John Wilson And Thomas Church
Among all the authors this semester that I encountered, my strongest connections were near the beginning of the semester. It is difficult to pick one
favorite, because of commonality across the voices of Thomas Long, Paul Wilson, and Frank Thomas. In varying combinations, they share certain
beliefs about both the form and function of sermons. Wilson and Thomas both structure their sermons around parallel points: trouble in the Bible,
trouble in our time, grace in the Bible, and grace in our time. Long and Thomas share the belief that sermons should affect change of some kind in the
lives of their hearers. For Long, "sermons make demands upon the hearers, which is another way of saying that they provoke change in the hearers
(even if the change is a deepening of something already present). Thomas 's belief is that "in the pulpit, the preacher must influence behavior." The
points of divergence for these three authors are points that I like from all three authors, leading me to incorporate them all into my own sermons
whenever possible. Long 's major emphasis on sermon structure comes through the presence of focus and function statements. Other than that, he is
wide open to various ways of arranging the ideas within the sermon. I appreciate his fluidity in this area, because any kind of persuasive speaking
opportunity is affected by the intended audience just as much as the message itself. Consequently, one strict format is unlikely to be effective in all

Father Paneloux and The Plague
As a Christian speaking to the people of Oran, it would be very difficult to say anything to a people facing such terrible affliction. Even though Father
Paneloux believed what he was preaching, I believe he was completely wrong. This would make what I would say much different from what Father
Paneloux said. However, some strong points did emerge from his sermons. Overall, the two sermons in Albert Camus' The Plague fail to help people
become more faithful and fail to even preach to the people of Oran the truth.
Father Paneloux makes statements in his first sermon that condemn the people of Oran for their wicked behavior. Camus' description of the sermon
makes clear that Father Paneloux is a strong speaker. He describes him as using "a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though God may be allowing it to happen, He is not the one causing the affliction. Once again, God will not cause suffering until the time of
tribulation. Proof of this can be found in the book of Job where God calls Satan and has him afflict Job with nearly every affliction possible. Clearly,
just like his first sermon, Father Paneloux's second sermon displays his terrible understanding of the nature and actions of God and causes even more
people to turn away from God.
If I were to talk to the people of Oran, I would first try to make clear why many of Father Paneloux's ideas are incorrect without being mean to him.
I would definitely detail how this affliction is not a result of God's wrath and tell the people why this kind of thinking is completely wrong. I would
do this by ensuring the people that God does not cause suffering in this current age and that he even wants to help everyone through the affliction they
are currently experiencing. It would be very difficult to drive out the false doctrine that Father Paneloux has taught to the people of Oran, but that
would have to be my first priority. Otherwise, the rest of my sermon about God's love would not make any sense to a crowd that still believes God is
responsible for the suffering currently present in Oran.
My other priority if I were to give a sermon to the people of Oran would be to focus on God's love in the midst of all

The Sermon On The Mount Essay
The Sermon on the Mount is a sermon given by Jesus Christ found in the book of Matthew in the Holy Bible. The beginning of this sermon includes
a list of blessings called the Beatitudes. Jesus uses these to explain God's favor towards those who are striving for righteousness. For those who had
come to believe and follow Jesus as the son of God, every word that he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount was intended as words of encouragement
for Jesus's disciples and were taken as such. For those who were skeptical, the crowd, that Jesus was truly the son of God, Jesus's words took on a
totally different meaning. The Beatitudes, simple words that promote the humility of man, were explicit words of encouragement for Jesus's disciples.
Yet at the same time, to the crowd listening, the Beatitudes were an implicit invitation to become men of God by believing that this man is God in the
flesh, God in spirit, God almighty, God omniscient, God omnipresent, and God omnipotent.
Each of the eight statements of the Beatitudes begin with the word Blessed. This is ironic because those who would have been listening to the
Sermon on the Mount would have probably been Jewish. For those Jews who would have lived during that time probably never would have used the
word blessed to describe themselves. Therefore, those who were not convinced that Jesus Christ was the son of God would not have taken Jesus
literally. Because each Beatitude contained the word "blessed", this gave the crowd an

Character Analysis Of Garnie In Fair And Tender Ladies
In the novel Fair and Tender Ladies, the character Garnie is one of interest. As a child, he is full of wonder and easily excitable. Garnie is the
younger brother of Ivy Rowe, the main protagonist. Garnie is a major character because of how frequently he and Ivy interact and with how she
reveals more about her character from talking about him in her letters. When they were little, Garnie refused to play with his sisters Ivy and Silvaney
unless he could preach. They would often play funeral and Garnie would deliver a sermon about God. After the family moves to the town of Majestic,
Garnie immediately takes a liking to the preacher Sam Russell, as shown by how he goes to get saved on a nightly basis, only to be scolded by Sam
for doing so on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Garnie leaves his family to join Sam Russell's travelling revival and returns to Sugar Fork, he is a completely different character. He starts
spewing words of hatred and condemnation. Ivy's child Lulda dies as an infant, and Garnie tells Ivy that it was her fault and calls her a whore.
Garnie gives a speech about Lulda at her funeral until he is interrupted when Oakley returns. He then condemns his sister, Oakley, to Hell for
having an affair with Honey Breedwell. This demonstrates that Garnie is a dynamic character because he has changed from the sweet little boy
he was when he and Ivy were children and is now a hellfire and brimstone preacher. He calls both of his sisters whores because Ivy had a child as
an unwed mother and Oakley for having an affair. Any connection Ivy had with him beforehand is now meaningless because he now despises her.
Ivy detests religion because of how people use religion to justify condemning people and making people feel guilty about themselves. However, on
her death bed, Ivy begins to read the Bible and finds comfort in certain verses that introduce her to a religion that allows people to enjoy their lives
the way they see fit and does not serve the purposes of the people who preach the religion. Through Garnie's usage of religion to shame his sisters
and threatening them with damnation, she recognizes religion as a sincere confession of the flaws of man. However, this is a tragic revelation as she
has this epiphany at the end of her life and learned this from her brother, who she had cherished beforehand, telling her that she is damned to Hell for

Benjamin Franklin Almanack Essay
"In 1732 Benjamin published Almanack under the name Richard Saunders." He made it both entertaining and useful, and that made it very
profitable. The Almanack contained old proverbs of wisdom from many nations. They were copied and printed all abroad. Benjamin considered his
newspaper another way to communicate, where he sometimes published moral writers and his own works. He made sure he did not print libeling or
personal abuse. If someone came to him with such an article he would print it separate from his paper. The person was free to hand out their own
works, but Franklin was not going to subject his subscribers to such opinions. "In 1733 Benjamin sent a journeyman to Charleston, where a printer was
needed". Franklin agreed to pay one–third of the expense to get the same in profits. Unfortunately, the man only paid him sometimes, but upon is death

Jonathan Edwards Puritan Beliefs
One can hear a sermon any day of the week, because there are many preachers out there in the world. Many sermons are retold Bible stories from
the Old and New Testaments that tell how our ancestors lived, and teach us life applications of how to glorify God while we are living our lives.
Some examples from the Bible are: David and Goliath and the lesson of courage, Deuteronomy 32:4 "... a God of truth and without iniquity, just
and right is he" (KJV), and the Roman's Road of confession, acceptance of Christ, and salvation. For over a thousand years God's word has been
preached by many faithful men who follow Him. However, there were some of those faithful men who used God's Word and their own
improvisation to convict sinners and to put their trust in God. Those times resulted in an era called the Great Awakening of the 18th century and they
also put an end to the segregation era of the 20th century. Two of the faithful men during those eras were Jonathan Edwards and Martin Luther King,
Jr. . They both preached great sermons on confession and love. But they also had different points of view. When we read the two sermons our lives
and actions may never be the same as they were before, because of feeling ashamed and convicted, then we begin to live our lives as Christians.
Jonathan Edwards was a Puritan minister who sparked the era of the Great Awakening with his most famoussermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry
God. The Great Awakening was an era in the 18th

Anne Bradstreet's 'Upon The Burning Of Our House'
William Bradford was one of the main reasons that the Puritan movement got rolling. He led puritans to the New World. When people wanted to give
up he pushed them to keep moving. Bradford believed in something, stood for it, and did something about it. It was because of him that the Puritans
could live and have freedom of beliefs. His writings were historical narratives. He talked about the lifestyle of Puritans. He wrote Of Plymouth
Plantation, which was about the colony's first years in America. Bradford gives a telling account of how the Pilgrims were forced to flee to Holland in
1608, the immense suffering they underwent while there, their manner of living in that alien land, and their eventual determination to sail to the New
World. Bradford... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was serious, plain, and to the point. They felt it needed to be practical. Religion played a huge role in the lives of Puritans. They ate, slept, and
breathed this. Through each of the writings of William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards readers can see the essence ofPuritanism. The
three principles of Puritans (God's grace, simplicity, and divine mission) can be mirrored through each author's works. My personal favorite author
of the three is Anne Bradstreet. I am an emotional person and I admire that all of her writings are from the heart and completely relatable on every
level. There is something about the way that she writes that makes you feel what she is feeling, because in some way in your own personal life there
is a similar situation. In her poem "Upon the Burning of Our House" she talks about watching her house burn. Although I have not watched my house
burn, I have seen things so dear to me get caught in flames so to speak. God has more than once tried to put things in perspective for me and remind
me that this world is temporal and not eternal, that my focus should be on Him. I can relate with Bradstreet on the value of earthly and eternal
treasures. Anne Bradstreet's poetry spoke more than just in the colonial times. It is ever more present in today's time and just as

Visible Signs of Puritan Decay Essay
In times of Puritan society, the Ministers ruled with an iron fist as it portrays. No adultery, No drinking of vile drinks, and other stuff considered as a
sin in the society has been outlawed. Stuff such as violations of the Sabbath and swearing and sleeping during sermons and also with businesses,
abusing the lawyer system has been growing. Since the times of Puritan, society has been spiraling down hill fast in faith and morality.
In the Puritan days, sleeping and swearing during sermons were considered disrespect to the Minister that was preaching. Of course it didn't help that
the Minister preached about hell and brimstone and was monotone. Also the pews in the church were uncomfortable and the backs were high up. When

