactions, their uniformity
in their impulsive decisions cost them each a dear friend. Although Junior and Jin are quite similar,
they share differences in the way Junior tries bettering himself by fitting into both his Indian and
Reardan culture whereas Jin changes himself in every possible way to become Americanized. ***
The correspondence between Junior and Jin is detected in both ... Show more content on

A world once filled with Asian friends and neighbors crashes harshly as Jin is left stranded in a
white dominated school. Stereotypes and teasing are quickly placed on him from his racial
background. Still new to the area, Jin presumes, "The only other Asian in my class was Suzy
Nakamura. When the class finally figured out that we weren't related, rumors began to circulate that
Suzy and I were arranged to be married on her thirteenth birthday. We avoided each other as much
as possible" (Yang 31). Embarrassment clouds Jin as he realizes that he's not like the other kids in
his class. With distinct features and his native tongue, Jin felt like a reject surrounded by his
Caucasian classmates. He was entirely alone amongst his peers, and he didn't like that one single bit.
In this way, it's clear how both Junior and Jin felt like outcasts in these two oceans of white students
and teachers. *** Acknowledged in both novels, Junior and Jin's spontaneous actions leave them
both friendless and bruised. In Junior's case, this meant ditching the reservation's schooling system
and finding one that surpasses the education he was taught. In the spur of the moment, Junior
decides to do just that and attend an all–white school in the neighboring town. Getting the courage
to tell his best friend, Junior braces himself for Rowdy's reaction. Denial embedded his friend's
senses; remoteness then trickled its way through his head

The Film Baby Face By Lilly
The film Baby face, follows a woman by the name of Lilly Powers, who leaves her dreary small
town in Pennsylvania and heads to New York City in hopes of making something of herself.
Throughout the film, Lilly explores and uses her sexuality to manipulate men and build her way to
the top. Her character faces limitations but succeeds in challenging presumptions of women during
this time period.
The film starts off at Lilly's workplace, a speakeasy that is run by her father. As Lilly moves through
crowds of men, serving them beer, they grab and taunt her but she is more than disinterested. Right
away, the viewer understands that this is not the ideal life Lilly wants to be living, as she gazes
outside a window, on top of plants covered in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If women were to have a job outside of the home, it would most likely be of a domestic or personal
service, which was low pay and involved poor working conditions. Many women during this era
struggled, especially single women who had to fend for themselves and find a decent job just to stay
afloat. Lilly's character seems to ignore this standard and takes after Cragg's advice. We first see
Lilly take action upon Craggs "words of wisdom", while she is on a train to New York. The guard
tries to kick her off but she confidently uses her sexuality to lure the man off into the distance. We
know that her manipulation succeeds because the next scene is of her in New York City. Lilly has
quickly been able to use her power as a woman to get what she wants and it doesn 't end there. She
finds herself at the personnel office, after multiple women before her are seen walking out, rejected,
she continues to ask for a job. Even though she doesn't have any experience or qualifications, she
knows that she can overcome this issue by giving the man what he wants, in a state where he most
vulnerable, sex. Throughout the film, Lilly recognizes the different men that work in the building
and the power and wealth that each obtain;she doesn't waste any time with men of a low status. The
other women in the building seem to catch on to her tricks and lustful ways, one of them even
sarcastically commenting, "Well she works fast." This

Marybeth: A Fictional Narrative
Harry was running the final diagnostic's on the FTL drive, everything was looking good, "Elle, run
your tests on the engines and FTL drive." "I can do that for you right now." "Thank you, Elle. Let
me know the results as soon as you have them." Harry had just gotten that all out and Elle reported
all systems were fine. Harry chuckled, "Thank you, Elle." "Marybeth." Harry said over the
communications system. "She's all yours." "You sure?" "As sure as I can be, go ahead and give it a
shot." "Thanks Harry, sit tight, it'll be a few minutes." Harry took her advice and sat back in his
chair, he was exhausted, and he was asleep within minutes after finally sitting down. On the bridge,

the sick bay to check on Bill, Wallace and Erik. When he walked into sick bay there was almost a
party atmosphere, "What's going on?" Terry asked SSG Bell. "That concoction that Erica brewed up
with the help of Elle is working. It looks like Bill is going to be alright." SSG Bell told him "What
about Wallace and Erik?" Terry inquired about. "Erik is lucky to have a hard head, he's going to be
fine, but have a hell of a headache. As far as Wallace you would need to speak to Dr. Sanders." "Ok,
thanks for the update Staff Sergeant; I'll get with Erica about Wallace." Terry didn't see Erica in sick
bay any place, "Elle, Where's the doctor at?" "She's in the galley." Terry made his way to the galley
and found Erica sitting alone at one of the tables staring into space. He grabbed a cup of orange

Creative Story : A Short Story
It was a dark halloween night. 7 year old Sophie and 13 year old Tommy were just heading home
from trick–or–treat. Their town was a good place to go trick–or–treating. The neighbors always knew
what candy the kids wanted. They remarkably knew what the Robinson family liked. (Sophie and
Tommy) Just as they were heading in the door, Tommy saw something strange across the street. It
was something he had never seen before. He saw his father watching television and he could smell
fresh collard greens, mashed potatoes, and a big juicy steak. All he could think about was eating but
he kept looking over at that house figure. Immediately, he took Sophie in and told his mom he was
going to the Little Quick Market around the corner to get salt and pepper. Of course she said okay.
