A word autonomous is derived from a Greek word.
Autonomous = Autos + Nomos
 It is vehicle that can drive itself from one place to
another without any assistance from driver
 In other words it is operated by an autopilot system
(SELF) (GOVERN)
 This project invented by Google engineer Sebastian
Thrun, director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View.
 Nevada Dept. of Motor vehicles issued the first license for an
autonomous car in 2012.
 The license was issued to a toyota motors with Google’s
experimental driverless technology.

 LIDAR is mounted on the roof of
the vehicle which are rotated.
 LASER beam move around the
car
 The LIDAR (Light detection and
Ranging) sensor is a scanner.
 Radar is an objective detection system
that uses radio waves to determine the
range speed of objective.
 measures the distance to various objects
and allow the system to reduce the speed
of the car
 Three RADAR sensors are fixed in front
of the bumper and one in the rear
bumper.
 Camera are installed at the top of the
front glass of car.
 detects traffic lights and any moving
objects in front of the car.
 It is also used to identify road
markings and traffic signal.
 done by the artificial intelligence
software.
These sensors are mounted on the
wheel of a vehicle.
Ultrasonic sensors may be used to
measure the position of object very
close to the vehicle, such as curbs .
These are used for to detect nearby
objects or measure the position of
other vehicles during parking.
 The GPS sensor Provide the car
with Real time information about
the Surrounding .
 The Source and destination is
marked on the Map and the Car
uses GPS to navigate itself without
human interruption.
 It is a brain of the car.
 All the data obtained from each and
every sensor systems is fed to the
central computer.
 The central computer is a very
powerful processing unit mounted
on the inside of the vehicle