And then it's sometimes the Ministers fault. We all know some have more experience and more ability to preach than others, but you can't help it when
a Minister is giving his sermon and he is talking in monotone and the sermon itself is not really an attention grabber. Then there is thething about
swearing. Back then people would get wiped if they swear. Even out of service. Today it's not accepted in the family but when in the public eye and
especially with friends, all kinds of words come out. At least people have respect enough not to swear in the middle of service or in church for that
matter. But the problem is when they get out of church, they start swearing like there is no tomorrow throughout the whole week till next service. So
just maybe you can make a connection with the sleepers from service with the people that swear. They just might be the same people because that is
how society has gone so far from Puritan/Godly life. Lots of people just go to church just to look good; and most of the time, those type are the head
bobbers/sleepers because they are not interested in the service, just their reputation.
Another sign of decay in their society that we can see today is people having lots of contention and the rise of lawsuits and lawyers. There always
have been the issue of "money" in the society, but people did many strange and bad things to get it. As far as to murder some one or steal it. Some

The Theology Of The Holy Spirit And The Implications For...
Spirit–Led Preaching is a niche book. It is rare to find a work that so concisely captures the theology of the Holy Spirit and the implications for
expository preaching. Heisler answers the dilemma that today's typical evangelical "Spirit–shy Christians" face. Many contemporary preachers may
fear being labeled "unbiblical" for considering the need to surrender to the control of the Spirit because of how the church has attributed crazy
experiences to the ministry of the Spirit in preaching. Heisler values expository preaching as that which "holds the powerful combination of Word and
Spirit together". While Heisler acknowledges the "subjective aspect" found in Spirit–led preaching, he affirms it is "governed by the
grammatical–historical method". Heisler emphasizes this point throughout his work by marking the "benefits of the revealing ministry of the Holy
Spirit" that come from preaching "within the bounds of the biblical text".
Heisler's definition of illumination is the theological thread that ties together his emphasis of Word and Spirit in both preparation and delivery. He
writes, "What is bright light in the study will be white hot in the sanctuary". For Heisler, this plays practically into what the preacher chooses to edit
out or keep in his sermon notes, and how he animates his preaching points and biblical narratives . With this doctrine Heisler challenges preachers to
practice the spiritual disciplines as part of their sermon preparation. Citing Paul's example, he

Rhetorical Analysis Of Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God
On July 8, 1741, in Enfield Connecticut, the speech Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, was delivered. The sermon was given by British Colonial
Christian theologian Jonathan Edwards. His goal and purpose was to teach and warn people of the dangers of sins and the horrors of the afterlife. The
speech was given at his own congregation in Northampton, Massachusetts to an unknown effect. Edwards had started The Great Awakening from his
preaching. He was also a descendant of four generations of Puritan ministers and the most renowned and influential of Puritan Leaders. Edward began
his sermon by saying "In this verse is threatened the Vengeance of God on the wicked unbelieving Israelites, that were God's visible People, and lived
under Means of Grace: and that, notwithstanding all" He also states "Gods wonderful Works that he had wrought towards that People, yet remained, as
is expressed."(ver. 28. Void of Counsels)
This sermon was preached to warn people to convert to faith or face the danger of the Afterlife, which was the gave logic to the church audience.

The Sermon On The Mount
The sermon on the mount shows us Jesus 's ethical teachings on how a person should live his or life, the distinction from the law, and this has a
reaction from the society. Jesus ' Sermon on the mount has had a huge impact on the Christian religion and somewhat shaped the religion in a sense. It
has been a reference point for Christian ideals on the right way to live your life. It was a well constructed, alluring sermon that must have captivated
the minds of the people.
The sermon commences with the eight beatitudes, with prescribed blessings that follow them. These beatitudes advocates righteousness in our hearts,
unlike the pretentious righteousness that the can be associated with the law. The qualities that the beatitudes tell you to embody, puts Christ followers
at somewhat of a disadvantage because of the selfish, deceitful nature of humans. The blessing or reward that accompanies these beatitudes aren't for
this world, and by this it introduces the notion of kingdom that is far greater than this world. This supports the concept of sacrificing and enduring
persecution in this world, so you are rewarded in eternity. The sermon then strikes a metaphoric comparison with followers of Christ being the salt of
the earth, and the light of the world. In Leviticus 2:13 it shows us how salt was categorized as being divine back then. This means that Christ
followers are supposed to posses a sense of divinity, and shouldn't lose this quality by conforming to the things of the

Greed And Religion In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales
Greed and religion are two things you would not expect to intermingle, and yet Chaucer is able to develop a greedy religious character known as the
Pardoner. There are many religious characters in The Canterbury Tales besides the Pardoner including the Prioress, the Monk, the Friar, and the Parson.
Each character carries their own good and bad characteristics, but the Pardoner is obviously greedy. This character brings into question the greediness
of the Church and Chaucer's views. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer explores the theme of greed in relation to religion through The Pardoner's
Prologue and Tale. Despite his religious position, the Pardoner will demonstrate his greed by outlining the tricks he often plays on his listeners through
his prologue and tale. In the beginning of the fourteenth century, the Church developed a position for selling "heavenly treasury" to those who
"repented and confessed" (Bowden 277). This position, known as a pardoner, made it easy to be exempt from sin with an exchange of money. The
profit from selling these indulgences and relics was to be used to help with maintenance of the Church, but along with easy forgiveness came easy
dishonesty. The relics and indulgences could be sold by anyone that decided to call themselves a pardoner. In addition, a legitimate pardoner could sell
relics and/or indulgences while keeping the money for himself or without pardoning people in the proper way (Bowden 277). Chaucer's Pardoner takes
advantage of his

The Sermon On The Mount
Some of them wondering what power does Jesus possess? Who has to authorize him to heal the sick? And others wondered maybe he was the great
prophet that was foretold in the book of Isaiah. So through that, a crowd followed him to the mountain. According to Mathew chapter 5–7, Jesus only
preached about the kingdom of God. So that people were able to know what they had to do so as to enter the kingdom of God. For example, they
shouldn 't perform adultery, shouldn 't murder, shouldn 't divorce and the greatest of all the lesson is "Love your neighbor as you love yourself."
The "sermon on the mount" began with Jesus teaching Beatitudes, where he described the kingdom of God. He taught that those entitled to the
kingdom of God are the mourners, poor in spirit and others. He also explained the benefits to be received, for example, "those who are meek will
inherit the kingdom of God." Most people think that beatitudes are commands, but beatitudes are the just statement which portrays what God wants
from us so as to enter his kingdom. According to Quarles (2011), some of the wording in the beatitudes are symbolic inChristianity and meant to make
our spiritual growth stronger. For example, one is not supposed to be poor in spirit so that he may inherit the earth. After the Beatitudes, Jesus
preached about salt and light where he symbolizes salt as the wealth of the world which can be lost at any time, and it can never be regained. So
Christians are supposed to choose stay in light

John D. Arthurs 's ' Preaching With Variety '
Variety of Preaching by Jeffrey D. Arthurs
Book Analysis by CH (CPT) Stephanie Handy
The book that I read was entitled "Preaching with Variety" by Jeffrey D. Arthurs. It is a great resource and provided a wealth of information on
various preaching styles and form. "The book describes the rhetorical dynamics of biblical genres and suggest how preachers can reproduce some of
those dynamics in their sermon" (pg. 15). The content of the book consisted of illustrations, a forward, introduction, epilogue, notes, and a bibliography
section. The author discussed various was to use the psalm, parable, proverb, epistle, narrative, and apocalyptic literature in preaching. Four of the
topics discussed in the book focused on communication, the psalm, narrative, and parable. In chapter one, Arthurs pointed that God is the "great
communicator" who communicated with variety. Variety is found throughout the word of God. Because God is a great communicator who used
variety, preachers should preach with variety. Jesus used all kinds of form style, and genres of preaching. He knew how to get people attention.
Preaching with variety helps the text to come alive. "Jesus used anecdotes, stories, paradoxes, contradictions, humor, irony, questions, and answers"
(pg. 21), so we can too. Not only did Jesus used parables, objects, monologue and dialogue, but he used parables and symbols. For Arthurs, "God is an

Rhetorical Analysis Of Henry Mitchell's Celebration And...
Henry Mitchell does a great job of focusing on a few main arguments in Celebration and Experience in Preaching. These arguments center around the
experience of the Word and the vehicles of experience. Mitchell starts the book by stating that he believes that salvation and spiritual growth come
through a spiritual encounter with the Word and that preaching at its best is used by the Holy Spirit makes this experiential encounter possible.
Mitchell contends that this experience is not a coming to faith moment. But, rather the experiential experience is one that helps to "describe, interpret,
and help communicate" the faith experience. An experiential encounter with Word happens when three major elements are present. The first major
element that needs to be present for an experiential encounter with Word is a Biblical text that encourages trust in and obedience to Word, along with a
behavioral purpose calling for real–life application. The second major element needed is a basic understanding of hearing and other senses and how
they relate to belief in Word. The hearing experience must consist of vivid details and images, some sense of familiarity, and homiletic moves in
consciousness. Mitchell believes that details allow for a greater sense of meaning for believers, familiar associations call to mind similar experiences
that bridge the gap between then and now, and the homiletical moves break down abstract concepts bringing them to life for the hearer. The third major
element

The Causes Of Ethnic Cleansing In Burma
Burma
I argue that Wirathu of Burma's preaching of hate–filled sermons should not be tolerated. While it is not the cause of the ethnic cleansing in Burma, his
sermons can instigate violence between the Muslims and Buddhists in the country. This ignites more rationalization of the ethnic cleansing.Burma is no
stranger to war or outside influence from other countries in the west, and after the Buddhists of the county fought against military rule in 2007, they
won the international administration (Wade 6). Since the change in administration the Buddhist have been the most vocal about the external threat the
Islamic faith causes for the country (Wade 6). Most of the violence is directed toward the Rohingya Muslims that were banned from Bangladesh
because of violent campaigns (Wade 7). With the Buddhist being the majority, it is easy for them to push out the Rohingya with the ethnic cleansing,
and some argue that Wirathu is at the head of the violence.
Wirathu's sermons include ideas like "In every town there is a savage Muslim majority" (Hodal 4). Or "we are being sexually harassed, ganged up
on, and raped in in every town" (Hodal). Using this kind of language is bound to make his followers and others believe that these acquisitions are true
of the Rohingya. Wirathu also states that "Muslims are only well behaved when they are weak, and that when they are strong they become like wolfs or
jackals and hurt other animals" (Our World" Myanmar's Extremist Monk Wirathu). Wirathu's