Tommy slowly walked over toward the house.
The wind was like ghosts singing. The leaves were crumbling like somebody was eating potato
chips. Tommy started to walk a little faster. Then, a little faster. He started to hear screams, really
loud screams. He turned around and ran and ran and ran until he got home. When he barged in his
house his mom had a really confused look on her face. Although it was a confused look it was more
of a "I caught ya" look. She asked why Tom didn't have the salt and pepper in my hand. He made up
some lie and said the road was crossed off. That was the most stupidest excuse ever because for
One, mom had already been in town to get dinner stuff just 1 hour ago. For Two, since Tommy was
walking he could still get to the market. And for Three, his mom had saw him walk over to that
house and then run back. "How about I answer that question", said mom. She went on and on about
how Tom was in so much trouble for going over there. She was booming, and hollering, and
shouting, and yelling. She sent Little Tom to the store again with seven dollars to get some salt and
pepper. This time he got the salt and pepper but when he came back Tommy took a back road. Then
finally he snuck into the house. The bushes were untrimmed. The house wasn't decorated. The
doormat said "Go Away, I Don't Like You." There were big wooden doors covering the windows,
except for one small window and the curtain had big holes. Tommy looked in

  • 3. Personal Narrative : The School Day The school day was finally over. This was a particularly special day for me. Nothing special was happening but it was Friday and I couldn't wait to get home. I was leaving Spanish class and had to walk the whole length of the school building to get to the bus. I was concentrating on walking as fast and steady as possible without falling. I heard one of the bus' engine go off. I panicked and ran. My concentration had left the steadiness of my steps and had directed itself to the speed of my steps. When I got to the bus I felt a sudden sense of relief. I sat down on seat 16 like I'm accustomed to and plugged in my earbuds. I had slept seven hours that night. Needless to say, I was exhausted. I rested my head on a sweater I had in my ... I heard steps again. They were slightly slower and more clumsy than the ones before. My mom opened the door and gave me a dry smile. "Hi, mom?" I asked. "How was school?". She actually answered my question with another question. I decided to be more specific. "Are you ok?". She shook her head. "What happened?" "The turtle died honey." Her eyes started to become a slight red color. Tortoise, I thought. I always had to correct her. It seemed like the tortoise had been there forever. In my subconscious, I thought the tortoise would never die, even though I can't prevent the inevitable. And again, just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, they did. "Come here," she said with a slight tremble in her voice. I followed her to my living room. It was seven steps and took no more than a second to get there, but to me, it felt like a walk in the desert. Somehow I knew what was coming. What was waiting for me? My mind was holding back, making it seem like an eternity so that I wouldn't have to witness the horror that was waiting for me in the other room. • 5. Vollmann Poor People Nelson Mandela once said, "Poverty is not natural it 's man–made." This quote states that a person can overcome poverty if one has the desire to live a better life. In a novel called Poor People written by William T. Vollmann, the author travels around different countries and places to learn about poor people and to get a global perspective view. While interviewing different kinds of people, Vollmann would ask them one question: why are you poor? Looking at people 's answers Vollmann noticed that some of the people gave quite interesting answers. Vollmann went through a lot of situations where he just couldn 't imagine what life would be if he was ever to live like that. Another novel that has a similar poverty situation is called Let The Water Hold Me Down, written by Michael Spurgeon. Hank, the main character of the novel, experiences a tragic moment in his life. Losing his wife and daughter while drowning, this tragedy left him feeling like it's all due to his miscarrying about them. His life becomes full of sorrow, and the only way out it was to go to Mexico to his friend's place and restart his life over. In a new country of Mexico, this story takes place. Even though he had money, a house, and friends' support, he still experienced lots of pressure trying to survive in Mexico. Poverty has different meanings in everyone 's lives but by reading these two novels, there are three similarities that can be made about people living in poverty. When traveling to different ... People have always said you're so brave and fearless, but they don 't know I've felt more pain than some people will in an entire lifetime and all before being old enough to order myself a drink. I never learned how to channel my pain, I let it grow within me like a tumor killing me a little day by day. My parents sent me to the best psychiatrists money could buy but when they asked