4. Model predictive control
MPC is a general term for computer control algorithms [10] that uses an outright process model to
predict future response of the plant.
An optimized input is determined by solving an open–loop optimal control problem over a finite
time horizon. The number of samples one looks forward is called the prediction horizon Np. While,
number of samples that the optimal input is computed for is called the control horizon Nu. The
complexity of the problem can be decreased by selecting a shorter control horizon than prediction
horizon. From the calculated input signal only the first element is applied to the system.
This can allows solving online the optimized control problem, where prediction error action and
control input are minimized through a future horizon, possibility of subject to constraints on the
manipulated inputs, outputs and states. Then, the optimization returns an optimal control sequence
as input and the first input only from the sequence is used as input to the system. By the next sample

The effects of optimal arousal and performance has been studied extensively in psychology.
Throughout sports psychology it is known that there is an optimal arousal level at which athletes
perform their best. In previous studies surrounding the relationship between emotional states and
performance, have been examined using the individual zone of optimal functioning (IZOF). IZOF is
a sport–specific framework that describes the relationship between emotional experiences and
success on the basis of individual patterns (Ruiz, Raglin, & Hanin, 2015). In a review done by Ruiz
et al. (2015), it was found over 183 IZOF based studies making it one of the most popular models
for an analyzing subjective experience and athletic performance. From past research the IZOF
model has found that anxiety heavily influences performance of athletes and each athlete has an
individually optimal level of anxiety, which with probability will lead to a successful performance
(Hanin. 1978, 1986, 1989).
Even though IZOF is one of most widely used models when examining arousal and performance,
research using the model has its limitations. As a model, it focuses on individual patterns, therefore

Robust parameter design (RPD), an effective quality improvement tool, minimizes the performance
variability and bias of a product or a process in which the experimental design space is subject to
physical restrictions and constraints. For a number of practical situations, optimal design criteria
may allow best experimental design schemes to be generated based on the decision maker's choices
and the use of optimal design criteria to RPD problems may overcome the limitations of standard
experimental designs in finding optimal operating conditions for both quantitative and qualitative

Abstract
The purpose of this experiment was to come up with the optimal temperature of the Fungal
Amylase, Aspergillus oryzae, and the Bacterial Amylase, Bacillus liceniformis, as well as to identify
if different temperatures would indeed affect the enzyme amylase by either slowing down the
process or denaturing the enzyme. Enzymes are complex proteins, they can be thought of as a
substance fabricated by a living organism that behaves as a stimulus, otherwise known as a catalyst,
to cause a specific biochemical reaction. This experiment was performed by keeping the amylase
mixed with starch at different temperatures, either in the heated water or in the ice bath. The
temperatures varied at either 0, 25, 55, or 85 degrees Celsius. After a certain amount of time we
would then move the test tubes containing the amylases and position them on a plate where iodine
was then added to the starch amylase solution. We would do the same thing at different time
intervals to see exactly how the enzyme catalyzed the starch. The hypothesis of this experiment was
thought to be that the higher the temperature the slower the enzyme would then hydrolyze the

Growth rates in response to pH levels were researched using Salvinia minima plants. A total of
twenty–seven plants were selected and isolated from the pond inside the Stony Brook Unversity
greenhouse. Upon isolation, they were placed into three groups: the control, the acid, and the base.
The plants were carefully observed and were visited every two days to note the changes.
Measurements of the surface area and the weight demonstrated that there was more progress seen in
the plants that were in acidic water than those in normal pond water and basic conditions. Our
results supported our hypothesis that S. minima plants exhibit a higher growth rate when placed in
water with acidic pH levels. Therefore, this study constitutes an essential contribution to
understanding the invasiveness of this species and how pH levels can affect the development of S.
minima plants and by offering alternatives to controlling the invasiveness of this species.