Ethos Logos
THESIS: In Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" vivid imagery is utilized through ethos, logos, and pathos in an attemt to sway
the acts of sinners to be morally correct."
Jonathan Edward, an American theolagian and central figure in the awakening during the 1800's, was mostly known for leadning the great awakning
and his strong belief in hell: a very common topic during his time. In his sermon " sinners in the hands of an angry god," preached on July 8, 1741 in
Enfield, Connecticut. Edward emphasizes gods power and how easy it is for god to drop you in hell, so therfore you should do everyhting you can to

"Sinners in the hands of an angry god" is a sermon written by Jonathan Edwards, an American theolagian. The sermon was preached during the periode
of great awakening when it was a time of religiouse revival. The Great Awakening was essentially a spiritual awakening of different religious groups in

Finally, the use of logos in edwards preach is important because facts are needed in order to make a valid position and point. Opinion is great, but
the readers and listeners need to know the facts in order to listen and agree to edward ethically and emotionally. Ethos, logos, and pathos in edwards

Eswine Homiletical Ideals
Preaching to a Post–everything World offers several contributions to the art of preaching. New ideas and concepts facilitate sermon design and
construction; while at the same time a fresh perspective was given to old ideas and concepts. Eswine's work added to the discussion of expository
Christ–centered preaching as well. In regard to sermon design, Eswine offered several new ideas and concepts. First, he suggested that preachers ask,
"Could I now reach who I once was?". Normally preachers observer their listeners; however, this question causes preachers to exegete themselves,
motivating them to recall their journey along the path of sanctification. "Remembering where we'd be without God and then ministering to others out
of that knowledge" promotes empathy with listeners (11). As a result, preachers are able to construct sermons tailored to meet the needs of their
listeners since they can relate to their struggles and situations as well as their questions and concerns.

provisions from the biblical text" (50): Divine Armor, Divine Beatitude/Promise, Divine Wisdom/Fruit, Divine Gift, Divine Diaconate, Divine Miracle,
Provision of Community, Divine Silence, and Divine Self. These provision anchor preachers to the textual situation, moreover, they echo the
provisions given in creation and what mankind is being redeemed toward (51). Implementing the FCF and the echoes of redemption will lead

soul and draw all; even the mentally retarded can be saved through the sermon. Lectures appeal to the intellect and thus (but not improperly) exclude
some people. Not everyone in the congregation is equipped to follow a seminary–level sermon, Classroom–style lectures are a valid format that you
should neither neglect nor confuses with sermons.
There is a time and a place for all things. Preaching and teaching are two separate gifts. Teaching helps people believe what they can understand, while
preaching helps people trust what is beyond their understanding. "Now these are the gifts Christ gave to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You're there to deliver a message. Preaching and teaching does not mean everything in your ministry. But preaching and teaching starts all the fires in
your ministry.
Your outline serves the message. It is not the message. Don't confuse rhetoric with the message. The greatest thing you can do is bring people into the
presence of God's Word and get out–of–the–way.
A lot of preacher like to stay in the way. Don't ever stand in front of a group of people with a Bible in your hand and not expect change... That book
you're holding is THE... VERY... LIVING... WORD... OF... GOD. You must expect God is going to use you... I expect lives will be changed. Your
sermon, whether it is rewritten or extemporaneously, should be well organized. Do not make your sermons into longhorn steers–a point here and a
point there, and you know what's in the middle. To the congregation, a five–minute ramble is subjectively twice as long as a fifteen–minute,

Prosperity Gospel Teachings
Osteen's lectures and "self–help" books provide the primary examples of his prosperity gospel preaching. Though he does address scripture, it is
almost never the focus of his teachings. For example, his books, like Think Better, Live Better: A Victorious Life Begins in Your Mind focuses tuning
out negativity and on mastering positive thinking to reach success and claim the destiny that God equipped each person to handle. His other books
have similar messages, such as, offering step–by–step guides to having productive and positive days, and instructing readers to find the value that God
has hidden within them. They all mention God and his influence and intentions, like encouraging readers to start thinking about "themselves the ways

Under this understanding of the gospel, the promises of Christianity and capitalism are the same: hard work, whether financially or spiritually, will
lead to material wealth and success. In fact, a major critique of prosperity gospel is that it takes advantage people at or below the poverty line by
teaching them that prayer is the true answer to their economic woes, capitalizing on their desire for financial and spiritual help by pushing religious
materials like Osteen's books, and the donation plate toward those who are in real financial need, in order to accumulate wealth for the multibillion
dollar institution. Conversely, prosperity gospel also suggests that those who are physically and financially well–off are inherently godly, according to
their belief that physical and financial blessings are always a gift from God. This essentially reinforces the capitalist notion of the superiority of the
upper classes, who, as a result, are not only seen as superior due to monetary wealth, but are also assumed to be morally and spiritually greater. In
short, material success that Osteen promises in his prosperity gospel preaching parallels the promise of the potential for success and social mobility
fostered by capitalism. Again, American values, in this case capitalism, are foundational to televangelism and embodied by Osteen through his sermons
and religiously intonated self–help books. Not only that, but the material promises of prosperity gospel are also this likely to foster evangelical support
of the capitalist system, an idea which is gaining traction with American religious historians19 some even attribute Trump's success in the 2016 election

Puritanism And Its Effect On Society
Puritanism can be described as belonging to a covenant relationship with the Lord with expectation to free them from their sins ("Puritanism/Religion").
Studies from "Puritanism/Religion" show that what set Puritanism apart from the rest was the way it was preached and the intense experience it gave
many. The style and teaching of the Bible have evolved over time. According to the "Journal of Church and State," the Puritans connected a covenant
relationship with unifying themselves (2014). McMahon (n.d.) stated they wanted a pure church with the Word of God.
Preachers In Salem
The path to becoming a preacher started very early on in their lives. Stated in McMahon's (n.d.) writing, preachers were raised by godly parents who
educated them with the basic standards of that time. They were then sent to achieve their ministerial training, that could either take place at Oxford or
Cambridge University. The process still wasn't finished, they needed to shadow a godly minister. The final step was actually preaching to the
congregation under the watch of the godly minister. These preachers were there to honor Christ and make him happy, they didn't care if they got paid
or not. There were hours of studying and preparation for each sermon preached (McMahon, n.d.). Everyone was relying on them to provide them with
the best and most accurate information about their Lord. According to the "Journal of Church and State" (2014) and McMahon (n.d.), the preachers of
the gospel really wanted to

My View Of The Wilderness
The biggest challenge for this sermon in class was combining Andrew's sermon with my own. After I told him my wilderness plan we decided we
would both focus on the wilderness. He would cover the literal wilderness that included nature and I would cover the meaning of the wilderness as it
was used in the Bible. In general, my view of the wilderness was as a negative thing while his view of the wilderness has more possibility to be a
positive thing. With this being a good format to craft our own sermons from, weaving them together was the hard part. We wanted it to be a true
dialogue and not just split Tom Long's methodology into parts. We each desired to discuss the text and the real world as we spoke instead of
assigning the biblical work to one person and the real work examples to the other. This created more work on our own parts but I would say that it
was worth the effort. We found natural places where Andrew's points and my own could be intersected to balance each other out. Quite often we
were able to enlighten the other's point of view and provide a way for our audience to fully hear the good and the bad about the wilderness. We also
noticed that we preach with different tones and wondered how that would work with our audience. We thought about consciously matching energy
levels but we recalled the value of being true to yourself as you preach and decided to preach as we normally would individually and hope that our
styles blended together nicely. In the

A Summary Of The First Great Awakening
Described as theologically significant, The First Great Awakening (c. 1735–1743) was the beginning of a revitalization that hit the American colonies
by storm. It began to form once religion had eased down and preachers began to take an emotional foot in religion and increasing liberalism – Armenia
(free will) ideals began to form. George Whitefield, a circuit rider who preached spiritual awakening, and Jonathan Edwards, imposed fear in people by
claiming God had already chosen who get his salvation, were the main contributors to the First Great Awakening. The Second Great Awakening
(c.1795–1830) was experienced across the country due to the advancement in the nation's economic growth. Preachers often spoke emotionally about
their message to increase the reaction in people. Preaches proclaimed that the power of eternal salvation is in the hands of the person to decided to be
saved and avoid eternal damnation. This ideals were closest related/influenced by Arminianism which sinfulness is a choice rather than a destiny in
which it appealed to more people because of its optimistic outlook. The First Great Awakening changed religiousideology by promoting Calvinist ideals
and individualism amongst people; The Second Great Awakening promoted salvation and damnation at the expense of the person true willingness to be
saved, positive female roles in the church and the infusion of lower classes with higher classes; both transforming the methods of worship to become

Just Say No to Boring Sermons:
Preaching and the Formation of my Pastoral Identity
My little sister and I used to get in trouble for laughing during church, basically all the time. And if we weren't getting in trouble for laughing, it was
for fidgeting too much, or doodling on the back of the paper from the Ritual of Friendship pad, or anything else that gave Mom any idea that we
weren't listening to the sermon. But the sermon was boring. Our preacher was boring. The preacher at my grandmother's church was boring. The
televangelists my father watched were boring. I remember growing up thinking the single most boring thing I could grow up to become (besides maybe