me, "what causes this pain" and then I'd obliterate any success we had made in that session by simplest of actions, walking out. Adam Cole was the most unexpected blessing I could have imagined or ever hoped for. Our love story was far from ordinary, it wasn't the type of love you write songs about, it's the one that grabs you, leaves you breathless and makes you feel like you're on fire. It took one Lupe Fiasco concert, one glance, one smile, one kiss, and one night to start the most amazing chapter of the Aliyah Jordan book. Our love of music had brought us together and it was what kept our little universe functioning without a star out–of–place. Every other Wednesday night we spent the evening at my parents house, and every time it was perfect. My childhood home had always smelt like roses and coffee. Two of my favorite things. Every Wednesday was just as amazing as the last, but there was one exception. Adam had decided to shake up our usual dinner and movie routine by suggesting it was time we go camping and I remember my dad laughing, "Son we Jordan's are good at 3 things, basketball, cooking, and being inside only people, just look at Aliyah here!" I remember laughing till my stomach hurt, but Adam was everything but amused. "Alright, Jordan's if you won't go to nature, I'll bring nature to you." • 9. The Characteristics Of Raskolyevsky's Duality Vs. Dostoevsky One of the most peculiar traits about Raskolnikov is that despite him murdering two people, he still has moments during the novel when he helps others. One would not expect generosity to be present in a man with a superiority complex, yet at times he can be found donating the last of his kopecks even when, he himself, desperately needs them. At times, this duality can be confusing to the reader because it seems as if there are two Raskolnikov's. Which one then, is the true Raskolnikov? Despite Raskolnikov's attempt to set himself above the common man, he cannot deny his true nature, as shown when he saves a young girl from the malicious intentions of an older man. Before his interactions with the young girl, the reader sees Raskolnikov acting in a selfish manner. After reading his mother's letter Raskolnikov stating that Dunya is to marry a wealthy older man he thinks, "how can she not sacrifice even such a daughter for the sake of such first born son! Oh, dear and unjust hearts" (Dostoevsky 44)! Egocentrically, he incorrectly assumes that the decisions his family has made are entirely for his benefit. As a "superior man", Raskolnikov does not need anyone's help at this point in his life. He is a man who is willing to kill for the sake of an idea. Further, he thinks he should be the one making decisions. Raskolnikov firmly states that "it won't happen as long as I live, it won't, it won't! I don't accept it" (Dostoevsky 44). Yet, by trying to control his family, it reveals how desperate he is to have order in his own life. Raskolnikov's life is falling apart, he has no job, owes money to his landlady, and (suffers from?) crippling anxiety. He uses his superior mindset as a coping mechanism to avoid addressing the problems that are plaguing his life. He does not have to take responsibility for them because he believes that his word is above the law. Therefore, his sister has to reject this marriage from Luzhin in his mind, showing the reader just how bad of a rut he is in life. This man is at his lowest point in life but he will not accept help from those that truly care about him. In his mind, control is the ultimate goal for him... yet, despite his selfish thoughts and controlling nature, he is involuntarily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That's some head of hair you have there, you had better fix that before you go outside." He continued as Azazel continued to fiddle with the tangle of hair on her cowlicked head. She goes to visit her mother down the hall for what is supposedly the final time. Ch.2 Azazel's mother lays in her sick bed, dying from makeup poisoning. Azazel rushed to her mother side. When her mother spotted the mess of her child her eyes widened in surprise, "My child, my dear precious Azazel. You're such a mess. I'm very glad I continued the course because it has offered me so much in opening my eyes on how life is for people who are women, different race, their sexual orientation, gender, and disabled. I never really realized how much I was limited too growing up as a girl, I was expected to be dolce, pretty and quiet. While boys were expected to do about whatever they wanted, they could get dirty, be loud, and cause a ruckus. I experienced this as a kid; my brother wouldn't get in trouble for doing certain things. If I tried to do what my brother did, I would get in trouble and be told, "A young lady shouldn't be doing that". It irritated me so much because I didn't know why my brother could get away with certain actions and I wasn't. We talked about white privilege and how it's a thing, we can't ignore it, however when I went to school in Germany I experienced the exact opposite. People who were African American, Asian, and Hispanic were the top of the food chain, to say, at my high school, they were popular and everyone looked up to