Legal highs are substances used like illegal drugs such as cocaine or cannabis, but not
coveredby current misuse of drugs laws. This means they are legal to possess or to use.
Are youaware of legal highs?
Emily:No I am not aware.
Shauna: Not until recently.
Sarah: Yes I am.
Do youthink they are safe just because they are legal?
Emily:Not necessarily no.
Shauna: No I would ever use legal highs.
Sarah: No because Iknow people who have used them and they are very dangerous
compared to illegal drugs such as cannabis.
Although these drugs are marketed as legal substances, this doesn’t mean that they are
safe or approved forpeople to use
Are youfamiliar witha popular one called nitrous oxide also knownas hippy crackor
balloons?
Emily:I have heard of it but I am not that familiar with it with its effects.
Shauna: Heard about it on the news, a lot of celebrities are using it.
Sarah: A lot of people I know use it.
Nitrous oxide is a gas with several legitimate uses, but when inhaled it can make people
feel euphoric and relaxed. This happy feeling has led to it being nicknamed ‘laughing
gas’. Some people also experience hallucinations.
Did you know there is a risk of death as a lack of oxygen can occur when using nitrous
oxide?
Emily:I did not know it was that severe.
Shauna: No I did not know.
Sarah: No.
Nitrous Oxide was responsible for 17 deaths between 2006 and 2012.It has been
estimated that 500,000 young people frequently take the gas, according to the Global
Drugs Survey,it is the 14th most used drug globally.
Have you ever used this certain type of legal high? If so, why?
Emily:I have not.
Shauna: Never
Sarah: Yeah, because other people were doing it.
Will you use legal highs such a nitrous oxide now that you know the dangers?

Shauna: No, I never plan too.
Sarah: Not to sure, probably not.