I talk with Jesus as though he is physically beside me all the time, in my car, in my kitchen... it doesn't matter. And I carry this belief into my preaching
– I want my congregation to feel that Jesus is a friend, that he is always right there beside them. It's a sort of
"God is Dad, Jesus is our brother, and the Holy Spirit is Mom" approach, although I have yet to put it into those words for any congregation. I have
been working on making my preaching very easygoing and approachable, and even beyond that, I find that I absolutely love the exegetical work that
goes into sermon prep, and bringing that into my sermons as well so that my congregation goes on the same exegetical journey I went on. Rose calls
this conversational preaching and says that in this style, "the preacher and the congregation are colleagues, exploring together the mystery of the
Word for their own lives, as well as the life of the congregation, the larger church, and the world." This, I believe, is what is theologically and
ideologically required of a sermon. People don't want to hear the same Bible stories again and again that they've been hearing since their earliest
Sunday School days, at least not in the same contexts. After awhile, the message becomes so familiar, they tune out. I know I

Sermon On The Mount And Romans Analysis
In The Sermon on the Mount and Romans twelve, Jesus and Paul teach that we must love our enemies. As a kid I just brushed off the idea as a
normal thing. I realize now what a crazy idea Paul and Jesus are teaching. No one goes out and turns the other cheek or feeds someone they hate;
unless they are trying to be like Jesus or are following another religion that teaches these ideas. I personally struggle with turning the other cheek
immensely. I retaliate verbally and i'm usually not very nice. I don't love my enemies and don't see how Paul and Jesus were able to love their
enemies. I understand how Jesus did it but Paul is not God in the flesh. I know he saw a light on the way to Damascus and heard a voice from heaven

The idea seems important to Jesus though because he compared us with salt and light. 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its
saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 "You are the light
of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and
it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
Father in heaven. In these verses Jesus talks about how pointless non salty salt is and how pointless a hidden light would be. I think these verses
show how much Jesus wants us involved in our lives and our faith. Jesus doesn't want us to be useless and bland. Jesus wants us to make the world
better and show the world love and compassion through out good deeds. Paul in Romans twelve gives a more specific call to use our gifts for the
church but the message is very similar. They both just want christians to answer the call and to live in the body and serve with whatever they

The First Great Awakening And Jonathan Edwards And George...
In the early 18th century, there was an increased movement away from the church due to the encouragement to value logic and reason over faith in the
church. This caused the faith in the church to become incredibly low. Going to church started to be a chore, and individuals would only go to receive the
sermon, if at all. Upon seeing the overall state of religious faith, preachers began taking their sermons to the people by preaching in central areas and
going from church to church throughout the colonies. This became known as the first Great Awakening. At the forefront of the Great Awakening were
preachers that came from England who would use evangelism to bring their word to the religiously complacent population of the colonies. The most
prominent of these preachers were Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. In other words, the first Great Awakening was an explosion in
evangelical activity in the colonies.(The Albert.io Team)Jonathan Edwards was one of the sparks of the first Great Awakening. A Calvinist, he
believed that mortal men and woman completely depended on the salvation of God (The Great Awakening). As a believer in the evangelical method,
he would not simply preach in one place. He would travel from church to church, any that would welcome him, to spread his message. His sermons
were not theatrical. He would not excessively gesture or feel a need to act along with his sermons. His sermons were filled with emotion that was
evident through his voice.

Jonathan Edwards And Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God
Two On–Time Sermons
One can hear a sermon any day of the week, because there are many preachers out there in the world. Many sermons are retold Bible stories from
the Old and New Testaments that tell how our ancestors lived, and teach us life applications of how to glorify God while we are living our lives.
For over a thousand years God's word has been preached by many faithful men who follow Him. However, there were some of those faithful men who
used God's Word and their own improvisation to convict sinners and to put their trust in God. Those times resulted in an era called the Great
Awakening of the 18th century and they also put an end to the segregation era of the 20th century. Two of the faithful men during those eras were...

"I Have A Dream", became the most famous of his speeches, but people should also consider his other sermons, particularly, "Loving Your Enemies".
This sermon teaches us how we should love the people who hate us, and not hate them back. Kings' purpose for preaching this sermon was because
he wanted to provide answers. The segregation era of the 1900's was a time when the white people were very racist to the black people and they
separated areas of where the black people had to go. One example would be when the black people had to use the restroom and they could not use
the white people's restroom, they would have to like walk a mile to their restroom, labeled "Colored Only", and they would be in dirty places, and that
pitted the blacks against the whites. However, the purpose of preaching his sermon was because he wanted to show how Jesus' teachings teach us not to
hate our enemies, because in the sermon, "... this the very center of Jesus' thinking, this is: that hate only intensifies the existence of hate and evil in
the universe" (King 6). King wanted the people to think like how Jesus has thought when our hate is stirring up evil into the universe. Hate is one of
the main values of sin that Satan wants us to have, so we must be able to overcome our hate with Christ's love.
Throughout Edwards' sermon, he used an amount of metaphorical imagery to persuade his listeners to confess their

and they never missed or turned down an opportunity to bring the word of the Lord to someone in need of it.

about his faith saying that God can't help him, but because of all this he was even more on fire for the lord and trusted that he had a plan for him

in time Eric Liddell got the opportunity to leave prison but gave it up so that they would release a woman that was pregnant, he sacrificed his freedom

he baptized them in the bathroom of the jail "Some men live free in this life, only to face an eternal prison in hell. You're in prison in this life, but

The Eight Beatitudes In The Sermon On The Mount
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduced the eight beatitudes to teach his followers how to live an ideal Christian life. He taught those who
listened about the 8 important blessings to guide us to soon be living an everlasting life with God in His kingdom above. Some of the Beatitudes
influence us to feel compassion towards those who have wronged us, to be able to act out of the goodness of our hearts, and to bring peace and
harmony to friends and enemies in times of disagreement. These Beatitudes are significant to us as Christians, for they shall enlighten us with Jesus'
teachings for a virtuous and moral life here on earth and above. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" is the fifth beatitude that
Jesus had said on the Mount. This Beatitude means to show forgiveness to those who have wronged you and to always be compassionate and
sympathetic towards them. The idea of being merciful means to give up seeking revenge to those who have hurt them and follow Jesus' ways of
turning the other cheek. This Beatitude can be applied to my own life in many situations, situations in which I have been able to love someone
unconditionally despite the fact that they've betrayed me. A situation I've experienced betrayal was when my friend had gone behind my back
spreading personal things that I had confided in her to keep private, but instead she had spread it like wild fire. As a result, I did not think of revenge

meaning and truth came about during his personal testimony of conversion when, at the age of seventeen he read 1 Timothy 1:17. It was then when he

Essay The Sermon on the Mountain
The word of Jesus found in Luke 6:20–26 are the opening statements of His Sermon on the Plain. As with any other passage there are translation
differences, literary, historical, linguistic, economic and sociological backgrounds for this passage. It is sometimes difficult to discern the original, or
real, meaning of biblical passages and Luke 6:20–26, and beatitudes in general, are no different.
The Sermon on the Mount, found in Mark 5–7, is generally referred to as the greatest sermon ever preached. Jesus begins His sermon by stating the
eight beatitudes, and the passage in Luke 6:20–26 contains a subset of these beatitudes combined with a corresponding set of woes.
There are two genres used in this passage. Each of the first four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first three beatitudes (blessings for the poor, hungry, and weeping; verses 20–21) has same wording in the NIV and the NASB and the only textual
difference in the NLT is the beginning of "God blesses." Verse 22 (blessings for the persecuted) expresses blessing for the hated, excluded, insulted,
and rejected in the NIV; the hated, excluded mocked, and cursed in the NLT; and the hated, ostracized, insulted and scorned in the NASB. A common
attributed of the persecuted among the NIV, the NLT, and the NASB is hated, and the remaining three vary. Verse 23 contains no significant textual
differences among the NIV, the NLT, and the NASB. Like the first three beatitudes, the first three woes (woe to the rich, well fed, and laughing; verses
24–25) are the same in the NIV and the NASB, but the NLT uses, "what sorrows await you are" to describe the woes. In verse 26, woe is expressed
for those who "everyone speaks well of" in the NIV, for those "who are praised by the crowds" in the NLT, and those who "all men speak well of" in
the NASB. (Note that any biblical quotation from this point forward, unless otherwise indicated, is quoted from the New International Version
published in 2011.)

Professor Suzanne Duchesne
As a future minister, I recognize the importance in understanding my theological perspective which has an effect on my understanding of the role as
a minster and particularly the role of preaching. One's personal theology affects the neurological wiring in one's brain which unconsciously
influences decisions and actions. There are specific theological views that I believe shape my understanding of a minister's role as well as preaching.
One particular theological view that shapes how I understand the role of a minister and shapes my homiletic process is also a doctrinal belief of my
denomination that I wholly subscribe to. This tenant is referred to in the reformed tradition as "priesthood of all believers." What that means is that I
believe Jesus is a gift from God and it is the responsibility of all those who claim to be Christians to minster to others. This effects my preaching as I
am consciously aware of my sermon's ability to help others view me as someone who is on this journey with them, who happens to have more
expertise in biblical studies guiding them, but who is not belittling them. Lucy Atkins Rose suggests keeping a sermon conversational, and this is a
way in which I find myself striving towards in my homiletical approach. I believe this method offers a more relational experience and, as she also
suggests, would inspire growth

In the eyes of God, we are all sinners. July 8, 1741, John Edwards preached to his congregation that no matter what we do, God would send us to
hell unless we spill our blood on the cross. Edwards's sermon was one of the most pivotal, volatile, and stirring sermons that set the standard for
hellfire and brimstone sermons. Edwards's describes all of us as sinners and how our lives lay perilously in god's angry hands. To this day, we still
have pastors preaching hellfire and brimstone sermons. While 272 years separate John Edwards from modern day pastors, we can still see the
ever–lasting correlation that is derived from John Edwards in modern day pastors. Edwards describes hell as being the most horrific place and how no

That question weighs on everyone's mind. What do I do: stop drinking, stop having martial affairs, stop sitting at home watching the pregame

says, "We must spill our blood on thy cross to be saved by Jesus Christ and almighty God (Hagee)." What the hell does that mean John Hagee? No
matter what I do, no matter what I say. I'm still bound to the fiery wells of hell. I mine as well live my life to the fullest, drink and hang out with
Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker, and Jose Cuervo, enjoy my time with my wife and kids, and watch football on Sundays. Why should I let fear have
a hold on me? In the end, we all end up in some place weather its heaven or hell. Today's pastors have the same format and the same connection that
John Edwards's had 272 years ago. Prime example is Pastor Charles Lawson preaching. Charles Lawson preaches with immense intensity to capture
your soul. He yells at the top of his lungs, and raises his hand and tells his congregation, "You must embrace God or you will go to hell (Lawson)."
Lawson brings up recent events such as deaths in the community. Just like Edwards brought up about your kin dying unexpectedly, Lawson brings up
how any day could be your day of judgment. Bringing up recent events and unexpected death gives you since of connection with yourself and death.