them because they were the best at all the sports at my high school. I only understood white privilege when I moved to Wyoming funny enough; I went from a highly diverse upbringing growing up in the military, to pretty much a white–based town of Cheyenne, Wyoming. • 21. Characters In William Armstrong's The Scarlet Ibis Have you ever read about two characters that have so many things in common? Well, in "The Scarlet Ibis", the main character William Armstrong shares many similarities with the beautiful red bird that is found limp in a tree outside of the family's house. Early in the book, we find out that the main character, known as Doodle, had many complications at birth, which lead to the severe health problems he now has to face throughout his childhood. These problems were the reasons why Doodle was not normal like the kids around him. Walking, swimming, running, and playing outside were all things that Doodle had trouble partaking in. We are introduced to the Scarlet Ibis in the middle of the book in a depressing, yet beautiful way. When we meet the bird, it is lying in a tree, weak and frail. Quickly, we find a similarity that the two characters share. Doodle and the Ibis both have something pushing them until they die. For instance, Doodles brother was non stop pushing him to be better and better each day. "He collapsed onto the grass like a half–empty flour sack. It was as if he had no bones in his little legs. "Don't hurt me, Brother, he warned" (Hurst 467). As you can see, Doodle is forced daily to try to stand on his own, in the field near their house, which is not healthy for him. Knowing that Doodle has internal problems, you would have thought that his brother would not have pushed him so hard. Why would his brother be pushing him when he has so many problems, you may ask. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I got my diagnosis behind my parents back. Thirteen, the legal age that I can go to the doctor's office without a parent if I wanted. I never told them. They wouldn't understand, they never really did. The main cause of my mental illness was not being good enough. Having an older sister who was good at everything was hard to deal with. She excelled in academics, she held leadership roles in many clubs or organizations, and she was 'the perfect daughter.' My parents sometimes unknowingly compared me to my older sister. I was always one step below her. I got lower grades, less medals, and struggled in the things she always excelled at. What was worse was that I grew up in a very stereotypical Asian family. Getting anything below an 'A' was considered failure. I was expected to be the best at everything I put my hands on. I can clearly remember in 5th grade when I handed my mom a test we had taken in class. The bright red letters on the top of the test marked '112%.' It was a math pre–test we took earlier that week. I was able to get more than full points on material we had not yet learned, but I didn't receive much of a response. I then asked why she never complimented me if I had done well. • 37. Personal Narrative-It's Impose Time Valentine did make it to work on time, and was busy shelving records when her boss walked in. "Valentine, I need you to re–organize the Pop section when you're done with those. Some high schoolers were in here yesterday, and messed everything up." he said. He was being grumbly, which was never good. He had a slight disdain for high schoolers, as well as loud parties and royal icing. "Can do Neil." she said, using the wrong name to try and irritate him further. "Thanks Hero." Niall said. She flinched a little, knowing the feeling all to well. Niall had given her as many hours of work as he could, but even on her days off, she showed up and just hung out with the rest of the staff. She was constantly recommending new music to people, ranging from BMTH to Bruno Mars. Now she was in the coffee shop again, watching the purple sky flow to black, and sipping hot chocolate. When there was nothing else to see out the window, she looked at the door and watched as people came and went. The bell at the top of the door rang, a que for her eyes to follow the stranger. Ugh. It was the guy who spilled tea down her chest earlier. He had long, dark, curly hair, and it was pulled back into a ponytail. He was wearing black beans and a messy paint spattered tank top. This Christmas our task was to put a little change in the world, so we made supply bags to give to the needy. These bags comprised of blankets, canned food, water, and an inflatable pillow. My father woke me up before dawn to start the trip to the town. This trip took ½ a day on a cart behind a horse, but since the snow fell early it would take us twice as much time. We followed the elongated dirt road deep into the night. Here we came upon our first trial. It was our horse. Resulting in seventeen thousand two hundred eight crimes per day. This shocking number evidently demonstrates that on average too many crimes are committed everyday, and while this data is a reliable source that can be relied on to give people an idea of how many crimes are committed everyday on average; it fails in informing us on the reasons or in what situation