1. The Mighty Redcar
The episode of the mighty Redcar that I had watched was focused around
shops closing and in a town that used to be a big spot for people there wasn't
any opportunity for people in the video because of a failed job opportunity
or not getting the required grade, never the less as much as it tried to paint
things in a positive light it fell short on the people it was selling. I will
explain, as there was a teenager in the episode with a criminal record that
was trying to get a job they painted it as the system being difficult and
against him but it fails to mention the fact that he is responsible for the
positions he's in. The episode also followed a girl trying to get her grades so
she could go to a college she wanted to get into this was the most normal
part of the episode, another focus was her mother who was apparently
working 5 jobs and over 40 hours a week and she could apparently barley
afford anything for her daughter, my issue with this is that minimum wage is
£7.20 an hour so in a week she earns £288 and in a year £14,976 so if that's
what she is getting at minimum she should be doing fine but what do we
know.
Can a documentary be objective? Yes I think that a documentary can be
objective it simply depends on the person making it and if they choose to
report facts and honest truth or manipulate how it sounds, even so people
can interpret information differently and this can be an issue. I believe that
its important to think there can be an objective documentary because if there
can’t even be a documentary that honest what hope is there for news.
How far should we accept what we watch/read? I think its important to take
things with a grain of salt, as this documentary on Redcar shows they can
take information and put a spin on it by changing the context, this can be
applied to everything and so I think what we read and what we watch will
always come from people that interpret information in different ways which
is why I think its important for us to find the source material and make up
our own minds.
How can we make sure what a documentary presents as fact, is true? I think
that the best way is to find someone that we know is reliable for factual
information and use this to follow there documentary's of course this can
apply to different creators for different subjects, I would recommend
looking at the source material yourself finding someone that matched what
it actually was and then following there work, I think to be sure on
2. everything you will always have to research yourself just to make sure the
documentary is right.