The Pardoner of The Canterbury Tales Essay
The Pardoner of The Canterbury Tales
How can a man exact vengeance on God if there is nothing a mortal can do to hurt Him? The Pardoner was born sterile, which resulted in abnormal
physical development. He blames God for his deformities and attempts to attack God by attacking the link between God and mankind – the Church.
In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer indirectly depicts the characters through the stories they tell. The tale is a window upon the person that tells it.
However, the Pardoner's tale seems to contradict this situation. The Pardoner, an immoral man, tells a moral story because he believes that doing this
will further his ultimate objective – revenge upon God for his anomalous physical attributes. "He had the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Pardoner's tale has an important theme, "Radix malorum est cupiditas," which translates to "Greed is the root of all evil." However, the Pardoner
does not practice what he preaches. His vocation, which involves selling false pardons and relics for a profit, is a contradiction to his theme. "And
thus I preach against the very vice/ I make my living out of – avarice" (243). The Pardoner continues with his tale and condemns gluttony, drinking,
gambling, and swearing, but then declares that he is guilty of each one. It is evident that the Pardoner is a hypocrite and that he has no intention of
changing.
In the tale, three young rioters discover that a good friend has died and they mistakenly believe he was killed by a man named Death. They pledge
that they will find Death and avenge their friend. As they embark on their quest, they pass by an old man and criticize his age. They inquire about
Death, and the old man mentions that he left Death by a tree. The rioters proceed to the tree, but find a pile of gold florins rather than Death.
Ultimately, the three young men kill each other in a vain attempt to increase their personal share of the gold. Thus, the young men set out to find Death
and they succeeded in their search. Their greed was the cause of their demise. The Pardoner is analogous to the rioters because

Leonora Tubbs Tisdale: Personal Theology Of Preaching
Personal Theology of Preaching Paper
When it comes to preaching, there are a variety of styles, techniques and methodologies to consider. From my own experience, I have found that
however a person chooses to preach, there is no one size fits all approach; meaning that each preacher needs to find their own personal style. I think of a
sermon like a softened ball of clay; each preacher has their own unique mold that will create a particular impression into one side of the clay when
they preach a sermon. The congregation receiving the sermon then also has a mold that will leave an impression on the other side of the clay. Both
molds shape the clay, or in other words, both the preacher and the congregation play a role in how the sermon is given ... Show more content on

His technique provides structure and an easy to follow outline that allows preachers to keep their sermons focused and clear, while allowing
congregation members to have a format that is easy to follow and understand. However, one aspect that I would argue Wilson is missing, is an aspect
of testimony throughout a sermon. To me, Anna Carter Florence's technique of testimony leads me to the image of a preacher bringing their own
personal passion and experience into a sermon, and I think this is very important for preachers to do. If a preacher is able to illustrate, identify or
show a congregation how Scripture and God is at work in his/her personal life, it will help a congregation to search for how Scripture and God is at
work in their own