the criminals were in to have to be in a position to break the law. I believe that people who have necessities in life have no choice than to do anything to no longer have those necessities. Many people grow up not having anything going towards their way say they end up getting involved in gangs, and doing bad things breaking the law everyday. But what happens when you are the head of the family and you're not putting food on the table and the only way out of that is by selling drugs? Everyone generally assumes that people in jail, or prison had something to do with drugs. I'm not saying that everyone is in a correctional facility because of drugs, but a big percentage of the people in jail in ghetto places are because of drugs, and why is that? Because drugs are the easiest way of getting out of being poor, or at least that what people who sell them think. When a teenager is arrested because of possession of drugs in a ghetto town, it's not very alarming because we all expect that to happen, but what happens when a middle age white man who has never had any problems with the law is arrested for the same reason? That's when we start asking questions and learn the truth of why people act in such ways. The person known as the head of the family is usually always thought to be the leader of the family. Apart from the river of blood rushing out the gaping neck wound, he looked pretty much the same as he did a few minutes before. His hand was still clasped around his bottle of beer and face was still frozen in a permanent gaze of boredom. The only thing different about James's face was the single tear that rolled down his cheek and hung on the cliff of his chin amongst his stubble. As it fell from his face, his body smashed forward into the wooden table. And in that moment I felt completely alone. James was the only reason I was there with the oudious group of so–called 'friends'. Only a few moments before we had been having a wonderful time, drinking wine out of chipped coffee mugs and reminiscing about 'the good old days'. Then in a beat of a heart, the lights gave out. This is a typical graduation day. Not only did these ceremonial events take place for Tulane University's class of 2009, but Ellen DeGeneres was there to congratulate them as well! This class was dubbed the "Katrina Class" for being survivors of the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Katrina was named one of the deadliest Hurricanes, causing more than 1,836 deaths. Tulane University is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the most significant amount of deaths took place and 80 percent of the city was destroyed. Most graduates have a lot of stress and worry about their futures, the uncertainty of where they are going or what they will become. Ellen is relatable when she tells the graduates how she didn't know who shes was, considering that, she was still dating men. Another use of a rhetorical question "But why am I here today?" to introduce an anecdote about her growing up in New Orleans. This question takes the audience's attention back to her, because, consequently, they know that Ellen will explain why she is there; giving them a reason to listen to her words. Once again, Ellen asks "What else can happen to you?" in order to commend the graduates of having success after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. She uses the hyperbole and rhetorical question, "So what I'm saying is, when you're older, a lot of you will be gay. Anyone writing this stuff down? Parents?" this keeps everybody's attention and loops the parents into relating the commencement speech to them as well. Rhetorical questions help Ellen by giving the crowd small moments to reflect and invites them into her speech, connecting to them and allowing them to smile during serious content. Furthermore, the use of hyperbole and metaphors are effective in this commencement speech. Ellen uses a hyperbole when she rationalizes her anxiety about the success of her sitcom after the public realize that she is gay. Ellen worried about this because in recent times, the ... In the coming of age novels Dr. Bird's Advice for Sad Poets by Evan Roskos and, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the theme that you should celebrate everything you are because what you're feeling is valid and shall pass is common throughout both books. In Dr. Bird's Advice for Sad Poets the main character, James Whitman is a junior in highschool who wakes up yawping and quoting Walt Whitman. From the outside he looks like an enigma. He lives in a small town with his abusive dad who kicked his sister, Jorie, out and, his submissive mother. James is struggling with severe depression and anxiety. To help cope with what he's feeling, James' has an imaginary, human size, bird, therapist. Because she's living inside James' head she is only able to tell James things he already knows but just doesn 't really want to admit. Through my research I have decided that Paul's eventual fate was not any one person's fault. Paul was just as much to blame as his father and teachers for Paul's suicide. Paul was never content with his house on Cordelia Street and was always dreaming about "movin' on up" while he worked at Carnegie Hall and watched the actors and actresses move about in their stately attire and live in the most luxurious of hotel suites. Because of this dream to get out of the area in which he lived, Paul hardly ever got along with his teachers and his father. The thought of taking full advantage of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul's only chance, it seemed was to steal the money he needed and live off of it for as long as he could. Paul stole more than $1000, enough to live for a month in New York City, at the time of the story, and only if spent cautiously. But, no... Paul would have none of that. It would have been a waste to have more money than he had ever seen in his life, and yet live just as he had throughout his life. He wanted to live in style, the way the rich folks did. So, Paul spent the money within a week on all the best clothes, the best food, the best hotel room, the best flowers, and the best life. The money disappeared within a week and Paul was forced to leave it all behind and return to the dreariness of middle class existence. Paul's damaged psyche could not bear to return the living–dead life that he hoped he had left behind forever, so he removed the living part with the help of a very large, very loud locomotive. Paul's father had abused him emotionally, and probably physically, throughout Paul's life. He did so much to Paul's flagging self–image that he had to boast to others to make himself feel big, when he felt tiny inside. When he finally achieved that "bigness" that he always wanted, the glamour of "the good life," his father found him out and took that away from him, or rather, made Paul give it up. • 51. Why I Hate Being Complacent Essay I hate being complacent. I try to fight complacency in all aspects of my life from academics to my sport of ultimate. Academically, complacency is the difference between putting in the time and effort to study for a test and shrugging it off with a simple "it'll be fine." Playing ultimate complacency looks like not doing another set of dead lifts or accepting a poor decision as acceptable just because it happened to result in a goal because "it'll work itself out." One of my main goals for this school year is to rid my life of these complacencies. And, honoring this commitment, I have been doing my work more thoroughly and not just at the last minute and have been pushing myself to become faster and smarter as an ultimate player. But even with this resolution to be better I am still complacent in those aspects of my life and will continue to be imperfect as long as I continue to be human. But, as I have learned throughout my time at Carleton, more specifically this term (and even more specifically the second half of this term) I am complacent in the way I view justice in this country. There are powerful forces that shape our criminal justice system that I have always vaguely known existed and have always vaguely understood that they are inherently and systematically racist. And even hearing the facts and numbers, my favorite things, on how racist our country is I chose to be indifferent. Both of us being quite tall girls without them, I believed that two borderline six foot girls walking around places like Walmart and the public library would illicit some sort of a response, although regrettably not as big as some other things one could do. After expressing these thoughts to her, she responded with, "If people don't look at you because you're tall, they'll look at you because you're falling." The man in the library felt the need to loudly tell us his opinion on our bodies, and plenty of women, mostly from the Baby Boomer generation, had the same judgmental look in their eyes as we went about our shopping. Non–conformity, I think, arises from the clash of generations. To my grandmother's generation, something that might be normally accepted in that era is being radically changed in mine. Society's values and strict social rules change with the pass in generations. One example of this can be seen in birth control; while an uncomfortable and weird taboo topic for my mum's mother, so much that my mother went out secretly to get her birth control pills, is a totally normal and okay topic in my day and age, as seen by the fact that my mom is usually the one that picks up my prescription for me. Teenagers, especially, love to rebel and branch out from the teachings of their parents, and effectively change what it means to conform by doing so. Another clash of conforming can be seen by changes in culture. Rochester has the Mayo Clinic systems to thank for being a mosh pit of many different world cultures all brought together. I was laying on the grass in my backyard drinking in the warm sun when my dad came out of the house with a smile on his face. I got onto the bike and slowly wobbled down the empty street, putting my foot on to the ground every time I felt like I was going to fall. At the end of the street, I turned around and wobbled back up the street. After a few rides like this I felt like I was getting the hang of it and decided to go a little faster. As I was reaching the end of the block I heard a car engine behind me. I realized too late