John Wilson And Thomas Church

  • 1. John Wilson And Thomas Church Among all the authors this semester that I encountered, my strongest connections were near the beginning of the semester. It is difficult to pick one favorite, because of commonality across the voices of Thomas Long, Paul Wilson, and Frank Thomas. In varying combinations, they share certain beliefs about both the form and function of sermons. Wilson and Thomas both structure their sermons around parallel points: trouble in the Bible, trouble in our time, grace in the Bible, and grace in our time. Long and Thomas share the belief that sermons should affect change of some kind in the lives of their hearers. For Long, "sermons make demands upon the hearers, which is another way of saying that they provoke change in the hearers (even if the change is a deepening of something already present). Thomas 's belief is that "in the pulpit, the preacher must influence behavior." The points of divergence for these three authors are points that I like from all three authors, leading me to incorporate them all into my own sermons whenever possible. Long 's major emphasis on sermon structure comes through the presence of focus and function statements. Other than that, he is wide open to various ways of arranging the ideas within the sermon. I appreciate his fluidity in this area, because any kind of persuasive speaking opportunity is affected by the intended audience just as much as the message itself. Consequently, one strict format is unlikely to be effective in all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Father Paneloux and The Plague As a Christian speaking to the people of Oran, it would be very difficult to say anything to a people facing such terrible affliction. Even though Father Paneloux believed what he was preaching, I believe he was completely wrong. This would make what I would say much different from what Father Paneloux said. However, some strong points did emerge from his sermons. Overall, the two sermons in Albert Camus' The Plague fail to help people become more faithful and fail to even preach to the people of Oran the truth. Father Paneloux makes statements in his first sermon that condemn the people of Oran for their wicked behavior. Camus' description of the sermon makes clear that Father Paneloux is a strong speaker. He describes him as using "a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though God may be allowing it to happen, He is not the one causing the affliction. Once again, God will not cause suffering until the time of tribulation. Proof of this can be found in the book of Job where God calls Satan and has him afflict Job with nearly every affliction possible. Clearly, just like his first sermon, Father Paneloux's second sermon displays his terrible understanding of the nature and actions of God and causes even more people to turn away from God. If I were to talk to the people of Oran, I would first try to make clear why many of Father Paneloux's ideas are incorrect without being mean to him. I would definitely detail how this affliction is not a result of God's wrath and tell the people why this kind of thinking is completely wrong. I would do this by ensuring the people that God does not cause suffering in this current age and that he even wants to help everyone through the affliction they are currently experiencing. It would be very difficult to drive out the false doctrine that Father Paneloux has taught to the people of Oran, but that would have to be my first priority. Otherwise, the rest of my sermon about God's love would not make any sense to a crowd that still believes God is responsible for the suffering currently present in Oran. My other priority if I were to give a sermon to the people of Oran would be to focus on God's love in the midst of all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Sermon On The Mount Essay The Sermon on the Mount is a sermon given by Jesus Christ found in the book of Matthew in the Holy Bible. The beginning of this sermon includes a list of blessings called the Beatitudes. Jesus uses these to explain God's favor towards those who are striving for righteousness. For those who had come to believe and follow Jesus as the son of God, every word that he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount was intended as words of encouragement for Jesus's disciples and were taken as such. For those who were skeptical, the crowd, that Jesus was truly the son of God, Jesus's words took on a totally different meaning. The Beatitudes, simple words that promote the humility of man, were explicit words of encouragement for Jesus's disciples. Yet at the same time, to the crowd listening, the Beatitudes were an implicit invitation to become men of God by believing that this man is God in the flesh, God in spirit, God almighty, God omniscient, God omnipresent, and God omnipotent. Each of the eight statements of the Beatitudes begin with the word Blessed. This is ironic because those who would have been listening to the Sermon on the Mount would have probably been Jewish. For those Jews who would have lived during that time probably never would have used the word blessed to describe themselves. Therefore, those who were not convinced that Jesus Christ was the son of God would not have taken Jesus literally. Because each Beatitude contained the word "blessed", this gave the crowd an ... • 4. Character Analysis Of Garnie In Fair And Tender Ladies In the novel Fair and Tender Ladies, the character Garnie is one of interest. As a child, he is full of wonder and easily excitable. Garnie is the younger brother of Ivy Rowe, the main protagonist. Garnie is a major character because of how frequently he and Ivy interact and with how she reveals more about her character from talking about him in her letters. When they were little, Garnie refused to play with his sisters Ivy and Silvaney unless he could preach. They would often play funeral and Garnie would deliver a sermon about God. After the family moves to the town of Majestic, Garnie immediately takes a liking to the preacher Sam Russell, as shown by how he goes to get saved on a nightly basis, only to be scolded by Sam for doing so on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Garnie leaves his family to join Sam Russell's travelling revival and returns to Sugar Fork, he is a completely different character. He starts spewing words of hatred and condemnation. Ivy's child Lulda dies as an infant, and Garnie tells Ivy that it was her fault and calls her a whore. Garnie gives a speech about Lulda at her funeral until he is interrupted when Oakley returns. He then condemns his sister, Oakley, to Hell for having an affair with Honey Breedwell. This demonstrates that Garnie is a dynamic character because he has changed from the sweet little boy he was when he and Ivy were children and is now a hellfire and brimstone preacher. He calls both of his sisters whores because Ivy had a child as an unwed mother and Oakley for having an affair. Any connection Ivy had with him beforehand is now meaningless because he now despises her. Ivy detests religion because of how people use religion to justify condemning people and making people feel guilty about themselves. However, on her death bed, Ivy begins to read the Bible and finds comfort in certain verses that introduce her to a religion that allows people to enjoy their lives the way they see fit and does not serve the purposes of the people who preach the religion. Through Garnie's usage of religion to shame his sisters and threatening them with damnation, she recognizes religion as a sincere confession of the flaws of man. However, this is a tragic revelation as she has this epiphany at the end of her life and learned this from her brother, who she had cherished beforehand, telling her that she is damned to Hell for ... • 5. Benjamin Franklin Almanack Essay "In 1732 Benjamin published Almanack under the name Richard Saunders." He made it both entertaining and useful, and that made it very profitable. The Almanack contained old proverbs of wisdom from many nations. They were copied and printed all abroad. Benjamin considered his newspaper another way to communicate, where he sometimes published moral writers and his own works. He made sure he did not print libeling or personal abuse. If someone came to him with such an article he would print it separate from his paper. The person was free to hand out their own works, but Franklin was not going to subject his subscribers to such opinions. "In 1733 Benjamin sent a journeyman to Charleston, where a printer was needed". Franklin agreed to pay one–third of the expense to get the same in profits. Unfortunately, the man only paid him sometimes, but upon is death his wife took over his position. • 6. Jonathan Edwards Puritan Beliefs One can hear a sermon any day of the week, because there are many preachers out there in the world. Many sermons are retold Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments that tell how our ancestors lived, and teach us life applications of how to glorify God while we are living our lives. Some examples from the Bible are: David and Goliath and the lesson of courage, Deuteronomy 32:4 "... a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he" (KJV), and the Roman's Road of confession, acceptance of Christ, and salvation. For over a thousand years God's word has been preached by many faithful men who follow Him. However, there were some of those faithful men who used God's Word and their own improvisation to convict sinners and to put their trust in God. Those times resulted in an era called the Great Awakening of the 18th century and they also put an end to the segregation era of the 20th century. Two of the faithful men during those eras were Jonathan Edwards and Martin Luther King, Jr. . They both preached great sermons on confession and love. But they also had different points of view. When we read the two sermons our lives and actions may never be the same as they were before, because of feeling ashamed and convicted, then we begin to live our lives as Christians. Jonathan Edwards was a Puritan minister who sparked the era of the Great Awakening with his most famoussermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. The Great Awakening was an era in the 18th ... • 7. Anne Bradstreet's 'Upon The Burning Of Our House' William Bradford was one of the main reasons that the Puritan movement got rolling. He led puritans to the New World. When people wanted to give up he pushed them to keep moving. Bradford believed in something, stood for it, and did something about it. It was because of him that the Puritans could live and have freedom of beliefs. His writings were historical narratives. He talked about the lifestyle of Puritans. He wrote Of Plymouth Plantation, which was about the colony's first years in America. Bradford gives a telling account of how the Pilgrims were forced to flee to Holland in 1608, the immense suffering they underwent while there, their manner of living in that alien land, and their eventual determination to sail to the New World. Bradford... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was serious, plain, and to the point. They felt it needed to be practical. Religion played a huge role in the lives of Puritans. They ate, slept, and breathed this. Through each of the writings of William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards readers can see the essence ofPuritanism. The three principles of Puritans (God's grace, simplicity, and divine mission) can be mirrored through each author's works. My personal favorite author of the three is Anne Bradstreet. I am an emotional person and I admire that all of her writings are from the heart and completely relatable on every level. There is something about the way that she writes that makes you feel what she is feeling, because in some way in your own personal life there is a similar situation. In her poem "Upon the Burning of Our House" she talks about watching her house burn. Although I have not watched my house burn, I have seen things so dear to me get caught in flames so to speak. God has more than once tried to put things in perspective for me and remind me that this world is temporal and not eternal, that my focus should be on Him. I can relate with Bradstreet on the value of earthly and eternal treasures. Anne Bradstreet's poetry spoke more than just in the colonial times. • 8. Visible Signs of Puritan Decay Essay In times of Puritan society, the Ministers ruled with an iron fist as it portrays. No adultery, No drinking of vile drinks, and other stuff considered as a sin in the society has been outlawed. Stuff such as violations of the Sabbath and swearing and sleeping during sermons and also with businesses, abusing the lawyer system has been growing. Since the times of Puritan, society has been spiraling down hill fast in faith and morality. In the Puritan days, sleeping and swearing during sermons were considered disrespect to the Minister that was preaching. Of course it didn't help that the Minister preached about hell and brimstone and was monotone. Also the pews in the church were uncomfortable and the backs were high up. When the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And then it's sometimes the Ministers fault. We all know some have more experience and more ability to preach than others, but you can't help it when a Minister is giving his sermon and he is talking in monotone and the sermon itself is not really an attention grabber. Then there is thething about swearing. Back then people would get wiped if they swear. Even out of service. Today it's not accepted in the family but when in the public eye and especially with friends, all kinds of words come out. At least people have respect enough not to swear in the middle of service or in church for that matter. But the problem is when they get out of church, they start swearing like there is no tomorrow throughout the whole week till next service. So just maybe you can make a connection with the sleepers from service with the people that swear. They just might be the same people because that is how society has gone so far from Puritan/Godly life. Lots of people just go to church just to look good; and most of the time, those type are the head bobbers/sleepers because they are not interested in the service, just their reputation. Another sign of decay in their society that we can see today is people having lots of contention and the rise of lawsuits and lawyers. There always have been the issue of "money" in the society, but people did many strange and bad things to get it. As far as to murder some one or steal it. Some people ... • 9. The Theology Of The Holy Spirit And The Implications For... Spirit–Led Preaching is a niche book. It is rare to find a work that so concisely captures the theology of the Holy Spirit and the implications for expository preaching. Heisler answers the dilemma that today's typical evangelical "Spirit–shy Christians" face. Many contemporary preachers may fear being labeled "unbiblical" for considering the need to surrender to the control of the Spirit because of how the church has attributed crazy experiences to the ministry of the Spirit in preaching. Heisler values expository preaching as that which "holds the powerful combination of Word and Spirit together". While Heisler acknowledges the "subjective aspect" found in Spirit–led preaching, he affirms it is "governed by the grammatical–historical method". Heisler emphasizes this point throughout his work by marking the "benefits of the revealing ministry of the Holy Spirit" that come from preaching "within the bounds of the biblical text". Heisler's definition of illumination is the theological thread that ties together his emphasis of Word and Spirit in both preparation and delivery. He writes, "What is bright light in the study will be white hot in the sanctuary". For Heisler, this plays practically into what the preacher chooses to edit out or keep in his sermon notes, and how he animates his preaching points and biblical narratives . With this doctrine Heisler challenges preachers to practice the spiritual disciplines as part of their sermon preparation. Citing Paul's example, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Rhetorical Analysis Of Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God On July 8, 1741, in Enfield Connecticut, the speech Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, was delivered. The sermon was given by British Colonial Christian theologian Jonathan Edwards. His goal and purpose was to teach and warn people of the dangers of sins and the horrors of the afterlife. The speech was given at his own congregation in Northampton, Massachusetts to an unknown effect. Edwards had started The Great Awakening from his preaching. He was also a descendant of four generations of Puritan ministers and the most renowned and influential of Puritan Leaders. • 11. The Sermon On The Mount The sermon on the mount shows us Jesus 's ethical teachings on how a person should live his or life, the distinction from the law, and this has a reaction from the society. Jesus ' Sermon on the mount has had a huge impact on the Christian religion and somewhat shaped the religion in a sense. It has been a reference point for Christian ideals on the right way to live your life. It was a well constructed, alluring sermon that must have captivated the minds of the people. The sermon commences with the eight beatitudes, with prescribed blessings that follow them. These beatitudes advocates righteousness in our hearts, unlike the pretentious righteousness that the can be associated with the law. The qualities that the beatitudes tell you to embody, puts Christ followers at somewhat of a disadvantage because of the selfish, deceitful nature of humans. The blessing or reward that accompanies these beatitudes aren't for this world, and by this it introduces the notion of kingdom that is far greater than this world. This supports the concept of sacrificing and enduring persecution in this world, so you are rewarded in eternity. The sermon then strikes a metaphoric comparison with followers of Christ being the salt of the earth, and the light of the world. In Leviticus 2:13 it shows us how salt was categorized as being divine back then. This means that Christ followers are supposed to posses a sense of divinity, and shouldn't lose this quality by conforming to the things of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Greed And Religion In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales Greed and religion are two things you would not expect to intermingle, and yet Chaucer is able to develop a greedy religious character known as the Pardoner. There are many religious characters in The Canterbury Tales besides the Pardoner including the Prioress, the Monk, the Friar, and the Parson. Each character carries their own good and bad characteristics, but the Pardoner is obviously greedy. This character brings into question the greediness of the Church and Chaucer's views. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer explores the theme of greed in relation to religion through The Pardoner's Prologue and Tale. Despite his religious position, the Pardoner will demonstrate his greed by outlining the tricks he often plays on his listeners through his prologue and tale. In the beginning of the fourteenth century, the Church developed a position for selling "heavenly treasury" to those who "repented and confessed" (Bowden 277). This position, known as a pardoner, made it easy to be exempt from sin with an exchange of money. The profit from selling these indulgences and relics was to be used to help with maintenance of the Church, but along with easy forgiveness came easy dishonesty. The relics and indulgences could be sold by anyone that decided to call themselves a pardoner. In addition, a legitimate pardoner could sell relics and/or indulgences while keeping the money for himself or without pardoning people in the proper way (Bowden 277). • 14. The Sermon On The Mount Some of them wondering what power does Jesus possess? Who has to authorize him to heal the sick? And others wondered maybe he was the great prophet that was foretold in the book of Isaiah. So through that, a crowd followed him to the mountain. According to Mathew chapter 5–7, Jesus only preached about the kingdom of God. So that people were able to know what they had to do so as to enter the kingdom of God. For example, they shouldn 't perform adultery, shouldn 't murder, shouldn 't divorce and the greatest of all the lesson is "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." The "sermon on the mount" began with Jesus teaching Beatitudes, where he described the kingdom of God. He taught that those entitled to the kingdom of God are the mourners, poor in spirit and others. He also explained the benefits to be received, for example, "those who are meek will inherit the kingdom of God." Most people think that beatitudes are commands, but beatitudes are the just statement which portrays what God wants from us so as to enter his kingdom. According to Quarles (2011), some of the wording in the beatitudes are symbolic inChristianity and meant to make our spiritual growth stronger. For example, one is not supposed to be poor in spirit so that he may inherit the earth. After the Beatitudes, Jesus preached about salt and light where he symbolizes salt as the wealth of the world which can be lost at any time, and it can never be regained. Arthurs Book Analysis by CH (CPT) Stephanie Handy The book that I read was entitled "Preaching with Variety" by Jeffrey D. Arthurs. It is a great resource and provided a wealth of information on various preaching styles and form. "The book describes the rhetorical dynamics of biblical genres and suggest how preachers can reproduce some of those dynamics in their sermon" (pg. 15). The content of the book consisted of illustrations, a forward, introduction, epilogue, notes, and a bibliography section. The author discussed various was to use the psalm, parable, proverb, epistle, narrative, and apocalyptic literature in preaching. Four of the topics discussed in the book focused on communication, the psalm, narrative, and parable. In chapter one, Arthurs pointed that God is the "great communicator" who communicated with variety. Variety is found throughout the word of God. Because God is a great communicator who used variety, preachers should preach with variety. Jesus used all kinds of form style, and genres of preaching. He knew how to get people attention. Preaching with variety helps the text to come alive. "Jesus used anecdotes, stories, paradoxes, contradictions, humor, irony, questions, and answers" (pg. 21), so we can too. Not only did Jesus used parables, objects, monologue and dialogue, but he used parables and symbols. For Arthurs, "God is an artist and a persuader who expresses himself with skills ... • 16. Rhetorical Analysis Of Henry Mitchell's Celebration And... Henry Mitchell does a great job of focusing on a few main arguments in Celebration and Experience in Preaching. These arguments center around the experience of the Word and the vehicles of experience. Mitchell starts the book by stating that he believes that salvation and spiritual growth come through a spiritual encounter with the Word and that preaching at its best is used by the Holy Spirit makes this experiential encounter possible. Mitchell contends that this experience is not a coming to faith moment. But, rather the experiential experience is one that helps to "describe, interpret, and help communicate" the faith experience. An experiential encounter with Word happens when three major elements are present. The first major element that needs to be present for an experiential encounter with Word is a Biblical text that encourages trust in and obedience to Word, along with a behavioral purpose calling for real–life application. The second major element needed is a basic understanding of hearing and other senses and how they relate to belief in Word. The hearing experience must consist of vivid details and images, some sense of familiarity, and homiletic moves in consciousness. Mitchell believes that details allow for a greater sense of meaning for believers, familiar associations call to mind similar experiences that bridge the gap between then and now, and the homiletical moves break down abstract concepts bringing them to life for the hearer. The third major element ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. The Causes Of Ethnic Cleansing In Burma Burma I argue that Wirathu of Burma's preaching of hate–filled sermons should not be tolerated. While it is not the cause of the ethnic cleansing in Burma, his sermons can instigate violence between the Muslims and Buddhists in the country. This ignites more rationalization of the ethnic cleansing.Burma is no stranger to war or outside influence from other countries in the west, and after the Buddhists of the county fought against military rule in 2007, they won the international administration (Wade 6). Since the change in administration the Buddhist have been the most vocal about the external threat the Islamic faith causes for the country (Wade 6). Most of the violence is directed toward the Rohingya Muslims that were banned from Bangladesh because of violent campaigns (Wade 7). With the Buddhist being the majority, it is easy for them to push out the Rohingya with the ethnic cleansing, and some argue that Wirathu is at the head of the violence. Wirathu's sermons include ideas like "In every town there is a savage Muslim majority" (Hodal 4). Or "we are being sexually harassed, ganged up on, and raped in in every town" (Hodal). Using this kind of language is bound to make his followers and others believe that these acquisitions are true of the Rohingya. New ideas and concepts facilitate sermon design and construction; while at the same time a fresh perspective was given to old ideas and concepts. Eswine's work added to the discussion of expository Christ–centered preaching as well. In regard to sermon design, Eswine offered several new ideas and concepts. First, he suggested that preachers ask, "Could I now reach who I once was?". Normally preachers observer their listeners; however, this question causes preachers to exegete themselves, motivating them to recall their journey along the path of sanctification. "Remembering where we'd be without God and then ministering to others out of that knowledge" promotes empathy with listeners (11). As a result, preachers are able to construct sermons tailored to meet the needs of their listeners since they can relate to their struggles and situations as well as their questions and concerns. Under this understanding of the gospel, the promises of Christianity and capitalism are the same: hard work, whether financially or spiritually, will lead to material wealth and success. In fact, a major critique of prosperity gospel is that it takes advantage people at or below the poverty line by teaching them that prayer is the true answer to their economic woes, capitalizing on their desire for financial and spiritual help by pushing religious materials like Osteen's books, and the donation plate toward those who are in real financial need, in order to accumulate wealth for the multibillion dollar institution. Conversely, prosperity gospel also suggests that those who are physically and financially well–off are inherently godly, according to their belief that physical and financial blessings are always a gift from God. This essentially reinforces the capitalist notion of the superiority of the upper classes, who, as a result, are not only seen as superior due to monetary wealth, but are also assumed to be morally and spiritually greater. In short, material success that Osteen promises in his prosperity gospel preaching parallels the promise of the potential for success and social mobility fostered by capitalism. Again, American values, in this case capitalism, are foundational to televangelism and embodied by Osteen through his sermons and religiously intonated self–help books. Not only that, but the material promises of prosperity gospel are also this likely to foster evangelical support of the capitalist system, an idea which is gaining traction with American religious historians19 some even attribute Trump's success in the 2016 election to evangelical support as ... Studies from "Puritanism/Religion" show that what set Puritanism apart from the rest was the way it was preached and the intense experience it gave many. The style and teaching of the Bible have evolved over time. According to the "Journal of Church and State," the Puritans connected a covenant relationship with unifying themselves (2014). McMahon (n.d.) stated they wanted a pure church with the Word of God. Preachers In Salem The path to becoming a preacher started very early on in their lives. Stated in McMahon's (n.d.) writing, preachers were raised by godly parents who educated them with the basic standards of that time. They were then sent to achieve their ministerial training, that could either take place at Oxford or Cambridge University. The process still wasn't finished, they needed to shadow a godly minister. The final step was actually preaching to the congregation under the watch of the godly minister. These preachers were there to honor Christ and make him happy, they didn't care if they got paid or not. There were hours of studying and preparation for each sermon preached (McMahon, n.d.). • 24. My View Of The Wilderness The biggest challenge for this sermon in class was combining Andrew's sermon with my own. After I told him my wilderness plan we decided we would both focus on the wilderness. He would cover the literal wilderness that included nature and I would cover the meaning of the wilderness as it was used in the Bible. In general, my view of the wilderness was as a negative thing while his view of the wilderness has more possibility to be a positive thing. With this being a good format to craft our own sermons from, weaving them together was the hard part. We wanted it to be a true dialogue and not just split Tom Long's methodology into parts. We each desired to discuss the text and the real world as we spoke instead of assigning the biblical work to one person and the real work examples to the other. This created more work on our own parts but I would say that it was worth the effort. We found natural places where Andrew's points and my own could be intersected to balance each other out. Quite often we were able to enlighten the other's point of view and provide a way for our audience to fully hear the good and the bad about the wilderness. We also noticed that we preach with different tones and wondered how that would work with our audience. A Summary Of The First Great Awakening Described as theologically significant, The First Great Awakening (c. 1735–1743) was the beginning of a revitalization that hit the American colonies by storm. It began to form once religion had eased down and preachers began to take an emotional foot in religion and increasing liberalism – Armenia (free will) ideals began to form. George Whitefield, a circuit rider who preached spiritual awakening, and Jonathan Edwards, imposed fear in people by claiming God had already chosen who get his salvation, were the main contributors to the First Great Awakening. The Second Great Awakening (c.1795–1830) was experienced across the country due to the advancement in the nation's economic growth. Preachers often spoke emotionally about their message to increase the reaction in people. Preaches proclaimed that the power of eternal salvation is in the hands of the person to decided to be saved and avoid eternal damnation. This ideals were closest related/influenced by Arminianism which sinfulness is a choice rather than a destiny in which it appealed to more people because of its optimistic outlook. • 28. The First Great Awakening And Jonathan Edwards And George... In the early 18th century, there was an increased movement away from the church due to the encouragement to value logic and reason over faith in the church. This caused the faith in the church to become incredibly low. Going to church started to be a chore, and individuals would only go to receive the sermon, if at all. Upon seeing the overall state of religious faith, preachers began taking their sermons to the people by preaching in central