that a car had turned onto the street. I got scared and panicked. The next thing I know I am falling. INTRODUCTION – ~ THESIS – When evaluating Arnold "Junior" Spirit from Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part–Time Indian and Jin Wang from Gene Luen Yang's American Born Chinese, similarities radiate in both characters as their disparity in race deem the two of them as outcasts in the entirety of society. In addition to their lack of social interactions, their uniformity in their impulsive decisions cost them each a dear friend. Although Junior and Jin are quite similar, they share differences in the way Junior tries bettering himself by fitting into both his Indian and Reardan culture whereas Jin changes himself in every possible way to become Americanized. *** The correspondence between Junior and Jin is detected in both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A world once filled with Asian friends and neighbors crashes harshly as Jin is left stranded in a white dominated school. Stereotypes and teasing are quickly placed on him from his racial background. Still new to the area, Jin presumes, "The only other Asian in my class was Suzy Nakamura. When the class finally figured out that we weren't related, rumors began to circulate that Suzy and I were arranged to be married on her thirteenth birthday. We avoided each other as much as possible" (Yang 31). Embarrassment clouds Jin as he realizes that he's not like the other kids in his class. With distinct features and his native tongue, Jin felt like a reject surrounded by his Caucasian classmates. He was entirely alone amongst his peers, and he didn't like that one single bit. In this way, it's clear how both Junior and Jin felt like outcasts in these two oceans of white students and teachers. *** Acknowledged in both novels, Junior and Jin's spontaneous actions leave them both friendless and bruised. In Junior's case, this meant ditching the reservation's schooling system and finding one that surpasses the education he was taught. In the spur of the moment, Junior decides to do just that and attend an all–white school in the neighboring town. Getting the courage to tell his best friend, Junior braces himself for Rowdy's reaction. Denial embedded his friend's senses; remoteness then trickled its way through his head ... If women were to have a job outside of the home, it would most likely be of a domestic or personal service, which was low pay and involved poor working conditions. Many women during this era struggled, especially single women who had to fend for themselves and find a decent job just to stay afloat. It looks like Bill is going to be alright." SSG Bell told him "What about Wallace and Erik?" Terry inquired about. "Erik is lucky to have a hard head, he's going to be fine, but have a hell of a headache. As far as Wallace you would need to speak to Dr. Sanders." • 78. Creative Story : A Short Story It was a dark halloween night. 7 year old Sophie and 13 year old Tommy were just heading home from trick–or–treat. Their town was a good place to go trick–or–treating. The neighbors always knew what candy the kids wanted. They remarkably knew what the Robinson family liked. (Sophie and Tommy) Just as they were heading in the door, Tommy saw something strange across the street. It was something he had never seen before. He saw his father watching television and he could smell fresh collard greens, mashed potatoes, and a big juicy steak. All he could think about was eating but he kept looking over at that house figure. Immediately, he took Sophie in and told his mom he was going to the Little Quick Market around the corner to get salt and pepper. Of course she said okay. Tommy slowly walked over toward the house. The wind was like ghosts singing. The leaves were crumbling like somebody was eating potato chips. Tommy started to walk a little faster. Then, a little faster. He started to hear screams, really loud screams. He turned around and ran and ran and ran until he got home. When he barged in his house his mom had a really confused look on her face. Although it was a confused look it was more of a "I caught ya" look. She asked why Tom didn't have the salt and pepper in my hand. He made up some lie and said the road was crossed off. That was the most stupidest excuse ever because for One, mom had already been in town to get dinner stuff just 1 hour ago. For Two, since Tommy was walking he could still get to the market. And for Three, his mom had saw him walk over to that house and then run back. "How about I answer that question", said mom. She went on and on about how Tom was in so much trouble for going over there. She was booming, and hollering, and shouting, and yelling. She sent Little Tom to the store again with seven dollars to get some salt and pepper. This time he got the salt and pepper but when he came back Tommy took a back road. Then finally he snuck into the house. The bushes were untrimmed. The house wasn't decorated. The doormat said "Go Away, I Don't Like You." There were big wooden doors covering the windows, except for one small window and the curtain had big holes. Tommy looked in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