areas and going from church to church throughout the colonies. This became known as the first Great Awakening. At the forefront of the Great Awakening were preachers that came from England who would use evangelism to bring their word to the religiously complacent population of the colonies. This sermon teaches us how we should love the people who hate us, and not hate them back. Kings' purpose for preaching this sermon was because he wanted to provide answers. The segregation era of the 1900's was a time when the white people were very racist to the black people and they separated areas of where the black people had to go. One example would be when the black people had to use the restroom and they could not use the white people's restroom, they would have to like walk a mile to their restroom, labeled "Colored Only", and they would be in dirty places, and that pitted the blacks against the whites. However, the purpose of preaching his sermon was because he wanted to show how Jesus' teachings teach us not to hate our enemies, because in the sermon, "... this the very center of Jesus' thinking, this is: that hate only intensifies the existence of hate and evil in the universe" (King 6). King wanted the people to think like how Jesus has thought when our hate is stirring up evil into the universe. They even ridiculed him about his faith saying that God can't help him, but because of all this he was even more on fire for the lord and trusted that he had a plan for him being there. Eric Liddell was not as badly beaten, although at times he was ridiculed for being a Christian and ended up going to prison. At one point in time Eric Liddell got the opportunity to leave prison but gave it up so that they would release a woman that was pregnant, he sacrificed his freedom for hers. Later on Eric ended up getting sick and dying in prison. Even though both Yun and Eric faced many trials in their lives, they did it for the Lord to bring people to know him so they do not die lost. Through all their ministry and hardships they never gave up on God and he certainly never gave up on him. As Yun told some of the prisoners after he baptized them in the bathroom of the jail "Some men live free in this life, only to face an eternal prison in hell. You're in prison in this life, but from today your names have been written in heaven and you are free!" Even though they are prisoners in this life they will live freely with Christ in ... • 31. The Eight Beatitudes In The Sermon On The Mount In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduced the eight beatitudes to teach his followers how to live an ideal Christian life. He taught those who listened about the 8 important blessings to guide us to soon be living an everlasting life with God in His kingdom above. Some of the Beatitudes influence us to feel compassion towards those who have wronged us, to be able to act out of the goodness of our hearts, and to bring peace and harmony to friends and enemies in times of disagreement. These Beatitudes are significant to us as Christians, for they shall enlighten us with Jesus' teachings for a virtuous and moral life here on earth and above. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" is the fifth beatitude that Jesus had said on the Mount. This Beatitude means to show forgiveness to those who have wronged you and to always be compassionate and sympathetic towards them. The idea of being merciful means to give up seeking revenge to those who have hurt them and follow Jesus' ways of turning the other cheek. This Beatitude can be applied to my own life in many situations, situations in which I have been able to love someone unconditionally despite the fact that they've betrayed me. A situation I've experienced betrayal was when my friend had gone behind my back spreading personal things that I had confided in her to keep private, but instead she had spread it like wild fire. As a result, I did not think of revenge as a "Plan A," I didn't want anger to rule my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jonathan Edwards: Early Colonial Theologist and Religious Revivalist Jonathan Edwards (1703–1759) played a historic part in American Christianity as we know it today. He was a notorious religious figure during a time when Congregationalists were determined to adhere to the religious styles of old. His intellectual and theological reason, along with his fervent zeal fueled by the Holy Spirit, makes him one of the greatest evangelistic preachers and apologists of all time. His life, works, and sermons inspired other leaders to spread the gospel message and brought about life–altering revivals and conversions in those he reached. After his first graduation, Edwards went on to continue his studies in theology and prepare for a life in ministry. Equally as successful with Edwards's educational climb was his anointment in his pastoral call. Though he often questioned the sovereignty doctrine of God from an early age, his search for meaning and truth came about during his personal testimony of conversion when, at the age of seventeen he read 1 Timothy 1:17. It was then when he finally connected with the one and only true God that his life changed for the duration. It was this pivotal moment that marked his conversion and led to what would become the fervent, heart–felt preaching style that characterized his sermons and brought conviction to the hearts of the parishioners who heard him. Proceeding graduate school, he served as his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard's, assistant at the Congregational Church in Northampton, Massachusetts for two years and later succeeded him as ordained minister following Stoddard's death in 1726 (Reid, Pg. 380). It was during this pastoral that Edward's evangelistic and apologetic reputation was at its peak. In 1741, William Cooper recommended his apologia to be used during the revivals that were sweeping through the colonies (Lesser, Pg. 34). This set the stage for Edwards ... • 33. Essay The Sermon on the Mountain The word of Jesus found in Luke 6:20–26 are the opening statements of His Sermon on the Plain. As with any other passage there are translation differences, literary, historical, linguistic, economic and sociological backgrounds for this passage. It is sometimes difficult to discern the original, or real, meaning of biblical passages and Luke 6:20–26, and beatitudes in general, are no different. The Sermon on the Mount, found in Mark 5–7, is generally referred to as the greatest sermon ever preached. Jesus begins His sermon by stating the eight beatitudes, and the passage in Luke 6:20–26 contains a subset of these beatitudes combined with a corresponding set of woes. There are two genres used in this passage. Each of the first four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first three beatitudes (blessings for the poor, hungry, and weeping; verses 20–21) has same wording in the NIV and the NASB and the only textual difference in the NLT is the beginning of "God blesses." Verse 22 (blessings for the persecuted) expresses blessing for the hated, excluded, insulted, and rejected in the NIV; the hated, excluded mocked, and cursed in the NLT; and the hated, ostracized, insulted and scorned in the NASB. A common attributed of the persecuted among the NIV, the NLT, and the NASB is hated, and the remaining three vary. Verse 23 contains no significant textual differences among the NIV, the NLT, and the NASB. Like the first three beatitudes, the first three woes (woe to the rich, well fed, and laughing; verses 24–25) are the same in the NIV and the NASB, but the NLT uses, "what sorrows await you are" to describe the woes. In verse 26, woe is expressed for those who "everyone speaks well of" in the NIV, for those "who are praised by the crowds" in the NLT, and those who "all men speak well of" in the NASB. (Note that any biblical quotation from this point forward, unless otherwise indicated, is quoted from the New International Version published in 2011.) The tense of the beatitudes and their corresponding woes can also be explored. The first and fourth of the beatitudes and their woes describe a blessing or woe that is placed in the ... • 34. Hypocritical Of Honesty In The Pardoner's Tale While some may view the pardoner in The Pardoner's Tale as hypocritical, he is actually very honest. The Pardoner does not sugar coat anything; he always tells it how it is. He tells everyone from the start that he gets his wealth from greed. If the Pardoner was hypocritical he would have never told the travelers that he is greedy. He would have tried to make it seem as though he were righteous and has never fallen into avarice. The Pardoner always tells the travelers what he is thinking. He told them that he wanted to sell them pardons so that he can get money. He never lies to the travelers about his intentions. • 35. Personal Theology Of Preaching And Ministry Essay Personal Theology Of Preaching And Ministry Nicole Vogel 12/6/2016 SEPL610 Practice of Preaching Professor Suzanne Duchesne As a future minister, I recognize the importance in understanding my theological perspective which has an effect on my understanding of the role as a minster and particularly the role of preaching. One's personal theology affects the neurological wiring in one's brain which unconsciously influences decisions and actions. There are specific theological views that I believe shape my understanding of a minister's role as well as preaching. One particular theological view that shapes how I understand the role of a minister and shapes my homiletic process is also a doctrinal belief of my denomination that I wholly subscribe to. This tenant is referred to in the reformed tradition as "priesthood of all believers." What that means is that I believe Jesus is a gift from God and it is the responsibility of all those who claim to be Christians to minster to others. This effects my preaching as I am consciously aware of my sermon's ability to help others view me as someone who is on this journey with them, who happens to have more expertise in biblical studies guiding them, but who is not belittling them. Lucy Atkins Rose suggests keeping a sermon conversational, and this is a way in which I find myself striving towards in my homiletical approach. I believe this method offers a more relational experience and, as she also suggests, would inspire growth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. John Edward's Sermon, Damned If You Do, Damned If You... In the eyes of God, we are all sinners. July 8, 1741, John Edwards preached to his congregation that no matter what we do, God would send us to hell unless we spill our blood on the cross. Edwards's sermon was one of the most pivotal, volatile, and stirring sermons that set the standard for hellfire and brimstone sermons. Edwards's describes all of us as sinners and how our lives lay perilously in god's angry hands. To this day, we still have pastors preaching hellfire and brimstone sermons. While 272 years separate John Edwards from modern day pastors, we can still see the ever–lasting correlation that is derived from John Edwards in modern day pastors. Edwards describes hell as being the most horrific place and how no one is immune from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That question weighs on everyone's mind. What do I do: stop drinking, stop having martial affairs, stop sitting at home watching the pregame football shows and go to church. From John Edwards's time to now, we all have different views on heaven, on hell, and sinning. But John Hagee says, "We must spill our blood on thy cross to be saved by Jesus Christ and almighty God (Hagee)." What the hell does that mean John Hagee? No matter what I do, no matter what I say. I'm still bound to the fiery wells of hell. I mine as well live my life to the fullest, drink and hang out with Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker, and Jose Cuervo, enjoy my time with my wife and kids, and watch football on Sundays. Why should I let fear have a hold on me? In the end, we all end up in some place weather its heaven or hell. Today's pastors have the same format and the same connection that John Edwards's had 272 years ago. Prime example is Pastor Charles Lawson preaching. Charles Lawson preaches with immense intensity to capture your soul. He yells at the top of his lungs, and raises his hand and tells his congregation, "You must embrace God or you will go to hell (Lawson)." Lawson brings up recent events such as deaths in the community. Just like Edwards brought up about your kin dying unexpectedly, Lawson brings up how any day could be your day of judgment. Bringing up recent events and unexpected death gives you since of connection with yourself and death. Do you want God to judge ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Pardoner of The Canterbury Tales Essay The Pardoner of The Canterbury Tales How can a man exact vengeance on God if there is nothing a mortal can do to hurt Him? The Pardoner was born sterile, which resulted in abnormal physical development. The Pardoner, an immoral man, tells a moral story because he believes that doing this will further his ultimate objective – revenge upon God for his anomalous physical attributes. "He had the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Pardoner's tale has an important theme, "Radix malorum est cupiditas," which translates to "Greed is the root of all evil." However, the Pardoner does not practice what he preaches. His vocation, which involves selling false pardons and relics for a profit, is a contradiction to his theme. "And thus I preach against the very vice/ I make my living out of – avarice" (243). The Pardoner continues with his tale and condemns gluttony, drinking, gambling, and swearing, but then declares that he is guilty of each one. It is evident that the Pardoner is a hypocrite and that he has no intention of changing. In the tale, three young rioters discover that a good friend has died and they mistakenly believe he was killed by a man named Death. They pledge that they will find Death and avenge their friend. As they embark on their quest, they pass by an old man and criticize his age. They inquire about Death, and the old man mentions that he left Death by a tree. The rioters proceed to the tree, but find a pile of gold florins rather than Death. Ultimately, the three young men kill each other in a vain attempt to increase their personal share of the gold. Thus, the young men set out to find Death and they succeeded in their search. Their greed was the cause of their demise. The Pardoner is analogous to the rioters because ... • 39. Leonora Tubbs Tisdale: Personal Theology Of Preaching Personal Theology of Preaching Paper When it comes to preaching, there are a variety of styles, techniques and methodologies to consider. From my own experience, I have found that however a person chooses to preach, there is no one size fits all approach; meaning that each preacher needs to find their own personal style. I think of a sermon like a softened ball of clay; each preacher has their own unique mold that will create a particular impression into one side of the clay when they preach a sermon. The congregation receiving the sermon then also has a mold that will leave an impression on the other side of the clay. Both molds shape the clay, or in other words, both the preacher and the congregation play a role in how the sermon is given ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His technique provides structure and an easy to follow outline that allows preachers to keep their sermons focused and clear, while allowing congregation members to have a format that is easy to follow and understand. However, one aspect that I would argue Wilson is missing, is an aspect of testimony throughout a sermon. To me, Anna Carter Florence's technique of testimony leads me to the image of a preacher bringing their own personal passion and experience into a sermon, and I think this is very important for preachers to do. If a preacher is able to illustrate, identify or show a congregation how Scripture and God is at work in his/her personal life, it will help a congregation to search for how Scripture and God is at work in their own ...
